IPad's available storage on arrival

I got a 32GB last Saturday. When I was activating the iPad, I noticed that the avialble storage was a little over 29 GB.
Is this normal? Can anyone who bought a 32 GB model confirm?

kreme wrote:
Yes. In layman's terms, vendors 'round' the numbers off to make it sound like you're getting more space than you are.
No.
See below - rounding is not involved - its very precise. 32 does not 'round off' to 29 and a bit.

Well, we can't as we don't know what you consider as "more than enough". The built is quite heavy (like it can be 800mb) then it needs to be extracted to be installed before everything unneeded gets deleted...

  • May I increase available storage on my iPad mini? Model MD540FD/A.

Due to problems during uprade to iOS 8.02 I recognized, that there are only 4.5 GB available storage ON my iPad mini, so I had to erase some apps to be preparede for upgrad. Are there any possibilities to send the iPad to Apple to let them increase the storag And what costs I have to count with?

No, unless you choose to buy an iPad with more capacity.

  • IPad Air Not Calculating Available Storage Correctly / Restore Problem?

Just purchased a 16gb ipad air, restored apps and data from a backed up/no longer functioning ipad 2.  After all apps loaded settings is saying I have 0 of the 12.8 GB available. It also appears that the job finished but the software update page indicates restore is still in progress.     After adding up all the apps and data from the list there is <10gb.
Could the restore action be using up allocated space?
How can I tell what process is running and whether that is consuming the memory?   And, can I kill/cancel it (if it's still the restore)?
What makes me more suspicious is that after I delete a handful of apps the available storage increases "temporarily", then reverts back to 0 available.
I really do not want to reset all apps and data settings and reload manually since I have a few key apps from the old ipad 2 that I need to retain.  An suggestions or are there any known problems?
    Thanks.

I think I figured it out.  I went through my iPhone and turned off a lot of the apps that were slotted to backup and it appears to done the trick as the phone is backing up to iCloud.
The language needs to be broken down where it makes more sense of what's happening behind the scenes during these backups as I think it can be easily miscontrued that it's the data the various specific apps are using which is the issue at hand and not them apps themselves is what's causing the increase in size; some people may think that if they turn these apps off, they are deleting the apps from their devices so they leave them all switched on which ends up bumping up the size and ultimately eating up storage space.
I admit to not really paying attention to what the explanation was saying when I initially got the error message which made me initially post this.  Now that I'm rationally thinking, I can see the problem of the disappearing space and am off to turn off a handful of apps on the Air to reduce the storage allotment even more

  • IBooks books "Cannot Download" because "there is not enough available storage to download _______."

Before I begin, here are the details of my particular iPad:
    Build Version: 10B329
    iOS 6.1.3
16 BG iPad 2 (although it says that the capacity is 13.84 GB)
It has never been damaged nor has it experienced any water damage. It runs very well.
My issue: I am trying to download the ibook entitled Algebra 1 (Common Core Edition by Pearson) from the iBook Store. The ibook itself is only 2.46 GB large. After purchasing and upon downloading, however, I run into an issue. The book cover is placed on my iBooks bookshelf with the "New" ribbon on the upper-right. It then begins to download and, shortly after, I receive the following error message:
    Cannot Download
There is not enough available storage to download "Algebra 1". You can manage your storage in Settings.
    - Cancel
    - Settings
Having had issues with iBooks in the past, I thought this was just another glitch. But, in order to rule out any uncertainty, I checked my storage capacity anyways. On my first download, I am positive I had enough space on my iPad (although I can't remember how much). I had recently freed up my iPad by deleting videos and other apps. After doing all of that, I tapped the cover of the ibook again to initiate the downloading process. With more room, I was certain it would work, but then I received the same error message.
After that, I attempted to redownload the ibook after having tried each of the following techniques:
    - Turned off my iPad completely with iBooks still installed
    - Turned off my iPad completely with iBooks uninstalled, and then reinstalled it after turning the iPad back on
    - Deleting the ibook from iBooks, delete the iBooks app, completely turning off the iPad, and then redownloading everything after turning the iPad back on
    - Delete other ibooks
    - Transferring all of my bought ibooks to my iTunes on my computer (this technique actually worked for another on of my ibooks, but not for this one...)
    - Sign out of my iTunes & App Stores account and then signing back in
    - Turning ON the "Books" Automatic Downloads option
The only thing I think I haven't done is restore my iPad... Which I really do not want to do. Having to redownload all of those apps is a painstakingly long process...
Even now I have enough space to download it and it still gives me the same error message. My currect space specs are below:
    Storage
4.8 GB Available     9.1 GB Used     (Most of this is from iBooks as you can see)
    iBooks               5.7 GB
    Japanese          221 MB
    Facebook          114 MB
    Penultimate       102 MB
    etc......
    iCloud
    Total Storage     5.0 GB
    Available           5.0 GB
    etc......
I have deleted numerous apps and media on my iPad to make more room. I have read on other Apple Support threads that iDevices need space in order to move files around and such. I think 4.8 GB should be enough for this! Especially for an ibook that's only 2.46 GB large!!! This is really frustrating and I really need this ibook!!!! If someone could give me some other tips and tricks, that would be great. I really don't want to have to restore my iPad though... If it comes down to that, I guess I have no choice.
Another detail I left out is a popup window that comes up just before the error message that reads:
    Downloading Item
When this item is finished downloading, it will be available in your library.
    - OK
I'm not sure it's related to the issue, but I decided to put it out there anyway so that this problem can be as detailed as possible.
Thanks for all of the support!

I have the same problem.  I got an error when downloading an iBook to my iPad, and now it shows up as "gray" in my book list. I'm running iOS 7.1.1 with iBooks version 3.2.
Actually, you don't have the same problem at all. The OP had excessive "Other" taking up space, leaving no space to download additional books.
You seem to be having a problem with a specific file. If I were you, I'd start my own thread with a subject line that describes your issue. You're going to get better answers that way than by piggybacking on an old thread.
Yes, you should still be able to load iBooks by syncing with iTunes. There may be a problem with the file itself. Are you able to add other books? If so, contact the iTunes Store to see if they can help you with this particular book.
    Best of luck.

  • "Cannot Download - There is not enough available storage space."

When attempting to update apps, I receive an error message
"Cannot Download - There is not enough available storage space."
When I Go to settings, there is 10.6 GB available
    What is the deal?
    Thanks in advance

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • "There is not enough available storage to trim video."  But I have available 4.7G.

When trying to make a clip of a video I took on my iPad, I get the message, "Cannot Trim Video.  There is not enough available storage to trim video."  Yet I have available 4.7G.  Also, I successfully trimmed the video, then a few minutes later I decided I wanted to do a better job, so I deleted that clip I did not like, went back to original video and when I tried to do the trimming again, I'm getting the error message.  How can I fix this?

5GB is typically not enough space to download a movie.  Often, movies take from 3 - 5 GB to begin with.  The only option you have is to delete more things from your iPad.  You can remove unused Apps, pictures, music, text message (messages with pictures can take up a lot of space), email messages, books, magazines etc.

My phone keeps saying : CANNOT TAKE PHOTO .. There is not enough available storage to ate a photo .. Manage your storage in settings ... Errrrrrrrrr I'm so aggravated

The space you purchased is in iCloud. It is not on your phone, and there is no way you can use it directly on your phone. The phone comes with whatever memory you purchased it with (8, 16, 32 or 64 GB) and that number will never change. You can use iCloud memory for backups, for syncing your mail, contacts, calendars, notes and photos. You can also use it for storing non-iTunes music to stream back to the phone (iTunes music also, but the storage for that is free, and is not part of the storage you purchased)  and Documents and Data for apps that are iCloud enabled (such as Apple's Pages, Numbers and Keynote apps).
Apple gives you 90 days of free telephone support when you buy an iPhone or iPad. I guess they figure that 3 months is enough time to get your startup questions answered. You also had the option of buying AppleCare, which would have extended the 90 days free telephone support to 2 years.
You can still get free support from Apple by going to any Apple store, and from other users in this user-to-user support forum. And frequently user support is more useful than Apple's, because users don't have Apple's lawyers overseeing everything that is said by Apple employees.

  • IPad Mini Stays Storage Almost Full

My iPad mini keeps ghost filling my storage. In restarting it, my free space would come back. After it would continually do this, I restored my ipad to factory settings and reinstalled my apps. The problem has persisted. Anyone know why it would do this or how to fix the problem?

