IPad storage capacity for photo storage

'm planning to order the new iPad2 and would appreciate input on the value of the additional storage. I'd like to use the iPad to download photos while I'm traveling. I currently have a 18 megapixel camera and use 8gb sd cards and would appreciate know how to calculate how many photo's can be stored on the iPad with the 16, 32, and 64 gb models.
Thanks in advance

By my tests of iPad1 I do not believe the iPad can show the full resolution of photographs beyond about 2 or 3 megapixel because there is not enough video memory. If you open an 18 megapixel picture you will not be able to zoom by your fingers to see the 100% crop version of your pictures. Zooming in will cause them to pixellate, unlike zooming in on your desktop or laptop. Thus, you may want to create a reduced resolution collection of versions of your photos for iPad and store those on your device, unless you think you will be emailing them to folks from the iPad. This will allow you to put many more pictures on your iPad because you will not be using memory space that you can not see by zooming, anyway.

I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?  Both computers have OS X10.9.3.  Currently they are connected by a Firewire 800 cable.

You certainly could keep the old Mac Pro in Firewire mode (hold down the T key on its keyboard as you boot) to show its drives on the new MP. This is basically as fast as putting the drives into a Firewire enclosure.
Or you could boot it normally and share its files over the network using the Sharing panel of System Preferences. If you turn on both File and Screen Sharing, you don't even need to have a monitor attached - you can do all administration using screen sharing. However, this method requires that you open all files over the network, which will be slower than the direct-connect method above, and may also not work with all applications.

  • Am I correct, if I presume that Photo stream IS the iCloud storage device for photos?

Is Photo-stream the iCloud storage device for photos?

Photo Stream is a photo sync service between your computers and devices. That's not designed as a storage service, because photos uploaded to Photo Stream are deleted 30 days after adding them to it. I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • Getting a NAS for photo storage but want to run Time Machine to separate drive

My late 2009 iMac is getting dangerously full but, as a photographer, I need quick and easy access to my files. I am planning on getting a NAS setup for photo storage, setting up two drives, with RAID 1 as a backup, in case of a hard drive failure.
Once I have moved all my files to the NAS, I want to use Time Machine to backup my system to an attached external hardrive (as I have always done), and use the NAS separately, for storage, file sharing and remote backup when I am travelling.
After some research, I am looking at the Synology DS413j or the QNAP TS420.
I need reliability, compatability and ease of use, and don't want to spend £400-£500 without being sure that I'm not opening a can of worms.
Does anyone have any experience with either of these?
    Thanks

well thought out chain of logic on your setup and best choice on the Synology.
As for reliability, Synology is just a fancy box, ...the most reliable from many perspectives,...however the actual HD contained therein can only be one of 4 diff. mfg.(hitachi, toshiba, Seagate or WD)
    http://www.amazon.com/Synology-DiskStation-Diskless-Network-Attached/dp/B008U69L C4
Do not consider, as recommendation, any WD Green drives, rather WD red, or, best: black grade drives (best and highest rated in quality).
Ultimately with much HD experience, everything boils down to data REDUNDANCY, and the very best of HD, as much testing by others proves, will fail invariably.
Ideally youre leaving out a final important link in your data protection, a final redundancy NON-RAID , not attached copy of all this data frequently updated and not left attached for protection.
Methodology to protect your data. Backups vs. Archives. Long-term data protection
Secondary data on a single external HD or RAID array is not a redundancy, but a PRIMARY data copy.    First Redundancy takes place on a Secondary storage medium/locus. (both of these external of course)
2nd level protection in any redundancy necessitates it "be unconnected"
Data ON the actual computer is not considered, ergo a single copy OFF a computer is just that, a backup / copy.  Redunancy begins as secondary to a FIRST COPY

