IPad won't shut down.  Notes will not open

iPad2 6.0 - will not shut down.  Screen goes dark when pushing both buttons, but the red arrow slide bar does not appear.  Apple logo reappears & opens password screen.
Notes closes immediately after opening.

Try a reset:
1. Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together) for about 10 seconds
2. Until you see the Apple logo (very important)

iPad won't shut down or restart. Apple flashes on and off. How can this be fixed?

My ipad also does not shut down. I've tried to reboot a million times (holding down the home and power buttons simultaneously). I've tried resetting everything (after successfully backing up on iCloud). I tried the remote reboot (backing up ipad on iCloud, then on a separate computer, log on to iCloud, locate your device, clear all, reboot everything). Nothing worked. Took the ipad to the tech dept at the store, and they said its a mechanical failure of the power button, either the sensor or spring. Without the extended warranty, costs $250 to fix, because the screen is glued down to the machine. With the warranty, they would have replaced it for free. Ugh. My ipad is 1.5 years old. It would have been covered. But it shouldn't be so easy to damage! Outrageous that ipads are so glitchy at this price point. Outside techies can fix, but the machine could be damaged because of the way it's made.
Another option the techie at apple told me about, which won't shut down the ipad but will take it to the locked home screen, is go to Settings, General, Accessibility, under physical and motor, turn on the Assistive touch. That adds a button to the screen. Select Device, then Lock, and that takes you straight to the black screen. Not a total power down but maybe it burns through the battery less.

  • Ipad won't shut down, blank screen

Ipad(gen2) won't shut down,  Blank screen and shows working only

While the iPad is on hold the Home button and Power button at the same time for 10 seconds or so until the iPad powers down and then powers back up.  Sometimes it won't power back up and you have to hold the Power button until it comes back on.
This resets the iPad and is usually one of the first things to try when troubleshooting issues like this.

  • My ipad won't shut down properly

My ipad will not sleep nor shut down properly. When I plug it in it freezes.  Any solutions to this?

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

  • My iPad won't shut down

I wanted to do a complete power-down of my iPad (1st Generation) and press the power button along with the home button to get the slidbar. I slide the bar, and now it just gives me the spinning graphic thing.
That spinning thing has been going on for an hour now and it never shuts off. What do I do? How do I fix this?

What you are trying to do is a reboot.  To fully power your iPad down, you hold the power button until the red slider appears, then slide it to shut down.
Since all you have now is a spinning circle, I would recommend you reboot.  Press and hold BOTH the power and home buttons for about 10 seconds (IGNORE THE RED SLIDER TO SHUT DOWN) until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of both buttons and your iPad will [hopefully] restart.

  • IPad won't shut down

In just purchased iPad 2.  When I try turn off my iPad it will not close down.  My screen becomes black and the little circle continues to spin.  The only way I can get it started again I have to let the battery go dead!  Then charge it again.  This has happen to me at least four times in less then two Months.  Has anyone experience that?

If the OP marks the post as "correct" then other users will see that the issue has been resolved and they might find their own solution in the thread. It does not shut the thread down - it just lets other people know that the problem has been solved.

  • Original Ipad won't shut Down

I turned my original Ipad off, the "clock" appears and just keeps going around for over 10 minutes. What's wrong?

Hold down on the sleep and home buttons until the Apple logo appears takes about 10-15 seconds - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. The iPad should reboot this way. After it totally reboots, try to shut if off again with the red slider bar.

  • My iPhone 4s 5.01 loses wifi and won't shut down and can't open settings.

This is crazy. iPhone 4S running 5.01.
Twice now I've lost Wifi and cold not connect. When going to open settings to check status it won't open. The screen just crashes back to the springboard.
Then trying to force a shutdown I can't. The sleep button you usually hold for 4 seconds does not do anything so I have to hold sleep and home down to force a hard reset.
Has anyone else had this happen?
I've not performed a hard reset this time but I can't leave it like this for long. Does anyone need me to do anything before I do hard reset it?
    Fred

I'm having this problem too. Exactly the same problem.
Mine is a new phone which I restored some settings to from my old 3g.
The problem has happened a dozen times and is getting more and more frequent.
What is really weird is that if you call the phone you can hear it rining on the call but NOTHING on the phone.
Getting completely hacked off with this.

  • IPad 2 won't shut down

    Hello,
Since a little time my iPad won't shut down using the red slider. The circle is rolling and rolling. A reset with both buttons does the job but it's not ideal (loading time is longer).
    Thanks

Try a reset - hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears and let go of the buttons - ignore the red slider. Let it fully start up. then try to shut down again.

I was charging and updating my mini ipad last night when it suddenly shut down and will not turn on since then. What do I do to turn it on again?

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased.

  • My Macbook Pro won't shut down or restart without forcing shut down. Hangs on grey screen. iTunes not recognizing iPod.

    HELP!!!
Here are the specs of my machine:
    2011 13.3" MacBook Pro
    4 GB Ram/320 GB HD
For the past several months my MacBook Pro refuses to shut down or restart without holding down the power button. Whenever I choose to restart or shut down the computer, it will hang on a grey screen. I have even tried letting it hang for an hour, and it still won't shut down. I notice that once in a while it will retart or shut down correctly if I had not used opened iTunes since turning it on. However, even manually closing iTunes before shutting down or restarting does not solve the problem. It seems as though it only shuts down if iTunes was not used since restarting the computer. Is this a registry error? Do I need to reinstall iTunes? I noticed this problem began happening after I uninstalled Kaspersky Virus Scanner, could that be the problem as well? Also, I cannot guarantee that the problem is only associated with iTunes. I just noticed that one of the few times it shut down or restarted correctly, iTunes coincidentally had not been used. Also, this problem started happening while I was still using Lion and has continued despite upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, whenever I update my iPod through iTunes, it won't eject properly, and a transparent icon of the iPod displays on the screen even after I have removed it from the USB port. Furthermore, the iPod will only be recognized by iTunes and will only be updated the first time I plug it in. After removing it and plugging it back in, it won't recognize or update the device unless I shut down and restart the computer. I have the latest addition of iTunes. I also have two iPods, one 80 GB Classic, and one 8 GB Nano, and I have the same problem with both.
I have AppleCare. Should I take my macbook to the genius bar?
Applications I normally use are Word, Safari, FireFox, iTunes, FinalDraft, Photo Booth, Notes, Mail, App Store, etc. No real heavy lifting.
Any feedback would be very much appreciated. :-)
    Thank you everyone!!

    I have this question too.

  • Help! While editing a photo in CS3 the program shut down and will not reopen my psd file.

Help! While editing a photo in CS3 the program shut down and will not reopen my psd file. The error message reads "cannot complete your request because of a program error" -- it is a very large file (I have been saving it all along) and I had just "flattened layers" and went to open up a new, blank photo file when it shut down. Is there anyway to get this file to open? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! (p.s. after reading a couple of similar threads, I have a feeling it's hopeless. But I'd also like to know WHY this might have happened!) Thanks in advance!

Thank you. I appreciate you taking the time to respond and for sharing the article--I did panic. Here are the details of my system:
    Model: HP p7-1247c
Processor: AMD A8-3820 APU with Radeon HD Graphics
Installed Memory: 8 GB (7.48 usable)
    System Type: 64-bit
    Windows 7 Home Premium
I am using Photoshop CS3. It seems that I can work on photos and save them. But I am unable to open them back up. I have tried saving the files as psd and tiff with the same result. The error message is:  "cannot complete your request because of a program error"
The interesting thing is that I can open up InDesign and "place" the psd file within InDesign (then export and save as a jpeg). So I don't think the files are necessarily corrupted. I uninstalled Photoshop and reinstalled it last night, but there's no change.
If you have any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Or, should I repost my question with this more complete info? Thank you!

  • My Ipad2 just shuts down and will not turn on. Rebooting does not help. He switched on when I start charging it. In this case, the battery is charged.

My Ipad2 just shuts down and will not turn on. Rebooting does not help. He switched on when I start charging it. In this case, the battery is charged.

Standard troubleshooting steps in the following order:
    1. Reset: Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the apple logo, then release. Ignore the slide to power off.
    If no change, continue:
    2. Restore your phone from a backup, note: if the problem is related to corrupt data, while this will restore a fresh OS, it will also restore the problem.
    If no change, continue:
    3. Restore as a "new" phone in itunes & re-sync your content. All saved data will be lost.
If no change, make an appointment at an Apple store.
