IPhone 3G 16GB - Phone is warm, battery going flat in a day..

Apologies if this has come up before... I suspect it probably might!
Got an iPhone 3G 16GB that I've had since about October. Intermittently over the last few months it'd been draining the battery within the space of a day.. I took it into the Apple store having booked an appointment at the genius bar. The iPhone was 'diagnosed' and was apparently fine - the guy recommended a restore which I forgot about as the problem was so infrequent and not reproducable.
For some reason in the last 2 weeks or so, the phone has become a real pain in the backside, draining the battery within a day and has now started to get very warm to the touch. I only use the phone lightly - a tiny bit of WiFi each day (approx 3 mins) and about 5 texts.. I only enable WiFi when I want to use it (and disable it when not using it) and never even have Bluetooth enabled.
Frustrated with the situation I finally relented and did a full restore last night to a clean 2.1 image.. I've subsequently only re-installed 2 applications of the 20 or so I did have installed - Twitteriffic and an application to authenticate me to the Bluesocket WiFi system we use at work. Lo and behold, it behaved even WORSE today taking me down from fully charged at 8am to warning about only 10% battery life remaining by 5pm...
I'm starting to wonder if the Bluesocket application is somehow involved - perhaps crashing and somehow running in the background? I can't think what else would be to blame? I'm going to restore it again tonight and install NOTHING and see how it behaves... but in the mean time should I be booking another Genius bar appointment?
Thanks.

Hi ChristyS,
Yeah - I always found the same thing. The usage counter would creep up even though I'd barely used the phone...
Since my original post I stripped back on applications and simply installed Twitteriffic. I've found that the BlueSocket application I was referring to seems to be to blame... I think it was, somehow, crashing out or something or somehow holding the WiFi connection open even after I'd disabled it. Without the Bluesocket application installed, and with me manually having to log on to my work WiFi system, I'm now getting about 3 days out of the phone...
Need to speak to the developer of the app I think!

  • Phone hangs once battery goes flat!

    Hi,
I am using Iphone 3G 8GB. But everytime my phone's battery went flat, the phone will hang. Then it will prompt me to restore thru itunes (a picture of a itunes icon on top and a USB plug below).
So i tried to do as it says. However the my phone is locked with passcode and itunes won't allow me to sync unless i unlock from my phone.
But how am i suppose to unlock it when my phone is still hang? It happens 3/4 times already. Then only way i tried which works is to repeatedly off and on my phone until it returns back to normal.
Seriously, it's very irritating thus i posted this to seek help. Hope someone is kind enough to help me up.

    Welcome to the discussions,
make sure your phone is charged and connect in recovery mode and restore "as new iphone" without using the backup, it may contain corrupt files causing this behavior.

  • Why is my 4s which has been reset to new turned off but battery going flat in a day

This phone won't hold it's charge. It has been restored, setup as a new phone but not activated and then turned off and yet the battery still dies. When it is setup it wouldn't last a day either that is why I tried the restore and set it up as a new phone. I want to sell it but I can't while it is behaving the way it is. It has a new battery so it isn't the battery. Just don't know why it is doing it when as I said it has been reset to a new phone but left at the 'hello' screen and turned off and it still goes flat.

There is probably a short somewhere or there could be a bad chip on the logic board.

  • I bought a new Iphone 5 Friday the battery goes flat in less than half a day also the wifi disconnects in less than 40 secs

I bought a new Iphone 5 Friday the battery goes flat in less than half a day also the wifi disconnects in less than 40 secs this is really frustrating I think I have a dud phone or is this the new IOS6.1 software update?

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as NEW device.  If you've been through ALL the steps listed and you're still having problems, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • Why the iPhone 4 16GB drains out the battery faster after upgrading to ios 5?

Why the iPhone 4 16GB drains out the battery faster after upgrading to ios 5?

