IPad shows a red iTunes icon with picture of lightning connection on start up. Doesn't look authentic. Could it be a virus?
i Started my iPad this afternoon and it shows a red iTunes icon in the centre of the screen with a picture of a lightning connection below it. It doesn't look authentic. I don't want to plug it into my Mac unless I know it's safe. Any suggestions?
Something like my screenshot ? If so you're in Recovery mode and need to restore from your iTunes or iCloud backup.

I reset all the settings last night, now I cant get any icons up, plus I'm on a local computer that cant download itunes, anyone know how i can get my screen back to normal? All it shows is the itunes sybol with the usb cord connecting to it.
Your only option at this point is to connect the device to a computer running iTunes so you can restore it.

I just bought a Ipad and know nothing about it. I have been charging it for about 2 hours and when I try to turn it on it shows the Itune icon and the plug thats it wont do anything else. Any suggestions on what to do?
iPads are devices and not PCs, so it needs a functioning relationship with a PC to work.
Download iTunes onto your PC, then connect your iPad to that PC. That should get you started. -

You need to plug the iPad into your computer that has iTunes installed on it, and activate it.
The User Guide would be good for you to read:

I was upgrading my iOS last night but when I checked to see the progress ,the home page refused to show. After d apple icon comes on the screen immediately changes to show the iTunes icon with a charging port cable. What should I do?
That means that you have to connect your iPad to your computer and you need to use iTunes to restore the iOS. Software. Read this for the instructions.

"Same thing just happened to me. There was a software update available, it installed the update and then died with that visual on the screen. Reset doesn't work and it won't even show up in iTunes to try and do anything with it. I think they just bricked it on me."

ipad2 is frozen when downloading upgrade ios7. screen shows ipad cord directing to itunes icon.
That implies that your iPad has gone into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
You will need to connect it to your computer's iTunes (you will need an up-to-date version of iTunes on your computer), and you should then be able to reset your iPad and restore/resync your content to it -
I am trying to update to ios 8 but after downloading a message is come up on the screen when trying to reboot. here is the message. an itune icon with itunes written under the icon then a charger sighn pointing an arrow towards the itune icon it will not reboot
That image means that it's gone into recovery mode - you will need to connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes (you will need the current version of iTunes installed on your computer)and you should be able to use that to reset your iPad back to factory defaults, you can then restore/resync your content to it.
