Ipad read only full restore failed

Hi There,
My iPad won't retard after I have installed a the new version of the iOS. It wasn't starting before and thought this seemed to be a solution.
I have attached a picture of the error message that shows up. Anyone ever experience the same issue and found a solution?

I have an iPad4 that did the same thing (freezing, locking up, suddenly restarting, etc) right before it finally locked up for good / no longer works - couldn't restore or hard reset.  This happened soon after I updated to iOS 7.1.1. The local Apple Store confirmed it's dead / can't be fixed - 'update probably caused a hardware failure'...  My iPad4 is only 16 months old (so is no longer under warranty).  I never had a single problem with it until this happened.  My wife has the same device purchased at the same time - she hasn't updated to iOS7.1.1 yet and her iPad is still working fine.  The only remedy I rec'd from Apple - we'll sell you a 'replacement' iPad for $299 with a 90-day warranty...  Unbelievable.  Needless to say - not a happy customer...

  • How is it that I now have someone elses photos on my ipad after a full restore?

    I had to restore my iPad 2 on Friday due to a problem booting. When I finally restored it back to factory settings I started to noticed elements of someone elses account on it. There are photos in my Camera Roll that are not mine. When I first logged into Facebook it suggested a username (email address) that was not mine. The email accounts of someone else are also partially set up. I have had this iPad from new out of the box so how can this have happened? I am now worried that my photos and other accounts are mixed up with someone else!!!

    The only way that I can see this happening is if you restored somebody else's backup to your iPad. If you completely erased the iPad and restored as new there is no way somebody else's information or photos could possibly be on the iPad.

  • Open directory 'read only' after restore

    Hi
    I have restored open directory using sudo slapconfig -restoredb after our server hangs on a restart and subsequently loses the master record, users etc.
    All appears OK except that I am unable to add or remove users via the Server.app. It appears as though the restore process has given the OD read only permissions?
    Any ideas

    Please update Mountain Lion and OS X Server to the latest versions (App Store) and use Workgroup Manager 10.8 to manage your users.

  • Pacstrap failed. Now I have a read-only filesystem that is unusable

    I have been using Linux for the past few years (primarily Ubuntu and Fedora), and have used the command line a lot.
    I was just following the instructions on the Beginners guide. I set up wifi, and partitioned the disk using gdisk (all my computers since late 2009 have not used MBR). I then set up my mirrorlist (left the first one, and added my university as second).
    When I ran pacstrap (without -i), it started downloading everything. I think it finished most of it. The kernel had been downloaded, and the filesystem supposedly set up. Then, I got an error. (I am not sure where it was, and I wasn't logging the output. There were many many lines of:

    Trying to rerun pacstrap gets me an error that the lockfile still exists. I cannot remove it because it is a "read-only filesystem". Its permissions are 000, and the folder it is in (pacman) has 755.
    I also cannot make an fstab or continue with the installation.
    I tried to run the setup again, and it kept failing. (MBR failed too, with the same error.)
    What do you think caused it, and what could I do to resolve it. I couldn't find anything like that in the forums, or on google.

    Are the ext4 errors not a dead giveaway that the FS (or physical disk) are misbehaving? It's remounted itself read-only to prevent further damage.

  • [solved] system crash: / read-only and /home not mounted

    After a complete system crash due to resizing my partitions I am now at the point of restoring everything step by step.
    Having had bunches of kernel panics I can now already boot again into my old system. However, / is mounted as read-only manifesting in error messages for programs that access /var and /usr. Furthermore /home is not mounted at all.

