IPad photos disorganised after 'rebuilding' library

Our photos in the library used to be organised nicely by date then we received some photos of our family in an email and tried to save them but it didn't save them but started ' rebuilding' the library and now they are all disorganised. The photo on the preview thumbnail image does not match any of photos in the event or album and all the events are now called 101IMPRT 102IMPRT etc. Instead of dates taken Can you help?

What purpose do thumbs serve anyway? Why don't I need them?
Iphoto 5 works like this:
When you import a photo it imports the original and
then creates a low quality Thumbnail image into
folders called "thumbs". The thumbnail is not your
photo just a reference that you see when you view
your iphoto library. In addition if you ever modify
(red eye for example) a photo than iphoto creates a
modified copy of the original...
So you may be asking what does this mean to me
Here is what I
you said you had a back up copy so do this.
- Delete all you iphoto libraries up until this point
then make another copy of you backup.
- DO a search on one of the backup libraries for all
folders called "thumbs" and put them in the trash
- open iphoto and create a new iphoto library.
- import images from the iphoto library folder that
you trashed the "thumbs" from
Note: You will still import what appears to be
duplicates but in actuallity it will be the original
image and then any modified version of any images
that you modified. But at least you wont have those
pesky Thumbnails

  • Photo disappear after rebuilding library

    Hi all,
It's very sad thing to happen on x'mas.. hope i can get some help here.
I don't know what cause the problem... so i'd better describe everything i've done.
My friend sent me some photos in his iphone to my email.
I then saved all those photos on my iphone.
I've checked them on camera roll after downloading..and it still works.
then i load the app "Polarize", and try to load the photos from camera roll.
Then it said there's no photos..
so then i went back to photo... it then started to "updating library" / rebuilding library...
then i waited... after rebuild...several hundreds of photos are gone...
I tried to restart...and they are still gone...
Since my laptop has taken to maintenance, it hasn't been backed up for a while now...
    Please kindly suggest any solution...

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a  backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • Pictures won't download after rebuilding library

After rebuilding my iPhoto library, I am unable to complete download operations. When I connect my camera to download, I get all the familiar windows up to the start of the download. It then indicates that it is downloading, but never goes beyond saying 35 photos remaining (I happened to have 35 shots in the camera to download). When I cancelled the downlaod and tried to quit iPhoto, a message said downloading was in progress. I had to force quit. The same thing happens if I attempt to import a photo by dragging it from the desktop. I use iPhoto 5.0.4 on an iBook G4 with OS 10.3.9. The library is kept on an external drive.

It sounds like the iPhoto Library Manager is intended to deal with picture file issues for existing photos.
    You think?
    How about
this process creates an entirely new library
    So
Would rebuilding the library have anything to do with my ability to import new photos?
If, as I suspect, the problem is a damaged database file, yes. But I could be wrong. The good news is the process is
non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
So it's a "nothing to lose but a little time" situation.

    TD

  • Camera and Photo apps say 'Rebuilding Library'

I've read a couple posts, and wondering if anyone has found a solution yet? When I click on my Camera icon it starts to 'Rebuild Library' then goes back to the home screen. Same thing happens when I hit the Photos icon. I can not use the camera or see any photos I have saved on the iPhone. Extremely frustrating.
I saw a post that mentions using a third party program to retrieve the pictures but says you'll lose the videos. I don't want to lose anything (...although I fear I already have). And I'm not sure if that program addresses the loss of the camera application.
When I try to view the iPhone photo files through iPhoto it says there are no files there. Hmm. Very worrisome.
Does anyone have the solution? Bueller? Bueller?

I did hard reset and used the cord that came with the camera when trying to upload. I don't think it's an uploading problem. I think it's an issue with the new operating system.
    Anyone?

  • Photo stream after iPhoto Library Move

OK, so I have moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive (had to clear up space on my MBP).
I now want to open iPhoto & generate a new library. My intention is to use this going forwards. I will not be regularly attaching the hard drive with the old Library, this will effectively just be archived & used as necessary
My question relates to photo stream. I start iPhoto & set up my new Library, I then choose to turn on photo stream. I am warned that turning on photo stream for this library will turn it off for my old library.
I just need to make sure I don't lose anything on this process. In other words, by turning off photos tram in the old library, I am assuming that it freezes things 'as was'.
If by turning off photo stream to the new library I am going to lose stuff, I would like to now beforehand,
    Can anyone advise?

Only one iPhoto Library or Aperture library can use photo stream at at a time. If you enable Photo Stream for a new library, all automatic imports will go to this new library, and you can only share photos from this new library. But no photos will be deleted from the old library. The transit should be seamless,

  • Photos blurry after rebuilding photo library

OK, so I followed the directions and completed the rebuilding of my iPhoto library. However, now in the edit window the photos look out of focus (they weren't before!) and when I tried making a book the message I got was that the photos are of "low quality." What do I do now????

  • Iphoto quits unexpectedly on upload even AFTER rebuilding library

My iphoto 08 is quitting unexpectedly after uploading photos from two different cameras. This happened a few times last month and after the third time iphoto would not open at all and said that my library was damaged/inaccessible. I followed the directions on this forum and rebuilt the library using iphoto manager. That seemed to do the trick but after the second photo import, iphoto started quitting unexpectedly again. I'm worried that there is still a problem unsolved by the rebuilding.
I have also repaired disk permissions. I have 40GB available space on my hard drive.
Is there a problem with my iphoto? Should I import photos another way and then drag the photos into iphoto instead?
PS I have Mac OSX but not sure where to look to identify the exact version. We do all the automatic updates.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you tried deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Restore previous app/music after rebuilding library

I recently chaged drive location to all my music (23000+ mp3) on my pc: ie: from D:\music to E:\music
To avoid adding again all the music from scratches to iTunes I decided to just rebuild the library after mass-modifying the paths in the xml file (if you don't know what I'm talking about check this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11566523?messageID=11566523#11566523). Of course I had previously made a backup of all the library files (iTunes Library.itl iTunes Music Library.xml iTunes Library Extras.itdb-mj0B573865 iTunes Library Extras.itdb iTunes Library Genius.itdb sentinel)
The trick worked well: all my music was back with references pointing to the new location.
The problems arised when I plugged in my iPhone 4 (osx 5.0.1)... basically 2 problems:
    1) The app tab inside itunes doesn't show the apps I had, even if all the apps are in C:\Users\****\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications.
Not a big deal as itunes ask me if I want to move my purchased apps from iPhone to the PC... so it is possible to solve this problem but it's not the best solution as it takes a lot of times to copy the apps back and it does create duplicates (ie after starting moving some apps I have Adobe Reader 10.1.0.ipa and Adobe Reader 10.1.0.1.ipa and of course the one linked in the apps tab is the latter.. ). Nothing big, but I wish my iTunes could just see the apps since they still are in their place.
    2) Similar but worse problem with music: iTunes has just forgot which music I had synced with my iPhone.
Of course the music is still on my HD (in a new location, but this location is "known" by the library file) but when I go to the music sync panel under my iPhone panel, I see only some playlists are selected whereas I had mainly manually selected some full albums. So now I have two options: sync only the playlists (392 songs) or syncing nothing. In both cases most (all in the latter case) of the music on the iPhone would be erased and I would need to manually select the files again and resync. Nothing terrible, but quite time-consuming as it was a lot of music within a huge library (2800+ files among 23000+).
NB: If I restore the backup of all the 6 files mentioned above, songs are correctly selected and apps are correctly seen.. but of course songs point to the wrong location (and I really don't want to manually update location of 23000+ files ). So these information are not somewhere else than the 6 files.. maybe in one of the Library Extras file... which are unfortunately rebuild together with the main library.. so how can I rebuild the Library without loosing those information? Or alternatively, is there any othr way to automatically update location of all files?

