Ipad used as storage for photos

How can  you transfer photo from your ipad to a usb thumb drive - (i have the connector)

It may not be supported and can't be done with the camera connection kit, but it is possible with an external wireless drive that supports usb such as the Apotop or iUSBport. You plug your drive into the device and then connect the ipad to it wirelessly. You can then transfer photos to and from a usb thumb drive.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • HT4847 Question re: storage for photos

I bought storage for photos, and yet I keep getting the notice that there is not enough available storage to take a photo. Yet, I only have taken ten photos and my settings tell me that of 15.0 GB in iCloud, I have 14.9 available. What can I do?

Keep ALL the media on one drive and TM on it's own drive. NEVER NEVER NEVER mix a backup drive with any storage. The reason being is if/when that drive crashes you will have lost all the data and backup! For the media drive you may need a high speed drive and bus. The only reason I can think of for a high speed drive would be if you put photos on it and do lots of editing on them in something like Aperture, Photoshop etc...If that does describe your needs get a 7200RPM drive AND use the fastest bus your computer has. This will probably be Firewire or Firewire 800 depending on what iMac you own. If this does not describe your needs as long you keep the media (movies, photos & music) on one drive and the TM on a separate drive you're good to go.
BTW if you haven't seen these you will find them helpful:

Is it possible to use iCloud storage for videos. I ran out of 16 gig storage on my iPad.

You can try cloud storage like Sugarsync, Dropbox or Box.com

You will not want to do that and you should just have two 5GB free accounts.
Too much risk of merging or losing data.

  • HT1338 What is the best online storage for photos. Specifically one that allows the original image quality to be downloaded should your hard storage goes belly up

What is the best online storage for photos. Specifically one that allows the original image quality to be downloaded should your hard storage goes belly up

I'd put them on an external hard drive(s) and burn them to a DVD as well (at least 2 - 3 copies on different drives/media); I prefer having control and a local solution instead of relying on a server and the possibility of someone (who shouldn't be)  downloading my work.

  • I have an iPhone with an unlimited data plan. Is there a way to go online with a wifi only iPad using my phone for access?

I have an iPhone with an unlimited data plan. Is there a way to go online with a wifi only iPad using my phone for access?

If your iPhone cell carrier allows you to use Tethering, you can turn your iPhone into a wifi hotspot, then your iPad Air can connect to that for internet access.  Not all cell carriers allow tethering without you signing up for additional fees/services.  For example, AT&T in the US still has grandfathered "unlimited" data plans, but they do not allow tethering for those plans.  With AT&T you need to switch to a Mobile Share plan (or a tiered plan if still available) to use tethering (legally).

  • Need extra storage for photos for my ipad ...

I need extra storage for my ipad to store photos on ... I have so far been looking at the Airport Time Capsule & Seagate Wireless Plus.
    Can anyone recommend any? Thanks

If you need to offload photos as you have too many, the best way is to plug the iPad into you computer running Mac OSX and dump them into iphoto.
If you want to use something by wireless, without a computer then any network connected hard disk will work much the same. You cannot use file storage directly anyway.. you need to load a file app to start with.
I think use whichever works out the cheaper for you.
Do note the TC is really not designed to do this job and if you already use the TC for Time Machine it is messy loading files onto it. This is apparently a new purchase so you are not using the TC at all..
The TC lacks a method to back itself up.. And this is one of its great weaknesses.. if the TC fails.. and they all fail at some point. How are you going to recover those photos?? From iPad you will not have the tools needed to do backups of the TC to another location.
I have no idea if the seagate has built in proper backup but I would find out.

  • Is it possible to "partition" Iphone or Ipad when syncing?  What I would like to do is set up Itunes to use say 15GB for photos 15GB for music and 15 GB for video.  Any help would be appreciated. Thx

I am using a Widows 7 PC with the latest Itunes.  I would like to alot hard disc space on my 64GB Ipad2 as follows  15GB for music, 15GB for Video and 15GB for photos. I would then like Itunes to autofill from my PC. Can this be done? The same question also applies to my Iphone4. Thanks in advance

To my knowledge the iPod can only be used as a secondary monitor since you have to boot up the Mac and turn on the secondary display. You would still need a KB and pointing device for the Mac
However, you can log into the Mini from an iOS device like an iPad using app like LogMeIn, GoTo MyPC or TeamViewer on both the Mac and the iPad. You use the touch screen on the iPad for all control of the Mac.
As you said, that would be tedious for a lot of typing but you could use a BT keyboard for the iPad.

  • My Mac is showing a very high amount of used storage for photos

    Hi guys,
I'm starting to run low on disc space and decided to see how much of my hard drive is being used for what by using "About This Mac". My Macbook Pro is showing that I have used 164.62GB on photos. I've checked and my iPhoto library (which stores all my personal pictures) is only 68.66GB. I get that there will obviously be more spaced used on my HDD for pictures other than my iPhoto but I really can't see how that totals nearly 100GB. Is there likely to be an old iPhoto library file lurking in a folder somewhere?
I'm pretty sure I'm also not using as much space for movies as well but this is nearly no where as much of a concern.
Any help on what could be causing this would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

About this Mac is a very crude measure of anything. That will include just about every image, icon, UI element on your Mac. It's so vague as to be meaningless.

  • HT5527 But what on earth can I use this storage for?

I got the email this morning. It's somewhat annoying that I've just signed up for iTunes Match and will have to pay for that when I could have opted to just send my music to the cloud, which I thought was going to be reduced to 5gb.
So I'd like to find out what I can use this free space for.
When I had an iDisk I used it to store work files so they were easily available at work and at home. I also put treasured photos and documents for the family to see there. I often used it to store scores of music I've written to add another layer of security in case everything got lost this end in case we got struck by lightening or something. I'm not sure how much of that I'll be able to put in iCloud storage now.
So far I'm using it for email and calendar and I'm using a very small amount of space. I've paid for iTunes Match, which is considerably bigger. Perhaps I could put my audio books in there? I'm still not going to use 55GB.
The only real use I can see for it would be to email all my important documents such as the music notation scores to myself - and then I suppose I will have put them into the cloud. But if I'm going to lose it all in a year's time I'm not sure I want to go to all that trouble.
Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

So really, they can offer us 55GB of space for a year, which seems a very generous offer given that they are not charging well over £100 as I used to pay for my maxed out iDisk. But there's probably not a single user who is going to fill 55GB with the kind of documents that can be stored there. Only photographs could fill that space; and even then it would take a massive amount of those to use up 55GB.
And having found every last word processing document and photograph I can lay my hands on to fill the space, would it be worth it if I knew that at the end of the year I'd have to remove it all and back it all up somewhere else?
One wonders why they bothered! It is no replacement for my iDisk. Now if we have a flood or a fire, I've lost the lot, no matter how much backing up I've done. Unless I turn to DropBox, that is. Maybe I will. What Apple has done is handed me a huge trunk and told me I can keep only unboxed cufflinks and earrings in it for a year, while I'm desperately looking around for somewhere to put my boots!
Thanks for the comments, guys. I think you'll agree with me that this is a statement of bewildered disbelief rather than a problem and that there's no solution unless Apple changes the way iCloud works.

  • Can you use home sharing for photos?

I just installed the app Remote by apple. It's for home sharing with iTunes or Apple TV. Can it be used for photos as well? I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8.

  • Storage for photos doesn't work

Photo storage kept telling me I was out of memory on my phone so I purchased more. The phone will barely let me store 60 photos even after I purchased the extra. Storage.
    Thanks

You can't buy extra storage for you phone.  If you purchased extra iCloud storage that will not increase the capacity of your phone.  To create more free space on your phone you'll have to delete something on it now.
