Iphone 09 crashes every time when importing from an external hard drive

Just bought a mac mini and I wanted to import my jpgs from my windows external disk (disconnected it from the pc temporarily.) However, I do not have enough hard drive on the mini to hold all of the pictures, so I moved the iphoto library (using the instructions obtained on this forum) to a second external drive (formatted as mac.) I'm trying to have iphoto import from the windows external hard drive and place the photos into the library located on the mac external hard drive. This shouldn't be a problem.
However, iphoto will go fine for about 1000 photos then crash. It has done this the last 9 attempts. I also noticed that the photos that have been imported fine (I stopped the import to see how the software would work -- before it crashed out on me) and iphoto displays the photo, but when I click it, iphoto says the file cannot be found.
Wow, this program has some serious flaws. I'm giving up on it, and hoping the Picassa port will work better.

Did you want help or just to share the experience?

I had to reformat my OSX 10.5.8 and I can't restore my emails from my time machine backup from an external hard drive - only the latest (post backup) time machine back ups are available to restore. Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.
See #E3 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see and restore from the "old" drive.
And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

I threw out 24 time machine backups from an external hard drive into my IMac desktop trash and now I can't empty my trash.

Since you didn't mention what type of error message you were seeing, I'm going to guess on what is happening.
I'm guessing that since you threw away Time Machine backups, that Time Machine is probably active on your Mac. There is a chance then that the files you tossed are marked as in use. You can't delete files that are in use.
Try turning Time Machine off, then restart your Mac. Then try deleting them again.
Once done, turn Time Machine back on.

  • Is there a way to get my photos off an old time machine backup from an external hard drive?

Is there a way to get my photos off an old time machine backup from an external hard drive?

You will have to connect the Time Machine HDD and click on the Icon.  You will see one folder called Backups.backupdb.  Click on that and you will have to continue until you find the home folder.  The iPhoto library (where the pictures are, not the application) will probably be in your pictures folder.  You will have to drag that to your desk top.  Then you will have access to individual images.

  • Importing Time Machine backup  from an external hard drive

    Hi...to all
Last week i bought a Macbook. I pluged in my external hard drive Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus and it did a time machine backup on the Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus. The folder that was generated by the time machine on my external hard drive has the name backups.backupdb.
Then, i decided to return the Macbook and bought a Macbook Pro.
When I pluged the same external hard drive, Maxtor OneTOuch 4 Plus, although I am able to access and open individual files and folders, I am not able to copy neither any nor all the folders/files from my external hard drive to my new Macbook Pro. Moreover, I am able to access/open the files located in my external hard drive but when try to copy specific files from this drive to my Macbook Pro I get the following error message: Sorry the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error ocurred (Error code -50). Now, here is where it gets interesting: after 2 failed attempts to copy any single file from my external hard drive to my Macbook Pro desktop and receiving the above error message I am then able to copy the specific file (singular). This would mean that to copy the files and folders in the external hard drive i would need to do it on a one by one basis? If so, it would take forever...
Can someone please kindly help out.
    Thanks on advance

Are you referring to the files in Time Machine's backup directory on your hard drive? If so, and if what you are trying to do is to recover those from the backup to your working volume on the Macbook Pro (which is not what your title says you want to do but seems to be implied by the body of the question) then you need to have the computer name of the Macbook Pro the same as the computer name of the original Macbook (I think that step is required), then on the Macbook Pro choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" from the Time Machine menu in Dock. This will allow you to recover files or folder in the usual way.
Alternatively, if you wanted to transfer all your user data in one go, you could fire up Migration Assistant and choose the Time Machine backup as the source to transfer the user data from (again I think the computer names have to be the same but I'm not totally sure).

  • HT201250 How can I migrate a Time Machine backup from an external hard drive to a new TimeCapsuls?

I just got a 2TB Time Capsule.  I want to migrate my time machine backups on an external hard drive to the new Time Capsule.  I have about 430Gb of files to back up; I don't want to wait 7-8 days for the backup, unless I have to.  I am using OS 10.7.5 (forget which cat that is).  I have mounted the TC drive as 10.0.1.1; I tried to drag and drop from old to "data" on TC, but I get the error "The volume is the wrong format for a backup."  Any ideas how I can move my old files to the new, and bypass creating a brand new backup file?
    Thanks.

