IPadding Without a Computer

Is it possible for an iPad to serve as your only computing device? The release of OS 4.2 points out this question. I cannot figure out any way to get to the update without having to connect to a computer and update through the computer's iTunes. Isn't there some other way to get this? How about through iTunes on the iPad itself. I do not currently have a computer I can sync it with...plus, I was planning to recommend that my in-laws use an iPad as their first "computer"...using the 3G network instead of having to go the ISP, modem route. Considering the intuitive nature and ease of use of the iPad, this seems like an opportunity missed.

Do you live in the same city as your dad? My mom (84 yrs) really likes my iPad and has expressed interest in one. She doesn't have a computer at home, but I do have an account for her on my MBP which I take to her house when needed. If she gets an iPad, I am going to sync her iPad with her account on my MBP which I can take over to her house anytime we need to update software, do periodic syncs, etc. But, we live only about 10 minutes apart, so it's easy for me to do this.

Then there is absolutely no way to get the pictures from the iPod to the iPad unless you import them to your computer and then import them inor iTunes and sync them to the iPad.
Where did the pictures come from? Which iPod version do you have?

You may have to do this several times.
Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • What is your workaround - removing RAW files from iPad without a computer

    Hello
Over the last couple days I have searched virtually the entire web for a solution for a photo workflow that would allow me to only have my ipad with me when I am on a vacation and still being able to review my images without running out of memory.
Here's the issue on which I couldn't find any solution:
When using the ipad with the camera connection kit (CCK) then the import function will always copy the raw files along with the jpg to the ipad. There is no way of selecting to only import the jpg files.
(At least if you have only 1 CF card slot - Canon 5DMk2)
I already wrote to apple asking for offering that option in their importing dialogue.
Unfortunately it appears that many photographers also ran into the very same issue - but other than buying a 128GB ipad there appears to be no workaround.
Does anybody know a decent solution?
    My goal would be:
    1. Import the RAW files to iphoto on the ipad
    2. Create smaller jpg versions
    3. Delete the originals in iphoto to free up space
    4. Use the smaller versions on the ipad for showing/reviewing

You don't need to do raw processing on iPad, if you shoot in RAW+JPEG mode.  Then, you can preview JPEG on iPad and leave RAW processing for when you get home to your computer.  The trouble is that iPad imports both RAW+JPEG and runs out of space; which is difficult to recover because iPad lacks "delete all raw" button.
Thousands of photographers have been asking for this workflow for years.  Apple knows, but Apple chose to do nothing.  I'm giving up on Apple.
Does anyone know of a 3rd party app which can use Camera Connection Kit to import only JPEG versions of photos from an SD card or a camera?  Does this app allow one to select all pictures and delete them after they are no longer needed on the iPad?
Remember: This has to function in the middle of nowhere, using just a camera and iPad.  No computer!  Many photographers prefer to travel light.

  • How can i transfer my stuff from ipod to ipad without a computer

Is there anyway possible to transfer directly from ipod touch to ipad?  I don't have acces to a regular computer and have things I need to transfer over.

    Hi dsteineke,
With iCloud you don't need to transfer many things because they are available to all devices set up under your iCloud account.
Here is a link that will give you an overview of all of the various content that you can share without syncing:

  • How can I transfer video from my iPhone to my iPad without a computer?

I do have a work computer, a MacBook Air, but I can't sync it to my iPad. My iPad is already synced to my home computer. The camera connection kit used to work, but now I have an iPhone 5s and an iPad mini: all lightening connectors. Will the lightening to USB Camera adapter do the job?

    Dan Fenner wrote:

    Yep.
However, importing pics/videos in your camera roll DOES NOT involve syncing, & you can import these directly to your computer. Launch iPhoto, connect your phone, import. If iTunes launches, quit it.
That's all you have to do. You can import camera roll pics/videos to any computer you want.

  • How do I load pics and music onto ipad without another computer

I bought a IPAD 2 after my home computer crashed. I had all of my Pictures and Music saved on an external hard drive. Problem is I don't have a personal computer to load all of them onto to transfer to my IPAD? Please help!!!

Unless I am missing something, you can't transfer the music and photos from an external drive to the iPad. You need a computer that has an operating system that can move the files from the drive to the computer and then to the iPad. Or you could sync the content from the drive, I think, but you still need an operating system in order to make the transfer work.

  • How can i erase my ipad without a computer?

My ipad was in my bag and somehow by the time I got home there had been enough passcode attempts to lock the ipad. I use the magnetic cover which activates the ipad when opened, so maybe it was moving enough to allow the ipad to activate? The bottom line is that I get a message saying the ipad is disabled and I don't have the computer with me which I originally synced to. I have been using icloud backup so eberything should be saved. If I use find my ipad with my iphone, it says offline because the ipad hasn't connected to the wifi network.
Is the only option to go to the apple store for them to erase? Is there a time delay so I will be able to enter the passcode later?

You need a computer to restore/Recover your iPad.

  • Is there a way to download/view PDF files on the iPad without using another computer?

I just recently purchased the new iPad. I have also downloaded iBooks and a PDF reader. Is there any way to view and/or download PDF files from my iPad, without using an outside computer? Please help!

One way is to get the GoodReader app. It has a built in web browser that allows you to web surf and download pdfs into GoodReader. You can read them in the GoodReader app or open them in other apps that can read pdfs.

  • How to download youtube videos to ipad without using a computer.

How to download youtube videos to ipad without using a computer???  Looking to download some videos people created using Dr. Jean music.  My kid used Dr. Jean in preschool and wanted to keep singing them at home.
Looking for a friend that doesn't use a computer.  I myself have downloaded some kids educational stuff and added to itunes and then put on ipod/ipad using firefox.
Is there an easy way, so they don't go to the photo roll??
    thanks in advance.

There are some Apps you can use, but be careful they will only download these videos inside the App, so you won't ba able to play them in your video app or share them.
Most popular is the app called "Video Download" but there are a lot of alternatives for free and even with more quality which you can pay for.

How can I transfer video taken with my iPhone to my iPad WITHOUT using a computer or iTunes? I'm going to Europe for a month and want to use my iPhone to take pics and video, then come back to the hotel room and use my iPad to edit/store each evening. I don't want to use my iPad to take the video...too large/bulky. And I WON'T have a computer with me...I purchased the iPad to take with me so I could use the RDC to my home computer and avoid taking my computer at all. Is this possible?

here is a cheaper solution than camera kit and a lot easier if you have WIFI available.
I use the PhotoSync APP (I think its a $1.99) will transfer videos and photos over WIFI to any other IOS device or even PC/MAC. Great app since I like doing video and photos on my IPHONE and transfer to IPAD2 without synching through computer or doing cloud based storage.
You can even send photos/videos from your MAC/PC to your IOS devices that way too. Makes it so much easier.

  • How do I delete synced photos from my IPad 2? My computer is no longer holding a charge and I would like to delete photos I synced without my computer

I hope that it is not true that I cannot delete photos thaI synced to my iPad. I cannot use my computer because it is not charging. How do I remove synced photos from my iPad without the use of my ITunes?

This is a problem. Normally you do need to connect to the computer you've synced ith previously to delete albums that were copied from that computer.
In the case where the old computer fails, crashes or is sold or discarded, you need to get all of your stuff off the iPad and onto a new computer. Visit Apple support to learn how to do this. Once you establish a new tunes library on a different computer you can sync and delete the photo albums you no longer want.
Another option is to restore your iPad to its original state. That will delete everything including photos, non default apps, music, videos, etc.
Once reset and erased you can download all purchased apps again.

  • I activated my iPad 2 without a computer. How can I sync now?

I activated my iPad 2 without a computer. When connected to a PC, iTunes is not even allowing back up purchased apps. It gives a warning that it cannot read the contents of the iPad. I authorized the PC via my iTunes store account. Also I prevented the iTunes from automatic updating just in case. Nothing changed; it is not even charging. Isn't there any solution other than restoring?

    Sync to new computer

    1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
    That should do it.
