IPad slow despite closing all Apps and rebooting.

Original iPad 64GB 3G running iOS 5.0.1 is noticeably slow. Even after closing all Apps and rebooting, my machine runs slow. I tried draining the battery and still no improvement. Am I to conclude that iOS 5 combined with regularly updating my Apps rendered the processor obsolete?

As the result of months of web surfing and testing, I could narrow down the issue at is causing performance on all our original iPads! One would say to turn all the iCloud features off, but I have found that there are major performance bugs in contacts and calendars! Turn them off in the iCloud part if the settings. This, alone with disabling spotlight search results in no keyboard lag and no "checkerboard effect" in safari whe pages won't load fast enough! I hope this helps everyone as it did to me!

  • After opening an email of photos from my mom, the email app won't open. I've rebooted the iPad, I've closed the app and reopeneded it. When I open it I get the basic frame (reply button, delete, etc) but none of my accts show up.

When I first opened the email, it took forever to open. Then the pics didn't show up as pics, but as a ton of some kind of code. Since then, the app will open with just the frame, no info in the frame, no email accts or anything. Then it closes automatically after a few seconds.
I've closed the app and reopened it, rebooted the iPad, and gone online and deleted the email itself. But the app still won't open. Help, please!!

Thank you. I tried the soft reboot again, and the home button has been working fine this whole time. I have tried deleting the email acct from the settings and the mail app still opens only empty frames. I have a screen shot of it, but don't know how to post it here to be able to show what exactly is happening.
The mail app will open. I can see the area that usually shows the messages themselves. I can also see the area that usually displays all the accts. Both these areas are completely blank. The search bar is showing on the left hand side, and up on the top right, the download button, reply, delete and compose buttons are showing. At the very bottom left the refresh button is showing. The app sits like that for about 20 seconds and then automatically closes. None of the buttons are responsive. I cannot see any of the email accounts I have in the app (3, usually but 2 at the moment since deleting the acct that seemed to have caused this problem).
I have force-stopped the app, shut down and restarted the iPad, and rebooted the iPad. None of these have helped.

  • My Safari app wont open a new tab and crashes if I try, I've tried closing all apps and reopening. Its a new ipad air and only started doing this after I synched with itunes.

    Hi,
I have a new iPad Air. Since I synched it with my itunes account - all my details have been uploaded which is great but Safari will only work with one page open. If I try to open a new Tab it crashes. I have tried turning it off and on again. I tried closing all my apps that were open - including Safari and opening it again. Not sure what else to try.

    1. Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data
    2. Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home button down for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple Logo

  • Trying to do app updates on my mums mini ipad its registered to her email but keeps coming up to sign in with my email which i use on my ipad i have deleted all apps and started again buy downloading them on her email but its still doing it on my email

my mums ipad mini i need to do app udates on it but its keeps coming up with it to sign in with my apple id iv deleted all the apps of her ipad and signed in with her apple id but its still asking for my id to download the apps with what can i do to get it to go to her id to do the updates thanks

    Hi neique,
When you update apps, you will be asked for the password that belongs to whatever Apple ID purchased those apps. They will forever be linked to the Apple ID that they were purchased under, so regardless of where they are loaded, or what Apple ID is signed onto the device that they are loaded on, when you try to update, it is going to ask for the "owners" password.
    Cheers,

MY screen continually freezes up. I've tried closing all apps that are open and have held down the home button and start button simultaneously but neither helped. Can someone out there help me?

Well the next couple of things to try would be to reset all settings, and if that doesn't help, it's probably time to restore the iOS software.
Settings>General>Reset>Reset all settings. That will take all settings on the iPad back to factory defaults. It will not delete anything and you will not lose any data, but you will have to enter all settings again ...WiFi passwords, enable Siri, select your wallpaper, adjust brightness, turn on location services and set privacy settings, etc, etc.
You can read about restoring the software here.
iTunes: Restoring iOS software - Support - Apple
Should you decide to restore the iOS, it is extremely important that you back up first so that you can restore from the backup and then sync with iTunes afterward in order to restore all content back to the iPad. It is all covered in the kb article.
If you do not sync with iTunes, then I assume that you backup with iCloud. In that case you can erase the device in Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings. Once again, backing up with I loud is I,operative before you do this so that you can restore from the iCloud backup after you erase the iPad and start over again with activation.
You should read this first before you restore from either backup.

Hi.. My internet and wifi are working on samsung phone and hp laptop but its not getting connected to iphone ipad, only skype is coming online rest all apps and safari show no internet connection. Got new linksys router WRT160NL , but situation same. Tried reboot, renew lease, forget network, reset network setting. Pls advice

Have you tried a simple reset of your iPod to see if that helps?  To do this, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Otherwise, have you tried any of the troubleshooting mentioned in this Apple support document?

It's very likely that your boot drive is failing. Back up all data immediately and schedule a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • IOS 5: iPad1 crashes in virtually all apps and is  slow

After installing iOS5, I noticed that my iPad1 64 3G crashes in 95% of the apps installed, even the native Apple apps like Address Book, Twitter, Agenda and Safari. But also in Angry Birds, Google Earth and several other apps.
Also starting Agenda is really slow: between starting the app and a new entry can be entered, the iPad seems to wait for 15 seconds or more. Then entering the date and time and trying to save the entry also takes three times the time it did before the 'upgrade' to iOS5. The same with the Adress Book. It seems that these apps can't do anything before connecting to iCloud or getting an ok from it. Apparently it does not buffer data.
restrating the iPad sveral times made things a little better, but on the whole it is unstable and slow compared to iOS4xx.
Upgrading to iOS 5.01 helped: waiting times are ca 50% less, crashes appear only in 20% of the cases.
Who knows what causes these symptoms and what to do about it?