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.
The instructions on that are here
If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

  • How do I stop ITunes from loading songs into library when played from an external hard drive

How do I stop ITunes from loading every song I play into my library from an external hard drive?

    Mac OS X: Double-Clicking a File Opens the Wrong Application - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2291
-= Changing the application used to open all files of a certain kind (written with reference to OSX 10.4 but may not have changed) =-
    1) In a Finder window highlight a file of the kind you want to change the application to open that kind of file.
    2) While that file is highlighted, select File > Get Info or press command (apple or propeller icon) + i to get a file information window.
    3) In the lower part of the info window there is an "open with" menu with a list of applications.
    4) If your application is already in the box then it is the default application for opening that kind of file and you don't need to do anything more.  Close the get info window.
    5) If the application showing in the menu is not the one with which you wish to open the file then select a new application. If your application does not appear there then select the "other..." and track down the application (usually in the Applications folder at the main level of the computer).
    6) If you wish to change all files of this type to open with this application in future, make sure the "change all" button is selected.
    7) Close the get info window.

  • IMovie crashes every time on Import from Camera ?!?!

So iMovie just started crashing every time I click on Import from Camera. I have no idea what to try really... I've been having an issue with iPhoto too. Every time I open it it says "A photo has been found that has not been imported. Would I like to?" It doesn't matter what I click on, yes or no, it makes an empty folder. I'm tempted to just reinstall the whole iLife suite but wanna make sure my current libraries are safe. Unless anybody has any ideas of anything else I can try?

A reinstall shouldn't affect your iMovie Events Library or Projects. If these are in their normal locations, the newly installed iMovie should see them when opened for the first time. The normal locations are in your user (Home) folder Movies>iMovie Events and Movies>iMovie Projects. If you are storing these on an external drive they will be in folders named iMovie Events and iMovie Projects at the top level of the drive. If you have moved these to a different location, then iMovie will probably not find them. Any moves should always be made from within iMovie by Command-dragging between the disk icons in the Events Library and Projects Library. Never move Events or Projects using the Finder!
Similarly, a reinstall of iPhoto shouldn't affect your Events or Albums - again provided you haven't moved the iPhoto Library from its default location. If you are uncertain about this, check on the iPhoto forums.
In any event, before reinstalling software you should have a back-up. I use Time Machine for this. After reinstalling you should Repair Permissions using Disk Utility. There is no guarantee that everything will be fine after reinstalling, as you may have other issues with your system that are affecting iMovie and iPhoto. But I'll leave it there as I'm now getting out of my depth!

  • Can I migrate my data from a regular hard drive to a solid state drive using only a Time Machine backup from an external hard drive?

I just bought a Samsung 830 256GB solid state drive which I will use to replace my 15-inch, 2.53 GHz, Mid 2009 MacBook Pro's stock hard drive. I also keep an external hard drive in which I keep my regular Time Machine backups via FireWire. Would I be able to migrate all my data from it after putting in the solid state drive? I prefer not to use any third-party applications and I do not plan on replacing the SuperDrive with the hard drive that I'm going to remove from my laptop.

    Yes.

  • Time Machine Restore from Networked external hard drive - not working??

recap: hard drive failure on iMac. Took it to Genius folks, they installed a new hard drive with updated Leopard OSx on it.
I came home turned it on, selected "restore from time machine" feature. It finds my external hard drive (which is connected to an airport extreme via USB 2.0) My computer is connected via ethernet to the airport extreme.
I select the imac backup and up pops the login screen. I log in. Then I get the "Checking Time Machine Backup...." And it just keeps checking and checking. The external hard drive is making all sorts of noises, like it is working away, but it just keeps checking. Also have the spinning beach ball....
How long does this go on before we get on with it?

LOL.. didn't see your answer until now. I feel pretty good as I did exactly what you recommended. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it.
Here's the rundown on what I did.
LOL. I see y'all didn't know what to do either!!
Well after puzzling for a bit I finally aborted the process. I tried connecting my hard drive directly to the computer - but then it would not recognize the backup on the external drive.
So finally, I rebooted using the install disk and selected utilities and restore and voila, we were in business.
Restore said it would take 16 hours and went to bed - 11am. Got up at 5 and it was complete (guess it really didn't take that long) So far, everything looks great!!!!!
Hope this helps someone out there.

