IPad reboots itself and thinks it needs to be restored as an iPhone

Help! My iPad keeps rebooting itself every few minutes (if I am trying to use it). It tells me that the iPhone can't make or receive calls(?)and that I need to restore from iTunes at www.apple.com/support. Obviously the iPad can't make or receive calls anyway.
The problem started with the wifi not working in my office building. Now I can't even get it to stay up without rebooting itself every 2 - 3 minutes. And it is continually searching for a signal, even though my iPhone has full signal. Anyone else getting this message?

I would connect it to your syncing computer and restore from backup.

yes wen i try booting in Safe Mode it behave the same. i have downloaded the combo update of 10.7.5 from another laptop, so how do i run it on my mac. THANKS for helping
The goal is to mount the combo update .dmg on the desktop and then open and run it. If you can't get to the desktop to begin with, that won't work. Another approach is to treat the Mac's hard disk as just another HD by using a second Mac and then connecting the problematic one via Target Disk Mode. See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661. Note that both Macs will need Firewire ports and you'll need a FIrewire cable to connect them. With the combo updater, one of the steps in the process is to select the drive you want to install the update on. Once you're successfully connected in Target Disk Mode, the problematic drive should appear in the list.
If that doesn't work or Target Disk Mode isn't possible, the only other solution is to boot into Recovery Mode; see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4718. Note that once booted into recovery mode, you have access to Disk Utility, and you should try running Repair Disk after selecting the bad drive to see if something's wrong with the directory which could be fixed. When you select that drive, you should also look at S.M.A.R.T. Status at the bottom of the window. It should say "Verified." If it says Failing or Failed, the HD needs to be replaced.
If the HD is OK, all that's left that I can think of is to reinstall Lion using Recovery Mode. I hope you've maintained current backups or at least complete Time Machine backups. Of course, if you have a backup and the backup is bootable, you could boot from that, wipe the internal HD clean, and clone the backup onto the internal HD.

Try a reset. Hold the Sleep and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo.

  • My iPad suddenly started displaying "Searching" up in the top left corner and now the ipad reboots itself after about 2-5 minutes.

My iPad suddenly started displaying "searching" up in the top left corner of the screen and the wifi symbol is next to it and I am connected to the wifi. Prior to last weekend it used to display Verizon and everything was fine. After about 2-5 minutes the iPad suddenly reboots itself. Can anyone assist with this. Thank you

Have you tried rebooting the iPad?
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Why does my iPad reboot itself, Why does my iPad reboot itself

My iPad tends to reboot itself for no apparent reason.
For example i was on Skype talking to a friend and it just rebooted itself.

I have iPad 3g+wifi 64 gb with and it's 2 years more old.
once a while it's fine, until suddenly there are "no simcard" issues after sleeping at night.
After that problem, i never had any signal using "any" simcard. also, after inserting simcard into my iPad, suddenly my ipad had this restart problem. so.. i were trying :
    1. reset network --- > still have a problem.
    2. restore on itunes ---> still have this problem though
    3. reset all settings ---> this one is good though, if you were reset all settings and you can see progress bar completing until the bar is full then next time it's finish reset, i can guarentee that my ipad will goes to "normal" even until now i only can use wifi only.  if you already tried reset all settings didnt change reboot suddenly behaviour, then you must try reset all settings all the time until you let it ipad without activating it for at least 10 minutes.
    for apple inc.
i hope you can fix this problem either it's hardware or software problem. mine is out of warranty but you need to handle this carefully, and don't let apple people say "I NEVER SEE THIS PROBLEM BEFORE" because you already had this communities and you sell product expensive as we bought it expensive as you sold. i have no intentions using genius bar if the solutions is only "REPLACE" but i have to pay another 4xx USD for a change because my iPad is no warranty. fix the problem or your customers go away. apple also has many issues right now including suddenly apps closing. hope apple inc willing to do their bests just like before. again.
    regards.

