IPhone 3G/4G vs. WiFi battery life.

Ok, so obviously using WiFi over 3G/4G will increase your battery life on any device.  However the question I have is with regard to how the iPhone and iPad manages those connections.  If I go into settings and toggle my WiFi on and toggle 3G/4G/Cellular Data off, WiFi is the only internet connection protocol on, which betters battery life.  However, what happens to my battery life if I toggle my WiFi on, and leave 3G/4G/Cellular Data on?  Does the iPhone intellegently turn off cellular data while using WiFi in order to achieve that same increase in battery life?  Or does the device leave both WiFi and cellular data on, destroying battery life?  Or does something inbetween happen, like WiFi potentially turning off when the phone goes into standby?
I've been curious about this for a while and I've gotten many different answers from people, ranging from genius bar employees to iOS software developers.
I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering this.
Thanks, guys.

I have this problem also since V3 - but it is just a display problem, the actual battery life is fine. It most commonly fails to recharge (on the display menubar) though the display on full-screen is fine. A reset restores it but the problem will recur.
More seriously the same problem affects phone connection; we are near the edge of coverage and the menubar will show 'no coverage' even in a strong signal until the phone is reset (it never changes on its own). Sometimes it seems this is true (that is the phone does not connect) other times it seems just the display.

Mail is 44% of the battery - I get about 300 emails through MSexchange and 25 through hotmail and .25 from cogeco.
Home & Lock Screen is 19%

Is there a bug in mail or is it just too much volume?

I see the same thing after upgrading to ios8 on my iphone 4S.
In my case, Mail is 76% of my activity. Disabling my mail accounts allows me to go back to my once a day charging routine. Otherwise, my battery runs down from 100% to 9% in 3.5 hours. I have two mail accounts. One exchange based the other is gmail.

  • Any iPhone 4S users experienced better battery life after upgrading to iOS 7.1?

    Hello
I am curious to know if any iPhone 4S users experienced better battery life compared to iOS 7.x.x.? That will be great to know before I upgrade and give up my JB .
    Thanks!

Really, that's quite an assertion. I'm sure you can prove those stats; but  my apologies,  I forgot that Apple produces flawless product.
I can only report MY SYMPTOMS: iPhone 4S 32M on VZW, upgrade to iOS 7.0 at the end of February (when security flaw was announced), after which my battery life is about 1/2 what it used to be before the upgrade.
Also, as reported above, when I upgraded to iOS 7.0 my phone would lock (in phone mode); had uncommanded  reboots; and severely degraded battery life.  Two days ago, upgraded to iOS 7.1.  Most screen "touch" issues appear resolved; and uncommanded reboots resolved.
Battery life / duration still poor; still charging every 4-5 hours.
Previously with  normal use (with no location services) could run a full day, about 8 hours before recharge. Now, same situations, I'm having to recharge after 4-5 hours.  Again, no new apps, all apps are current; no different usage.
    What's the resolving fix?

  • Is it normal for iPhone 4S to lose 1% battery life after 2-3 minutes of using?

Is it normal for iPhone 4S to lose 1% battery life after 2-3 minutes of using? So in 2 hours, 24 minutes usage and 15 hours, 17 minutes  in standby mode, the battery became 68%...

    sounds plausable
also you can't really 100% trust it's batt% batteries are an analog technology the only thing the iphone can judge how much batt is left is by measuing amp amount the batt is producing and then over time estimating how long before it's zore
but anyway Its not wise to not put a battery for charge before bed when it's 12%
if your reason is you think it's good for batteries to be empty before charging then you believe in a myth and in the process damaging the battery in your ios device

  • Please help. iPhone 5s stuck on 67% battery life.

I Bought my husband a white iPhone 5c yesterday for his birthday. Last night he put it on the charger and it fully charged to 100%. Today, it got down to 67% and hasn't moved since about 2 pm today. It's now 8:39pm. It will show that it ran ouT of battery life and show the screen with the battery and little lightening bolt. When he plugs it up it will turn right back on to 67%. We have tried the reset, (hold home button & lock button) it did not help. Now, we're trying to run it down. And it's actually coming down. We are playing music threw a aux cord, have wifi & Bluetooth on and it jumped to 43%. Does anyone know what causes this ? And what can help it? I feel awful cause I just bought the phone yesterday. And it's already acting up.

    Hello LynzieMichelle21,

It's probably the battery indicator, not the battery itself.  Run it down until it shuts down automatically.  Ignore any low battery alerts that appear.  Then, charge it overnight with the 10W charger.  That should clear things for you.

