IPad2 screen flashes but desktop won't come up

My iPad2 is less than 2 years old and over the last couple months it will go into fits where it just momentarily flashes the icons and then they go away.  Last week an Apple Expert installed the latest Firmware and it seemed better for 3 or 4 days then started again. Sometimes if I can manage to hit one of the icons before it goes away the screen will come on.  If I'm lucky it will stay on but more and more lately it is a battle to get the thing to the point I can actually use it.  What's your experience with Apple Store and Apple Genius/Experts?  Will they do more to help?  Take this as a trade in?  We paid top dollar for the product and I expect Apple products to last more than 2 years.  The iPad has had very gentle use by 2 adults and an occasional grandchild.  It has not been abused.  Can you help?

So it sounds like it may be hardware issue.  If you bought AppleCare with the device, the warranty is extended to 2 years, otherwise it only lasts one year.  More info here:  http://www.apple.com/support/products/ipad.html
You may check your AppleCare registration status on this page:  http://www.apple.com/support/products/
It won't hurt to take the iPad 2 to an Apple Store to have a Genius look at it (and won't cost you anything for the diagnosis), but if it's out of warranty, there is no expectation for replacement.
Also, I believe Apple only replaces devices in-kind, so you won't get an upgrade through replacement.
Target stores have a trade-in program for older iPads now as well:  http://www.targettradeinprogram.com
There are other trade-in options as well (including Apple):  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/11/05/ipad-trade-in_n_4218964.html
I'm sure that's not what you were looking for, but it may be your best option under the circumstances.
Make sure to back up your device (either to your Mac/PC or to iCloud via syncing) if you decide to trade it in, or make a trip to an Apple Store (just in case).

My ipad air2 screen is black and won't come on. I can hear siri but she says she cant work right now. What do I do?

If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures:
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • Screen flashes but won't stay on.

While I was online my screen went black. Now whenever I press the home button the screen flashes but does not stay on. I can still receive calls though. What could be causing this?

    Hello ocruznaz,
Not having a properly working phone can be a huge inconvenience. That's certainly not the impression that we want to leave on you. Rest assured that we are committed to getting this resolved for you once and for all. May I ask is there any physical or liquid damage on your iPhone 4? Also, have there been any 3rd party apps recently downloaded on the device? I would suggest running the battery completely down then recharging it to 100% to see if this corrects the issue. If not then try performing a restore on the device using iTunes from a computer. Once you have done so then please share your findings, in case more assistance is needed.
    Thank you...

  • Desktop won't come up after update

    Hello,
After today's update, my desktop won't come up anymore. When I enter my password in the login box, the sad face comes up telling me: “Oh no. Something has gone wrong. Log out try again”
The first time when rebooted after the update, my desktop came up, but very slowly. And I noticed right away that my gtk themes and icons were not rendered properly. Then, I rebooted again and now my desktop won't come up.
I dont remember all my updates but for sure 'xorg-server' and 'xorg-server-common' were among them. I dont know this is any use.
During update I didn't have any error message.
    My system:
    AMD dual core 2.6
    Memory: 6 gb
Video: Radeon HD 3600 (using open source driver)
    Desktop: Gnome 3.2

In your "/etc/inittab" file, you probably have a line that looks like "x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon". Modify this line to be "x:5:respawn:/usr/sbin/gdm -nodaemon 2>/home/some_file". Then errors encountered should be printed to /home/some_file.
jmak wrote:GDM wasn't part of the update and when I try to login typing 'startx' I get the message “command not found”
Then you need the package xorg-xinit.
I istalled 'xorg-xinit' and now when I type startx I get:
    “Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0”

  • T400 screen flashes white once, won't start

Whether I try turning it on with battery or AC, the same issue occurs. The indicator lights turn on but the screen flashes white and doesn't display a thing afterword. Something is definately broken, but what?

You should methodically follow all the steps in Apple's article on Gray screen appears during startup.
    Good luck.

  • Lightroom CC won't open. Flash screen flashes, but that's it. Uninstalled and reinstalled (with CC) but got the same result.

I installed Lightroom CC with CC App on Macbook running Yosemite 10.10.3. It says it's installed, but attempts to open it get only a momentary view of the flash screen, then nothing. I uninstalled and reinstalled but get the same result.

I can confirm that sign out of Creative Cloud, and sign back in works, as the post above says.
To Adobe: Creative Cloud needs to die horrible death. Please bring back regular licensing of your products. CC has been nothing but nightmare.

  • Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter 1.03 - screen goes black and won't come back

I have a new Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to allow my original Apple 30" Cinema Display to connect to the new Mac Pro.  Shipped straight from Apple, it is firmware version 1.03.  I've never had flickering issues as so commonly described, but the display will often go black (possibly after a screen power save) and not come back.  when this happens I am still able to connect to and use the Mac via remote connection.  But the only way to get the screen back is either to unplug the adapter and plug it back in to the Mac, or to shut down and power up the Mac.  Is anyone else seeing this issue?

    Hello,
    From the news page here...
    http://xlr8yourmac.com/
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

  • This is a problem. The new layout for apple mail in iCloud shows the body of a mail or any attachments on the right half of the screen. But it won't print just the attachment, it prints the whole email page, cutting off the bottom of the attachment.

Even if I try to 'screen shot' just the attachment, the view won't move down as I enlarge the 'screen shot' to get all of the attachment. Previously, I could "SAVE" the attachment and only the attachment would be saved. Now the whole email page including the address info from the top is saved, so when I try to print what should be an 8.5x11 attachment the bottom of it won't print because the top 2" include the email address info.
    Suggestions?

That's one of the weird things.. it recognizes it maybe 10% of the time. And usually, only after I do the two-button reset. Problem is.. since it won't charge above 2%, anytime I try to do a restore or anything like that using iTunes, my device shuts off and I lose whatever progress I'd made.
So, an update... after reading through a bunch of similar complaints (there are literally 1000's of them so there's NO WAY this isn't somehow ios7 related, thanks a lot APPLE ) I decided to try a restore in recovery mode. After 3 hours and several disconnections... I ended up having to just set it up as a new iPad, as the restore did nothing. Weirdly though... as I was doing the restore in recovery mode.. I noticed I'd gotten up to a 10% charge.. higher than it's been since September, so after setting it up as a new device, I turned it off and plugged it in using the wall charger. 2 hours later and I was up to 38%. Still not great, as my iPad, before ios7 could've fully charged twice in the amount of time it took for me to now get 28% more of a charge. And that's with a fully cleaned out device.. so that really ***** and I'm now more confused than ever.
But I'm gonna leave it overnight charging and see what I come up with tomorrow. Sadly, when I paid $600 for it in February, I never expected to have to play "wait and see" with it...

ipad flickering blue screen then off. won't switch on?

    Has the iPad been dropped?
Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • IPhoto 9.2.1 Update causes screen flash between desktop and blank

A customer brought his MacBook Pro to us after updating his iPhoto to 9.2.1.
When he boots up, it loads and flashes between his desktop and a blank bluish/black screen in 1sec intervels.
If you pull up iPhoto it will stop and everything runs "normal"

    Any suggestions?

At this time, I'm leaving iPhoto on.
The Finder works just fine. Don't see any problems.
    I restarted.
At first it did not blink. Saw the desktop.
Then it began to alternative between a color and the desktop.

  • Icon on toolbar but application won't come on monitor

The mail icon is on the toolbar but after clicking, nothing appears on monitor. Toolbox icon registers the number of messages in mailbox  but the monitor screen continues with screen saver. Hwat must I do to open email so I can read and send messages. Any assistance willl be greatly appreciated.

The icon on the Dock is a link (alias) to the actual Mail application which is located in the Applications folder - maybe the alias has somehow lost its association with the Mail app. Open the Applications folder, locate Mail and launch it from there. If it launches a second Mail icon should appear in the Dock. Control+Click or right click this new icon and select Options>Keep in Dock.
You can then delete the original Mail icon from the Dock by clicking and holding, drag it off the Dock, let go and it will disappear in a puff of smoke.

  • Toshiba screen boots, but it won't fully l

Hello, I have purchased a Toshiba Satellite Laptop C55D-B5310 about 5 months ago and recently, I turned it on and the screen that usually is there when it boots up (Toshiba, Leading Innovation.) and then it just stayed there, I also noticed that the Laptop was getting really hot so I decided to forcefully shut it down by holding the power button. I tried the same thing again several times, all resulted the same with me forcefully shutting it down.
I would just like to know if this is a simple problem before I take it to a technician, so I'm hoping I can easily fix this, which might be doubtful, so, if you know what is happening and how I can fix this, I would be very appreciated!

    Perform a SMC reset:

If that brings some life into the MBP, you may look at this if necessary:
