Ipad screen blank, itunes says in recovery mode (no serial number), will not restore

iPad 4th gen will not restore. Screen stays blank no matter what. iTunes recognizes device, does not recognize serial information. Restore fails.

FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
1. Turn off iPad
2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
5. Release Home button.
ON COMPUTER
6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
7. Select "Restore iPad"...
Note:
1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.

I bought Demi Lovato - "Unbroken" along with multiple other music purchases but this is the only album that does not show up in my purchased area or has the feature of re-downloading when i search it into iTunes. I have a new laptop and even on my old laptop which i purchased it on, it is not re-downloadable or even re-purchasable. I am using the exactly the same iTunes iD. It is in my itunes on my old laptop but I can't download or purchase it again onto my new laptop eventhough it says it has already been purchased but it doesn't show up in my purchased area. If Mavericks works on your model, then so will Yosemite. Frankly, though, for a computer that age I would stick with Snow Leopard. Try a different dock connector (or no dock).

then it goes into software update
at the end of the software update it says "Itunes has detected an iphone in recovery mode...."
All this time, the screen of the iphone stays on with USB to Itunes
I might add that while the phone was in it's first attempt at recovery mode, it was accidentally unplugged.

AT this point whatever data you have on yoru phone is already gone since it is in recovery mode.
However you can restore from your backup, when your phone reboots from recovery.
YOu do have a backup right?

Is Find My Phone turned on, on your phone? If so, eject from iTunes, login to iCloud.com, locate your phone, then erase it.
Does the same thing...removes the passcode. Then, either restore from backup, or setup as a new device.

Try a Reboot press & hold menu button & power button hold both down until you see Apple Logo you will not lose any data. But you may need to do this more than once. I never use PCs for software upgrades or downloads I always use wifi had no problems with iOS 8.1 B sydd

I have tried to restore my contacts and company data at least 20 times and every time half way through THE iPAD REBOOTS! When it boots back up it is at the brand new iPad screen.
This makes me angry as I do not use the iPad for fun and games. I use it for business. My company data and records for the last year are gone. ALL of my out standing customer invoices are gone. ALL payments received are gone! ALL Business contacts and emails ARE GONE! All my company, personal email accounts and settings ARE GONE!

Yes! I have done everything. Rebooted computer, checked for updates, Hard booted iPad, Factory restored iPad to ios 5 twice, tried every usb port I have, unplugged all other usb components.
Everytime half way through "Restoring iPad from backup..." The iPad turns off shows a spinning circle then shows the Apple logo and takes me to the brand new iPad setup screen.
Apple, you have no idea the level of stress you have created today.....

Check the console app to see if there are any error messages. I had one app showing an issue (Pet Hotel) the error was (truncated):

I manually snyc'ed that particular app and then re-ran the restore and am now the proud owner of a working iphone. Not sure it is the same problem or app but looking in the console was the key!