  • IPad 4 128GB WiFi Battery Life

I bought a brand new 128GB iPad 4 two days ago. I have adjusted just about every setting possible, but my battery life drains like it's use double A batteries. I left home this morning with 75% and within 3 hours (30 minutes of actual use), it was down to below 30% remaining. This is not a good sign, nor does it make me feel better about dropping the $900 on a new iPad. I've seen countless threads about this issue, but none of them seem to help with the problem. I am running iOS 6.1.3. Any ideas? Is Apple addressing this? I know this was an issue with the iPhone 5 when it was first released. But since I use my iPad for work all day long...I've got to find a solution or the thing is getting returned.
    Please help?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W or 12W (5W on Mini) USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (2.5W, most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. • Iphone; best practice for better battery life

Okay, I've searched other threads and can't really find anything definitive on all this. I've found my battery life to be disappointing; I can go one and a half days without wi-fi or bluetooth turned on before it turns off.
    1) Is it true that when I press and hold the 'home' key while in an application the application 'quits.' If so, is this more likely to save battery life? Does an application ever really 'quit?' It strikes me that it doesn't.
    2) If move from safari to home without quitting is that safari page still loading, and thus sucking up battery life ?
    3) If I hold the sleep and home keys at the same time I am able to turn off my iphone. What is the advantage of doing this at all? Has anyone experimented with turning the phone off at night? If so, has anyone noticed a better battery life? Is the iphone even meant to be turned off?
    4) Should I be turning off the iphone to charge it once in a while; the other threads I've read seem to indicate no, however, I thought I would open this up again.

I believe you directed this at me: I called them...I do not have an apple store within a reasonable distance. They sent the loaner phone in a box, waived my rental fee. I sync my phone took out the sim card and put it in the loaner phone, syncd the loaner phone and had all my stuff. put my phone in the box, fed ex picked it up the next day. I tracked it on the apple repair site, it said they were running diagnostics that same day and the next the web site said replacement phone sent and it got to me in a brand new nice little apple box like the original, only smaller. None of the accessories were sent in or replaced. Hope that answers your question.
    Good Luck!

  • Iphone 5 shuts down when battery life still shows 10% left

Install iOS7 on iphone 5 and the device will power down sometimes when it still shows 10-20% battery life then not power back on, while displaying that it should be plugged in. Also the phone will sometimes jump from 20% life down to something like 1-3% on the indicator  in mere seconds and powers off shortly thereafter.
Basically the phone gets down to what shows as 20% battery life and may shut down at any point after that....

This could be because the battery has not been properly calaberated try the link below. http://www.apple.com/nz/batteries/iphone.html

  • My Iphone 4S has far less battery life since before I downloaded IOS 7.1,  Is there a bug in this IOS that wears the battery down faster?

Since I downloaded IOS 7.1 my phone (4S) battery won't last more than eight hours and takes three or four hours to charge.  There must be a bug in this IOS that affects battery life.

  • MacBook Pro Queries with Mavericks (Wifi & Battery Life)

    Hello all !
I have a MacBook Pro (non Retina) purchased last month, running the latest installment of Mavericks.  i7 Core processor, and 16GB of RAM.
Lately, I've been noticing two major issues with the computer that I can't quite diagnose - 1. Wifi Signal Loss, and 2. Battery Life Performance
    1. Wifi Signal Loss-  apparently this has been widespread since the introduction of Mavericks; while the recent update supposedly took care of the wifi signal issues, my laptop continues to suffer, sometimes randomly.  Every other device stays connected constantly to the internet at home, so I know it's nothing to do with the router or house connections.  The computer has an issue with waking from sleep with a wifi signal- it seems the only remedy is turning it off/back on.  I've tried the PRAM and other computer resets, toggling the "Wake for Network Access" functions, creating a new settings group with Wifi signal preference over bluetooth (and BT is always off, by the way,) yet it seems to stall.  Also, at times it just seems to stall.  Only way to fix is turn off/back on the wifi access.
    2.  Battery Life- Seems I should be getting more performance from a MacBook Pro than <2 hours playing with iTunes and Firefox.  The music is on an external hard drive, and I'm just adding files to the library while playing some songs.. however, shouldn't there be superior results?  I'm skeptical at this point.  If I decide to run more intensive programs, such as the Adobe Suites, what will become of its life away from power supply then?
Any assistance and insight is greatly appreciated!!

    No one?
This is getting frustrating, as the battery drains so quickly if simply just web browsing.  does the 16gb ram cause this?

  • IPhone 4 hot and low battery life?

Why does my I phone 4 have such a small battery life? And it is running hot

    Hello Bmay121,
Thank you for providing the details about the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone.  I found a couple of resources that may help address this issue.
First, I recommend following these steps if your iPhone has a short battery life:
    Battery life seems short
Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.
You can find the full article here:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

You can also find useful information about the iPhone's operating temperatures in this article:When troubleshooting temperature, please refer to the following article:
iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch (4th generation): Keeping device within acceptable operating temperatures
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2101
When using the device or charging the battery, it is normal for it to get warm. The exterior of the device functions as a cooling surface that transfers heat from inside the device to the cooler air outside. If the interior temperature of the device exceeds the normal operating range, the device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature. If this occurs, you may notice the following:
    The device stops charging.
The display dims or goes black.
If the temperature continues to be a concern, you can isolate the issue by restoring your iPhone as new:
