Ipad to replace Laptop

I am a college student that is considering purchasing an Ipad to replace my laptop completely is this an option? can i work all of my college needs on just an Ipad? please be honest

If you don't have a computer (be it a Desktop or a Laptop), the iPad would not be enough. You need a computer to sync your iPad (Music, Movies, iOS Updates, etc.)
If you have a Desktop, you could use your iPad for almost everything you need to do "on the go". If you have an iMac, for example, you could use the iMac's Keyboard (or any wireless keyboard) to type on the iPad. The iPad is great for doing/viewing/creating documents and presentations as well as for taking notes on class(some apps even let you add voice notes)
For longer documents, however, I would use the computer. Also in case the iPad doesn't open a file you need to read for school, you could do so on you desktop or laptop at home.
Reading on the iPad is great and with the new retina display, it will be even better. Plus, it is lighter and faster to boot up(just leave it on Standby) so it's great for quick, easy access to everything.
So for reading, browsing the web, viewing/editing documents and presentations, taking notes in class, watching videos, as long as you have access to a computer at home, I'd say you do not need a laptop.
If you do not have a computer and want either an iPad or a laptop, you should go for the laptop.

  • IPad to replace Laptops

We currently have 15 Foremen on the road with Laptops.  I am looking to replace the Laptops with IPad’s if possible.  I personally have an IPhone 4S, so am somewhat familiar with the App Store, etc.
I have the following questions on how this would work.
Can I get by without having a user sync to a computer?  (The idea is to replace their laptop, not give them another device to carry around.)
Can I setup one account that I maintain to install apps?
Can the user setup their own account to load personal apps?
The IPad would only be used for email and forms update.  I currently have a menu of Excel files that they fill out information on and send them in daily via email.  I would like to duplicate that somehow to the IPad.
My plan is to purchase one for testing and then if all goes well do about 5 at a time.
    Thanks in advance.

So says you. The phrase, ”post-PC era,” was stated during an iPad event not a Mac event.
So if Apple and all the rest of the tablet making tech companies are not working to give these devises even the most basic PC functionality, then we are talking about an expensive toy.
In fact, there is no reason not to give iOS devices the same basic bluetooth functionality as a cheap flip phone or your most inexpensive PC.
    So says you.
If you do a Google search on "apple ipad laptop replacement, you find thousands of hits where this claim is made, but not a single one is attributed to Apple.  Most are pure speculation from tech blog geeks, youtube misfits, and uninformed people, most of whom later concluded that the iPad is NOT a laptop replacement.
Tim Cook used the phrase "Post-PC era" in introducing the new iPad, but in context, he was referring to portable and mobile devices for viewing content, surfing the web and checking email, specifically the iPad, iPod touch, and iPhone.  Steve Jobs said essentially the same thing in several interviews prior to his passing.  You are clearly projecting a different meaning on the phrase "post-PC era", and reading into it things that were never intended.
The facts are that the iPad DOES perform basic PC functionality.  It handles email, calendar, and web browsing functions very well.  It handles maps, photos, videos, games, etc. etc. etc.  Not only are these "basic" functions, many would argue that they are advanced functions, some of which PCs cannot do.  And yes, it does print using Airprint or another app.  So your statement that the iPad somehow lacks "even the most basic PC functionality" is simply factually incorrect.

  • Ipad that can replace laptop?

I am not sure if this discussion was answered before or not.
I am just wondering if Apple have any plans to come up with an ipad that can replace laptops. Below are some of the features that should be available in that ipad for the purpose
    1. Ability to synchronize the laptop(need not be macbook) with the ipad.
    2. Ability to purchase/download business software(s) like MS Office, Visio, Project and outlook
    3. Ability to attach/remove a typing pad as per the requirement
    4. Flash software would be an advantage
    5. USB/Flash drive port
    6. Larger storage than 64 GB
To make it simple, something like MS Surface Pro 3.
    Thanks,
    San Bhu

At this time, iPad can only read USBs for the purpose of photos.
You're right, MS doesn't have an app for Visio that I can see, but if you're willing to look for an alternative: http://alternativeto.net/software/microsoft-visio/?platform=ipad.
If you want the iPad to have a built-in USB port for reading all files, you can let Apple know your suggestion at: http://apple.com/feedback/ipad.html.

  • IPad to replace my laptop

I'm considering getting an iPad to replace my laptop. The main issue I have is knowing how I will backup all of my iPhoto. Obviously there is an adaptor for iPad to import photos from a camera but I don't expect even a 64gb iPad to be able to hold all of my iPhoto library.
If I was to get a Time Capsule would my iPad automatically backup to this? Can I then view the entire library from my iPad?
I have a Macbook Pro but I don't want to have to always backup to the Macbook Pro. I'd like my iPad to completely replace this.

You can store all your pictures in the cloud.

please please can some one tell me how do you charge ur ipad with ur laptop. it doesn't chage wen I put use the wire. only charges when I plug the socket in. Iv never used an ipad b4 so don't really know much. Hope some one knowz.

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • What is better to use for school, an ipad or a laptop?

Hi, I'm in highschool and I am into technology. I use an hp laptop for school, but its kind of big and takes a minute to turn on. It seems like the iPad would be faster ad easier to carry around. I was wondering which is better for taking notes during class, iPad of laptop?
    Thanks

Something with a real keyboard, so if you get an iPad to replace the laptop, also get a Bluetooth keyboard to use with it.

  • Installing iTunes on a replacement laptop

I've just replaced my 6 year old laptop and want to install iTunes on it - but an exact copy of what I had on the old laptop so I don't have to reload all of my songs (I have hundreds). Is there a simple way to transfer my current iTunes Library to the replacement laptop?

This is an extract from one of our senior participant; hope he doesn't mind me reproducing it here
    Syncing with new computer
    1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.

  • IPad vs. Laptop

I have a question for the iPad users...... Can the iPad totally replace the need for a laptop? Especially if you just surf the net, Facebook and check your email.

For your uses I would say yes.
But bear in mind, you still need a computer to activate your iPad initially. Also, it's better IMO to still have a computer, because when you sync your iPad, it is backed up.
Bear in mind though re Facebook. You won't be able to play any of the games on it (if they are flash based) because the iPad does not support flash nor is ever likely too. In the near future I can see nearly all flash content been replaced by the newer and better HTML 5, the iPad supports HTML 5.
I have a computer and an iPad. Since getting the iPad I don't use my computer anywhere near has much, but I still use it, because there are tasks that I cannot do on the iPad, such as disk burning and other things which I find easier to do on the computer.
The iPad is superb for been able to take easily pretty much everywhere and been able to check mail, surf, play around with apps. The iPad is great for doing an instant bit of surfing, email, has there is no waiting time like there is when you use a computer, due to it's loading time.
I have no regrets getting the iPad.

  • I have backed up my ipad to my laptop prior to updating to the latest IOS and now I want to restore the backup back onto the ipad but it says there is not enough space? I have tried unticking all apps i no longer need, music etc but this still doesnt work

I have updated up my ipad2 which had the original version on it (4.??) to the latest version of IOS. Before I did this I backed up the ipad to my laptop so I wouldnt lose precious pics and videos of my baby boy.  Now that the latest version is on the ipad it is now asking me if I want to start as a new ipad or restore my backup from itunes.  So i select restore my backup from itunes and connect to itunes but it now says there is not enough space to do so.  I have a feeling it is because there are alot of pics on our ipad which i presume are all in this backup, many of which we do not need on the ipad anymore but I have no idea on how I go about deleting these pics??  And how do I find where on my laptop this backup is and most importantly the video and pics of my baby boy.

Restoring an iPad from an iTunes-generated backup should not require an Apple ID password.
Did you encrypt the iPad backup? If so, then trying to restore will require entering the encryption password.