  • Best storage capacity for a student

    Greetings everyone,
I have the desire of buying the latest iPad in a near future and I was wondering, what storage capacity will I be needing?
-I intend to record many classes at university
-I intend to take pictures of the boards at university
-I intend to use it to store documents, books, dictionaries.
-I might get a good lot of apps and a few games(but not much)
-I do not listen to a lot of music(100 tracks max, really)
-I would like to have a few movies at hands(I also am subscribed to Netflix)
Wich would be the best for me? 16, 32, 64 or 128G?
Meanwhile, I'd appreciate if someone could give me a hint of how much space recording parts of my classes might take.
    +
If someone was kind enough to explain to me ''***'' is 3G and Cellular?I have no idea what it could be.
    Much appreciated,
    Agesilas

I'm happy that Demo solved your question. I had read it and waited until my younger son got home to ask him a few questions. I figure the more opinions you have, the better. And Demo has the right idea that you should buy your ipad with the most storage you can afford. That tends to be the general concensus in responses to this question.
Our son got his ipad 2 64 gb before as he started his junior year in college this past year. At first, he quickly loaded it with music, a few movies, tv shows, apps, etc. It came to over 22 gbs. After his junior year he has used over 50 gb. He said the books do not take up much space, but the tv shows do and if he needs to, he can delete them. So it can add up fast. You want to record (video and audio?) it adds up. It will add up more quickly than simply taking photos. You might have to buy newspapers (or be given for free through your university) and they add up if not deleted periodically. Engineering projects take up space. Others might say you don't need to go too big because you can store things in the cloud. (We haven't done that here, so no opinion to offer.)
Like Demo, our son has no idea about recording, but as Demo said,it will add up. Movies eat up the battery more quickly, so that might be an indication that your recordings will take up more space.
So we suggest you consider the 64gb, and if you can easily afford it, and want to, consider the128 gb. (Personally, for me, the more it costs, the more I'd worry about it.)
And FYI, at least in the USA, most colleges have wifi throughout campus, so you might not need it too often on campus. But if you can afford it, the cellular will ensure constant connectivity to the internet anywhere! And because you aren't too familiar with cellular, depending on where you live and go to school, you will pick a carrier (often the carrier for your cell phone.) And when you are out of wifi range, your phone carrier will charge you, so you might want to do some comparison shopping.
It's great that you have Netflix.
Oh. Please be sure to buy a good strong case for your ipad.
Reseach independent reviews (esp. re storgage given the price,) and don't hurry to make a decision until you're sure.
Whatever you decide, enjoy your ipad and your years at university!

  • Storage space for photos

I want to buy either a 64 0r 32gb Ipad to take with me on holidays. I shoot my pictures in RAW format. If I used this the Ipad to down load my pictures for storage how many can be stored? I will have minimal apps on the device.

The iPad is not a very good device for storage of photos. When photos are imported to the iPad, they are "optimized" for viewing on the iPad, so you may lose some of the resolution. Also it's not easy to export or delete the photos from the iPad. Also when photos are imported, the photo file name does not appear on the iPad display.
    Another option:

  • Suggestion for a new macbookair flash storage capacity for dual OS

I'm planning to buy my first MBA. I'll work using logic pro and office for mac. But I also have one app that need run on win7. This app size is max 200mb.
To keep my final working file, I plan to buy external storage.
My question, looking at my work needs, pls advise what is the ideal flash storage size I should pick ? Is it 128, 256 or 512Gb ? Ideal for me means, not overcapacity flash storage.
    Tx all

    Hi Dikanug,
Out of interest, so I can further select the best capacity of Flash Storage, how many document do you plan to save on the computer using Office and how often are you going to use Logic Pro?
This will help determine the best capacity.
Obviously the Logic Pro files will need to stay on the Mac however it is probably cheeper to have a Small Flash Storage and store any file that does not need to be on the actually Macintosh Drive, stored on a large external Hard Drive with files such as Office files.
Obviously the Logic Pro files will be anywhere from 10mb -up and therefore this will be needed to be taken into consideration when purchasing the Flash.
Just for your sake: 14 tracks of audio, 10 of which are drums and a song that is about 5 minutes long, could be at least 25mb in file capacity.
Remember once you have bought the device you cannot make the capacity bigger and thereofre it is better to have more than not enough however do not waste your money if you do not need it.