    Not sure, but try this:
Let the battery drain to below 20% (I went to about 14%).
Plug your phone in and leave it to charge COMPLETELY. This took my phone somewhere around 4 hours to complete.
When you're done, you may have better luck keeping a charge.
iOS 5 adds a lot of additional communication, and every time you connect wirelessly to anything, more power is used. Even so, some people report that a battery cycle like this helps. It seems to have worked for me.

  • After the new update my ipad4 will not do a full recharge even when turned off overnight and the battery goes flat it 2 hours  it is driving me crazy as I had to stop all apps but still not helping

Do you place the ipod in the dock during the night? I did this once and the other day the battery was almost empty because it kept on playing after it rested in the dock.

I do backup with iCloud.  I can't wait until the new iMac is available so that I can once again have my files in more than 1 location without needing to rely solely on the cloud.
I also rely on iTunes and my MacBook and Time Machine as well as backing up to iCloud. I know many users know have gone totally PC free, but I chose to use iCloud merely as my third backup.
I assume that the restore would result in my ability to open Pages and Numbers and fix the problem with deleting apps, but this would also mean that if my Numbers documents still exist solely within the app and are just not on iCloud for some reason that they would be gone forever.  Is that right?
In a word, yes. In a little more detail.... When you restore from an iCloud backup, you must erase the device and start all over again. There is no other way to access the backup in iCloud without erasing the device. Consequently, you are starting all over again. Therefore, it would also be my assumption that Pages and Numbers will work again and that the deleting apps issues would be fixed as well.
If the documents are not in the backup, and you do not have a backup elsewhere, the documents could be gone forever.

  • After updating to ios7 my iphone 5 my phone is consuming battery alot

  • Computer shuts down randomly; Battery goes flat from 1:30h to 0 in 1min

    I have a strange behaviour on my laptop;
I fully charge the battery and then disconnect from power plug.
Checking the battery both through Battery icon as well as pressing the button on the battery itself shows that it was more than half full.
Within 2 minutes the battery goes from half full to a shut down and can only be revived through connecting the power cord again.
Anyone having seen this and any solutions out here
    thx J

Your battery has unfortunately gone bad. After a long while these batteries can be mischarged so that even though there is only a small amount of battery power it reads as full and there is no way to fix this that I know of. Its a fact of life with most laptops out there.
If you have not tried it, to be sure, you can reset your power management and let the battery charge back up and see if it any better.

  • Iphone 3GS shuts down now after Battery goes to 50%(On 5.0.1) Help

My Phone will now shut down after battery life goes to around 50%, I can get back on but then it goes off again..
New since I upgraded to 5.0.1....
    Any ideas ???

I have exactly the same issue with iPhone 4 iOS 4.3.3 getting empty battery shutdowns at 20% then at more than 20 % seems to be poor calibration but I don't know how to reach 0% if it keeps shutting at 20% anyways charging to 100% then restoring appears to solve the problem but it's only a matter of time then the problem comes back ... Any ideas

  • IPhone 4s 16GB ran out of battery at 3pm?

I was playing games for quite a bit, but 3pm from a full charge on the morning? Come on. Is there possibly something wrong with the phone?

Without knowing what kind of games you were playing and for how long, my gut reaction is, sure, this is entirely possible...

  • I purchased new iPhone 5 but phone shows cellular usage for lifetime calls 5 days 11 hours. How can this be?

I purchased a new iPhone 5 and it shows 5 days 11 hours of cellular lifetime call time. I suspect someone had used this phone prior to selling it. Can someone tell me if I am correct. Shouldn't it show only the time that I have logged in calls since purchasing it?

I synced it with my iTunes account if that is how you restore from a backup. But my old phone shows 7 days and 2 hours call time and my new phone shows 5 days 11 hours.

  • I'm running out of storage on my iPhone 5 16gb?