    I did a very dump thing. I deleted my /dev/sda1 ntfs partition, moved /dev/sda2 containing my lvm volumes to the left, resized /dev/sda2 and allocated the free space to my /home logical volume group. Lots of files ended up to be corrupt, I reinstalled all packages and ran fsck several times. Now at least it is starting again. I just found out that the entire root partition is mounted as read-only. In the following is the entire journal excerpt:

  • Cant boot, Read-only filesystem

    Hi guys
    Sry if this isnt the right section to post, but i didnt find any section in the forum where my problem fit.
    So, today i was working on my laptop, and at the same time updating the system when the power went down. When the power came back Arch woudnt boot, a lot of Read-Only File system errors are trown, this are some examples:
    Removing leftover files
    failed to create file /var/log/wtmp: read-only file system
    failed to create file /var/log/btmp: read-only file system
    chmod(/tmp) failed: Read-only file system
    chmod(/var/tmp) failed: Read-only file system
    Saving dmesg log
    impossible remove <</var/log/dmesg.log read-only>>:Read-only file system
    I dont know what to do anymore, ive tried booting with a pen and "fsck root partition" didnt work, then i chrooted and pacman -Syu and it throw errors too.
    I have school work to do and i need my computer ASAP
    Plz Help

    You can use pacman from the pen with the relevant options so that it updates the stuff on your root and also the database there. See the wiki or the manual page for details.
    Otherwise, posting actual error messages is generally more likely to get useful responses than "it didn't work" or "it throw [sic.] errors".
    EDIT: Does nobody use apostrophes these days?

  • How to make Select List Read only (Keep key Data)

    I'd like to make a select list read only when the screen is in maintenance mode because the select list value is part of the key.
    However, when I make the select list read only, the update fails because it appears making it disable lose's it's value.
    How can I make a select list read only and keep it's value for update.

    When I click apply changes, my Validation check that doesn't allow nulls in the "P5_LTY" fires saying the field can't be null. The select list is grayed out and I see the value, but the validation check thinks it's null.

  • Time Machine just stopped working, Disk Repair & Read Only errors

    So my TM backups have been running fine for at least six months now.
    Today I started to get this error:
    "Disk Repair
    The disk "xxxxxx" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."
    followed by
    "Time Machine Error
    The backup volume is read only.
    To select a different volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine"
    I've searched high and low for a solution to no avail.
    Here's what I've tried so far.
    Attached disk to iMac, repaired the disk. It now verifies with no errors.
    Changed permissions on the disk to 644 through terminal as per an Apple article.
    Rebooted iMac several times, zapped PRAM.
    Anyone have any ideas as to why this is suddenly happening? I would really hate to have to reformat the disk and start from scratch. This is very frustrating, I've changed nothing.
    Here's the log from Time Machine Buddy:

    This was posted in the Apple Discussions by V.K. I have only modified it slightly to be more generic.
    The problem seems to be that 10.5.6 changes permissions on a file so that even the root user doesn't have write peivileges. I have no idea why they did this. The workaround suggested in [an]other post will probably work, too, but i did something less drastic. Instead of deleting the file I changed permissions on it, and it worked just fine. An added benefit is that the permission change seems to stick, so you don't have to delete the file every time you change a drive.
    [Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt [enter] the following command:
    sudo chmod 644 /volumes/"TM drive name"/.xxxxxxxxxxxx
    The name of the file .xxxxxxxxxxxx is based on the MAC address of your computer and will be different for every computer. Put the name of the TM drive in the above and keep the quotes.
    You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see) which is normal.

    Only a full restore is possible.
    However, there are some computer applications which can extract information from a backup file.

  • Time Machine backup failed - "Read Only" - does that mean external HD is full?

    Just received an error message re: Time Machine -
    Time Machine Could not complete the Backup.
    Files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be "read only"
    Does this mean I have to try and repair the external HD OR can it mean the external HD is full (which I was expecting) and I need to start a new one?
    When I open Preferences, it says "Available: 2.04 of 319.94 GB
    Oldest Backup - (blank)
    Latest Backup - Failed
    I have turned it off and don't want to do something stupid.
    So, should I follow directions to try to reformat the disk using Disk Utility? Does it mean everything on there is potentially lost?

    The backup drive has malfunctioned and corrupted itself. If that has ever happened before, or if it ever happens again, replace the drive. You may want to consider replacing it anyway for the safety of your data.
    You should start another backup now, on another drive, if you don't already have one. One backup is never enough to be safe.
    If you choose to keep using the problem drive, turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane, then launch Disk Utility, select the backup volume, and run Repair Disk. This operation may take several hours. If that action doesn't solve the problem, you'll have to erase the volume and start over. Don't do that unless you have at least one other complete backup. Remember to turn TM back ON.

