IPad sucking up cell data at an alarming rate

Hello,
This issue has been driving me crazy for about six months now, I could really use some help in nailing this down.
It appeared to start last Fall, around October. I started to notice that my iPad's cellular usage had increased dramatically. I had been buying 1GB at a time, and it had been lasting me 10-12 weeks. Now it seemed I’d go thru 1GB in two weeks. Generally speaking, the balance of my iPad use between “on WiFi’ and “on cellular” hadn’t changed. The only things systemically that had changed was I had become active on Twitter and Google+, and iOS 8 had been released.
The first thing I did was shut off cellular usage for Twitter and Google+, but that didn’t make a difference. Indeed, as I studied the problem (it was hard to ignore), I noticed that frequently, while doing nothing with my iPad, it just sitting in my bag with the cover closed as I drove from one place to another, I’d use up 10-15MB in 20 minutes.
When I looked at the cellular usage statistics in Settings, “Documents and Sync” (which could be more vague, but it would take some effort) seemed to be where the biggest usage was. I spoke with an Apple Store Genius, and while she couldn’t find a specific culprit, she recommended I reset my iPad and then restore from a backup. That seemed to help, in that I went thru 1GB in a month rather than two weeks; but I still got that weird effect where I would use up a huge chunk doing nothing. I started turning off cellular usage for anything for which it wasn’t essential, did the same for location services, background app refresh, and shut off Find My iPad. Not a noticeable change.
About a month ago, I bought a new iPad Air 2 (I was gonna do that anyway). I was really hoping it was some hardware thing on my old iPad, and the new one would be OK. I built the Air 2 up as new (i.e., not from the backup of the old one), even gave it a new, unique name. But I still find it using dozens of MB doing nothing when I spend any time away from WiFi.
But not always, and that’s the inconsistent, hardest to understand part. A good example was yesterday. I had an errand to run that involved making the same 25-minutes-in-each-direction drive, once in the morning and again in the afternoon. In the morning, I used my iPad to listen to a radio station stream. When I got home, I had used up about 8MB (that actually seemed low, to be honest). When I did the second trip in the afternoon, I took my iPad, but it was in my bag, with the cover on, the whole way. When I got home I’d used up 50MB.
The thing that’s kinda bugging me in the back of my mind is that he only things consistent through all the various attempted solutions and iPads, are iOS 8 and my iCloud account. I can’t help feeling something syncing to iCloud (or some other iOS 8 thing) is the cause of all the extra usage. (At one point, I thought Safari was responsible; I notice that the spinning gear in the status line seems on whenever Safari is active, even after the page I'm viewing apparently completes loading. I shut off cellular for Safari, but it didn't seem to fix it. If someone can address this, I'd appreciate it as well.)
Can anyone offer any advice at all? I would really like to find some way of stopping, or at least slowing down, this apparently-excessive cellular usage. Or at least understand where it’s coming from. I’m sophisticated enough to follow diagnostic instructions, Terminal-friendly, etc., so if there’s some tool I can use on my iMac when my iPad’s plugged in, or some such, I should be able to handle it.
Thanks.

OK, someone needs to explain this to me. Seriously.
If you read my posts, you may infer that in the back of my mind has been the annoying suspicion that this was somehow an iOS/iCloud issue, based on the timing (the problem appeared just last fall, almost immediately after iOS 8 was released), and the persistence despite restore/rebuilds and even a new iPad.
iOS 8.3 was released April 8. My "incidental" cellular usage dropped precipitously immediately afterwards. Look at this, my cellular usage for April, according to Data Usage:

I don't want to jinx it, but it looks like something in the 8.3 release fixed my problem, whatever it was. This is the kind of usage I'd been used to seeing through last Summer.
So. Is there someone out there who reads this and is (a) familiar enough with iOS to understand how and when cellular data is consumed, and (b) is familiar enough with the 8.3 release — and the changes it comprised — to take a shot at explaining what may have been going on?
I'm happy to just shut up and accept that it's fixed , but I am curious.
Thanks.

  • Apple TV just ate a gig of cell data thru iPad hotspot and all I was doing was playing iTunes off Mac

    1 Gig on a 4 gig cell plan gone forever and it's only 8 days into billing month. iPad has wifi  and personal hotspot on. Mac mini and ATV both connected. All I'm doing is playing iTunes and running photos from Mac to TV. No movies, no surfing on ATV.  2 hours later I happened to check the iPad and all this cell data is used up. Oh yeah, I also had an old iPhone connected to use as ATV remote. It all works great but I really need to know what, why and where the cell data went.
    Yes I live in an area where my only choice for internet in thru cell towers. Thus a 3 gig plan on iPhone and a 4 gig plan on iPad. Expensive yes, but I have little choice and now I am stuck till a new billing period starts. Thankfully none of the devices downloaded 8.0.2 or I'd really be screwed. For that I have to go begging for someone's cable connection or try a public wifi if I have 4 hours to kill.
    Side gripe. Since you can no longer get OS upgrades on CD, the Mac never did get Maverick upgrade. Setting up a wifi connection to download 4-5 gigs to Mac ain't gonna happen. I tell ya, us off the wired grid people get no respect.

    Another day, another failure. ATV will not connect to iPad wifi unless Personal Hotspot is turned on which you can't turn on without Cellular Data being turned on. So, at this point I have a $99 brick. Oh wait, it cached my photos and displays those just fine. Thanks so much Apple for thinking of us stuck in "3rd world country" outside a major US city.  ATT does not offer U-verse in our area, there's no cable service and I'll be damned if I get a satellite dish with 500 stations I don't want to watch.
    As it is now I have 1 gig of cell data left on my iPad for the next 3 weeks which if I manage wisely will be just enough to read the local newspaper pdf each morning. Well, the iPhone gets it's 3 gig allotment in a few days so that is enough for basic stuff - like logging in here and ********.
    FYI - I tried a software update at MickyD yesterday just for grins - 3 hours remaining, then 2 hours, then 5 hours… Right….
    Guess I should be happy iTunes didn't automatically download U2.

  • The Difference between "Cell Data" and "Dimension Data"?

    What is the difference between the tab "Cell Data" and "Dimension Data" in SSAS?

    Article quote: " SSAS provides the way to secure analysis services database/cube data from unauthorized access. Analysis services provides secure access by creating object called "roles". After creation of role, user's windows login credential can be used
    to enroll into particular role because analysis services identifies user from their windows login credentials . You can protect your data in roles at two levels:
    1) Dimension level
    2) Cell level
    If user has been assigned more than one role, analysis services loop through all assigned roles after login. Analysis services finds all permission level for the particular user and  union all the permission levels.
    If two roles has contradictory access for user then particular access will be allowed. Suppose role1 says Australia data access and role2 denies Australia data access then access to Australia data will be allowed. "

  • HT4623 I have the 1st ipad 3G wifi cell 64g and it keeps crashing how can I fix this problem

    I have the 1st ipad 3G wifi cell 64g and it keeps crashing how can I fix this ?
    I have restored network settings and cleared history etc ..

    Try closing all apps and reboot the iPad. Clear Safari again as well.
    Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
    Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data.
    Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Yahoo mail using all my iphone cell data

    In the last month, my cell data use has quadrupled (usually average around 2.5GB, now I'm on pace to hit 7.5GB by the end of the month). The culprit seems to be my Yahoo mail coming into the iphone mail app. I've had the account for over a decade, so there is a lot of mail there, but I can't limit how much it's bringing in (thanks, Yahoo). Any ideas as to bugs going on about Yahoo mail servers sucking up all the cell data? I don't have the option of being on wifi at work during the day, so this is a big pain.

    Thanks, You know..... it happened with me once before when I first use the windows live mail client.... I contacted yahoo staff and they replied with the same as you replied......( I thought that there is  way to do what I wanted )...
    By the way they advised me, if I wanted to get my folders .... I have to MOVE messages from specific folder to INBOX then SYNC imail then CREATE folder in imail with the same name as in my yahoo and so on !!!!
    OK, if there are ways to sync the WINDOWS LIVE MAIL accounts and its folders, it will be great..... Does anyone know HOW TO ?

  • View Account irregularity on iPad 2 using 3G data plan

    I have a 64GB iPad 2 + 3G. I do not have access to wifi. I rely on 3G only from Verizon.
    Noticed something weird the last two days. When I went to View Account in Settings, it stated I had 0 MBs left for the next twenty days.
    I had also received an email earlier stating I only had 2 percent of my data plan left for the month.
    Yet, I am still able to access this site and others right now. Normally when my data plan is exhausted prior to the 30-day expiration date, I have no access until the my plan automatically renews or I add more data sooner. I get 1GB per thirty-day period for $20.
    So, either the 0 MBs stated in View Account is wrong and I actually have data remaining, or there is a glitch allowing me 3G without me having to add data.
    If it is some error, I am wondering if my carrier will turn around and bill me for using data that I have not been charged for. I guess that would only be fair. But I did not ask for the extra data yet. I usually wait until the next renewal date. Has anyone else had this situation? To be safe I may stop using it until my renewal date comes up again.
    Also, I have seen some posts from iPad+ 3G users saying they will use wifi mostly and 3G only when needed. I think I read that the carrier will cancel the iPad's capability for 3G if you go more than one month without buying data? So, if a user were to use 3G in February and not use it again until June, he wouldn't be able to use the 3G capability any longer? Has this happened to you? Just curious in the event I want to take a long break from automatic renewal of my 3G plan to save money. Thanks.

    This happens also on my iPhone 3GS as well. The problem with Apple's WI-FI implementation is that, it will say it is connected to WI-FI but if it's not getting any DHCP information from your router, the internet is routed through your 3G connection until routing information is established! Secondly, the iPad's WI-FI performance is less than stellar compared to my 3GS phone. Thirdly, TURN OFF notification and location based functions! They are data suckers! My Virgin Mobile MIFI $10 data plan, which is about 100Mb, the iPad sucked the bloody bandwidth in a mere 3 hrs! Best to turn off the 3G data function until you need it.
    Which is why, I never got the 3G version of the iPad unless I have a wallet full of cash to burn.

  • IPhone 6 won't connect to cell data after leaving wifi

    iPhone 6 won't connect to cell data after leaving wifi signal.  Need to reboot or go into airplane mode.  My area has LTE, but iPhone hasn't connected to that ever.  I'm thinking bad antenna or is this a cell provider problem.  I'm on AT&T.

  • Can not retrieve cell data content From BLOB object.

    I have load Image into Georaster with Raster_Table following:
    create table rdt_1 of mdsys.sdo_raster
    (primary key (rasterId, pyramidLevel, bandBlockNumber,
    rowBlockNumber, columnBlockNumber))
    lob(rasterblock) store as (nocache nologging);
    After I load Image successful, I continue load all cell data into BLOB object by:
    DECLARE
    gr sdo_georaster;
    lb blob;
    BEGIN
    SELECT georaster INTO gr FROM georaster_table WHERE georid=2;
    dbms_lob.createTemporary(lb, FALSE);
    sdo_geor.getRasterData(gr, 0, lb);
    dbms_lob.freeTemporary(lb);
    END;
    Please give me simple PL/SQL to retrieval content from BLOB object!
    Thank You very much!
    YuMi

    BLOB stands for Binary Large OBject. However the acronym has a pleasing affinity with the actual nature of the thing. In a database a BLOB is an undiffereniated mass of bytes. We don't know whether it's a spreadsheet or a word document or an image. So there is no out-of-the-box API for treating a BLOB as it's native file type.
    Having said that there may be something in the Spatial API that works with such things - you might be better off asking the question in Spatial. Although I suspect that venue doesn't get as much through traffic as this one.

  • Not receiving texts from iPhone contacts when I'm not connected to wifi or cell data. I can't send and receive regular SMS texts with non iMessage users but iMessage users message are not being converted to text when I don't have internet connect

    I can send and receive to any non iPhone user. I can send a message as a text to an iPhone user but if I'm not connected to cellular data or wifi I do not receive messages from iPhone contacts. From what I understand these message should automatically send to me as texts instead of iMessages but since the update it's not functioning properly. Please help. I've tried turning iMessage off and I still don't receive the messages until after I reconnect to wifi.

    I have the same problem! Before the upgrade, if I wasn't connected to the internet, any messages sent to me from an iphone would convert automatically to a text message. I have payg tarriff, so I turn cell data off, as it costs too much to use it. I have wifi at home and work, but if I'm out and about, I don't receive texts from iphone users until I'm on wifi. I get them ok from non iphone users. There was never any problem until ios7

  • Cell Data Usage SKYROCKETED Out of Nowhere (possibly after iOS update) on iPhone 4. What gives?

