IPad WiFi Issues are an Apple Problem

It seems clear many are having WiFi issues. While there are some suggestions involving changes to routers, these in general are at best temporary work arounds.
1. Not everyone has any ability to change things about the router they connect with.
2. The iPad is supposed to be state of the art gear. Given that, it should be able to work at least as well as a year old laptop in the same location. If it can’t, then it had a problem Apple needs to address.
3. Not every user is a techie, so the long term solution is that Apple needs to fix the iPad to work correctly out of the box. It CANNOT require users to fiddle with routers and firmware concepts.
The best thing Apple can do now is to first admit there appears an issue here and say they plan to address it ASAP.
Ed

I understand completely and sympathise with your frustration, however this is certainly atypical of Apple.
Bear in mind these forums are the equivalent of a hospital, and as such its full of sick people who come here to get well. Just because most people here are sick, doesn't mean everyone else outside is sick as well.
Yes there are problems but your solutions/suggestions which overall are correct (its Apple to solve) I think you have too simplistic an approach viz;
1. Apple cannot stick to Open Standards if routers are not kept up to date - thats not an Apple problem. the world moves on and there is no reason why the 'bleeding edge' should be held back by dead wood or out of date firmware.
2. Agree wholeheartedy, and bear in mind the hospital analogy - 300,000 units sold on the first day and NOT 30,000 or even 3,000 people here with problems. most problems are 'how do I...'
3. We will have to disagree here - sometimes users just have to accept they need to do things and learn. If they cannot understand how wireless works, its not entirely the manufacturers problem to teach them how to set one up.
I don't really disagree much with most of what you say, but speeches are not going to accomplish much, if anything . It just distracts us helpers from solving issues.
I do agree there is a wireless issue and I have my own views on what the problem is but jumping on a thread and shouting won't solve it so I keep it to myself.
Thats all.

  • Can anyone tell me if the majority of the wifi issues are due to 10.4.8?

i.e., have many tested reverting back to .6 or .5 to see if the issue is/was resident then? Is that a possible temporary fix to the issues noted all over this board?
In case anyone wonders, my issues are similar to most others...BOTH my wifes 2.16 Core Duo and my new 2.33 C2Duo are experiencing the same issues. While at school, she cannot see any of the numerous nearby networks. I JUST got her to switch to a mac, and now this. Her old HP laptop saw about 6 or more wifi's nearby before, and most importantly her schools wifi connection. But now that she is on the mac, nothing. SOMETIMES, and I do mean only rarely a few networks will surface, but then disappear again. I decided to take my 2.33 C2Duo down there and see if the situation was the same with me...it was/is. Every now and then I might see a network or two, but not the shcools.
This in addition to dropping off my own home wifi over and over again also. I will get a connection and surf away, and then I notice that the airport icon has lost connection. I click the icon and there is my network, avail as ever, so I select it and surf again...same issue with her laptop and my step-fathers 17 inch Core Duo. We all experience the same dropped airport connection. And I can tell you it has nothing to do with idle time or sleeping. I can be surfing along and sometimes if I pause for less than a minute, the connection is lost. Btw, I also just got my step-father to switch, and while in general he is VERY happy, this is a knock-out blow to the saying "It just works." Uhm, nope it doesn't.
I have tried nearly every "trick" and tech troubleshooting idea I have come across here on the boards...I used to be a Mac tech in CA for about 5 years, working for ABC and Disney, so I think I can count myself amongst the more knowledgable Mac users out there.
So, to sum up again, can anyone tell me if they are having these issues with a version previous to 10.4.8?
p.s. BTW, I just saw the release of some EFI updates for the Mac line-up...I will update my wifes machine and let you know if anything gets better, but my 2.33 says that this update is not for this machine/isn't needed...so this EFI update doesn't resolve anything for me.
    Thanks...!
    MacBook Pro • 2.33 • 120GB/5400RPM • 2GB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Duo Mac Mini w/2GB Ram, 5g 60gb iPod...