If you called Apple Care the techs would have you try a reset first. Press & hold the Power and Home buttons together for 10+ seconds, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo. It is safe to do, there should be no content loss. It is the same as rebooting your computer.
If that was not the solution the next step would be to restore the iOS device to its factory settings.

  • My IPad will not turn on, despite charging all night and all day. The Apple pops up then goes away. What is wrong and how can I fix it?

My IPad will not turn on despite charging all night and all day.  The Apple pops on but then shuts off again.  It does this over and over. How can I fix this and get it up and running again?

    Hey bellabeanbag,
Thanks for the question. The following resource outlines troubleshooting steps if your iPad is not responding:
    iPad: Basic troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3274
If iPad won't turn on, or the display stops responding
Follow these steps, testing after each:
    1. Turn the iPad off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPad for a few seconds, until a red slider appears. Then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    2. Reset iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If iPad still won't respond after you restore it
Follow these steps, testing after each:
    1. If you receive an alert in iTunes while restoring your iPad, refer to this article for instructions on how to resolve common issues with updating and restoring.
    2. If you cannot restore your iPad in iTunes, or if iTunes does not recognize the device, refer to this article for instructions on restoring using recovery mode.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • I have the original IPad and it keeps shutting down in all apps and programs.

I have the original IPad and it keeps shutting down in all apps and programs.  Does anyone have a solution for this problem.

First and periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The iPad 1only has 256 MB of memory.
    Next
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

the apps will not be deleted if the itunes is authorised for the apple id from which you downloaded the apps.
for the songs if you have downloaded it from a store other than itunes an app "TuneAid" will help you. download the full version then you can copy all the songs on the ipad to ur itunes library

Upgrading the OS does not remove your apps and purchases.

  • IPad keeps crashing on all apps...safari, games, weather

iPad keeps crashing on all apps,,safari, games, weather,. After opening something about a minute it crashes. Very frustrating. Anyone with the same problem?

Well, what Nick wrote won't solve the issue. In fact, nowhere in the Apple discussion forums would you find the right answer; and I can guarantee, no Apple rep will be able to tell you what the issue is. Except me of course. Now that the self-boast is over, here's how to solve the problem once and for all (guaranteed zero crashes post this).
The basic crashing problem occurs because iPad 2 has an operating system that unfortunately opens up all apps automatically (unless instructed not to) and keeps them on the standby mode. This, combined with the fact that the iPad 2 does not have unlimited RAM (and neither does it have an intelligent process to use the hard disk when the RAM runs out), would lead to almost all iPad 2 units to crash, but only when users have loaded more number of apps than the RAM can handle.
There are three methods to resolve this issue for users (for developers and Apple tech personnel, the solutions are given later; you can contact me for the ex gratia OS source code updation to resolve this issue in case you wish):
SOLUTIONS FOR NEW USERS (warning: experienced users may find these instructions drawling out):
    1. The first method involves five concurrent steps, which I'll describe as 1a to 1e. Of course, this can be done in a shorter way, but I guess for people not conversant with shortcuts, this is better.
1a: Go to Settings > General > and switch on the "Multi tasking gestures" tab.
1b. Go to the home screen (by clicking on the Home Screen button on the iPad screen) and swipe four fingers from the bottom of the screen upwards. Do this once or twice and you'll suddenly see a new bench pop up below that contains many applications. These are the applications that are running on a stand by mode and eating up your RAM. Optimally, all of these should have been shut and only those which are being used by you should have been open. Anyway, move to 1c.
1c. On any of the app icons that you see on this new bench, keep a finger for a few seconds. Now lift your finger. You'll see all icons on the new bench start shaking - and they will additionally have a "-" sign too on their left. Click on this "-" sign and close all applications on the new bottom bench. Return to the Home Screen (click on the button on the iPad screen).
1d. The apps on the Home Screen are allocated the maximum RAM by the new OS. So, shift all downloaded apps away from the home screen into the subsequent pages. In other words, leave only the original Apple supplied apps (like Settings, Safari etc) on the main first page of the Home Screen. How does one shift other apps to subseqent pages? On any of the apps on the main Home Screen, keep a finger for a few seconds. Lift it the finger for god's sake :) Again, all icons will start shaking and will get a "x" sign on their top. DO NOT touch that "x" sign, which of course, is for deleting the app altogether. Rather, on any one of the non-original Apple apps that are present on the Home Screen, just  place your finger and without lifting the finger, slide the app to the top right corner of the screen and keep it there. You'll notice that the app suddenly gets shifted into the next page. Return to the Home Screen; repeat the process till "all" non original apps are shifted out.
1e. You can starrt working in peace right from this moment onwards without the ipad crashing. Just keep checking from time to time, how many apps are on standby (swipe four fingers upwards at any time on the iPad) and ensure that those that you are not using are closed.
1e rejoinder: Impotant instruction: NEVER work on your iPad2 while it is being recharged. The RAM gets screwed as in some iPads, there is no protective interface provided to insulate the CPU from the electrical currents. In fact, switch off your iPad while it is being recharged.
    SOLUTIONS FOR APPLE STAFF:
    1. Diret users to this thread.
    2. Offer users an upgraded RAM.
    3. Provide a protective interface to the CPU and RAM boxes from the electric charge.
    4. Recode the new OS (no need to copy what Vista does; just advise the OS to use the hard disk intelligently when app uage exceeds RAM; or do what Blackberry does - advice the users through a warning message to close down extra apps)
There you all go. (pardon the spelling mistakes; this was entered through a speech recognition sw)