    The problem is actually happening on my wife's phone. She has never used more than maybe 30 megs of data in a given month, and she has had the 3G and the 4 for close to 4 years now. Her phone is either at our house or her office 95% of the time which both have wifi of which she is connected on. All of the sudden, we get texts and emails saying her data is at 65% of 200megs after about 10 days of the month. Then we have a three day weekend where her phone never leaves our house and somehow there was about 50 megs of data used over that span according to ATT website.
    After much research I found out that if the phone is not plugged in and goes into "sleep" mode, it switches back to 3G (cell data) in order to conserve battery life (This should be an option or something, seems ridiculous). So push notifications and possibly email updates are using cell data rather than wifi.
    Even with all that, I cannot think of anything that would be causing at some times over 30 megs a day being transferred. She is a light email user, her phone is set to download headings only, we have her iCloud stuff shut off, etc.
    As one last bit, two days ago we turned her cell data completely off in the settings. She turned it back on for maybe 5 mins while sitting at a restaurant to check facebook, and ATT says there was 13 megs of data sent.
    Any ideas? I really dont want to start shelling out more money for what seems like a friggin backend scam to me.

    Hi Andrey,
    I think I have figured it out. It has to do with my iCloud account. After a lot of reasearch I found a bunch of people with the same problem, and the fix for now is to COMPLETELY DELETE your iCloud account. Simply turning everything off does not work. I immediately did this on my wife and my phones and everything went back to normal.
    It appears to be a bug, because mine was only supposed to be updating my "notes" which shouldnt take 30 megs a day. Hope they fix it soon.

    How can I delete a watched rented movie from my Ipad before its expiration date?

    Hello, K M Cartwright.
    Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
    You definitely can delete the movie prior to the expiration date.  However, the movie will automatically disappear from your iTunes library 24 (or 48) hours after you've begun viewing it.  Here are the steps on how to delete iTunes media.
    How to delete content you've downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store

  • Apps turning back on cell data when restrictions are turned on

    I am having a very frustrating issue that I can't seem to solve.
    I recently allowed my son to get a cell phone (an iPhone 4S). We have Sprint and have a 1GB data cap on each phone.
    I knew he would want to play games and such using a lot of data. So I went in and disabled all the apps that I did not want to use cellular data and then I went into "restrictions" and clicked on "do not allow changes" for cell data.
    A few days later I was looking over data usage and was shocked to see that he had almost used up all his allowance. So I went through his phone and sure enough several of the apps that I turned off cell data was turned back on.
    I went through and redone the whole process of disabling the apps, making sure restrictions were turned back on, and even changed the restrictions password in case he figured it out. Checked back that evening and the same apps that I turned off were turned back on.
    This is extremely frustrating and worrying because I can't just turn off data because I need it to keep track of his phone but I'm afraid that if I leave it on he will blow through his data cap and cause some big overcharges.
    Anyone have a solution?
    Thanks

    Thanks for your suggestions...I appreciate it.  Verizon is getting a call today.
    Mine does that from time to time.  When the phone is still on, take the back off and pull the battery out for about 5 seconds then pop it back in and turn it on.  My brother is an in store tech and he said that it does a different kind of "reset" when you pull the battery out than it does by just turning it off.  I've had the thing with the screen scrolling on its own or what have you happen about 3 times now in the 2 months I've had it, and whenever I take the battery out and put it back in, fixes the problem.
    Hope that works for you.
    Yeah, even the techs have been recommending in store not to do the 2.2 until some bugs are worked out.  Sad sad sad...

    I currently run OS X 10.10.1
    Now i have been trying to work on this for a while now and what i want to do should be simple but its apparently not.
    Here is an example of what i want to happen.
    I will have 2 tabs: Contact | Sales
    Now Contacts will have the list of names and various information about a customer, While Sales will have one drop-down box for each Cell Row that will show the names of the person in tab contacts
    for what i am wanting to do i cant use the data format pop-up menu because the list is edited everyday several times a day.
    Now how do i do this, Excel can do this so how can numbers do it?

    Hi Shegra,
    Paste this into a applescript editor window and run it from there. In the script you may need to adjust the four properties to agree with your spreadsheet. Let me know if you have any questions.

  • How can i re-enable/restore a disabled iPad and keep the data without using a laptop or iCloud

    Hello,
    Is there a way to re-enable a disabled iPad and maintain the data taking into consideration that no iCloud backup was made and the computer it was last synced with was not available? any idea?

    No, sorry.  Without a backup in iCloud or iTunes, you will have to set it up as if new and anything on it will be lost now.
    You can always re-download purchased apps and content (other than audiobooks) once it is restored, from the respective iTunes or App stores.
