IPad protection on public wireless network?

Is there any protection on iPad to prevent someone from accessing my data on a public wireless network?  I know not to enter a credit card number in public, but what about the email password that is already saved there?

On an open wireless network, anyone on that network can capture the network traffic and see any clear-text data.  Your e-mail password is safe IF you've got things set up to connect via SSL.  Go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then select the account.  Edit the account, tap the Advanced button, and make sure Use SSL is turned on.
That protects your password, but note that the contents of any messages you send and receive are, and always have been, plain text send in the clear.  So don't send anything sensitive via e-mail.  That's good advice in general, but especially relevant on an open wireless network.
Beyond that, nobody can remotely hack your iPad and get access to the data on it.  It's just the data you're sending and receiving you've got to worry about it.

  • Privacy on public wireless network

what can i do to keep my personal information and passwords protected when using a public wireless network? what settings should i use?
i'm still new to macs so the basics and step by step instructions would be great.
    thx.

Regardless the platform - OS X or Windows, you need to assume anything sent out over a wireless network is being intercepted in transit (which is always a possibility) regardless if access to the wireless network is password protected/encrypted or not and act accordingly.
As far as someone gaining access to your computer when connected to a public wireless network or to any network, you need to keep the built-in Firewall included with OS X enabled and don't enable any ports or services not needed such as Windows File Sharing and Personal File Sharing, etc.
Go to System Preferences > Sharing to be sure the Firewall is enabled and check for any ports or services that are enabled but not being used.

  • Using public wireless network, security settings?

    Hi there,
I'm a new Mac user. If I'm using my MacBook Pro on a public wireless network, do I need to change any security settings to prevent other users from accessing my documents/hard drive etc?
    Thanks in advance.
    M.

Yes turn of guest access to your computer in the accounts preference pane.
Turn off any sharing protocols you may have enabled in your sharing preference pane.
In the security preference pane click on the firewall tab and set access for specific services.
Also when using public wifi it is a good idea not to use email or connect to any online banks etc.

  • HT1695 Ipad will not find wireless networks that it used yesterday, but MacBook Pro still finds and uses these networks.

Our ipad will not find wireless networks that it used yesterday.   Our Mac Book Pro finds them and uses them.
we have reset the cable modem and wireless router, turned off the ipad and turned it back on.   Turned wireless off and back on.
but it just spins trying to find networks but finds none.
    What do do next?

Settings for wireless network connections are actually stored in two separate places on your Mac, so in addition to the correct advice offered by Jolly Giant, you will also need to delete old network listings in KeyChain Access.
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
Locate the name of the wireless network that you want to delete and click it to highlight it
    Click Delete on your keyboard
It would be a good idea to go ahead and also delete the current connection as well in case it has become corrupted. This will clear out the old settings and when you next connect to the network and enter the password, the new settings will be preserved.

  • Does anyone know how to get an ipad to use the wireless network from an airport?

Does anyone know how to get an Ipad to use the wireless network from an airport express?

By default, the AirPort Express will broadcast an unsecure wireless network with a Network Name of something like: Apple Network NNNNNN. Your iPad should "see" this network and be able to connect to it. Have you tried going through the iPad's Settings > Wi-Fi > Choose a Network... option. If so, does the AirPort's wireless network appear in the list of available networks?
Can other wireless devices connect to the AirPort's network?

  • Why won't my iPad 2 join my wireless network?

I have the password for my wireless network. This password works perfectly and is accepted by my MacBook, my iPhone, and friends Windows machines when they come for a visit.
When I enter my password into iPad 2, it seems to accept the password, with a checkmark next to my wireless network name.
However, next to the Wi-Fi symbol it says “Not Connected”.

Come on Apple, just give me a response to say that there is a problem so I can stop wasting my time trying to connect.
This is a user-to-user technical support forum - Apple is not listening or responding here. Some Apple employees administer these forums but it's extremely rare that Apple ever posts anything here.
Note that, while there may be a problem with your iPad, the fact that another computer connected to this network does not prove that there is a problem with your iPad. There could still be a bug in the router software which only shows up on the iPad (not all WiFi devices, especially low-power devices, use exactly the same features of the IEEE 802.11x protocols). Test your iPad on some other networks. If it has problems there as well then it needs service or replacement.

has anyone come across this and what can i do about it?
    Thanks, Gary

If the iPad is bouncing between the networks, than that is likely an issue with the iPad wireless supplicant behavior. The error message in red above is likely due to the device switching with fast-ssid change disabled.
So, if we are more concerned with why the device keeps moving between networks, we should capture a bit more data. Running a longer client debug should give us some additional data points.
I've seen similar behavior with Apple devices when they "Remember" wifi networks -- sometimes you need to "Forget" other networks in the area to stop the device from associating to it automatically.
Also, version of WLC code are you running?

  • I'd like to debug and iPad problem joining a wireless network. Is there anyway to debug the network / system calls made while access an SSID?