    Notes: I just upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) in the last week. It’s the first time I’m tried to backup/update my iPad since the iMac update.
    I swapped out the USB cable to a new cable and get the same results.
    I also unplugged all other USB devices from the iMac and security on my iPad and still get the same results.
    I find it strange that it shows no Serial number for my my iPad 2 when plugged in. It shows “Serial Number: n/a on the screen when it displays: “iPad Recovery Mode To update your iPad without erasing its contents, click Update. To restore your iPad to its factory settings, click Restore iPad.
    I prefer to update my iPad, but it displays “Your iPad can’t be updated, you must restore it to factory settings. If you previously backed up the iPad, click Restore Backup after the restore process completes.”
    It’s a continuous loop. I get the display on my iPad to plug in the iPad to iTunes, plug it in which ends after going through the above procedure saying an error occurred (9).
    So now I cannot use my iPad. When I turn it on I get the display showing me to plug it into iTunes with the cable. Since this is the only option I have I plug it in and the loop begins.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Related errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1000, 1611, 9006. Sometimes security software can prevent your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
    Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't preventing a connection to the Apple servers.

  • [SOLVED] More rsync problems after restore... Read only filesystem?

    Yesterday I backed up all of my data with rsync to a USB thumb drive. Surprisingly it all fit, but my intentions were to wipe my disk and create a new partition scheme for a dualboot while still being able to continue where I left off with arch. So after backing up with the script from the arch wiki titled full system restore with rsync, I followed the rest of that page, and modified the fstab on the backup on the USB and reconfigured grub and restarted my computer and I was able to boot into the USB. Then, I decided that it would be easier to just use the live cd to repartition and pacstrap the base system and generated an fstab. Next, I chrooted from the livecd environment into the newly built base and installed rsync. I then mounted my USB to /mnt in the chrooted environment and used
    rsync -aAXv /mnt/ARCH_BACKUP/* / --exclude={/mnt/ARCH_BACKUP/etc/fstab,/mnt/ARCH_BACKUP/boot/grub/}
    I just did this since I figured that all of the directories excluded in the script wouldn't really have to be excluded here since they were already empty. Everything seemed to run smoothly except for one file(or maybe directory?) called /etc/resolv.conf.t.jbnW2 which kept giving an error. I figured the file was unique to the USB or something and continued to reinstall grub and then reboot. The weird thing is that everything was back on my system, but it didn't automatically boot into a display manager which it's set up to do. Then when trying to manually start x, that wouldn't work. Then I tried to connect to wifi, it recognized my network but wouldn't connect, so I tried sudo su, which worked but returned an error that the var file system was read only. I then tried to use rsync again thinking maybe that directory would transfer now that I wasn't in the chrooted environment. But instead, it was trying to restore every single file, but every one returned the error "filesystem is read only".
    It seems like when I restored all of the files in my entire system were made read only.
    Can anyone tell me what may have caused this and how to fix it?
    I think it may either be that when I mounted the device in the chrooted environment I didn't specify 'rw' capabilities, or it may be that when I backed up I didn't specify 'rw' capabilities I just opened the file manager and clicked on it and it automagically mounted to /media/.

    Ok, well I fiixed it. I had edited the fstab on the usb to be able to boot into the usb, and, while I edited it again on the hdd each time I restored from the backup, I didn't realize that the top entry /dev/sda1 (which is my root partition) was on a line that was commented out.  I guess I accidentally hit the backspace button or something while editing it to be able to boot into the usb.
    Also, I think there was a second problem, that my usb controller is starting to fail. Because on the last time that I backed up, if I moved my computer or anything I would get a I/O error. This was caused by the failing usb controller. The computer would remount it as read-only because of the failure. The solution to this was to use
    hdparm -r0 /dev/sdxy
    Note: The device must be unmounted.
    Where x is the device and y is the partition number, for me this was sdb1.
    Then mount specifying read-write option.
    mount -o rw /dev/sdxy /media/<BACKUP>
    I also tried
    mount -o remount,rw /dev/sdxy /media/<BACKUP>
    as was recommended on all of the sites that I could find, but this command kept returning an error.
    Note: For newer users, Arch does not automatically create the media folder as it doesn't provide automatic mounting of external drives. If such is the case, and you haven't installed a desktop environment with a file manager that will automatically do this for you when the device is recognized, you must make the media directory and the directory which you intend to mount to manually.
    # mkdir /media
    # mkdir /media/<BACKUP>
    Where <BACKUP> can be whatever you want it to be.

