IPad vs portable HDD

I'm wondering if the iPad will be able to read portable HDD in the future ? That's the only feature missing for me to buy one...

See this article, and you can look for others by searching Google as I did.

  • How do I install 3Q portable HDD External U275-BS on my MacBook Pro 10.7.2

HI there - I just bought a 3Q portable HDD External U275-BS in Russia and it won't let me copy to it. Any suggestions? Thanks! Lorrain

Most likely the drive is formatted in Windows NTFS, which Macs don't normally write to (only read) without extra software. You should be able to reformat the drive with Disk Utility. If you only use it on the Mac, reformat it in Mac OS GUID.

  • Can I install windows 7 on my portable HDD from my Mountain lion? and how i need to do it?

Can I Install Windows 7 on my portable HDD from Mountain lion ? And how i need to do it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Because of a Microsoft restriction, Windows can't be installed on an external drive (there are workarounds, but you need Windows). Apart from that, Boot Camp only works with the hard drive where you have installed OS X, so you can't use it to install Windows on an external drive

  • Why is my portable HDD no longer readable?

My WD portable HDD is no longer readable on my computer. Whenever I connect it, an error message pops up saying "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". It was working fine this morning and I've never had any issues with it before. It contains a lot of documents that will take quite literally hours to copy across to another computer in order to 'repair' or 'reformat' or whatever it is that it asks me to do. I've opened disk utilities and the repair disk button isn't available, nor is the verify disk button. I've restarted the computer to no avail an have tried both USB ports. I've also checked the cable that connects the portable HDD to the computer. Nothing has changed. I also have another portable HDD of the same brand (slightly older) which is working fine. The only thing I can think of that has changed is that Time Machine did it's back up. Could it have done something? PLEASE HELP!

I've just tried it in other computers (admittedly they run Windows, but I'm 99% sure that I formatted it so that it could be used on both Windows and Mac), and tried it with a different cable that was working with another HDD. Nothing. Which leads me to believe that it might be the device itself. It's not that old though and it was just sitting on my desk so I don't understand how or why it's no longer working. If anyone knows of a way to remove/back up the disk I would greatly appreciate it. I'll be devastated if I loose all the files on it.

  • Transfering iTunes from small Portable HDD to 1TB HDD - Losing ratings etc.

I have a 40gb portable HDD, this ran out of space so I purchased a 1TB portable HDD as I do a lot of design work and Music is outgrowing the 40gb HDD.
After transfering it all over, little explaination marks flag up every time you click on a song.
I have used iPod Rip before when I moved my iTunes from iBook G4 to 40gb HDD for the same reason but lost all info like rating songs (which I cant be bothered to re rate 3000 songs!!) and play counts and things like that.
Any suggestions before I permantly delete iTunes from my 40gb HDD?

    hi nicholas,
if you got exclamation point before your songs it is because the reference link between your iTunes library and your song files have been broken most probably because of an incorrect way to move your songs.
you must think that your iTunes library is simply a database that contains reference link to where your songs files are located. if you move your files, the reference link contains in the iTunes library will no longer find your file and iTunes will show you an exclamation point to show you this situation. therefore, I beleive that what you have done was to move your songs using the finder without correcting your iTunes library.
in the following article you will find the procedure to move your song files; http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
depending of what you have done so far, you may possibly put back your song in the correct location using the finder and then follow the procedure described in the above article.
also note that all your rating and playcount are located in the iTunes library file.

  • Can't copy pictures to a portable HDD

    Hi,
I am trying to select multiple pictures to copy across to a portable HDD. It will let me copy single pics, but when I want to copy multiple pics it won't let me do it because it says 'MyPicture.jpg' is busy. Well, I have thrown that file into the trash and emptied it, but it still won't let me.
    Any ideas?
    Thx,
    David

What format is the external HDD?
    On a hunch, try this...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, when that completes...
    Reset Launch Services...

    Reboot.

  • Got new iMac, can't import iPhoto library from portable HDD

    Hi all,
I just bought a refurbished mid 2012 iMac.  I had kept my iPhoto library on a portable HDD.  When I tried to import the pictures I was first told the files needed to be updated for the new version of iPhoto.  It read it would take a few hours so I let it work overnight.  The next morning, none of the pictures were imported.  In iPhoto there looked like there were event boxes but no images in them.  Now the iPhoto file in my HDD is greyed out so it won't recognize it anymore.
Any ideas what to do.  Got 11 years worth of pictures on there and I don't want to have to pull out all those CDs and do the red eye correction and rotating.
    Mike

There's no importing involved in upgrading.
What format is the external disk?

  • Portable hdd format compatible with windows?

Hi. I have formatted my 320 gb portable hdd to os extended journal format but its not compatible with windows.
If I choose MS DOS (FAT) will it be at optimum performance with my mac?
    please guide me.

    Hi
MS DOS (FAT) is a fully compatible format, which will work with both Mac and PC. However, you won't be able to write files which are larger than 4GB.

  • Time capsule versus Lacie portable HDD storage. Which one?