I recently changed drive location to all my music (23000+ mp3) on my pc: ie: from D:\music to E:\music
Why? Assuming drive E: is bigger to accommodate an expanding library is there a good reason why, having cloned the media across to it, you didn't then swap the drive letters around? This would be a lot easier than messing with the XML file rebuild trick which, as you have found, has a number of drawbacks.
If reassigning drive letters doesn't suit you then do this:
    Restore the original library files.
Open iTunes, play a song, (forces it to update the database), close iTunes
Copy the files iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork to D:\ (ignore the xml and bonus extras file)
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. You should be asked to choose or create a library. Click Choose and open the library file D:\iTunes Library.itl
Check that the library is working properly by playing a track. Close iTunes.
Copy the files iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library.xml, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folder Album Artwork from D:\ to E:\
Shift-start iTunes and open the library file E:\iTunes Library.itl
Check that the library is working properly by playing a track.
Use the menu command File > Library > Organise Library > Consolidate files to catch any stray references to files outside your media folder.
Use the menu command File > Library > Organise Library > Rearrange files in the folder <media folder> (if available) to update the structure of your media folder.
Close iTunes, rename E:\Music to E:\iTunes Media, start iTunes.
    Check media still plays.
Close iTunes, create a folder called E:\iTunes, then move iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library.xml, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, sentinel and the folders Album Artwork & iTunes Media from E:\ to E:\iTunes
Shift-start iTunes and open the library file E:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
    That's all folks.
Your library is now properly organised and self contained on drive E:. Next time you want to move if just copy the whole thing in one go to a new location of your choice and use the shift-start-iTunes method to open it. Or you can change the drive letter of this drive and when iTunes complains that it can't find the library you can browse to the new X:\iTunes and the library will work correctly. You can backup the folder E:\iTunes to another drive or network share using this User Tip and that backup will be a fully functioning copy of your library on whatever path you choose to keep it.

  • IPhoto '09 crashing after rebuilding library - crash log included

My problems started when I tried to rebuild my library so I could burn back-up DVD's for my iPhoto library. Along the way I realized Time Machine never backed up my iPhoto library (although it backed up everything else on my internal and external HD's), "Faces" deleted many of my contacts of the cork board and the heading dates and descriptions are now missing from the "photos" section. I have tried to rebuild the thumbnails, library, permissions, etc by opening iPhoto with option and apple depressed while opening iPhoto.

    Please help!

    That
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE
is always a Data Related issue. There is probably one or more damaged jpegs in that Library somewhere.
As neither iPhoto's rebuild nor iPhoto Library Manager rebuilding is working I'm afraid you're only option is a manaual rebuild.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 09* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars, Faces, Places etc. This is +starting over from scratch+
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
If you get crashes during this process then the files you're importing at that time are the likely cause.

  • IPhoto 8.1.2(424) just will not quit.  Even after rebuilding library

I am using iPhoto on a shared folder between two users. Somehow my iPhoto just will not quit. I tried Command option to start iPhoto to rebuild the library but it still did not work.
the only way I can quit is to force quit it. Any help will be great. Thanks.

Make sure the other user is not using the library at the same time. Create a test library, add a couple of photos in it, put in the same shared folder and try it.

  • Lost photos after iPhoto library rebuild - what happened?

After noticing that there were albums entitled Recovered photos in my iPhoto library, I deleted those albums. As expected, i got a message that i was not really deleting the originals, just getting rid of such albums. There were about 5 of those "recovered albums": one contained about 30 photos; three had zero and another had over 1000 photos. Subsequent to that, thinking of making this library totally clean, I decided to do a "libraty rebuild" using the option-command rebuild procedure of iphoto. I checked all the options presented for that procedure. To my surprise, when the process was finished I had less events, and less photos. A careful visual check of the display pane of events and photos confirmed that i had lost actual photos. I tried to reclaim those lost photos with another rebuild -- this time using iphoto library manager, but without success. What happened? Is there any way to reclaim those lost photos?
I do have a backup, but would prefer to correct the problem in the original library to avoid having to assemble and clean up duplicates that i had before.
I'm using the newest version of iPhoto: 8.1 and OS X 10.5.8 on a MacBook 2.4 Ghz - 2Gb Ram - 250 GB HD, 42 GB available. My iPhoto library has over 12000 photos

