Ipad restore failed

My iPad only has the apple logo occassionally. It comes and goes. My computer iTunes fails to recognize my iPad. I got so far as to start the restore download and after about 20 minutes it failed. My error message is 0xE8000024. Not sure what is happening or if my iPad can be salvaged. I do have a backup in the iCloud, but since I can't make it recognize my device, that isn't doing me much good. Any suggestions? I have already uninstalled iTunes, and re-installed. I have done the two button hold, one button hold, the plug in to the USB while holding down a button. Every trick I can find, but no real answers. Suggestions?

Try recovery mode as described here:
HT1808
Note you may have to try to get in to recovery mode more than once to succeed.

  • Ipad restore fails error 2003

Was loading latest iPad update and it hung.  Itunes indicated the iPad needed to be restored.  Clicked on restore and received error 2003.

Same thing here.  I have an iPad 2 that was running iOS 5.0.1.  Everything worked fine when without any kind of sync over cable or wifi, all apps including free and purchased ones disappeared.  When I did connect it to iTunes, all apps were unchecked. So, I checked my apps, did a sync, and they all returned but missing all app data.
Long story short, things got a little flakey and I wanted to start from scratch so I plugged my iPad in to install the factory default firmware but I get the following error, " The iPad "iPad" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (26)." Tried this in DFU mode and in regular restore mode (when the iPad screen says to connect to iTunes). I tried different versions of iTunes and machines, OS 10.6, 10.7, and Windows 7, all giving the same error.  When attempting a restore, it goes through "Extracting software, Verifying iPad restore with apple, preparing iPad for restore, waiting for iPad, preparing iPad for restore, verifying iPad restore."  After the progress bar on the iPad is there for about 30 seconds, ERROR. I tried different things for hours with iOS 5.0.1, and I also get the same error with iOS 5.1, which was released today.

    Hi,
my girlfriend bought me an iPad in USA some weeks ago.
Everything was ok, but 3 days ago it turned off and asked to connect to itunes. After that it asked to restore. But failed with error 1002. I tried everything from this list: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275

I live in Russia and haven't chance to get help here, because our support deny assistance with iPad :(((
Next week I'll go to Berlin (Germany). The question is: can I exchange my device for a new one somewhere in Berlin (by resellers) ??? Or may be I can exchange it in Apple Store in Hamburg (I'll be there for a few hours).
Help me please and sorry for my English:)

    HI and welcome......
Or may be I can exchange it in Apple Store in Hamburg (I'll be there for a few hours).
Apple's policy for refunds or exchanges must be done within 14 days of purchase.
Take the iPad into the Apple store in Hamburg and explain what happened. Hopefully they can help.

  • IPAD restore fail

    Dear all,
Thank you in advance for any suggestions that could help me out.
I tried to restore my iPAD2 last night and received the following message: "The iPad "iPad" cannot be restored at this time because the iPad software update server could not be contacted or is temporarily unavailable."
Ever since, my iPAD screen has only displayed a USB cable and an arrow pointing to iTunes
I ran diagnostics and detailed my "Internet connection fail"-report in:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21868084#21868084
Again, I would very much appreciate any suggestions.
    Kind regards,
    userofipad2

The internet connection is now fine -although I don't know why- and I succesfully restored my iPAD2.
Please see the thread that I referred to for details.
I'll leave the post open for others with similar trouble to compare their diagniostic report with mine

  • HT1212 I am unable to get our of a continuous cycle when trying to update or restore my iPad 2. Plug in to iTunes 12.0.1 (latest version). Click update, told can't update, have to restore. Restore fails with error 9. Any help appreciated.

When I tried to update my iPad I got an error 9. Now, I am unable to access my iPad. It is in a continuous cycle when I try to update or restore the iPad 2. Plug in to iTunes 12.0.1 (latest version). Click update, told can't update, have to restore. Restore fails with error 9. Any help appreciated.
    Here's the cycle:
I plug in my iPad when “cable to iTunes shows on iPad screen. It says "Your iPad can't be updated, you must restore it to factory settings." That bad enough news, but it gets worse.
    Click Restore
    Extracting software…
    Preparing iPad for restore
    Waiting for iPad…
    Verifying iPad restore with Apple…
(empty bar under the Apple logo…does not show any activity)
“The iPad “iPad” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (9).”
Notes: I just upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 on my iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) in the last week. It’s the first time I’m tried to backup/update my iPad since the iMac update.
I swapped out the USB cable to a new cable and get the same results.
I also unplugged all other USB devices from the iMac and security on my iPad and still get the same results.
I find it strange that it shows no Serial number for my my iPad 2 when plugged in. It shows “Serial Number: n/a on the screen when it displays: “iPad Recovery Mode To update your iPad without erasing its contents, click Update. To restore your iPad to its factory settings, click Restore iPad.
I prefer to update my iPad, but it displays “Your iPad can’t be updated, you must restore it to factory settings. If you previously backed up the iPad, click Restore Backup after the restore process completes.”
It’s a continuous loop. I get the display on my iPad to plug in the iPad to iTunes, plug it in which ends after going through the above procedure saying an error occurred (9).
So now I cannot use my iPad. When I turn it on I get the display showing me to plug it into iTunes with the cable. Since this is the only option I have I plug it in and the loop begins.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Ipad 2- Failed Restore after 5.0. But it tried to backup again. Can I restore to previous backup or is all gone and overwritten?!?!

    This is what I did...
    Got latest Itunes...
9:30pm---Backed up and SYNCed my whole Ipad 2 which was a lil over 8GB onto my computer (LIKE AN HOUR)
**I had 2gb left free on my comp after that backup
Downloaded Ipad 2 (WIFI) direct 5.0 update file. (around 700mb)
    **around 1gb left on comp
    Shift+Restore>Selected the 5.0 update file
    UPDATED to 5.0
    Turned on Ipad
Selected "Restore Ipad", says its going to take 2 hours
Computer basically went to 0gb after an hour. which I dont know why it was trying to backup AGAIN for.
Itunes says restored failed. nothing on the Ipad, still on the "Connect to Itunes" screen. So I unplug n plug again. And it syncs n backsup for like 3 minutes.
I press restore again, it asks to restore to my 12:00midnight BACKUP?!?! not my 930 BACKUP?
Don't see any other option than just to do that one. It restores in about 2 minutes and I'm finally at the homescreen. NOTHING AT ALL except the apps that got synced.
Now I worry all is lost because now my computer says around 6gb free. What happend to my only having 1gb free after my 8 gb backup/sync?
Is there a way to restore from my wanted/initial/previous backup with all my photos n videos and everything??

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.

If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Follow Troubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
    Error 1600, 1601, 1602
Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. This error may also be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for  details on troubleshooting security software.

  • Ipad restore problem error 102

    Hi All,
I've diligently backed up our iPad and used TM to archive the backups.
Unfortunately now, when I need to restore from a backup I am getting the following error from AppleMobileBackup:
ERROR: Restore message response: 102 mkdir error: No such file or directory (2) at path "/var/mobile/Library/SafeHarbor/com.omnigroup.OmniGraffle/Container/Documents/S ite Wireframe & Mockup.graffle/QuickLook" (MBErrorDomain/102)
From reading that it looks like it is having trouble creating a directory on the iPad for some reason. I guess something wasn't getting saved correctly in the backup and thus can't get restored properly or this iPad directory was in a strange state when it was backed up.
I've searched the Web and there are some similar problems to this with different details (e.g. can't rename file) for the 102 error but no real solution.
I've tried a number of my backups going back a number of months and they all seem to have this error. I guess something on the iPad got messed up a while back and all the backups since then have it included, unfortunatley.
I'm wondering if anyone has a solution that can help me complete this restore?
I'm really not worried about Omnigraffle, I would happily reinstall it, but don't want to lose the rest of the backup.
I wonder if there is a way to make the backup continue / complete ignoring this error?
Or perhaps to remove everything with regards to Omnigraffle from the backup?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.
PS Not really happy when I have backed up all these times and now it is not working.  I think Apple's restore software seems a bit too fragile and should work around issues like this to do the best it can.
This is for an iPad 1 with iOS5.1.1 restoring from latest iTunes on Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.

    Hi BKN,
Thanks for your post and sorry to hear you are in the same situation (but it's good not to be alone ;-)
Some notes on your comments (can't seem to easily split quoted messages here):
    1. I don't  seem to get the "Unexpected connection closure..." error from iTunes that you get (not sure that is significant though)
    2. With regards to the special character(s) in the filename.  I have hex edited the manifest.mbdb and changed my "&" to a "A" in the filename and the problem still existed (with an "A" in the error path), so I hope we can rule that out.
    3. I have not really used Omnigraffle iCloud syncing, just turned on iCloud at the end of the change-over period and haven't used it for file sync-ing (at least not that I know of), so perhaps can rule that out.
    4. I have Dropbox running on Mac and client is on iPad (and iPhones).  I don't think my Omnigraffle docs have come anywhere near Dropbox though, again not use Omnigraffle on iPad for a while.  Have used on Mac quite a bit though.
    5. I am still running Lion on my MacBook Pro and the machine doing the iTunes syncing is a Mac mini running Snow Leopard Server, so I think we can rule out iCloud issues, again since I haven't really gotten into iCloud yet.
I have done a lot of investigating and experimenting (with no luck unfortunately).  I have used iBackupRobot (free version that works well, click cancel past the registration dialogs to get full functionality I believe) and Hex Fiend as mentioned above.
I also tried another one (called iBackupRestore or something like that but it required mono and X, which I had, but ran very slowly and failed - I think it only works for iOS4 or less). So, don't try that.
With iBackupRobot I extracted my problematic document and associated files. It gave me:
    Documents_Site Wireframe & Mockup.graffle
    Documents_Site Wireframe & Mockup.graffle_data.plist
    Documents_Site Wireframe & Mockup.graffle_data.plist.info
    Documents_Site Wireframe & Mockup.graffle_QuickLook_Preview.pdf
    Documents_Site Wireframe & Mockup.graffle_QuickLook_Preview.pdf.info
    Documents_Site Wireframe & Mockup.graffle.info
    _ is for /
The .info files just contain details of the mapping from real filename to the hex filenames inside the backup (useful to find the files and remove them as I did, see below).
I noticed that the data.plist file seemed to be empty so I filled it with content from another data.plist file in Omnigraffle's documents.  Interestingly, the error message changed a bit then (IIRC) to this:
    20/10/12 10:47:40 PM
    [0x0-0x37b37b].com.apple.iTunes[4493]
2012-10-20 22:47:40.605 AppleMobileBackup[30109:903] ERROR: Restore message response: 102 mkdir error: No such file or directory (2) at path "/var/mobile/Applications/8AF90D98-FB52-4E3E-877F-FD0A0F45C0A1/Documents/Site Wireframe & Mockup.graffle/QuickLook" (MBErrorDomain/102)
Note the path no longer includes SafeHarbor (which I believe is the temporary storage area whilst apps are being loaded etc). So some progress but a very similar error.
I have tried removing the hex-name files from the backup but MobileBackup detects them and says the backup is corrupt and will not proceed.  The problem is I can't see how we can edit the manifest.mbdb (apart from simple hex editing).
I've tried editing the plist files Manifest.plist and info.plist file (with Property List editor) but again no luck, deleting items (Omnigraffle application entries) is detected as a corrupt backup and MobileBackup will not proceed.
It is interesting how it is the QuickLook folder that is listed in the error.  Mine contains a Preview.pdf file which seems to be fine.
I'm also not sure what the error message actually means.  I guess it mean that when trying to create the QuickLook directory the path up to there didn't exist (e.g. the "Site Wireframe & Mockup.graffle" directory or one of its parents didn't exist).
    I could be wrong though.
I visited an Apple Store and tried to talk to a Genius but didn't get much help from the iPad Genius (should have registered for a Mac Genius apparently), he admitted he wasn't a Mac or iPad Genius (good on him) and went out back to ask his guru colleague.
He came back and said his colleague thought the real error was the -1, which he said indicated a hardware fault.
I don't think they knew what they were talking about, on some Apple support pages it does refer to -1 being something about hardware / comms fault, but I also think it is just a catch-all error code for iTunes when it doesn't know what else to report.
He suggested trying on another iPad but I don't have one and he wouldn't let me use one of theirs. I guess I could buy one and return it after testing for a refund, but I doubt it is a hardware problem myself.
I was hoping they may have some secret way to force the restore to continue or to selectively ignore certain applications on restoring (which may come to iTunes one day I hope).  It seems the Apple stores don't specialise in this kind of suppor though.
He suggested ringing Apple phone support / Applecare but I wasn't too keen on trying to explain this and share details over the phone.  I might give it a go, even though you had no success because I might luck out on someone who knows more etc.
I think I have done a full reset, sync'ed all apps and then tried the restore - fail.
I have tried so many things I am now having trouble remembering what I tried and how each failed.
My restore seems to go pretty well for quite a while before it fails, so I think it is restoring it's just getting an error when doing this one document for Omnigraffle and can't get past that.
If we could stop it restoring Omnigraffle I think we would be good to go but, as mentioned above, I can't see how we could do that without some serious editing of the backup, especially the plists and manifest.mbdb, but I am not expert ont hose.
Very sad to hear that Apple had no ways to work around a file or error.  I think it is a fault in their restore software - it is too fragile, not catching the said error and fixing the directory path. But I am not holding my breathe for them to assist (but will try to get help).
Thanks for your notes and please keep me informed of how you go / if I can help in anyway.
Unfortunately, I am very busy at work these days and can only work on this on the weekends.
    Cheers,
    Ashley.

  • 5s update/restore fail using itunes

i backed up my 5s with itunes so i could update my phone from 7.1 to 8.3; The update/restore failed; I have tried repeatedly; my phone is not functional, and I can't even restore to factory settings; In troubleshooting I have done the following: used most recent itunes,  disabled antivirus software  -still failing. My computer is running windows xp -is that why it is failing?  I don't know what to do. I need to get my phone back to functioning.

The answer to your question comes directly from the TS3694 article you attached above:
Error 1015: This error is typically caused by attempts to downgrade the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch's software. This can occur when you attempt to restore using an older .ipsw file. Downgrading to a previous version is not supported. To resolve this issue, attempt to restore with the latest iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch software available from Apple. This error can also occur when an unauthorized modification of the iOS has occurred and you are now trying to restore to an authorized, default state.

i iPad 3 fails to recognize cellular data In a number of locations Displays "searching and No Service" I have narrowed this to device problem. What can I do?

    Hello there, OSOSANYA.
The following Knowledge Base article provides a great checklist of steps and additional recommendations for troubleshooting issues with cellular connection:
iPhone: Troubleshooting a cellular data connection
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3780
Follow these steps for help troubleshooting cellular data issues on your iPhone. After performing each step, please test to see if the issue is resolved.
Toggle airplane mode: Tap Settings, turn airplane mode on, wait three seconds, and then turn off again.
    Restart your iPhone.
Make sure that your software is up to date:
Check for a Carrier Settings Update: Tap Settings > General > About.
Check for an iOS Software Update: Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
Note: Some updates may require a Wi-Fi connection.
Remove the SIM Card and reinsert it. Allow the iPhone to acquire the network again.
If your SIM card has SIM PIN enabled, try turning it off: Tap Settings > Phone > SIM PIN.
Try another location. If a different location works, but the original location still doesn't, contact your carrier to report the issue.
Reset network settings: Tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
    Restore the iPhone as new.
    Contact your carrier to:
Verify that the iPhone is properly set up on the account with the appropriate, current data plan.
Verify that there are no account-related blocks.
Find out if there are specific error messages in the carrier logs that could help determine why the issue is occurring.
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, contact your carrier, make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store, or contact AppleCare to troubleshoot further.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Apple Configurator - restore failed

I work in an educational institution.  I want to be able to set up one ipad, back that up using configurator and then restore that backup to all my other ipads.  I have updated all ipads to IOS 6.  I update all apps on one machine and put them in the folders that I want.  I created a profile that has the network login information and a few restrictions.  I backup the ipad that I have configured and then try to have it restored to the other ipads.  I get either restore failed or profile not verified. Either way, the apps are not on the ipad I am trying to restore to.  I have legal copies of all apps, some bought through the volume purchase plan and many free apps.  When the restore fails it is because it timed out.  Any suggestions?

I'm the IT tech at our University's library and we have 20 iPads surpervised.  i'm having this problem too since the iOs6 update.  I've tried to pinpoint a specific faulty application but found out that when I get to a certain number of icons (I tried with an app and with a web clip) the backup restore is failing.
If I click on the iPad's power button as soon as the screen shuts off when it shouldn't, the restore process finishes normally and the iPad can be used normally and there's no app missing.  If I wait for the timeout (yellow error icon and restore failed message) with the iPad still connected to the MAC and I power on the iPad, Apple Configurator detects the iPad and restarts the restore cycle but always hangs at the same step.
The only way to get past this is to stand next to the iPad when in restore mode and press the power on button for 2 seconds at the step where you should see the Apple logo and the progress bar.  This is really annoying and I was hoping for a fix in Apple Configurator v1.2.1...
Please tell me if you find a workaround or a fix...

Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:
    For PC

    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot

RecBoot may have problems on 64X windows, then try:

    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    Installs blootware on PC too
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Restoring iPhone, getting "restore failed"

I've been trying to restore my new iPhone from a backup from my previous one of two weeks ago, downloaded new iTunes, tried on a different computer and keep getting restore failed during the restore (on my phone) and the phone keeps promoting a restart.
    What could be the problem?

99% of the time the 1013 (gs.apple.com files) is what is causing it, on my ipad it just told me that the restore had failed but I followed the same steps and it worked.
    Here's a windows version:
    Step 1. Start –> Programs –> Accessories
Step 2. Run Notepad or WordPad
Step 3. Click “Open..” from File menu.
    Step 4. Browse to Windows/System32/drivers/etc
Step 5. In "files of type:" select all documents
    Step 6. Open "hosts"
Step 7. Delete all line that has "gs.apple.com" or something like that
    Step 8. Hit Save
    Step 9. Restore your device
