IPad won't stay on unless plugged in to power source

If I have my iPad 2 plugged in to the wall it will work just fine. However, as soon as I take it off the charger it dies. The battery meter is staying at 40% regardless of how long I leave it on the charger. I was able to perform a restore through iTunes, but it didn't fix the issue.
Do I have a defective unit, or is there another fix that I have not thought of yet?

Hi,
Not sure what you mean by a charger.
Use the power adapter that came with your iPad and connect to a wall outlet. That will charge the battery the fastest or connect using the USB cable that came with your iPad connect to your computer.

So my iPhone 4S started draining battery after recent update, battery got changed and it worked perfect for 3 days, all of a sudden the phone  shut down and now won't stay on unless connected to mains... Claims its at 100% battery but thats impossible as it was at 30% before it shut down randomly.
Cannot receive any signal "searching" constantly.
Turns off as soon as removed from usb ... wont stay on connected to laptop!
    HELP!

The iPhone includes a one year warranty. If an Apple store is not nearby, you can call AppleCare and handle an exchange under warranty over the phone. The exchange will be shipped to your door - someone must sign for the delivery so if no one will be at home, have it delivered where you work. You use the same box to return the existing iPhone back to Apple. Return shipping label and tape to reveal the box incuded - call the carrier with number incuded when the box is ready to be picked up. AppleCare will request a credit card in the event the existing iPhone is not returned within 10 days after the exchange under warranty is received.
Hardware can fail - it happens, which is why there is a one year warranty.

  • I asked this about a week ago and didn't get any replies.. Please help.. My macbook will not stay on unless plugged in...

My macbook will not stay on without being plugged in. I had my macbook for about 3 years and the battery had less than 200 cycles on it and the computer suddenly would not stay on unless plugged in (went from holding about 1.5 hr charge to not holding charge at all). I purchased a new battery and this battery has 118 cycles on it. It is doing the same thing. When I unplug it the computer shuts off immediately. It will not stay in sleep mode either. What should I do? I assumed that it was because I tend to leave the computer plugged in so that the cycles stay low, but after only 118 cycles? (and the new battery is less than 8 months old). Could my computer be failing to register the battery? Please help me - I don't want to have to spend another $80 on a battery. (Just so you know, I have removed the battery and made sure the connection is good but this did not help.)

If your problems with the new battery are the same as the old battery, it would seem your Mac isn't charging the battery properly.
    Perhaps it's a Magsafe/charger issue.
Read through the power section of this User tip here, try everyting, including the SMU Reset and see if that makes any difference.

We can't do too much more than that as it seems to be a hardware issue and we can't fix that too much.

  • Ipod Nano won't turn on unless plugged in!!!

Please help! My Ipod nano, purchased just 2 years ago, won't turn on unless plugged in to an external power source, and when plugged in the screen has faint lines across the display and blotches at the sides! It was working perfectly fine until my battery went flat one day and all these problems popped up. Whats the problem and what should I do?

    Hello Exasperatin0n,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
It's likely that your Nano's battery is shot and will need to be replaced. So I would start there and then worry about the display issue. You can choose to Apple repair the Nano, a 3rd party repair company (just do a Google search for iPod Repair and you'll get a number of results), or you can even replace the parts yourself.

  • My ipad won't recharge and now there is no power to even reset it....help..help!

my ipad won't recharge and now there is no power to even reset it

Could be the charger, cable or iPad. Plug the USB cable into your computer. It may say "Not Charging", however, it is charging slowly and will verify that the cable is good.
Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. No problems here.
    Edit...
My IOS-7 is on an iPod Touch.

    Most likely a bad battery.

For some reason the speakers on my phone do not work unless it is plugged into a power source.  Why?

If no change after the following steps, your iPhone likely has a hardware problem.
Power your iPhone off and on.
An iPhone reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes from the backup.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the backup.

  • Are my devices supposed to wi-fi synce even if they are not plugged into a power source?

My three devices are checked to wi-fi sync for windows 7 iTunes, iPad 2, iPhone 4s and iPod touch 4th G.  When I launch iTunes all three devices appear under DEVICES after a few seconds. Now if I click on my iPad's name or my iPhone's name under DEVICES it'll go to the section where I'm ready to sync that device well if I click Sync at the bottom right it reads at the very top where the Apple logo is Syncing "my iPad name" Looking For iPad...for a few seconds then a error message in the middle of the screen that reads " The iPad "My iPad name" could not be synced because the iPad could not be found on the network."  However if the devices are plugged into a power source the sync process begins automatically as soon as iTunes has been launched and loaded without me doing anything cause I've checked the box Open iTunes when this iPad is connected. This way seems to be working flawlessly.  Is it not supposed to sync if its not plugged in or it's just being a crappy Windows 7 iTunes?  I know for a fact that I've wi-fi synced without them plugged in. Won't matter if I initiate the sync from the device, same thing happens except then it won't show the error message in the middle of the screen reads " The iPad "My iPad name" could not be synced because the iPad could not be found on the network." the device under DEVICES just vanishes and won't reappear unless I close iTunes and re start it.
    Tommy V.

You appear to be "forcing" this Sync to happen - regardless of any possible consequences.
In other words, you are deliberately testing the system. Well, that's up to you, but if you use Wi-Fi to Sync even though you're not connected to power, you risk losing data (or it becoming corrupted) if when the battery runs down.
If the battery runs down flat (and the iPhone/iPad stop working) during a Sync, you can be sure that will cause you so many issues with lost or corrupted data, that you'll wish you hadn't forced anything.
It's up to you, but why would you want to do that... ?

  • My ipod nano 6th gen will only turn on when plugged into a power source.

My ipod nano 6th gen ONLY turns on when it is plugged into a power source. As soon as I unplug it, it turns off. I also tried to reset it and it did not help. Any suggestions?

    Howdy mela1223,
If I understand correctly your iPod will not stay on unless you have the charger plugged in even after resetting it. Normally this would indicate a hardware issue that would need a repair but to cover all the bases before that, the last troubleshooting that can be done for it would be to restore it with iTunes on a computer.
Restoring iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
    How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
    Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • My iPad went black and shows a picture of the power source pointing to a iTunes emblem

When I went to install an update, my iPad went black and shows a picture of a power source next to an iTune emblem.  I powered it off but when I power it back on, it shows the same thing.

    RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.

  • I'm travelling and trying to back up my new iPhone to iCloud. I have sufficient storage, am connected to wifi and it's plugged into a power source and yet it doesn't seem to work. Can anyone suggest what I'm doing wrong?

I'm travelling and trying to back up my new iPhone to iCloud. I have sufficient storage, am connected to wifi and it's plugged into a power source and yet it doesn't seem to work at all. I'm currently in India. Could that be the cause or can anyone suggest any reason why this wouldn't work?

"gets stuck" - are there any error messages?
If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test:   Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

  • Is there a way to do a firmware update without being plugged into a power source?

I have a Macbook 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and the indicator light on the Magsafe power cord is not lighting up. I know the cord works because I have tried it on a different computer but it is only this macbook that it doesn't work on. I have reset the SMC. I do need to do a firmware update but when I try to do the update it the firmware it will not let me update because the computer doesn't know that its connected to a power source. When I look at the battery life indicator on the right hand corner it says that its calculating but never changes.
I was using the computer running on battery life and it turned off. I was able to turn the computer on. The computer powers on and off but i'm assuming its going to run the battery power. I don't have another battery to try on this computer. Are there any suggestions?
