IPad with wifi only cannot send sms or mms to non apple users. Operating system is 8.1.3

I am using an iPad 2 with iOS 8.1.3. I was told that with this operating system, I would be able to send sms or mms to non-iso users. I was able to do so when I originally upgraded to 8.1.3, but am no longer able to send. The person's name comes up in red and there is an exclamation point.

An iPad cannot natively send an SMS. The SMS text protocol sends its data within the voice channel spectrum of a cell phone voice connection. So, only a cell phone can actually send SMS texts, and only over a cellular voice connection.
If you were doing it before, you must have been using an app. There are apps that will allow you to send SMS texts via cellular providers SMS-email gateways, e.g. as an email to [email protected]

  • IPhone6 is not sending or receiving texts from non-Apple users, except when in Group texts. I've tried the various fixes on the main support page to no avail. Any ideas?

Have you contacted your carrier to make sure there's no issues with your account?

  • I cannot send a picture message to non apple devices

I have an iPhone 5s. The issue with messaging is that I can send iPhone users pic messages, and them to me (with wifi or data on) but non iPhone users can send me a pic, which I receive, but I cannot send a pic to them.  I can text to non iPhone users fine, it's just the image that won't go through.
Obviously I can use Apples service, but obviously not Verizon's? And I don't mean their app.
Be aware that I have done a network reset and have checked to make sure that MMS is turned on and on top of that I have 4 addresses that are stored for sending and receiving.
    Thank you!

I want to ensure you're able to send and receive, picture messages from non iPhone users as well as iPhone users!
When did this problem begin?  Have you been able to send picture messages to other non iPhone users in the past?  Do you get an error message when you attempt sending a picture message?  Please let me know so that I can further assist.  Thanks!

    @ Gypsygypsy,
You will need to have location services on for maps and the other apps that you require location settings for.
Settings : Privacy : Location Services
    I hope this helps

  • I have a new iPad with wifi. When I send messages I can see my sons and my husbands but not my phone number.  We all have an iPad and all use the same apple ID as iPad the bill.  How can I remove their numbers and add mine?

Add another e-mail account to your messages, so people could reach you on that e-mail from messages. As soon as you are online (if you have wifi only iPad) you are able to send and receive messages. i.e. your son can send you a messages from his iPhone addressing it to your (that additional) e-mail address.

  • Cannot send SMS only imessages?

I updated my iPhone 4 to the new iOS 6 and I cannot send SMS only imessages

Sending as SMS to a non-iOS phone is enabled by default as long as SMS is provisioned by your carrier.
Settings > Messages > Send as SMS > ON is required if you want to SMS to an iOS device which has iMessage enabled but fails to connect.
Settings > Messages > Show Subject Field > irrelevant to whether SMS or iMessage is used, ony if you want a subject field sent with the message.

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

You have to locate acessible WiFi networks. Most major hotels now have WiFi.

  • What is the best option for tethering my IPhone 4s with my iPad? (the iPad is wifi only)

#1. Understand that if you switch carriers, you can NOT take your existing iPhone with you. It won't work. You will need to purchase a new one.
#2. Your only choices are Sprint and Verizon. Decide who has the better coverage in your area. Keep in mind that you will NOT be able to get simultaneous voice and 3G data on either of these, as their CDMA networks do not support it. The U.S. T-Mobile network is not supported and is not fully compatible with the iPhone as it operates on a rarely used frequency compared to the rest of the world.
#3. What in the world are "niners"? Do you mean you want to be able to keep your existing "phone numbers"? If so, that should be no problem. Most numbers in the US are now portable.
#4. Consider WHY you want to switch. If the issue is really price, you're not going to see much of a difference. A few dollars a month at best for comparable voice and data plans.

  • I HAVE AN IPAD 2 WITH WIFI ONLY, CAN I GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM ANY SMARTPHONE, OR DO I NEED A SPECIFIC PHONE FOR THIS?

i ave an ipad 2 with wifi only, can i get internet access from any cell phone, or do i need a specific phone or type of phone

I received an iPad 2 for Christmas (the 1st Apple item I've ever owned!) and own a Nokia N95 8GB mobile (that's pretty much on its last legs/ready to die any day).
On the Nokia I've got 2 apps (downloaded from/via Nokia's 'Ovi' app store): JoikuSpot & HandyWi. Both are the free versions.
I've not used HandyWi much - if at all - but JoikuSpot has been great. Basically, it creates a wifi hotspot (as pjl123 mentioned) in a couple of straightforward steps, and allows a few devices to be connected. It displays who/what is connected at a given time - so you can check if the guy having coffee behind you is piggybacking your hotspot or not! - data packets sent received etc.
The paid version has the benefit of allowing you to secure the hotspot and other security features.  Their website is www.joiku.com, FYI.
Given how slow behind the 8 ball Nokia has been, their phones are getting cheaper and cheaper - given Joiku's meant to work with Nokia S60, Symbian ^3, Maemo, Meego & Sony Ericsson S60, this might be a cost effective option.
Ps. Ah! One more thing - Joiku's website specifies that 3G must be used; that WAP will not work. Good luck, enjoy!

  • Cannot send SMS with iPhone 5

Hi I have purchased a iPhone 5 from Hong Kong and I am using it in china. All works well except that I cannot send SMS (still can receive them)... I have contacted the apple support but I have no solution till now. I also asked China Unicom for help but they cannot find the problem... More over the activation of message and FaceTime doesn't : I can use iMessage and FaceTime but on settings the activation doesn't work. Did anyone have similar problem and was anyone able to find the good solution ?

Hello, I also have the same problem. My iPhone 5 is a from Hong Kong too! My iMessage doesn't work as well as FaceTime also. It keeps saying waiting for activation. I use china unicom too, tried contacting them but they couldn't solve the issue. But it many cases when I change my SIM card or insert mine to another phone , it suddenly activates. This is really frustrating because I can't check my credit balance at all or send urgent messages to people.
    Anyone with a good suggestion?

  • CANNOT send SMS messages with ADDRESS BOOK on POWERBOOK using iPHONE

I cannot send SMS messages with my address book or dial phone numbers using my Powerbook via the iPHONE.
Previously, with my Sony Ericson phone, I could do both. It's very useful, when you are at your laptop, to use your computer keyboard to send SMS text messages back and forth rather than using the clumsy small keys on a phone.
    Can someone help?
Is there something I am missing?

You are not missing something here and no one here can help you. This is not an included Bluetooth profile with the iPhone at the present time anyway.
If you purchased your iPhone within the last 14 days, you can return it for credit less a 10% restocking fee and if not, here is Apple's feedback link for the iPhone.