  • My iPad is locked and says it needs to be backed up

My iPad is locked and says that it needs to be backed up.  My home is  wi-fi hotspot, so the iPad is constantly connected.  I am having problems getting to merely turn-off.  Was there a software change recently?

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

My ipad is disabled and it says i need to connect to itunes when i connect it to itunes, it says it wont recognize it until i put my passcode into my ipad, but with my ipad disabled, this is immposible, how can i resolve this problem?

You may need to put the iPad into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 - you should then be able to reset the iPad an resync your content to it

  • Hi!  I just updated to Mountain Lion to make full use of iCloud, and I am attempting to turn on Photo Stream.  I currently have iPhoto '09, version 8.12, and think I need to update to iPhoto'11, but I'm reluctant to do this due to very bad reviews.

Obviously only you can decide what is "worth it".  Millions and millions and millions of people use and like iPhoto '11.  Some don't. If you want PhotoStream then you must upgrade to the minimum software levels

  • Driod 4 keeps rebooting itself and battery won't stay charged

What do I do about my droid 4 constantly rebooting itself after the verizon wireless update that was pushed out March 23 or so?
1st my phone was frozen after the update and I had to request a replacement phone.
2nd the replacement phone randomly just reboots, whether I am using it or not.
The battery barley stays charged even when it's on the charger.  I have all the data syncs off
I can't update my apps because the phone says it does not have network access., but I can make call and send text messages.
very upset about this, verizon should have tested the update further before pushing it out.  there was nothing wrong with my original phone, now I h ave a large paper weight that has to stay hooked to the charger.

        Hi alval!
I am sorry to learn of the rebooting issues with your phone after the latest software update. Let's get your phone our the paper weight mode and back into the awesome wireless device that it is! I had similar issues with my phone after the latest software update and I resolved all issues by doing a factory reset http://vz.to/TZvgLF as this clears any third party applications conflicts and any potential system errors created while processing update. Make sure to back up all your important media before doing factory reset as this process deletes all media and bring phone back to original state. Keep us posted.

  • IPad controlling itself and very poor customer service ;-(

    Hi,
I have a iPad 64gb 3g First Generation and it has starting controllingitself after around a minutes use.
If i open the drawing app, it will start drawing itself, if i open notes, itwill start typing itself.  Unfortunately, it's about 2 months out ofwarranty but i booked and attended a Genius Bar appointment today.
Beforehand, I had reinstalled ios 5, setup as a new iPad, taken it's out ofthe case, removed the screen protector and the problem is still there.
I arrived early at the Covent Garden Store in London and was told to waitand would be called when my turn.  The member of staff didn't seemintrested in me nor very welcoming therefore very un-approachable for me.
I had then been kept waiting for over 40 minutes by which time I then askedanother member of staff how much longer as other customers who arrived aftermyself have already been seen too.  I was then told that I am not checkedin and have missed my appointment.  I was then re-added to the queue andfinally seen to.
I showed the Genius Bar representative my faulty iPad who took it behind tothe repair room and then said there is nothing we can do,  it is faultyand a exchange will cost you £279+Vat but it is not worth it and advised toupgrade to an ipad 2.
The iPad is in brand new condition, not a mark anywhere, never been dropped, dented, dinged and now i have an iPad iBrick.
    Is this normal for apple?
Is there anything else i can do try and revive my ipad? ;'-(
    Thanks
    A very loyal upset icustomer!

I'm not sure what it is you're asking about being "normal". If you are asking about the failure being normal, no, it's not, but anything can fail at any time. Physical damage isn't necessary; something like a power surge could take out a weak component, and a static shock can damage even otherwise-pristine components.
If you're asking about the policy of being charged, then if your iPad is out of warranty and has suffered a hardware failure, then yes, this is entirely normal, and would be normal for any manufacturer of just about any product. You can try resetting and restoring the iPad and see if that makes a difference, but if that doesn't, then you will have to pay Apple's standard replacement charge for out-of-warranty service that you were quoted, or look for a third-party iPad repair service and see if they can fix it for less (doubtful but you can shop around and see).
    Regards.
