IPad screen cracked twice in 3 weeks - best option?

My 13 year-old son is usually very responsible with his electronics, but he has managed to crack his iPad 2 screen twice in three weeks (one accidental drop, one friend sitting on it). The first time he paid a third party vendor $150 to repair it. They did a very good job and it looked good as new. Now I'm debating what to do this time (short of confiscating it forever). In your opinion, should we:
1) Have him pay the same third party vendor to repair it again? He's trying to save for a laptop and this is making quite a dent in his savings.
2) Just buy a really good screen protector and hope for the best? Will that prevent it from getting worse? What brand do you recommend?
3) Throw ourselves on the mercy of the nearest Apple genius? I understand third party repair work will void the warranty (It will be a year old in December). Would that also prevent them from taking pity on us and offering a replacement? I understand there's no guarantee of a replacement, and that it all depends on the person and/or the store, the situation, etc. Is it even worth a shot?
The poor kid is so angry with himself, I hardly have the heart to throw a fit about this. He's already punished himself enough.

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Ipad 2 crashed twice in a week.ios7,hard reboot

original ipad 2 has crashed twice in the last week or so.Using ios7.03..Do not know what my wife,was using at the time,but it needed a hard reboot to start.

This is Apple's response to that particular error code.

Z3 compact screen cracked after just 2 weeks

After having I phones I decided to convert to the Z3 compact due to its perceived robustness. I am sorry to report that after just 2 weeks a crack has developed across the front screen rendering the touch screen useless. This was after a minor drop. I dropped my I phones regularly without any damage. I am now faced with a hefty repair bill as yet unknown as it has to be returned to Sony for asessment. A very disgruntled customer!!!

Bunk. If it was quite common that iPad screens crack all by themselves, there would threads a mile long on this and there simply aren't.
To the OP: You can take your iPad to the Apple Store, but they are likely going to only offer you an out of warranty replacement option (replacing the iPad for about 50% of the purchase price) as accidental damage is not covered under warranty. And there's no way to prove you didn't accidentaly drop your iPad.

I assume that you will have to set up as new since it will not let you restore from the backup. Then after you set it up, you can restore from the iCloud backup. The backup should not disappear be use you are setting this device up as new. Your backup should still be in iCloud.
However, after you activate the iPd and update the software, you will have to erase the device in order to restore from the Cloud backup, that is the only way to get to the iCloud backup.

About a few weeks ago my iPad 2 screen cracked. I don't know how it happened, but we think that someone might have stepped on it. It wasn't bad at all, but then it spread. One small crack across the middle & top, with a large "spider web" crack on the right side. So I was wondering if there is a way to get the screen fixed from Apple. Right now, buying another iPad isn't really the best option.

I don't know what country that you are in, but in the US the price for repair (i.e. replacement) is for the iPad 2 (from here) $249, and here in the UK £206.44 . If you select your country at the top of that page you might be able to find the price for your country and your service options.