I upgraded my Icloud storage capacity to a higher tier and my Iphone does not reflect the change although my credit card was charged and the device is nor properly backup. How can this be resolved?

It seems to take up to a couple of days for the upgrade to take hold, at least that's the experience of some users.  Give it 24 hours before contacting apple.

  • How to increase storage capacity for STAT logs

    Hi all ,
We are taking logs using the command STAT for observing users activities.(Here we can find the users activities only for 3 days).
    1. I want to store one month period STAT logs ? how can and where can I change the memory settings to change the storage capacity?
(like to increase system log size we can edit rslg/store----- parameter. Like this way where can I change the settings to store one month period STAT logs)
    Please kindly help on this.
    Regards,
    nani

    I don´t think it´s possible.
Storing everything for one month will, depending on user activity, produce a HUGE amount of data you won´t be able to evaluate, just because of its size.
What do you want to achieve with that?

  • Storage Bin for Interim Storage Type 902 for GR

    Hi,
We know that the the dynamic storage bin for goods receipt for PO is the PO number. However, when we are posting GR, system creates TR with interim storage bin as material document number.
I looked into the movement type config. However, we can only state that whether interim bin should be cordinates or fixed bin or dynamic bin. It has no way to mention what that dynamic bin would be.
Can you please suggest a way to change the dynamic storage bin as PO number instead of material document number.
    Thanks,
    Shekhar

    Dear Shekhar,
Could you please check in view V_T308 (transaction code OMNF) whether the indicator "Dynamic bin material document" is set for your warehouse number and requirement type B?
    Best regards,

  • Using other storage media for photos

PSA Starter Edition 3.2 has a dialog box to facilitate storing photos on CDs, thereby freeing up hard drive space on my computer. However, I have LOTS of photos. I wonder about using flash drives instead - each one can hold so much more. I can't find anything in PSA SE 3.2 to guide me in doing this. I know I can copy the files from Windows Explorer onto a flash drive, but that doesn't free up the hard drive space. I can copy to the flash drive and then delete the photos from the hard drive, but then the thumbprints will disappear that remind me of the photos' existence, preserve the tags, and tell me which CD to go fetch if I want to do something with the photos.
I also wonder which will last better as long-term storage: CDs or flash drives.
Does anybody have and experience with storing large numbers of photos? CDs? Flash drives? Other media?
By the way, I actually like the way PSA makes it easy to find, sort, and label photos. I find that its simple editing tools are all that's needed most of the time, and the photos are easily imported into PS Elements for more complex editing when needed - although then the file extension changes and PSA can't find the edited photo any more! Oh well, nothing's perfect.
I hope someone out there has experience with long-term storage of large numbers of photos.
    Sarah

    Hey Sarah,
You can move your pictures to the flash drive through explorer and then reconnect your thumbnails in Photoshop Album Starter Edition to the images through File>Reconnect>Browse and mentioning the flash drive path for few pics.
Afterwards you can let the images get reconnected automatically as it will now take place faster once the application has located the path. Ensure that all the images have been reconnected and then remove the flash drive from your USB port. I think that your files will be shown as offline files indicated by an icon that looks like a CD at the corner of each image.
Hope that you find this information handy.
    Cheers,
    Chhaya

  • CD storage capacity: For burning my songs

I am getting messages that I lack sufficient memory to execute any Saving actions. I moved all of my songs from my iMac hard drive to my LaCie external hard drive, but now I am considering putting them onto CDs for playing music away from my iMac.
Regarding CDs, I see that they are fairly inexpensive per disk now, but how much memory can be had on a CD? I see Memorex CDs at Home Depot -- 80 MB. Is that standard? What storage capacities are available to get?
    Thank you.
    Lorna in Southern California

