Our old computer crashed which had all the kids ipod touch library on it. Now when I try to connect them to new computer it says I need to erase all data, apps, etc. to sync with new computer. It is saying that it can only be connected to one library at a time. Is their anyway around this without having ot erase all their stuff?

    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the new computer by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like on of those discussed here:
    newer copy
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from that backup.
Note that the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your iPod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in iTunes and transferred your purchases.

  • 2 iPhones need to sync with new computer

I just purchased a new HP computer and downloaded iTunes but I need to know how to sync two iPhones to the new comp without losing all the data off the phones... Also, what is the easiest way to move my library to new computer?

Transfer your iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer along with all other important data from your old computer that you will need or want to access on your new computer such as documents, folders, etc. You can use the external drive that you use for backup purposes as long as the external drive has adequate storage capacity to store/transfer your entire iTunes library. You also need to authorize your new computer with your iTunes account with iTunes.

  • IPad syncing with new installation

I've had my iPad synced with my Mac Pro running Leopard since I've had it.
For one reason or another I've never got around to updating to Snow Leopard despite having a disc partly as I had some incompatible apps, partly as the Leopard system has been pretty stable.
The other day I decided it was time to change to Snow Leopard but removed the Leopard boot drive rather than upgrading, and stuck in a new drive and did a 'fresh' install on that from the DVD.
Gradually recreating an iTunes library on the new drive by adding media files.
Clearly this iTunes instance has never seen the iPad before, but my question is will I be able to connect and backup current iPad installation to this effectively new computer or should I swap the Leopard drive back in to do this?
Also if I run into problems will I still be able to restore an older backup from the Leopard drive?
BTW I generally manually add media files to the iPad, and assume they might disappear if I sync with a new iTunes instance even if I disable automatic syncing in iTunes?
    Thanks in advance?

    Thanks for the suggestion.
My older itunes folder/library was in a bit of a mess so I wanted to start with a clean slate and repopulate from scratch, weeding out rubbish. I have media spread out on loads of smaller drives some of which does not have correct metadata as I haven't added it, so taking the opportunity to spring clean/tidy up.

  • HT4059 Backing up iBooks to sync with new computer

I just purchased a new MacBook pro and need to sync my iPad to it. I have several books with notes and underlining I don't want to lose, not to mention, the organization of the books and PDF files.
I setup itunes on the new computer by copying over the files and bringing in the library file. That all worked great. When I hookup my iPad, however, it knows it has never synced with this computer so it wants to wipe it out and start over. I'm guessing that means I'll lose all the iBooks stuff, plus the other notes and things I've saved in other apps.
Can you help me get around this? Thanks!!

  • IPhone 4 won't sync with new computer

When I connect my iPhone 4 to my computer, music, movies, and apps don't sync to the phone from the computer. I just switched computers and this was the first sync with the new computer. I've tried syncing with this computer multiple times, but the only things still on the phone are contacts, apps from before the switch, and music I've bought within the past few days on the device. I was using a Mac OS X Snow Leopard (pretty sure) and the new computer is a Mac OS X Lion.

Just checked my iTunes, don't seem to be having this problem. Here is what I can recommend:
    Restart iTunes, it may help
    Restart Computer if 1 fails.
If you're on Mac, update to latest iTunes (released today)
Restart iPhone and then iTunes and then plug it in

  • How do I un-sync my iPad from old computer in order to sync with new computer?

Have a new lap top and want to sync my iPad to it.  Since it can only sync to one device, how do I un-sync from old lap top in order to sync to new lap top?

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPad. Only if you back up your device manually before syncing, you can restore it from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Here's what to do:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPad to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your iPad without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your iPad for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPad for the first time.

  • Ipad syncing to new computer

Have read the messages on syncing to a new computer, it does not answer the problem of books, some of them sample books, that I have downloaded, what will happen to these when I follow the instructions 'erase and sync'?
    Thanx

when you plug in the ipad to new computer make sure you select file/transfer purchases from ipad as first priority and you wont loose anything, if you do something wrong the apps will still be on your older computer.

  • IPhone & iPad sync with new library

Okay, so I just received a brand new MacBook Pro. Sweet. I hooked my phone up to sync it. I got a message saying your phone is synced with another library, can't be synced with more than one library, etc. So I emailed iTunes, explained my situation, they said you can manually sync it from the iphone page in iTunes. I clicked the little check box, but the same message come up. I emailed them back, they said it was weird, and try apple discussions. So here is the problem. I have all my music on my new MacBook Pro, but my apps never transferred over from my old computer to my new one. If I delete all the content on my iPhone, then I lose all my apps. Same thing goes for my iPad. What can I do?

You don't have to move everything from the old computer, just the files inside the iTunes folder (iTunes Library or iTunes Music Library and the .xml version, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music, Mobile Applications, ipod Games, etc...)
If you didn't use Migration Assistant to move your data from the old computer to the new one, you may have to right click on each of the files and folder and choose "Get Info" and change the permissions to "Everyone" can "Read and Write" before you copy them to the new computer.
If 100% of your music and movie files and apps are already on the iPod, and you can't copy everything from the old Mac to new one, then you could try this:
    (1) In the new Mac make sure you are logged into the iTunes store and the computer is "Authorized" under the menu "Store > Authorize This Computer"
    (2) Use "File > Transfer Purchases from iPod" to get you purchased content,
    (3) You may need to find a free app online called "Senuti" to transfer non-purchased music like rips from CD's, but I don't know if this will import non-purchased movies. (Senuti is iTunes spelled backwards)
    (4) Then use "File > Library > Import Playlists and only import just the old "iTunes Library.xml file from the old computer into the new one. (if you want all your old playlists)
In my case I would need a 900Gb - 1Tb iPod to fit my entire library on one device, but it sounds like your library was small.

  • Need iPhone to sync with new computer...

My old iBook G4 has passed away and I need to sync up my iPhone with another older G4 iBook. I've attached the iPhone, however since the phone is "married" to another computer my option is to wipe the iPhone and start over. I'm wondering...is there a way around having to erase my current data on the iPhone and set up the iBook to, from this point on be the computer with which the phone is synced with? I was unable to obtain any information from the deceased iBook....i.e. any prefs, account info etc...
Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!!

An iPhone is only "married" to a single computer in regards to iTunes content and photos transferred to your iPhone. An iPhone can be synced with a single iTunes library only.
If you don't have a backup of your iTunes library and photos transferred to your iPhone from your previous computer, you have a problem.
iTunes includes an option to transfer content that was purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes Store only.
With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
If the Address Book is empty on this Mac, before syncing contact info enter one contact in the Address Book. Make one up if needed which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing contact info which you want to select. The same applies to iCal and syncing calendar events before syncing calendar events.