I had issues in 10.4.7 as well as 10.4.8.
My problems occurred at the beginning of 10.4.8, then many users brought light to me using WEP, which was not working that great. I changed my connections to WPA2 and my problem has disappeared. If my problem didn't resolve the way it did, I would have mentioned it the next time I visited an apple store.
The bottom line is that assumptions, complaining, and self diagnostics don't get many people very far and bringing the problem to apple helps them know the incidence of this problem, and helps them develop a reliable solution.
Though some users have reported the "cold shoulder" when reporting Airport problems to apple... I hope you weren't one of them.

  • Apple TV & iPad wifi issues

This afternoon my Apple TV lost its connection to my wifi network and I haven't been able to get it back since. I've re-entered my password dozens of times and it either tells me my password is incorrect or that there is a problem connecting to the network.
What's strange is that my computer and my iPhone are still getting great wifi coverage on the same network.
This is also a problem I've also had for the last year on my iPad. Every now and then it just drops the connection and I can't get it back, even though my iPhone and computer are getting full bars. The only thing that seems to help is to wait a day or two and then the problem seems to go away until the next time it happens.
Could there be a problem with both my iPad and Apple TV, or could it be my Airport Express, which I'm using as a base station?
To try to fix the problem today, I tried the following:
    - updated my Airport Express firmware
    - power cycled my Apple TV, router and Airport Express three times
    - changed my Airport Express channel to 11
for a moment about an hour ago my Apple TV was able to connect to my base station, but then it lost the connection.
I should say, my Apple TV and my iPad for the matter, can always see my network, they just don't always connect when I enter in my password.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem may be?

    Hello Tvsteven,
Thank you for providing all the details regarding the Wi-Fi connection issue you are experiencing with your Apple TV.  I found an article with some steps you can take to troubleshoot an issue like this.
I recommend reviewing the full article, but the section titled "If you can see your Wi-Fi network, but you are unable to connect to it" specifically stands out to me for the situation you described:

  • IPad WiFi issue with T-Mobile & DeepBlueWireless

    Hi,
both, the WiFi-only and the 3G model definitely have an issue with at least the above mentioned two WiFi Hotspot suppliers.
I'm currently on vacation in California and neither of the two WiFis work with the iPad. The both work fine with our iPhones and with our MacBook. But not with our iPads.
Symptom: getting the necessary IP addresses from the DHCP server works fine. After that the Hotspot web pages come in fine, too. However, clicking on the "Log In" button doesn't work anymore. Nothing happens. After a while, even the "Cancel" or back buttons don't work and the web content isn't movable with a finger. Only the iPad's Home button helps.
    It's reproducable all the time.
After 1/2 hour on the phone with the DeepBlueWireless support they said I have to talk to Apple. T-Mobile answered very quickly on Twitter but they couldn't help either and said they don't support the iPad because they don't have it (AT&T has it here in the US).
Apple seems to point to the WiFi provider and their router settings. However, this fingerpointig doesn't help me, the customer.
I'm afraid, there's nothing I can do about that problem. Either Apple releases a new OS 3.2.1 with a fix for that problem or the WiFi providers like T-Mobile tweak their router settings to make them compatible with Apple's specifications. Both can last long.
    Bad for the customer!
    Anyone else having these problems?

Thx for the tips. However, my experience is that Apple has a huge problem here (which they already kind of admitted).
During our 3 weeks vacation I was almost NEVER able to connect to the WiFi networks the hotels provided. Be it T-Mobile or other suppliers it's always the same problem. The technical connection with the network works (the iPad gets IP addresses, those networks are open and need no WEP/WPA/WPA2 password). But when the Login page from the access point appears, after entering username & password and pressing the Login button, nothing happens anymore. Especially the indeterminate progress indicator in the status bar doesn't start whirling and the Login page becomes unresponsive. Even the Cancel button from the iPhone OS (not on the HTML Login page) doesn't work, I have to press the iPad's Home button.
None of the known workarounds worked (display brightness etc.)
Waiting for the firmware update ...

  • IPad WIFI Issue similar to iPhone one that has gone unaddressed

Users have been heavily pushing concern over WIFI disconnecting/invisibility behavior on the iPhone and that has gone without response from Apple for months. One wonders if they are dealing with the same issue on the iPad.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1648395&tstart=0
    ~ M.

