IPad thinks it is connected to a dock connector = no sound

Over the past few days, my iPad 2 will suddenly lose sound. When I check the audio output, 'Dock Connector' is always checked. Unfortunately, I don't owe any dock connector nor has my iPad never been connected to one. I read elsewhere that this may be a 30 pin connector issue. I tried cleaning the 30 pin connector slot out as suggested elsewhere but it didn't really help. The issue usually resolves on its own but it is annoying nonetheless. Anyone else having this problem & how did you resolve it.

I had this exact problem with my iPad 2, and what I did was gently (gently is the key) jiggle the 30-pin connector with a small screwdriver, like you get in those computer or eyeglass repair kits. I ran the screwdriver along the length of the connector, and the sound would suddenly re-appear at certain points, and then disappear again when I removed the screwdriver. I kept gently probing the connector with the screwdriver, and jiggling it slightly up and down. It seemed to work better when I jiggled it downward (toward the back of the iPad). At one point, the sound came back for several minutes, and I thought I had fixed it, but then the sound went away again. Finally, I pressed slightly harder on the connector downward (again, toward the back of the iPad) and held it for a few seconds, and that seems to have permanently fixed it, at least until it happens again. Based on the results, I would say that either the connector gets a bit loose when the charger is removed abruptly in an upward direction (toward the front of the iPad), or there was a short in the connector that probing with the screwdriver eventually cleared. I felt like I had nothing to lose, since I had brought it to the Genius bar and they said the fix was to get a new iPad, and because I was out of warranty, it would cost $299. I didn't think I could possibly make it worse with the screwdriver, so I gave it a shot.

  • HT204291 my ipad2 thinks it is airplaying to the Dock Connector

my ipad2 thinks it is airplaying to the Dock Connector any fix? I shut off bluetooth, reset all settings, blew out the dock connector with a can of air and held down the top switch and round button, already.

turn the volme bar down no you can see the orange bit, then lock the screen. Leav eyour phone/ipad/ipod for a few minutes then turn the volume bar up and go into your iphone/ipad and it should work, otherwise all youll have todo is give the charging point a good hard blow/compressed air which should also work.

Options for when an iOS device gets locked because of forgotten passcode:
Restore (and reset passcode) on your device by connecting it to the last computer to which it was connected:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you cannot connect it to the computer to which the device was last connected (or the device was never connected to a computer) you will have to use recovery mode to completely reset the device, losing all data:
iOS: Unable to update or restore - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 - recovery mode (e.g., cannot connect to computer last used to sync device, iTunes still asks for a password)

  • My phone thinks it is connected to a dock all the time and will not play any sound or ring what do i need to do?

my phone thinks that it is connected to a dock all the time and wont play ringtones or any other sound. I know that the speakers work because it will randomly play sound but for a very short amount of time and just recently stopped making sounds all together. the phone is almost brand new and has no damage I just bought it a few months ago. What can I do to fix the problem?

Clean iPhone charging port with a clean dry toothbrush. See if better. If not, clean again with toothbrush and small amount of Isopropyl Alcohol. See if better. If not, try Restore. If still a problem, and there is Warranty or AppleCare make Genius reservation and take to Apple for resolution.

  • Can I connect iPod (with dock connector) with just a USB connector?

My mother-in-law gave my daughter her old iPod (with dock connector). It was supposed to come with an adapter that converts the 6-pin firewire cable to a USB cable (you are supposed to plug the 6-pin into the dock connector to charge it, then use the adapter to connect to your computer). We never got The adapter, so I just used USB connector from my own iPod nano to connect the old iPod into the computer. All kinds of error messages. I've now restored the iPod and it seems to be working, but I'm afraid to plug it back in using just the USB cable. Is it possible to connect the USB cable directly from the iPod to the computer without the adapter? Or could the problem be that I have also use my iPod nano on this computer? Thanks for any help you can provide.