    Lorna,
I'm not sure how you have things set up over there
with your external hard drive and what not, but once
you put a song into iTunes, it tends to stay there
unless you have deleted it yourself.
Anyways, once you have your songs in iTunes, I would
make a new playlist, drag all the songs that you want
on the CD into the playlist, then making sure that
the playlist is highlighted...click on the "Burn"
button in the top right hand corner of the iTunes
window. That should do it. It should prompt you to
insert a blank disc and everything else.
Here is an Apple technote on the process...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301917
James, thank you so much. I went there, read and bookmarked it and was glad that you explained about the .mp3 being for computer and the .aiff being for playing elsewhere, because I did not see any mention of that in the instructions on that instructional page. There is a choice that they offer, but no explanation which would guide one to making the right choice for what one wants, so THANKS thanks! James, tú eres un tesoso.

  • Expanding storage capacity for two Macs with external HD?

I have a G5 and a MacBook. I want a Time Capsule to help me be better about backing upp my MacBook. I'm trying to decide which size to buy. Money is an issue. I have a 1 TB Western Digital My Book Studio edition which I currently use as a backup disk. I use TM, and SuperDuper! for bootable backups (even though the MBSE doesn't do bootable on pre-Intel Macs, unfortunately).
I don't really understand the function of the USB connection on the TC, can someone explain that? Why is it there? What is it ment for? Will it work well to do this:
I've read discussions here and understand that it can't be used to extend the TCs storage size, a connected HD is instead treated as a separate disk. But I haven't found a thread that directly answers the question of if it is a viable solution (as for exemple a way of saving money if you already own a large HD) to use Time Machine to back up one computer with a wired connection to the the HD attached to the TC, and to use TM on another computer to back it up wirelessly to the TC itself.
I can see one obvious disadvantage to this is that if one disk fills up, backups for that computer can't continue over to the other. But other than that, is it possible to do this and is there any other disadvantage?
I've read many threads where people ask about backing up an external HD attached to a TC, but that's not what I'm interested in.
    Sincerely

    On each computer:
Open iTunes. Select Preferences from the iTunes menu and click on the Advanced icon in the toolbar. At the top you will see a box showing the path to your iTunes library. Click on the Change button, navigate to the location for the library on your external drive, select it and click on the Open button. Note this permanently changes the library's location on that computer. That means you cannot access your music unless the external drive is connected.
If you don't want a permanent change, then press the OPTION key and hold it down while you launch iTunes. iTunes will then prompt you to select the library you wish to open for that session.

  • Partition external hard drive for photo storage

My iMac from 2006 is down to 16 gb of free space (out of 500). I have two 1 TB drives from Seagate and made full backups via Time Machine. The first drive is now unplugged and am considering locating outside of my home in case of fire, theft, etc. The second drive is connected via USB constantly synching with TM. Curious about partitioning as I would like to divide the 1 TB external drive in half. The first 500 GB would be dedicated to TM backup and the other 500 GB would be for picture galleries I want quick access to then delete the rest on my internal drive.
My goals are two fold: 1.) Backup data, 2.) Free up space on my internal HD so the iMac and Lion will run faster.
Question: Do I need to format the drive and start over outside TM then go to Disk Utility and partion in half? If I'm right so far would I then open TM to backup to the first partition? Ultimately I want to manage storage balances between my internal drive and external device. Since the internal is filled up I want to spill data into the external drive.

I'm not really sure I understand what you mean, but it's OK as long as you understand that you can't back up a drive to itself. You should also know that one backup is not enough to be safe.
As for your original question, you can usually add a partition to a drive without erasing it. Follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under the heading "Create new partitions on a disk":
Disk Utility 12.x: Partition a disk
Obviously the backup volume must be at least large enough to hold one copy of all the data you want to back up to it, plus about 10% of padding required by Time Machine. How much larger it needs to be depends on the rate of data turnover, and on how far back you want the snapshot history to go. There are no valid "rules of thumb" that apply to all cases.