Note the word similar and not identical in the title folks...
iMac 24", MacBook Air, Macbook all connected to a Time Capsule and flakey WIFI happens off and on with my iPhone and my wife's iPhone. You can also see that many other users have that same experience and like the iPad it manifests itself with low bars, failed to find network, failed to connect to network, invalid password messages, etc...also consistent with what people are reporting on the iPhone.

  • Ipad wifi issues. Someone help!!!

    Hi,
The maximum download seed I get from my iPad mini retina is almost half that of my iPhone and macbook. My ISP gives me 60mbps internet, however i only get around 30-40 on my macbook air and iPhone 5c and this tends to fluctuate to lows of 10. But on my iPad I only get around 10-15 average this can go up to 40 but rarely does.
I know my wi-fi router is the bottleneck as always get 60mbps download when on ethernet. It is a stock CBN cable modem router literally in the same room as where i use my iPad, and I also live in a building with 15 other routers from the same ISP running on 2.4ghz. Could it be interference or compatibility issue with the router and the iPad?
    All software has been updated.
Any help would be thoroughly appreciated

    1. Some people have reported slow syncing with anything but the iPad's own USB cable (e.g. using a US cable from an iPhone/iPod). Try different cables
    2. More work - disable iTunes syncing completely, then re-enable a bit at a time, e.g. one movie at a time, one playlist at a time, one photo album at a time. There are periodic reports of syncing issues caused by a bit of media that's been corrupted, and this (tedious) approach allows you to identify where the problem might be.
    3. If that fails, do a clean restore back to factory settings, then progressively re-enable syncing as above.
    Hope this helps

  • IPad Wifi issue

    Hi everybody,
Never tried this Forum and thought to give it a go...because,
I still have a problem to connect to the internet with my iPad after the update to 4.2.1 (had the same issues with the previous system)
I am working in Ethiopia and use a USB-Dongle to establish the internet connection with my MacBook Pro and share the connection (System Preferences/Sharing/Internet Sharing) and it works perfectly well with my iPhone4 and colleagues computers and iPhones.
My iPad however finds the network and has a good signal but as soon as I try to open the internet I have a window opening telling me I don't have internet access. Anybody has the same or a similar problem?
Have tried to reset the network settings on the iPad, restarted it, created various networks with and without password restriction, removed and reinstalled the USB-Dongel but nothing worked.
    Anybody any ideas or advice?

I have just received an IPAD. I must confess that it is the most frustrating piece of equipment I have ever interfaced with. After reading all the people comments and tricks and tried probably most of them I am now tired of reseting the equipment. Is there no way we can have the product specialists involved to deal with the wireless issue. Or id it a bug. I have a billion router and have loaded the new operating system and hoped that it would deal with the wireless issue. But this was just wishfull thinking. It sees and connect to the wireless network but I am unable to access the internet!!!! I am very frustrated. If someone can provide me with a logical approach I would appreciate it. Most of the time it seems to be trial and error (WHen I downloaded the manual only to find that its broken!!!!

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • IPad WiFi Connection Problems - WiFi Symbol Appears With Full Bars but I Don't Get A Checkmark?

I was using the iPad one day and then all of a sudden it stopped connecting to the internet. The network at this hotel is very good and I've asked them about their router so it is not the router's problem.
I go to the Settings and tap on Wi-Fi then I tap on the hotel network. After a few seconds, it says the network name beside the Wi-Fi tab and it gives me the WiFi symbol showing 3 bars. But then I never get the checkmark or tick saying everything is connected. I try going online and it says the iPad is not connected to the internet. I've tried an iPhone and it connected and got a checkmark in a few seconds. I've talked to the front desk and he took out his phone and showed me that he could connect, he even opened a page without any problems at all.
I've been trying to find a solution for this for a long time. I've been searching Google over and over again. I turned Airplane Mode on for 1 minute, I've tried Resetting my Network settings, I've tried forgetting the network and reconnecting again, I've tried removing all restrictions from the iPad, I've rebooted the iPad A LOT, etc.
So this is my problem for people who don't want to read the whole message:
    1. I can't connect to the internet with the iPad
    2. It shows the WiFi symbol saying its connected but I never get the checkmark or tick.
    3. It's not the router problem.
    4. I've tried other networks and it doesn't work. It just keeps on showing that loading circle right beside the network name.
    5. Do any of you know what this problem is? Or do you have a solution?
Thank you for reading this and have a great day

Since you are in a hotel, some of these are not applicable.