A 15GB iPod would have to be a 3rd gen iPod.  It has a touch (not click) wheel with four touch buttons in a row that glow orange during use, correct?  That model needs to be connected using FireWire, because it cannot charge over USB.
If your new Mac has a Thunderbolt port, you can get an adapter for FireWire
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
plus an adapter for FireWire 800 to FireWire 400
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/FIR1369AD/
Another way, if you have the square white FireWire power adapter that came with your iPod, is to get a special docking cable that Apple used to sell a long time ago.  It has both USB and FireWire connectors.  Here's a listing for a third-party version on eBay
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Vanco-iPod-Dock-Connector-to-1-USB-1-FireWire-Cable-/2 71074766489?pt=US_MP3_Player_Chargers_Cradles&hash=item3f1d50ae99
(Search on "FireWire USB iPod docking cable" to see other listings.)
What you do with this thing is plug the USB connector to your Mac's USB port, the FireWire connector to the FireWire power adapter, and the dock connector to the iPod.  iPod can then sync over USB while getting power over FireWire.
I would go with that special cable, to avoid using a series of adapters (which adds complexity and unreliability) and tying up the valuable Thunderbolt port for just your iPod.

  • My iphone 4 keeps saying it is connected to a dock connector and my sound wont play but in my headphones the sound plays can someone please help me?

    please please please help me

    Hello Youngdoby,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like the phone thinks it is still plugged into a dock connection but it is not.
I would first recommend, if you do have a dock connection, plug it in there and if it shows in iTunes eject it first, then unplug it. If it does not show in iTunes unplug it, and then reset the device with this process:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    Resetting your device
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
That should get your iPhone working properly again.
    Take care,
    Sterling

My son's ipod touch says its connected to a dock connector when it's not. It won't play music and there is no sound on games. It has 5.1 installed. It's been restored and reset multiple times. Any suggestions?

It says this when not connected to the dock. His dock is an ihome which isn't an official Apple dock. I think my next step is to take the thing in to an Apple store.

  • Connecting audio & power through dock connector in car?

I currently connect my nano directly to my car stereo through the dock connector. I know they have car chargers that connect to the dock connector. My question is this: Is there is any kind of dock that will run the audio through the connector and also allow connection to a charger at the same time?

OK here is one I ran across that might work for you. It has RCA jacks for the audio output, so you could plug them into the RCA Aux jacks on the back of many head units.
If you have a 1/8 phono jack on the front of the head unit, then you would need to convert the RCA jacks back to 1/8 phono with an adapter cable or slice it up and wire in your own phono plug. Is that how your unit is? A 1/8" headphone type plug on the front of the unit?

  • Phantom Dock Connector Speaker Problem

The internal speaker on my iPhone 4S will only play music through the internal speaker when it's connected to a dock connector.  The same applies to telephone sounds and live conversations, but not alerts which play any time.
When it's NOT connected, the volume slider at the bottom of the screen disappears and so does the sound.  The phone is acting as though it's connected to a dock connector when its not and vice versa.  Extremely annoying, especially when someone calls you and you can't hear.
I've restarted twice and reset all the settings, and I searched this forum and found a similar problem that occurred earlier this month.  In that case, the phantom dock connector was "connecting" intermittently, and blocking the sound from the speaker.  The user posted a screen shot that is similar to one that appears on my phone.
Here's what it looks like when the phone is NOT connected and an Airplay source is present:
I have thoroughly inspected the dock connector and the headphone jack.  No apparent damage and no dust.  This phone is about 2 months old.