We have multiple 802.1x networks, where iPads on occasion are unable to connect. There is no apparent contact by the 802.1x supplicant to join the network, and the usually the network settings both on the iPad and in the wireless systems works. So it doesn't appear to be configuration related. I'd like to debug the network protocol stack on the client, or look at iPad system logs to determine what is going on when an iPad refuses to join a network. Thanks

Yes they are centrally managed via cap/wap using PEAP/WPA1. The problem is that when this problem occurs none of that protocol is executed as far as I can tell. Hence digging into a debug log might provide a clue.

  • Blank window when connecting to public wireless network

I'm having trouble connecting my Macbook Pro to the wireless network at my folks' nursing home. The MBP can see the private and public networks, but when I try to connect to the public network, a blank window pops up - no text or buttons. My nephew's Windows laptop connects with no problems. I'm running 10.7 (Lion). Any ideas?

A guess would be that your university uses a different encryption than your home wireless and that your driver has problems with that. If you search this bbs with your driver's name (and that encryption), you will also encounter a number of freeze problems when using newer kernels. However, those drivers and kernels move quick, so if you see an error in a post from 2 months ago, the error might have vanished already.
Second, you should find out the card you are using with
    lspci -nn | grep Realtek

  • Can't connect to an public wireless network

    Hello,
I'm having trouble connecting to my college's wireless network. I've connected to it before. It loads a sign in page for you to login with your school ID . Since last week, I can see the network in my airport with full bars. The login page does not load and it says im not connected to the Internet. I've also put in the login page URL but that does not load either. The college's IT guy says he has seen this problems many times with macs this semester only. He said it might had been affected by a recent update.
I can connect to my wireless network at my house and also at my parents so I don't understand why I can't connect! Also , the login page loads on my iPhone.
Thanks to anyone with any answers!

I have talked to other Mac and window users who were online.. So I'm not sure why I can't connect! The tech guy told me to make sure that my mac wasnt remembering my wifi settings

  • MacBook not connecting to public wireless network

So I have had this MacBook for 3 years now, and I have always been able to connect to my wireless network at work, which is password free.
But over the past few days, my MacBook has not been able to connect, have tried everything I know( not a computer whiz, but can survive)
I have gone on network diagnostics, and all the icons on the left panel( airport, airport settings, network settings, ISP, Internet, server) are all red instead of green.
I can still connect to my home network.
    Please. Need your help.
Ps: my workplace network administrator has not made an new changes to the network.
    Thanx

Hi, I had the same problem : airport was not automatically connecting to the previous network.
After browsing a while on the forums I came to think that the solution was to start all over from the begining. So I deleted the information mac os has from my network (ssid + wep key). After inputing it again the issue was gone.
More precisely I gone to system prefs, then to network prefs, then to airport prefs. Then I chose "by default, connect to prefered network". Then I deleted my prefered network. After that I desactivated airport, reactivated it and inputed my settings.
    hope that'll help

  • Protecting a Linksys Wireless Network

I recently bought a Linksys Wireless G router -- my MacBook recognized it immediately. However, since the router came with a CD with only Windows documentation, I was unable to do any initial setup to create a WEP (correct term?). I searched the internet and found someone who had pretty much the same setup and they had a nice tutorial which I saved to my desktop, thinking I was home free. Well, I've never done this before and I have to admit, I still don't get it. And, I'm afraid of changing settings which will disable my great connection. Does someone else have a similar setup, and could they maybe help me walk through the steps necessary so I don't screw this up? Thanks!
    Curt

You can access the Wireless Encryption from any computer with a browser. You just need to know the IP address to find this "configuration" page. Depending on what your router is, your IP will be http://192.168.x.1 x being from a range of 0-3. When you login to your router, your username or password is admin (considering if you didn't change it already). Once you are in your router's configuration, there you can change the Wireless Security to WEP, WPAI, WPAII, etc. You will then need to set the same code into your Macbook or any other wirless computers to access this wireless internet. It is not a secret to protect Linksys Networks, its more like common sense.

  • IPads were kicked off wireless network

We have 12 iPad2's that worked perfectly with the wifi on Friday, none will connect to the wifi on Monday?????  I have rebooted the school network, rebooted the iPads, uninstalled and reinstalled itunes on the laptop (yes the laptops connect to the wifi-before and after the reboot). any more ideas?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • We're do I go on my iPad to enter my wireless network key number

We're do I go to enter my wireless net work key ? Number

    Hi Barbaraclark,
If you are seeing Client ID, then it sounds like you are already connected to your Wifi. When you initiallly set it up, it should ask for a Newtork Name and also have a Security option. Under the Security option, you would see:
    WEP
    WPA
    WPA2
    WPA Enterprise
    WPA2 Enterprise
Usually your network key would be a WEP key, but not always - depends on what your provider has.
However, you do not see the page with the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, etc. (with Client ID at the bottom of the list) unless you are already connected.
So, not sure what you are looking to do?

  • How do I get my iPad to recognize my wireless network printer

My I pad does not recognize my hp309 wireless through th same home network? It is very confusing to me seems there are many methods? I can't seem to simplify it enough for my success. Thanks barry

Below is the current list of sirprint supported printers, and unfortunatly, i do not see the 309 listed in the hp section.
Your next approach would be an app like printopia, that lets you wirelessly print thru your computer.  Also, take a look at the hp print app and see if that does what you need.  I believe it is meant for pictures.