Why these things happen is always difficult to answer. My experience with iPhoto is using it since v1 on with a single library that's upgraded each new versions and migrated from G4 iMac to G5 iMac to Intel iMac and then a second Intel iMac. I load photos in, my wife does and my 12 year old does too.
    And never had a problem.
The database gets corrupted when the app is interrupted when writing to it. The usual causes of this include a crash, a force quit or a lost connection to the Library on an external disk. More rarely minor disk or directory damage might be a cause.
I wondered when I read your report
Subsequent to that, thinking of making this library totally clean, I decided to do a "libraty rebuild" using the option-command rebuild procedure of iphoto. I checked all the options presented for that procedure.
The options presented for that procedure include various items that require the app to read the database file plus this one
Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
+I Wonder+ - I stress, I wonder, no more - if reading to rebuild various thumbnails from a file that is being vacuumed +while at the same time+ is being replaced by a backup is what caused the issue.
If it is, then the Rebuild from Back Up option should be sandboxed and not possible while the other events are going on.
    But that's just a guess.

  • Best way to restore game app data to iPad after rebuild

I rebuilt my UMBP over the weekend. Before doing so I took a copy of my documents, movies etc, and the entire iTunes library folder and placed it onto an external HDD. This was not a Time Machine backup, but a straight copy. After rebuilding, reinstalled latest iTunes and copied just the songs back across and re-authorized the library. I didn't copy the entire folder into the new place, but I still have all the items.
When I went to connect the wifes iPad for sync, it begins the whole "new device" process and must be "erased to sync." Problem with this is she has one or two apps on there with significant game data (Bejeweled for instance) that she doesn't want to loose.
Any advice on best way to resolve this, i.e. able to connect the iPad and sync to rebuilt machine without losing the data? Can I obtain the old backup(s) from the folder and use that or am I better just copying the entire folder across from the external drive onto the rebuilt machine. I did have a search and while there is plenty of backup / restore advice, nothing seems to match my situation 100%.
    Thanks in advance.

Try to backup manually. Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your device, right click on it in the device list and choose backup. This will copy all settings, photos and 3rd party data including your game settings to iTunes. Do the same thing to transfer your purchases to be sure to have the latest apps and media copied over.
Set up at least one contact and event on the computer, so that calendars and contacts are being merged during the first sync.
Since all data will be erased during this first sync, use this backup to restore your settings afterwards.

  • Iphoto won't display photos or run a slideshow. Thumbnails all OK etc. Tried rebuilding library and reset Mac Air but no result.  Ideas please!!!!

Iphoto won't display photos or run a slideshow - just a black screen. Can't see photos to edit etc. Thumbnails all OK and all else seems visible in the usual way etc. Tried rebuilding library and reset Mac Air but no result.  Ideas please!!!!

and was told to go home and rebuild the photo library (there are 2257 photos). Did this but problem is still there.
When you rebuild the library did you rebuild the database?  Also did you repair the library's permissions? Is this the First Aid window that you got?
Those are the two options to use.
Here's another fix you can try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
You'll have to recreate your slideshow after using this method.

  • Will I lose my photos if I "rebuild my library database" in iPhoto?

Please help! I opened iPhoto and it says I need to rebuild my library database. It is running now but doesn't seem to be moving. I am afraid I am going to lose all of my pictures... I have thousands. Has anyone been through this before? Are all of my pictures going to be gone after "rebuilding"?
    Thanks!

Thanks. I have been unable to access my photos for the last day or so. I tried restarting a couple of times and still had the same difficulty. The rebuild completed and I have my photos again (whew!!! I was afaid I'd lose thousands).
Thanks for the recommendation to back it up. I've been meaning to. Is the best way to use an external drive or Time Machine?

  • After iPhoto quit unexpectedly, the last 5 months of photos disappeared from my library. Please help!

After iPhoto quit unexpectedly, the last 5 months of photos disappeared from my library. Please help! I can't find them anywhere.

    You're using iPhoto 6?
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