Here's the thing I have an iPhone 5 16GB phone which is using 13.1gb leaving only 241mb available.
My laptop is out of service so I haven't been able to back up to my laptop for a while, but have iCloud storage of 15GB which I have 11GB available.
    Music takes up 4GB
    Photos 3.3GB
    Lots of apps
I've deleted all my SMS messages
Cleared all my cookies and safari data
I have photos stored on my phone from 2011 which I don't need on my phone but don't want to delete them... Help

Delete some apps (you can download them again later). Download the Dropbox or Box app and open an account. They both give you some space for free. It should be more than enough space to upload your pictures so that you can then delete them from the device.
How much space you have in iCloud isn't really relevant. That's space for back ups. It can't substitute for local storage.

  • Macbook only shuts down when battery is flat and date and time revert to 2008

    Hey Guys
My Macbook only shuts down when the battery goes flat.
When I switch it back on everything seems to be fine though the date and time are incorrect. Seems to go to default date which is 2008.
Other things seem to affect my browser, Facebook won't login properly and certain websites seem to propmt that the website can't be trusted, which is strange because gmail is one of them and should be fine.
Appreciate all the help from you cyber friendly folks!

To answer your questions in sequence:
    1) You can't, really: the symptoms your Mac is exhibiting point at a loose or next-to-dead back-up battery. Only way to find out is to test it, and to do that, you must open your machine, locate the battery and test it with a battery tester (see here for more info on how to open your Mac; make sure to select the right model)
    2) It's actually the opposite: when you must use your Mac on the battery, well, then, do it, but if you're sitting at your desk, or, like me, on your sofa, with your MBP on your lap, simply keep it plugged into the main.
An additional measure to preserve your battery, that applies less to the recent Unibody design, but is helpful for ealier adopters of the MacBook Pro: don't leave your machine plugged in when it's turned off; it prevents a slow, natural depletion of the battery, and will play against you in the long run.
Last but not least: battery calibration is required once a month for older MacBook Pro models (non-Unibody, basically). If your machine belongs to that era kids the age of Justin B. don't even imagine ever existed, check here.

  • HT2188 I bought my iPhone 4s Nov. 20.  I updated immediately to ios6.0 and cannot make it through even 1 day without the battery going down to almost zero.  Thats with apps closed, wifi off, screen off, etc.  It's a horror.  I have to constantly keep char

I purchased an iPhone 4s on Nov. 20th.  I immediately had to update the software to ios 6.0.1.  I cannot even get through 1 day without the phone battery losing all power.  It loses 10-20% per hour, and that's with apps closed, wifi off, bluetooth off, screen dark, updates current, etc.  You can hold the phone in your hand and watch the power go down.  It also gets very warm.  I have to charge it once or twice a day so I have it when I need it.
I took it in to the Sprint store for diagnostics to see if there was something wrong with the phone.  They said the phone is ok, but one of the agents said it's the last update - he has had problems ever since.  He said he thought they are working on fixing it & we should be getting another update to fix it.  Is this true?  I sure hope so!  They also showed me how to reboot the phone, especially when it gets so warm.  Is there anything else I need to do?  Please help!
This is my first iPhone and I am very frustrated and disappointed in Apple.  If it's the software, I would think they would be frantically trying to fix it.  This phone was not the cheapest phone, so the battery life should be better!

After some troubleshooting, I decided to order a new battery.  I replaced the battery and was then able to get it to restore, however--after I restore it and it comes time to restart the phone, it gets stuck and doesn't turn on.
Sorry, your repair ruined the iPhone.
She does not have apple care and even though she loved this device, she isn't going to buy another iPhone because of all the problems shes had with this one (it's just over a year old).
After you ruined the iPhone with DIY, Apple won't touch it anymore. You should have asked before all these had happened.
I'm an android user myself and I love rooting/flashing new ROMS, so if jailbreaking her phone or doing some kind of super-restore with 3rd party programs might help, I'm all for it-
Yeah, all Android user can think of is Jailbreaking, read this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743