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

i cannot backup my iphone4s because no more storage is displayed when the storage statistics shows Total Storage 5GB and Available Storage 5GB - basically i haven't used any memory but i cannot backup! please help. i am only trying to back up my notes and contacts. that's it. and i don't think it will use up 5GB

On your iPhone, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage.  There you should be able to see how much of your used storage is allocated to different things (ex., iphone backup, ipad backup, mail).  From there you should be able to figure out what is going on.

I purchased extra cloud storage and it shows 51 GB available yet there's no room for anything. How do I allocate that available storage?

Whoa, it sounds like you're confusing two very different things.
iCloud initially comes allowing 5GB of free storage (for backups, etc.).
Your iPad (or are you talking about an iPhone in the wrong forum?) comes with some number of tens of gigabytes of storage, which cannot be added to.
So something doesn't make sense in your comment.

  • IPad Retina Mini storage stats sluggish..

I've had my Retina Mini for a couple of weeks now and it runs just fine but every time I want to see how much space is left on the ipad (it's only a 16gb so space is tight!), it takes between 40 seconds and a minute to tell me I have X mb/gb left!
In case you're not sure how to get this info, it's in Settings, General, Usage. The applist appears on the top right eventually.
On my wife's ipad 3, running the same 7.04, it takes about 2 seconds. Both of us have a nearly identical app list installed!
I've tried reseting, restoring but it doesn't make a difference at all. Has anyone had this problem?

    Hi maxgkx,
I understand you would like more information about storage capacity, and how it is reported. The following article provides helpful information on the topic:
How OS X and iOS report storage capacity - Apple Support
Understanding storage capacity in iPad, iPhone, iPod
When you view the storage capacity of your iPod, iPhone, iPad, or other electronic devices within its operating system, the capacity is reported using the the binary system (base 2) of measurement. In binary, 1 GB is calculated as 1,073,741,824 bytes.
For example: The way decimal and binary numeral systems measure a GB is what causes a 32 GB storage device to appear as approximately 28 GB when detailed by its operating system, even though the storage device still has 32 billion bytes (not 28 billion bytes), as reported.
You can see this difference if you look at how your computer summarizes the capacity of your iPod, iPad, or iPhone’s storage when the device is connected to your computer. You will also see this difference in the About menu on your iPod, iPad, or iPhone. The important point to understand is that the available storage capacity is the same no matter which system (decimal or binary) is used. Nothing is missing.
The storage media in your Apple product, like all storage devices, uses some of its capacity for formatting, so actual capacity available for applications and files will be less. In addition, other factors, such as pre-installed systems or other software and media, will also use part of the available storage capacity.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Bobby_D

  • No available storage

    I have a 16GB iPad Mini with OS 7.1.2
I recently filmed a lot of videos, until I couldn't film any more, due to having no more memory available.
i then copied the videos to another computer and deleted them all from my iPad, but I still keep getting the message "no available storage - go to settings etc." so, I go to settings, and, apart from telling me that the available storage is still zero, my only option seems to be to delete apps, which I did NOT need to do before I filmed the videos.
SO, I now have a virtually unusable iPad, when I should have got back several gigs of memory.
Please can someone tell me how to free up the memory? It's as if I need to empty Trash, but I gather that there isn't one.
    Thanks,
    Roger.

    You should try:
    Rebooting your iDevice
Hold down the Sleep (On-Off) and Home buttons together for about 10-15 seconds or until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears - then let go of the buttons. The iPad should begin to start up.

iPod touch 4 gives message "Cannot Download" "there is not enough available storage to download...You can manage your storage in settings." when trying to update or install one of the apps, but not other apps.  I have more space available than needed for the app.  What do I need to do to fix this problem?  Do I need to completely reset this device as new and, if so, how should I do that?

You need to delete some item (apps, music, photos etc) from the iPod,.However, sometime files get corrupt. To determine that connect the iPod to your computer and click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes. How much storage is used by the "other" category. If over 1 1/2 GB that indicates corrupted files.
To get the "other" down to normal value you need to restore your iPod usually restoring from backup works but sometimes restoring to factory settings.new iPod is required./
