IPad sync and backup in two computers?

I have the first-generation iPad, and I plan to buy the new one in a few weeks. Now, I want to restore the new iPad from a backup and migrate all my data, however, my PC where I synced it no longer functions. I just need to know if there is a way to transfer my data from my old iPad to my son's iMac. Please reply. Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
As you may have already found out, your iPod can only sync with one computer. This includes contacts and calenders. If you use the same software for contacts/calendars on both computers, you can export the files to your iPod. Just enable your iPod for disk mode under the iPod preferences pane, and export the files to your iPod. At the computer you sync music with, import the files from the other computer. You now will have a "master" contacts/calendar listing on the computer, so when you sync, you will have all of your contancts/appointments. Hope this helps!

  • When setting up sync how does sync manage information from two computers? Does it merge the information?

    When setting up sync how does sync manage information from two computers? Does it merge the information?

    Hi!
    Yes, the way Sync works is that it puts all the Bookmarks together and pushes them to all your devices. Same with History.
    You will not loose any information in any of your computers.

  • ITunes 7.7.1 has completely hosed my sync and backups!

    Other than the well know 3G and stability issues, my iPhone 3G has been behaving well since I got it two weeks ago (I did a restore as soon as I got it home).
    But with the iTunes 7.7.1 release, the sync and backup process are hosed.
    Backups
    -Take 30 minutes or more every **** sync.
    -On the Edit/Prefs/Syncing tab, the backup file listed is "Unknown", and the time stamp is 12/31/2000 7:00pm.
    Syncing
    -If I resync (say, to install a downloaded application update), the iPhone crashes out of the sync back to the home screen while iTunes continues to think the iPhone is syncing. And I can't get the iPhone to resync unless I kill iTunes (which won't stop even after I tell it to quit even though it's syncing [it's not, the iPhone isn't even in the cradle at that point]); sometimes iTunes won't die without killing it from the Windows Task Manager.
    Moral - if your iPhone and iTunes are getting along, *DO NOT* install 7.7.1 - things can only get worse.

  • Difference between Sync and Backup?

    I've asked AppleCare but can't seem to get an understandable answer. Maybe someone can help here.
    What is the difference between doing a Backup and doing a Sync via iTunes on your computer for either your iPad or iPhone?
    Thanks,
    Steven

    Here is a portion of the support article mentioned above. The way I can personally understand it is that the sync transfers the content back and forth and a backup is created when you perform the sync. This talks in terms of the iPod and iPhone but it works the same for the iPad.
    About Syncing and Backups
    You can use iTunes to sync content on your computer (such as music, applications, podcasts, videos, ringtones, photos, notes, email account settings, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks) with your iPhone or iPod touch (Note: Some content is available only on iPhone and some features require iOS 2.0 or later software). Syncing makes sure this content is the same on your iPhone or iPod touch and computer.
    iTunes creates a backup of your iPhone or iPod touch when you sync, which you can then use to restore from if you need to return to a previously backed-up state. You can use a backup to transfer this information to a new device, except for some specific exceptions noted in parenthesis below. With iOS 4 and later, if you encrypt the backup it can transfer the keychain items (passwords, credentials) to a new device.
    If you protect your iPhone or iPod touch with a passcode, you will be prompted to enter the passcode when you connect to iTunes. Once you successfully enter the passcode, iTunes will recognize that device as authorized and you will not need your passcode to back up or sync. When restoring from an iOS 4 (or later) backup, if the device had a passcode set, iTunes will ask if you want to set a passcode (and remind you that you had protected your device with a passcode.) iTunes will not ask you to set a passcode when restoring from iOS 3.x and prior backups.
    iTunes only keeps one backup created during the sync process for each device. If you restore the iPhone or iPod touch and choose to set up as a new device from the Set Up your iPhone (or iPod touch) screen, iTunes will automatically sync and create a new, empty backup that will replace your previous backup. If you change your mind and want to restore to your previous state, you will have to retrieve your previous device backup from Time Machine (on your Mac), or other backup solution you regularly use. If you have Mac OS X 10.5.5 or later and use Time Machine, you may use Time Machine to find a previous backup.

  • Why does it take hours to sync and backup a 12GB data?

    Does anyone know why it takes hours and hours to just sync and backup my 16GB iPhone 3GS before it installs the iOS5? This is getting rediculous! Why do Apple force us to use iTunes?

    Shouldn't take that long although waiting a long time in between syncs can create longer backup times...  ie more data, apps, etc... to back up etc...  Make sure both iPad and iTunes are most current versions.  Make sure you are using the iPad sync cord that came with the device and not another from a iPhone or iPod.  Cables can screw up the deal.
    Start there first and let us know how it goes.

  • Cannot sync and backup the iPhone using iTunes

    I developed the program and uploaded it on the iPhone. The problem is that with the my application installed, I cannot sync and backup the phone using iTunes. As soon as the app is removed, I was able to perform the expected sequence of backing up and syncing the phone. This issue affects both Windows and Mac users of the iPhone app. This happened on iOS 4.0 with both an iPhone 4 and 3GS. How can I solve this problem?

    The cheap way: Sign out on Comp 1 or Comp 2, sign in on Comp 3 if you don't need all three going at once.
    The costly way: Open a second Photography Plan and you should have a total of four seats.

  • Can I sync one iPhone via two computers (MacBook and Windows XP) using iTunes?