Well, for anyone still having this issue - found a solution that seems to work for most people (worked for me).
    I read it here: http://www.schrijversblok.nl/index.php/2011/08/15/oplossing-voor-ipad-geen-gelui d-dock-connector-probleem/
Basically it says that the problem is indeed caused by a piece of dust/dirt touching a component making the iPhone think there is dock connector plugged in. Cleaning it should be the solution of this. The easy test is setting up an extra audio output by connecting to a bluetooth speaker or something so that you can get the same screen the OP has there on his screenshot (where you actually see the "Dock Connector" option. Then refresh that screen as you blow warm air into the connector. If for a few seconds it reads "iPhone" again instead of "dock connector", you are now 100% certain that dust/dirt is the problem.
For those of you who have no sounds at all, not even a volume bar, it's probably your actual speakers that aren't working. You can probably test this by letting the iPhone play an alarm sound or a ringtone - those come through the speakers even if he thinks there is a dock connector plugged in.
If the warm air trick worked, cleaning it should definitely fix the problem for you. The method that is proposed in the article made me laugh so hard that I just had to try it. Put your vacuum cleaner on it to suck it out! Naturally there is some risk in that, you might accidentally dislodge some other component inside the phone and then you really have a problem. It's probably a good idea to start with the vacuum cleaner not at 100% capacity and then gradually increase it until it's working again. It didn't work straightaway for me, I had to fit the vacuum cleaner onto the iPhone so that you don't lose any sucking power. Use your hands to form a sort of windtunnel between the vacuum cleaner and your iPhone, make sure that no air can escape between the two. Sit like this for a few minutes (this conventiently gives you time to think about how you're going to explain that one if someone walks in on you) and it should fix your problem.
    Hope this helps someone!

  • Stuck on "Dock Connector" Setting

My iTouch thinks that it's connected to the dock connector when it's not. So it won't allow headphones to work. I've tried resetting to no avail. Any ideas?

I have just come upon this problem, too.
However, it happened after I did a very specific thing to my 1st gen touch: i plugged in a fairly old Griffin iTrip to it - using the "old style" of dock connector before the iPhone and touch were released (circa 2007).
It immediately went into "dock connector" mode, and would not come out permanently. However, if I inserted headphones, it would temporarily recover and allow me to change the volume.
This is a poor work around, though.
I have not tried cleaning the port, yet, but this seems more like a compatibility issue than physical...
    Any other thoughts?

  • Dock connector problem

I have an 8GB iPod touch and I love it but I have an issue with a logitech pure fi express.
When I put the iPod on it, I have to move it around until it connects. Then when it fnally connects, if it gets bumped it disconnects. I think my iPod has a faulty dock connector. The computer cable works though because it has those little clips. What should I do? Can it be fixed?

Take a few of your cables with you.

  • Could there be something wrong with my 4S dock connector?

So a while ago my iPhone's usb cord stopped working, so I bought a new one of the same type. Then that one broke, but I found out it still charged when I plugged my iPhone in, although the lightning icon that appears next to my battery onscreen didn't appear and it charges extremely slowly (like maybe 20% an hour, 25% at best, and around 10% at its slowest - and this is when my phone is off.) One of my relatives found out the wires inside the usb cord were messed up or something, and something of the usb cord wasn't tight enough so if the cord got pulled too hard it would get mess up the cord's wires again and stop charging my phone. Even then, it still didn't charge like the way it did when I first got it (icon next to onscreen battery, quickly, etc.)  Soon enough, the cord stopped working again and I got so tired with it I just decided to buy a whole different type one. Here is the link to it: https://www.opensky.com/3d-luxe/product/iphone-4-4s-cable-usb-charger-sync-cord- 10-feet-new-steel-design-strongest-cable-on-market
This time, the icon still doesn't appear, although it does charge fairly faster than my broken ones last time (it charges about 22% in half an hour now when my phone's off). Then I tried plugging the cord into my laptop, but the usual iTunes did not appear, and my laptop notified me that the device was not working properly, and if I plugged it back in again and it still doesn't work then there may be something wrong with my device. Now I'm really confused because this cord is brand new, so how could it not work? I'm certain my laptop is working perfectly fine, so the only two possibilities that I can think of now is either the dock connector is not working for some reason, or the usb cord is not working. I really doubt the usb cord is not working, I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't.
Please help me on this. I've only had an iPhone for 3 months and it's already having so many problems.

If you have only had the phone (from brand new) for 3 months, it is covered by the 1 year limited warranty.  You should make an appointment at a genius bar to have the device examined.