  • My iPad's WiFi issue

    Hello all,
I purchased a 16GB iPad this last sunday, and I love it. There's only one problem, and I don't believe it's the same as the other iPad WiFi issues.
My iPad will randomly disconnect from wireless networks, but when randomly disconnecting, it causes the router it's connected to to drop all wireless connections. At my girlfriend's house, it'll knock her PC and my MacBook Pro off the wireless network if my iPad loses the connection. Which is troublesome.
It does the same exact thing at my house. It'll drop all the wireless connections at my house if my iPad suddenly disconnects.
Anyone know what's causing this? I've tried this with a WPA network and an unsecured network, with the same results.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Brand New iPad Mini WiFi ISSUES

So I bought my iPad Mini 32gb a week ago and I've been using it eversince with my house's wifi. I recently updated it to iOS 6.1.3 and a couple of days after I started having WiFi issues. So I connect to my wifi and use it as usual, but after 5 minutes of using it the internet stops working eventhough it still shows the 3 bars of internet on the top left corner next to iPad. To fix this I have to turn off my iPad every time. I am trying to see if there is a solution or if I will have to send it to the apple repair center or change it for a new one for 40 bucks. I really need internet on it so please help. ( IT IS URGENT.)

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • IPad Wifi intermittent connection issues

    Hi Folks,
I combed through the forum to see if anyone else has reported this issue. WOW, I was surprised at the wide range of general Wifi problems. Although many, many wifi issues are listed, I did not find a post already listing one.
My Wifi seems to work great on first glance, but when using the iPad for more than 5 minutes the issue becomes noticeable. This occurs while doing pretty much anything. I notice it the most when web surfing and reading books in iBooks. The wifi signal indicator in the status bar drops off to nothing, usually just for 10 seconds or so, then it reconnects. Sometimes it takes longer and at which time a little blue dialog box appears that says "Connecting..." Then it connects and life goes on. Rince and repeat 5-10 minutes later.
Now, I have a feeling it might be something with my Airport Base Station Extreme (ABSE) and here is why: My wife also has an iPad, and the same thing happens to her. It's not an extremely old ABSE, as it is "Extreme" running 7.4.2. I have tried several different settings on the ABSE including reverting to default settings and simply setting it up again with the most basic settings.
So, I am unsure if this problem is caused by the iPad or the ABSE, but either way, it is annoying. Was just wondering if others had experienced this and how they may have solved it. Judging by the wide range of serious wifi issues listed on this forum, it seems to be that Apple has some serious work to do on Wifi in general and maybe all these issues will be resolved in an update.
    TIA
    Lintila

I have relatively the same problem and a somewhat similar setup as you (airport extreme), but there are a few differences (for one, my wifi signal icon just disappears instantly and then the connecting dialogue box comes on). Haven't figured it out yet but I can add a couple things I have noticed. First, when it disconnects from my wifi, if I press the sleep button to turn the screen off and then press the home button to turn it back on and swipe the slider, the wifi is instantly connected back again. Second, for me, I notice it only occurs in 2 specific locations in my house and nowhere else...when I am laying on the couch and when I am laying in bed...hmmmm, maybe the gods are telling me not to get too complacent with my iPad. ;O) There are other locations in the house that are further from the base station and I don't have this problem so range is not the problem. And this problem only occurs periodically for me (maybe once or twice a day if that) so it is not too much of a pain. If it occurred often like it is doing for you, I would be a little more irritated. I will keep an eye out and will post back if I learn anything. For now, I am going to assume that this is just a typical kink in a new product that will eventually iron itself out on its own just as has happened in years past with various bugs in other devices.