    My idea is the following:
    Sync one iPhone using iTunes installed on two computers:
    from Windows XP:
    * Outlook 2010 contacts
    * Outlook 2010 calendar
    * music
    from MacBook:
    * contacts
    OR
    from Windows XP:
    * Outlook 2010 contacts
    * Outlook 2010 calendar
    from MacBook:
    * contacts
    * music
    Can I do this?
    How would I have to do the set-up?
    Additional question: Can I buy apps from iTunes App Store on either of the two computers and having them downloaded automatically on the iPhone?

    You can't. You can only sync with one library at a time. I is possible, though not recommended, to sync contacts with one computer and media with another. There is no way to sync contacts with more than one computer.
    The best idea would be to sync it with your MacBook and the cloud, and sync Outlook on the PC with the cloud.
    Since iCloud requires Windows 7, you would probably be best to sync contacts and calendars with Google or Yahoo.

  • How do I sync changes to my address books and emails between two computers?

    I have a desktop and laptop. I want to be able to synchronize my changes between the two computers. For instance when I add a new contact or delete email from my desktop I want those changes to be synced on the laptop. I have three email addresses which are all POP accounts.

    Email? Use IMAP. Your current POP-based service is fundamentally unsuited to your needs.
    Contacts are not so easy. You need a common central data store that all your installed address books can synchronize with. Google Contacts is one such, but there are difficulties in that it and Thunderbird handle street addresses differently. I use gContactSync to synchronize Thunderbird with Google and for the most parts it's quite satisfactory. Where I have trouble is with a Blackberry, but the Blackberry phone has various other issues that lead me to think that Blackberry coding is not of the highest quality.
    Another (and non-google) solution is this add-on:
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/addressbooks-synchronizer/
    which can sync your address books to a variety of different resources, including a folder in an email account. So this is fine between various installations of Thunderbird, but probably can't reach out to other devices or email clients. I haven't tried it with an ftp server yet; if you are able to run your own then this may offer the best way of using this add-on.
    I think a cause for concern is that Thunderbird's Address Book use a "flat file" format, where each address book is stored within a single file. So one small minor change to one Contact potentially necessitates the whole file (address book) being updated, leading to large and therefore slow transfers between Thunderbird and the relevant server.

  • Is it possible to transfer file wirelessly from pc to ipad(like you do with usb through itune)? not syncing and backup

    So basically i want the exact same thing/function of using a usb to transfer file from pc to ipad through itunes but wirelessly? for example i am using kindle and playerxtreme(video app) on ipad air and i have some file i want to add. normally i would connect the ipad and pc through usb and transfer file with itunes but is there anyway where i can use wifi to transfer file with itunes instead of having to use the usb cable?

    It is possible if your device runs iOS 5 or newer version and you're using iTunes 10.5 or newer. It's called WiFi sync https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203075
    I find it useless because in order to sync, your device must be charging (plugged in). I figure if I have to charge the device (plugged in to the charger) to sync wirelessly, I may as well plug it in to the computer. Sync speed is a lot faster over USB connection anyway.

  • I have a question about downloading and itunes on TWO computers.

    Hmm, not sure this will help, but let's try...
    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
    Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
    I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
    As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.

  • Syncing iPhoto library on two computers

    My wife wants to have access to her VERY LARGE iPhoto '08 library on two computers - the desktop (her preferred) and the laptop (when the boys are doing homework on the desktop).
    Rather than try to share the same library (i.e., networked drive), I set up the two to sync the library. Using +Folders Synchronizer 3.6.2+ (which is able to read and sync the package contents), I have the two libraries syncing so there is a duplicate of her library on both computers (also provides a bit of a backup).
    The sync seems to be working well - EXCEPT the changes are not showing up in the iPhoto viewer. In other words...
    ...she added pictures to iPhoto on the desktop and then synced the laptop.
    ...Looking inside the iPhoto library (show package contents...) on the laptop and the new pictures were copied to the laptop.
    ...HOWEVER, when she opens iPhoto on the laptop they don't show up in the window.
    I'm sure I'm missing something brainless. I thought it might be that the library needed to be updated but can't figure out how?
    Any ideas? Thanks.

    Danktuft:
    If you have an external HD connected to the Mac then it's a very easy thing to do. See Apple's KB document on iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users. Trying to get a library in the Shared folder to accept two different users is difficult. There is a site describing how to do that using Access Control Lists in Tiger: Share an iPhoto Library in Tiger Using ACL's. It may not work if you upgrade to Leopard at a later date. By far the easiest way is the external HD method.
    Happy New Year
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • HT4910 Does both my iphone and ipad sync and so use only space for one on icloud, or does it needlessly copy everything twice?  How do I archive photos and only carry latest to minimize icloud storage.

    Trying to cut down on storage in icloud.  How do I leave all but last two years of photos on pc and remove from icloud?  Samsung i7 syncs docs, calendr & photos with  ipad and iphone 5s.  Do these replicate same photos, docs etc in icloud storage or do they sync and then store?  My storage has doubled for some reason.  I have cut back on what I backup, but numbers still huge.  How do I manage what is in icloud?  Would like to see what is actually stored.  Thanks for any help.

    Photo stream photos don't use any of your iCloud storage, only camera roll photos do, which are included in your iCloud backup.
    You can see some of what is using your storage by going to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage.  The backup also includes text messages, so if you have lots of photos and videos in your messages this can drive up the size of your backup.
    This article provides some suggestions on how to manage and reduce your storage: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4847.