  • Full restore from Time Machine fails

    I am trying to replace a failing hard drive. The failing drive in in a box. A new one is in the computer.
    When I try to run a full restore from Time Machine it comes up with an error saying the restore failed. No useful information like codes or reasons are given.
    I'd prefer to do a full restore, but I fear the cause is too much system file corruption on the TM drive. I think the only alternative is to recreate the four user accounts and somehow copy the files back to the accounts.
    Before I swapped the drives I set all permissions on the files in each account to admin=read/write, user=read/write, other=read only. I then created a couple incremental backups to Time Machine.
    Currently I have 10.5.0 installed. I have to install 10.4, then upgrade, which is a very lengthy process.
    The old drive is still (barely) functional. While using it though, if I try to run any program, the system hangs for minutes at a time, (BBOD).
    How should I proceed? Is there a way of repairing the backup? Do I try the copying all the files? I have no way of using the Migration feature since I only have the one Mac. I do have a PC.

    Possibly, depending on what's wrong.
    Instead of selecting +Restore System from Backup+ from the Utilities menu, select +Disk Utility+ and use it to do a +*Repair Disk+* on the backups (via your Leopard Install disc). Then quit DU and try +Restore System from Backups.+
    I have no way of using the Migration feature since I only have the one Mac.
    Yes, you do, if the backups are ok. You can use +Setup Assistant+ or +Migration Assistant+ from your backups (or a clone), not just another Mac. But they both only use the most recent backup, which may be damaged, so try the full restore first.

    I have an iPad 2, which was purchased online in May 2012. My iPad will not charge - the upper right-hand corner shows a charging symbol, but the iPad does not gain power. I have tried the following:
    Charging the iPad with the APPLE USB cable and APPLE wall plug provided with the iPad in several different wall outlets
    Charging with another, alternate apple cable (in case the apple cable I was using wasn't working)
    Charging with an non-apple cable and plug into a wall socket
    Charging the iPad with an apple cable into my Mac
    Charging the iPad into a non-apple laptop
    Performing a soft reset, by pushing the home button and power key down until the iPad reset (tried this several times, before and after full restore)
    Performing a full restore, which involved updating my iPad to version 6.0, wiping the iPad clean, and then restoring it from a back-up (tried this several times)
    Charging the iPad while completely powered off
    Letting the iPad completely die, and then charging it - it took me several weeks to get any power back and for the red charging symbol to go away - I did this by leaving it plug into my non-mac laptop for several days, after which it finally charged it back to 14%, showing the "Not Charging symbol" the whole time.
    Removing my case off the iPad (in case the case was blocking the proper insertion of the USB cable)
    Blowing on the iPad port to remove blockage from dust, etc.
    At this point, I'm not sure what else I can try. I combed the support threads thoroughly to ensure I didn't miss any other options, but I am hoping someone else may have thought of something I didn't try. I know that the fastest way to charge the iPad is to use the 10w USB cable provided by apple, into an outlet. I have tried this several times - it doesn't work. The charging symbol shows up in the right hand upper corner, but the display does not show a charging battery, and the iPad does not increase in charge.
    I do not live in a city with an Apple Store, so I am hoping you all can provide me with a solution, as it will be a 10+ hour round trip to get this resolved in person, in store.

    When you say " tried to reset it ", does that mean you tried holding down Home and Sleep till the screen went black and a white Apple logo appeared? That usually resets my batteries and lets them reach 100% charge.
    If all fails and the device has a few years on it, the battery may very well be dead. Happens to all rechargeables. A trip to the Store for assessment will be inevitable to check the charger, cable and device. And if needed, a battery replacement alternative will be offered.