How can I remove an incorrect Apple ID from my ipad and replace it with the correct one?

    Hello Shy guy,
    You can try this:
    1. Go to the iTunes Store or App Store
    2. Scroll down, there you will see Apple ID: "your email" (below Redeem and Send Gift)
    3. Tap on that button
    4. Tap on Sign Out
Now you should be able to use another Apple ID.

  • Is there a way to tie to iPads together so that when you turn a page with a tap on one, both iPads turn a page.  I am using the ipad to replace piano sheet music.  The challenge is that ordinary sheet music is on both a left and right page.

We are trying to use an ipad to replace ordinary paper sheet music on a piano.  When truning ordinary paper pages, it is sometimes hard to grasp one page, turn it quickly and get it to stay turned.  The idea with using an ipad is that a tap turns the page, it stays turned.  However,,,,,ordinary sheet music is on both left and right pages.  With one turn you get 2 new pages.  The ipad, being smaller results in only one page and therefore twice as many page turn taps; more taps equals less hands on the piano.  If we could tie 2 ipads together and get them both to turn the page simultaneously it would be nice.  We are trying to get used to using the ipad.  We are using ForScore app to get sheet music into the ipad; we could load one with odd pages and one with even pages.  Maybe this is getting too complicated.
Anyway to tie 2 units together
    John

No way to control one device from the other.  But, according to ForScore, you should be able to display two sheets side by side in landscape mode (2-up view)?  Not sure if that helps as it must make the actual print smaller to do so.

i tried for update but when i saw the screen its showing an arrow with a USB cable towards itunes icon, and now i'm not able to do anything, i also tried to connect ipad through my laptop but no use

That message means that you have to restore the iPad now. There was a problem with the update. So connect the iPad to your computer and restore your iPad.
You can read bout it here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
If that does not work you will need recovery mode. You can read about it here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4097
Or you can follow these Recovery Mode Instructions
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for iPad to turn off.
If you cannot turn off iPad using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the iPad turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPad. When you reconnect the USB cable, iPad should power on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the recovery mode alert that iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode.
    Use iTunes to restore iPad.

Close ... before going for a specific Cisco app ... lets find out some details:
    Host we need more details:
What is your server environment (Windows Server, or Mac OS X Server, or Linux)?
What security is implemented in your environment - as what is restricted (RDP for all or specifc credentials on all machines? Are you part of local admin group to the server you wish to connect)?
Does your environment Support CISCO IPSec connection? If so use Settings> VPN and IPSec tab to enter VPN details, if not then go with above suggestion. IF your restricted to RSA then either built in VPN settings or 3rd party app for RSA would suffice.
Finally, there are many RDP applications out there I use "Mocha RDP Light" (free minimal ads when launched not when connecting).

  • I had my iPad 2 replaced by Apple today. All my backup was iCloud and so proceeded to restore from iCloud backup point but couldn't proceed as the new iPad needed iOS 7. How can I get I get around this?

I had my iPad 2 replaced by Applestore today. On the new iPad I tried to restore from iCloud backup point but was told I was unable to do this as the new iPad needed to have the latest running system iOS 7 loaded. Is there a way I can do this so I can get my iCloud backup or do I need to go back to Applestore and get an iPad preloaded with iOS 7?

If you feel comfortable you can do the Update to iOS 7 yourself and after you have successfully done that... then Restore your iCloud Back Up.
If you are not comfortable in doing it yourself... Then go back to the Apple Store and get them to do it.
They will be Happy to assist you.

In particular, I uploaded 3 CDs at the same time, all are in my library, and all synced to the iPad - but the music from two of them are missing from the music folder. Questions are (a) where might they have gone? and (b) is there a way of "reverse loading" them back to my hard drive from the iPad? Thanks in advance!

    Hi dones49,
It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -
Locate and organize your iTunes files
If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -
    Download past purchases
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Best,
    Brett L
