Iphone 4 powers on at mains, but shuts off when connected the computer

Good Morning,
I have an iphone 4 that has been dropped, and the screen broken, the buttons and screen still works however. The phone will power on when on the mains, but when it comes on the network just searches, the wifi option is greyed out, and the bluetooth option just searches when selected. Everything else works on the phone but If you remove it from the mains the phone dies instanlty.
If I connect it to a laptop then the charging battary symbol comes up, and eventually the apple logo follows but it then promptly dies as if the charge were being pulled. The comptur does not show the phone in the driver list, nor does itunes pick it up while connected. I have tried uninstalling itunes to see if it is that programme that is diverting the power from the phone, but it had no effect.
I have tried holding the top and middle button on the phone to do a reset, and it goes to the apple logo, but then the phone just comes back on as mentioned above. I have also tried putting another sim card in the phone to see if it is that that is damaged, but again no joy.
Now I am not trying to salvage the phone, I just want it to connect to some form of data transfer so that I can salvage as much as I can off the phone, then it can be binned.
The only thing I can think of doing now is taking the phone apart and possibly trying a battary out of another phone, to see if that will hold its power long enough to connect to a laptop?
Can anyone think of anything I havent tried?
Any help appriciated.

No it does not work. As you clearly stated, the device has been dropped and the screen is broken. It is damaged. Replace the device.
Also, ignore ewde1 as they seems to have no clue how to follow the Terms of Use of these forums or what they truly speak of.

How do I get Mac to finish start-up...it shuts off when bar loads 1/3 of the way.

During start-up, the load bar will get about 1/3 of the way, and then the computer just shuts off. I cannot get it to reboot all of the way.
Can anyone help with this???

Hi. See if you can boot in safe mode. Hold down the shift key at startup and release a the apple logo. If it boots this way then shut down and try normal boot.You could also do a pram reset. Hold down Command/Option/P/R keys for three chimes at startup and continue boot. If you still have problems startup holding down option or option r to go to recovery and run disk permissions repair and disk repair. If non of this helps Spudnutty may have some other options for you.

I Have seen people report this issue when they try to sync their devices but in never seen it when trying to restore an unresponsive iPad. I would sguggest trying recovery mode now.

If no joy... Try a Restore...

IPad won't start.

Touch pad is not working and I cannot reset ipad. What can I do?

This morning my ipad won't start. No response at all. Have tried all the tricks mentioned on this site (various combination of holding the buttons for a long time), but no response.
Connected to the usual PC with itunes, and I can see and hear a reaction from the PC, but I get the message "Device driver not successfully installed".
Pressing the buttons while connected to the PC obviously makes some kind of reaction (connect/disconnect sound from the PC), but still the ipad will not wake up.
Have charged it for hours.
Any suggestions?

FYI, your iPad will charge much faster if you plug it directly into an electrical outlet.
When doing the reset, as Jackkcc suggests, make sure you let go of both buttons fairly promptly after the apple image appears, then wait another 10 seconds or so for the iPad to start up. Note that a reset does not alter any data or settings.

IPad won't charge using power adapter but will charge via USB

I have an iPad 1 that recently stopped charging using the power adapter. "Broken power adapter or cable" I thought and reached for a spare that I have. That didn't work either. The original power adapter however DID charge another iPad without any problems, so the problem cannot be with the adapter or cable.
Now this is the wierd bit - using the original cable plugged into my laptop I get the usual "Not charging" message but the iPad DOES charge slowly this way.
I rebooted the iPad, restarted it in recovery mode and restored the firmware, cleaned out the 30-pin connector port - all those useful bits of advice that you find on the internet but all to no avail. The iPad just will not charge using any of the many original Apple iPad charger sthat I have been able to get my hands on but will only charge on an underpowered USB port!
The 30-pin connector must work otherwise it wouldn't charge via USB. Can there be some kind of wierd internal hardware defect that might cause such behavior?
I fear that if I take a 3 year old iPad to the Apple Store they might just give me their best smile and show me the latest iPads but this old iPad works fine otherwise and I don't really want to replace it.
Anyone got any ideas?

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

If it boots reliably in Safe Mode then it is probably a software issue.
Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
Boot in Recovery Mode. (Hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys as your computer restarts.) Run Disk Utility. Click on the upper left system disk icon. Does S.M.A.R.T. report “Verified”? If not the disk is failing and will need to be replaced. Click on the icon underneath and indented to the right, usually called “Macintosh HD”. Repair Disk. It should finish normally with a green OK message. If it does not try to repair it again.
If it will not finish with the green OK message then use Disk Utility to erase the drive and then reinstall OS X. (Be sure you have a backup before erasing the disk. Post back if you need instructions on how to do that.)
If it repaired all errors and is still not booting normally, reinstall OS X.
If it is still sick after all these steps then the disk probably needs to be replaced. You can do that inexpensively and fairly easily yourself or take it to an Apple store for them to do it for you at a higher cost. If it is still under warranty or AppleCare have Apple do it for you for free. Post back if you need instructions on replacing the disk. You may want to have Apple check the health of the system and disk before replacing it yourself.

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

Took my iPad to the Apple store today and they were able to unfreeze it with a simple forced reset. This is done by pressing the Off button at the same time as you press the button on the front and hold for about 20 seconds. The new software had successfully installed and the iPad had frozen when it was starting up again after install. Not sure why this simple process can't be part of a FAQ page on the Apple site.
