IPhone 3G 16GB "bricked" after failed update to 2.1
Hi,
i bought a iPhone 3G with 16 GB in Italy. I unpacked and activated it without any problems. Then iTunes 8.0.1 suggested to upgrade to iPhone OS 2.1. So I did. After over 30 min the upgrade failed with some unknown error (I cannot remember the exact message). When i switch the phone on, the "connect-to-iTunes"-Screen appears and iTunes tells me it has detected a Phone in recovery-mode. I tried over 20 times to repeat the upgrade to 2.1 (with and without the DFU-mode). Every time after about 40min I get an unkown error - 1002. The logfile tells me that a timeout occurred. Here is one of the last lines of the log:

Friends iPhone stuck in recovery after failed update
Friends phone failed on OTA update, now stuck in recovery mode, sleep/wake button is broken so cannot hard restart or get to dfu, connected to his computer with iPhone cable but computer does not recognise even with iTunes logo and cable showing, was planning to use tiny umbrella to kick it out of recovery but as PC cannot see it we cannot do that?
I'm not sure there's much else that can be done.

IPhone 3GS unresponsive/bricked after iOS5 Update
First let me start off by saying that I feel Apple is a SUPERIOR company and 99% of the time have excellent things to say about their products. I will, and in this case have once again, continue to buy their products over any other company. That being said....
I updated my iPhone 3GS on 12 Oct 11. When the process was almost completed I received the message that iTunes was unable to continue with activation at this time. I have called customer support numerous times (Case ID: 252118395) and have gone to the Apple store where I live. No one can seem to figure out what happened with the update or my iPhone. I tried reinstalling the OS over 50 times now and receive the same message. I went three days without a phone before I was forced to buy the 4S model. I am a career soldier waiting to deploy and going that long without a phone was unacceptable. All my 3GS has on the screen now is the gray screen saying "iPhone" and different languages scroll across. The last 4 times I have contacted Apple reference this I sit on hold for about 20 minutes and then it just goes to a ringing sound with no answer. This is absolutely unacceptable and I know Apple is a better company than to just keep giving me answers of, "I don't know what's wrong; keep trying; Give it more time." The Apple store manager at the Colorado Springs store told me it was because iOS5 wasn't compatible with the 3GS model; though your website clearly says it is as I told her. I was also told by an "Apple Genius" at the same store my "best friend" in my case was to "Google" it to see about unlocking the phone and reinstalling iOS 4 but she, "Couldn't really tell me that." Of a side note the complete lack of professionalism and "hey bro" attitude at this store was in stark contrast to the professional atmosphere and service excellence that the late Mr. Jobs fostered. All I want is for my old iPhone 3GS to be restored so at least we can use it for an iPod Touch. I have exhausted all attempts to contact Apple. A prompt response would be greatly appreciated as I know you are a much better run company than this and you give no real e-mail link to help out with such matters. My iPhone 3Gs is not detecting any carriers. I have just upgraded to ios 5.
I have tried my SIM in another phone and it is working OK. The phone was unlokced by O2 and I have tried an O2 SIM in it which also does not work.
When I manually search for carriers then none are found.
I'm beginning to think this is a hardware fault.
Any ideas? -

After the update to iOS 8 the power button of my iPhone (iPhone 5 16gb) starts to fail and before the update it was working properly.
I'm a certified iOS developer and this same situation occurred when i tried to install the iOS 8 beta 2 on the same iPhone i mentioned above, but i had to reinstall the iOS 7.1 just a few days later and the button starts to work normally again.
Any thoughts about this?Have you checked to see if your phone is eligible for the Power button replacement?

My iphone 4 is dead after I updated to ios 6.1.3 it doesnt turn on and doesnt respond to itunes also. Visited Apptronix service desk but they say there is nothing they can do about it, and they have charged INR 10640 for a new one. Is there anybody with similar problem....

After failed update of itunes yesterday, now will not run with error message "MSVCR80.dll not found" APSDaemon.exe will not run. itunes will not now run.
Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
iTunes
Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
Bonjour
Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.

Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

You can either figure out what carrier it's locked to and contact them to see if they offer unlocking, or you can throw it away or sell it and buy an unlocked iPhone from a legitimate source.

You are in Recovery Mode. Follow the instructions below to recover your iPad.
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button.
5. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad. Data will be lost. -

You can NOT unlock it. Only the carrier it is locked to can legally authorize unlocking it and the Japanese carriers will not do so.
In order to be using it previously with a non Japanese carrier, the phone had to be hacked to illegally unlock it. You can not get help here.
Buy a new phone you can use. -

It sounds a lot like your phone was jailbroken or hacked to unlock it before you updated.

I updated my iPhone 3G today and after the update it said on iTunes that my sim was not compatible and my iPhone screen went on to slide for emergency/connect to itunes. Ive tried restoring it but it hasnt worked. Please help!
Unless the iPhone was purchased as unlocked very recently directly from an Apple Store (the only place in the US where unlocked iPhones are sold, and then only since June), which from the symptoms I doubt is the case, then it was locked to AT&T and jailbroken to make it work with an Irish cell carrier. Updating the operating system has now relocked the iPhone back to AT&T.
Only the cell carrier can institute an official unlock, one which will hold across updates of the operating system, and AT&T will not do so for any reason. All we can advise here is that you return the iPhone to your uncle and purchase an iPhone there in Ireland.