  • Every time i de connect my External Hard Drive

I just recently bought a seagate external hard drive and I use it for time machine. So everything is fine connecting and all but after i Disconnect it a little loading screen comes on the desktop (image below). If i sign out it of my account it goes away.
    http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/8015/imageis.png
Im wondering why its there, and how i can prevent it from coming up.

If you have the Time Machine icon at the top of your screen, open preferences from the drop down menu and turn off Time Machine. It may be trying to finish or clean up a backup.

  • Use iPhone 4 to play iTunes library from an external hard drive without computer

    Hello all-
I use iTunes for playback of my music library.  My library is too large to be stored locally on my MBP so I use an external hard drive.  I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to use / setup an iPhone 4 to be able to read the iTunes library files and access the music stored on the external hard disc for playback WITHOUT the use of my MBP or any other computer.  I may be asking too much but essentially it is just code that is written into iTunes that allows this to happen, between computer and external hard drive as well as iPod and it's hard disk.  Of course I would need to be able to connect my iPhone to the external hard drive.  I figure the dock to usb cable would suffice.
    Any help is appreciated!
    r

thanks for the quick reply!  I was hoping to not only access the individual files, but use an actual user interface that could read the iTunes library files that I already have created via iTunes on my MBP, and provide me with an iTunes like playback experience, similar to how the Remote app works or the iPod app.  Thanks though, I might use NetPortal for other applications though.

  • Photos on my Mac show the wrong date when imported from a portable Hard Drive

I’ve got loads of photos that I had imported from my old PC.Last night I decided to start going through them and trying to get them sorted
prior to importing into iphoto. I discovered that some of the pictures (in particular ones I have taken from my old Iphone) all had the same date and time
assigned to them. When I checked the Exif details, it listed the correct camera etc, but the date created seems to have changed to the date I copied them to my portable hard drive.
I thought this was strange as when they were on my PC I thought they were correct. I booted my PC up and checked the portable hard drive on Windows. When viewed on my PC the pictures all have the correct time and date assigned to them. However when I plug the same portable hard drive into my Mac the same files show up as being created on a more recent date (say 20th Jan 2013).
I’ve done a lot of research last night, although I can find no forum with this exact problem, I feel it must have something to do with compatibility. The portable hard drive is FAT32, and I am assuming that in order to ensure all of the photos information is transferred correctly in needs to be NTFS.
The problem I have is how do I transfer my files again from my PC to an NTFS drive, whilst keeping all of the correct date and time information assigned to the photos. My understanding is that the 2 aren’t compatible.
Has anyone ever had this problem? It mainly seems to be with photos I have extracted from my Iphone or edited in some form by rotating them.
I have a 13" Macbook Pro Retina with OSX Mavericks installed.

What you may want to do is archive as a Zipfile the photos and then transfer them to the Mac.     It is possible some of the metadata is being lost on the FAT32 formatting.    USB Flashdrive might work better than a FAT32 formatted hard drive, as I do know that most USB Flashdrives are formatted about the same as SD media cards, which manage to preserve the data when copied from camera to Mac.    My big question is, do you still have the photos on media cards?  You might just want to get a media card reader on your Mac, if the photos are not on SD cards, and transfer them over with the media card reader.
I do believe Retina MacBook Pros all have SD card readers built-in.
Note: I've asked this be moved to the MacBook Pro forum.  MacBook without the secondary name refers to the consumer notebook Apple stopped making in 2011.

  • Deleting the time machine backup from an external hard drive

I wanted to delete the backup because I got another hard drive for that and wanted to free up the space on this one that I had been using for that, and so I moved the whole Backups.backupdb file to the trash. I think I've learned the hard way that is not the way to do it.  Now I can't get it out of the trash, and it continues to take up space on the hard drive. Secure empty doesn't do it. I repaired permissions, and the drive itself in disk utilities, which didn't help. I have a lot of other stuff on that disk which I would like to keep, so I don't want to wipe the whole thing. Please help.

Next time just use Disk Utility and Erase the Drive, it will be much faster and a whole lot less trouble.
In fact it might not hurt to do that as well, after you get the Trash emptied.