Not sure what to get. I am looking at either a Lacie rugged 1tb or time capsule. I have a MBP 15 " 2010 i7 and I have mobile internet access. I want to back up my computer with a HDD the Lacie is portable and cheaper. My house is very small so I thought a portable HDD would be better. No to sure at moment any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Some folks do online backups, but as "secondary" backups only.  They're quite slow, depending on your upload speed.
They're so slow that many of the services actually ship you a portable drive, so you can do your first backup to it, then ship it back so they can load it onto their servers.  Then you "catch up" via the internet.
When you need to restore individual files, it's usually much faster since most internet connections have much faster download speeds.  But even a relatively-fast connection will take quite a while to do a full system restore.

  • Moving my Final Cut Pro X events and projects to portable HDD, want to access them from both my iMac and MacBook Pro.

I recently moved my video files over to a portable HDD and performed a clean Lion installation on the iMac. Instead of moving my files back, I want to keep them on the portable HDD so that I can not only access them via the iMac but also on my MacBook Pro when I'm out of the house. How do I go about setting this up?

Simple as that? Thanks, guess it wasn't at complicated as I expected.

  • Imation 2.5"Portable HDD 500GB unable to mount?

Hi, I've got an Imation 2.5" Portable HDD 500gb, and everytime i try to mount it, it says:
Any idea how I can fix this?

Thats an old one there. As I recall it contains a Western Digital HD.   What computer did you originally use it on?
was it formatted for Mac or Win dos?
Does the HD spin up?  IF NOT then you have a bad SATA connector bridge between the HD
If it spins up you can still have a bad SATA bridge.
Does it work with the original computer (PC?)   If so retrieve data thru that option.
If the SATA card is dead, youd have to crack open your HD and remove it to put in an enclosure or a HD dock
HOWEVER as i recall that old HD has a soldered on SATA bridge, in which case its bad news indeed.
    No secondary backup?

  • Setting mac origional HDD after making portable HDD default

Hi , I've recently had problems with my HDD so I made a portable HDD my default and wiped my macbook's built I one , but I don't know how to get back to my original HDD and I cannot start my macbook without  plugging in the portable one.

Did you install OS X on the internal drive? When a drive fails to appear in Disk Utility it usually means it's dead.
Otherwise, you need to put an OS on the internal drive. For example, you can clone your external to the internal. However, you need a Recovery HD on the external if it has Lion or later. The basic procedure is:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external backup drive. Destination means the internal startup drive.
If you are using Lion or later the above is the same except you must first boot from the Recovery HD:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Source means the external backup drive. Destination means the internal startup drive.

  • Difference between portable and non-portable HDD

I'm about to purchase an external hard disk drive. Is there any difference in functionality or reliability between a portable HDD and a non-portable drive? I like the size and portability of the smaller drives but it doesn't really need to be portable. The drive will be connected to my iMac for Time Machine backups, so it will be good if it can power down when not in use.

In general, non-portable drives require external power and use 3.5” drive mechanisms. Portables use 2.5” mechanisms and can be powered by the USB, Firewire or Thunderbolt bus (draining a laptop’s battery). Non-portable drives can be had in larger capacities.
I suggest you use something other than Time Machine. Try SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner since they’ll create bootable clones. You can’t boot from a Time Machine backup. TM is ok as a secondary or tertiary backup, but I’d never trust it as my only backup.

  • USB portable HDD connected to HH3

Hi, i have a GoFlex Portable HDD just wanted to know if its actually possible to have it constantly connected to the HH3 an access it via laptop when ever i want to, as ive just tried connected it now and its showing up on the HH3 settings page but not showing up on my laptop to access. It is powered by the USB aswel. Hope someone can help. I thought it would of been 'plug n play' without having to set anything else up unless my HDD isnt compatible

As I can't be bothered buying a full blown NAS, I have a 500GB external HDD (formatted to NTFS but FAT32 also works - tested to confirm) connected to the Homehub 3's USB port and it works fine. I solely use it for music though so as Keith has mentioned if you want to stream movies/TV shows (especially HD content) you might be better with a proper NAS as the USB connection and the processor on the Homehub might just not be able to cope with all that extra traffic
Also - if it isn't showing up when you try to map it on your laptop, switch it off for a minute then back on again and it should appear. I almost put the thing through the window trying to figure out what was going on and a simple reboot did the trick!

  • Use iPad as portable mac with Tiger?

I need a walk around the house using an adjunct to my Mac Mini (2005 pre intel)  I now sit too long typing on the desktop keyboard and blood accumulates in the 85 year old legs and feet. Being able to take whatever file is being worked on and having a means to walk to a stand up counter, or work shop table, etc
would greatly improve the circulation. I've thought would an iPad work? it would need to access applications that work in oSx 10.4.11 such as MS Office 2004, Quicken, Safari, Firefox, mail, apple works, photoshop elements, iphoto.
My setup is via a D-Link router (wired) into a Comcast Cable Modem and I would expect any connection would be either USB or FW between the portable unit.
I have an early Titanium Laptop that runs 10.3.9 but it is too heavy to lug around very much.
    Can an iPad help?

    >PS.. am having difficult time posting on the discussions since re-installing Tiger couple weeks ago. Using Safari 3.04.
when go to save this it often reverts to a blank with all I type missing. In a couple of other attempts it was not successful
    hope this one works.
You're not the only one, I'm about to give up helping here because of losing so many posts, the bloat & slowness of the new forum, & sometimes being logged out many times a day... then other days it works fine.
    >Seems like a good idea... Not familiar with that Mac.. Have any pointers?
I think it's the lightest one on the market, Apple has new ones if course...
