IPhone 3G always in use, drains battery

My iPhone 3G is constantly in use and it drains the battery within about four hours. I know it is always in use because I went to Settings > General > Usage and the Usage statistic was equal to the amount of time that I had pulled it off the charger (ex. 48 minutes). The standby time was also the same figure (48 minutes). I did some testing by switching the phone into Airplane Mode. This fixes the problem. For instance, after five minutes, the usage statistic was (48 minutes) and the standby statistic was (53 minutes). In a longer example I did yesterday in airplane mode, the usage was 2 minutes and the standby was 14 hours 20 minutes.
So far, I have tried to solve the problem by trying the following:
1) Turning off 3G and just relying on Edge.
2) Turning mail Fetch settings off, setting all mail (one gmail account, one Exchange account) options to Manual
3) Turning WiFi off
4) Turning Bluetooth off
5) Turning Location Services off
None of these have solved the problem. My problem is not a battery life issue because the phone keeps a charge when I'm in airplane mode. This started all of the sudden about a week ago. I have not downloaded any new applications recently.
Can anyone help solve this mystery?

Michael Allbritton,
I would have thought that setting the Fetch option to Manual would stop all push notifications from Exchange. So the idea to adjust the settings on the email client seem redundant. Regardless, the Exchange server is my company's server and they wouldn't let me adjust settings.
Padernatrish,
I think you're on the right track with wondering whether this is an update issue or the phone. That's my suspicion. My phone worked fine before updating the phone software.
Bennybeanbag,
Yes, I tried a Restore (as new) in iTunes. No luck.
I didn't attempt to try any other solutions because I just caved and bought a new phone while also switching from AT&T to Verizon. I'm not happy about this solution, but it did solve the problem. So, that would be evidence that kittiposte's conspiracy theory may have something to it. Good luck to the rest of you who are still struggling with this issue. I'd be interested to hear if everyone else broke down and just got a new phone, too.

I have shutt down all the applications that could drain battery in the background and i made a reset of device.
I haven´t got any waranty left.
What more can i do? It´s still dosent work the way i should..

    Hello Igor,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  I would be concerned too if my iPhone were heating up and losing battery life quickly.  There are a few articles I found that might help with what you are experiencing on your iPhone.
The first thing I recommend is quitting open applications.  You can find an article with the steps to that here:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5137
If you are still experiencing the same issues on the iPhone after quitting all the apps that are currently open, follow the steps below:
    Battery life seems short
Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.

    I hope this helps!

  • IPad iOS 8.1 Mail constant network use draining battery

Since updating to iOS 8.1, iPad Mail is rapidly draining my battery. When I go into Mail the network usage indicator (spinning wheel) runs constantly. I left it this way by mistake while traveling and it drained the whole battery with minimal actual usage in one day -- I usually only have to recharge every 2-3 days.
I have checked the battery usage indicator in Settings and it shows that in the last 24 hours Mail used 54% of the battery. I had changed no settings, but went into Mail & Calendar settings and double-checked them, and they were as they had always been. I have three email accounts: Gmail, Verizon, and a company account on an Exchange server. It's the only one that was set to Push, but now I've set it to Fetch like the others and it still continuously accesses the network when I'm in Mail.
This must be a bug of some kind introduced by a recent OS or app update, right? This never happened before, and nothing else has changed in my usage of the iPad or Mail.
One other issue: Mail is not actually fetching new mail when it should. I see new mail show up on Mac Mail hours before it appears on the iPad. Normally email would arrive almost simultaneously on my iPhone and iPad, then a moment later on the Mac. Now the phone is still first, but the iPad lags. The only way I can get the iPad to refresh in real time is to close the app and restart it.
Is anyone else seeing this behavior with the recent update? Any idea how to fix it?

    Found a solution at: http://webcamsocialshopper.com/iphone-battery-suddenly-draining-try-this-non-res tore-method
Short version, remove your Exchange account, shut down phone, restart, add the Exchange account back. Problem solved.

  • IPhone 4s heats up and drains battery quickly after upgrading to iOS 8.1.2

Last Sunday i.e. on 14-Dec-2014 i upgraded my iPhone 4S (WiFI + 3G, 64GB) to iOS 8.1.2. Since then my iPhone's battery has started to drain out abnormally fast (it doesn't even last an hour after charging it fully to 100%) and the phone even heats up simultaneously. When checked under Settings> Usage> Battery Usage, i found the app-wise usage of battery like this: Phone (Audio) 36%, WhatsApp-24%, Home & Lock Scree-17%, Settings-7%, Messages-5%, Mail-4%, TOI-2%, Conatact-2%, and rest few apps 1% each. Prior to upgrading the iOS to 8.1.2, the battery life of my iPhone was normal: i just had to recharge once in 24 hours with normal usage of the phone. Could anybody help me to fix the problem? Thanks in advance. -BBS Ijam, GTK/SKM/171214

I think iPhone 4s is oLd now we need to update our as I will have to change my battery from repair center maybe this will solve the problem the new iOS are heavy for our phones.
*** I also have extra internal battery cover for my iPhone. I can't go out without that cover because my iPhone battery drain so fast from 100% it will be maybe 60 % so fast that is so annoying.
Long story short my iPhone is screwed up I think I don't trust my iPhone battery anymore.

  • IPhone not charging and using more battery power while on charger and getting hot

I have an iPhone 4 and have had issues with it charging.  This has happened 3-4 times over the past few months, where I put it on the wall charger prior to going to sleep and wake up with 17-20% battery power.  Last night I placed it on the charger with approximately 70% battery power.  I believe it charged to 100%, I left it on the charger and when I woke this morning the phone was hot (hotter than charging it with the USB) and the power was at 17%.  Any suggestions on what I can do to rectify this issue?  After the iOS upgrade it did and I reset the phone, ran the power completely out and charged 100%.  I don't have any more apps open than usual.  Thanks for any help you can provide!

Having a similar problem with my 3G IPhone.  Battery life is fine but once I plug it in to charge it won't charge.  I have to reset my phone and then it will start to charge as long as I unplug it and then plug it in again.  This problem is something that is intermittent.  I reinstalled the firmware but the problem did not go away. Something that I have noticed is that when this takes place usually the GPS function cannot find my current location at the same time. Once the phone is rest the GPS is fine. The fact that I have reloaded the firmware and the problem has not gone away leads me to think that this is a hardware problem. Well we will see soon I am going to take it in to get checked out. This is sort of annoying but I love the IPhone it is great!!!!

some thing is runnng in the back ground. Or your email is struck. Deleted all emails and reboot phone and add them one by one. Or your sim cards has problem. Replace sim card. If nothing works drain battery then recharge battery to 100% full charge.

  • IPhone 6 (iOS 8.1) hot and is draining battery, even on standby.

    Greetings Everyone,
I'm having a really bad time here with my iPhone 6 4.7" iOS 8.1 device. It all started a few days ago, i was noticing that only at 100% the battery seemed to be just fine, but once it dropped just 1% of the 100% it would drain to 0% in 10 hours standby time. I thought that was kinda odd, so i decided to completely drain my battery till my device turned off to see if it would help to charge from absolute 0. That didn't fix the problem either, i went online and searched around the web for what might cause high battery drains on the device, and i found that restoring the device as a new device should fix many problems, since many apps for the new iOS seemed to drain the battery quite quick due to some bugs or something. So i did that but with no luck. I tried to turn off all background updates, disable parallels effect and what not, and still the battery drained like a maniac EVEN on standby.
I went on and researched some more, i then came across one of the new features iOS 8 supplied, that is the battery usage feature where you can see your battery usage for each individual app as well as up-time on standby and in use. And this is when i discovered something really odd, even after recovering my phone, setting everything to stock, turning off all connections (AirPlane mode) and turned off effects (parallels) which could cause a slight battery drain, and putting the device on standby - both the standby and usage time showed the same amount of usage of 9 hours and 47 minutes. And yes to no surprise my phone is getting really hot, i can feel it through my pants, heating up my thigh.
I have tried restoring it through DFU mode, through iTunes and i'm pretty much out of ideas on how to solve this problem. Anyone has any idea on what might be causing this and how to fix it? Or should i just go to the store and hope for them to replace my device? :-)

I had the same problem. I realized that it had everything to do with my calendar app. My iCalendar was having a difficult time fetching information from my Outlook and Yahoo Calendar. Causing my battery percentage to decline at a very rapid rate. (50% in a 4 hour time frame). I resolved the  problem by going into my Settings >" Messaging , Contact , Calendar" Setting > Clicking on one of my selected Accounts ( Outlook or Yahoo) and turning off the Calendar Sync. The problem seemed to go away after doing this. Now I'm only using 4% battery life in a 4 hour time frame in StandBy Mode. Well I Can only hope that this will help resolve the battery drainage issue. Good Luck ....

  • Iphone 6, iOS 8.0.2, battery drain & overheating

So I upgraded to an iphone 6 from an iphone 5. The phone came with iOS 8.0.2. It seems that I am not the only one with this issue but my my phone gets hot after a short use and battery drains rather quickly. It seems to be a software issue since many people are exhibiting the same symptoms. My battery usage shows that the Home & Lock Screen ate up 26% of the battery and my settings ate up 22%. That seems a tad high. Battery is at 84% after 56 min usage and 4 hr 14 min at standby. Note this is on the initial charge after transferring my data from the iphone 5 to the iphone 6. Battery has not fully drained yet. What do you guys suggest? Thanks.

I have a similar problem on my 5s. Since updating it has stopped allowing me to send texts to my wive, but will accept them and allows calls.
I must add that I can text her when on wifi, and also from my mac, but when on 4g?
    Any ideas?

  • HT201401 My iphone 5 always shuts down between 20-10% battery life...It drives me crazy

My Iphone 5 always shuts down between 10-20% battery life...

In response to the other posts, I have not had any issue with the battery until the update to IOS7 and I have been using the phone for over a year.   I am not suprised that the store would say the battery was bad, the phone thinks it is and shuts down.   I do not know what plugging it in does for the phone, but after I plugged it in for just a few minutes it lasted for several hours.   it was not that the battery was dead, but how the camera works with the system on IOS7.   I do not know if taking a picture and saving it while using the flash cause a large draw etc, but whatever it is the system then thinks the battery is dead when it isnt.    The hard part is once you apply power it will go away and there is no way to verify the issue.   Even if it is weaker battery it should not just shut off with 20% power and then not work until power is applied.   The battery is not dead as it has worked for several hours afterward.   I have not used the camera in those cases for fear of losing my phone until I could get to a power cord.  I am not aware of it happening twice in a row, but I will test it next time I am near a power cord after it dies.   I would also concur, that this is a quick failure for the battery also as the phone is just over a year old.

  • So my iPhone 4S started draining battery after recent update, battery got changed and it worked perfect for 3 days, all of a sudden the phone won't stay on unless connected to mains... Cannot receive any signal "searching" constantly. HELP

So my iPhone 4S started draining battery after recent update, battery got changed and it worked perfect for 3 days, all of a sudden the phone  shut down and now won't stay on unless connected to mains... Claims its at 100% battery but thats impossible as it was at 30% before it shut down randomly.
Cannot receive any signal "searching" constantly.
Turns off as soon as removed from usb ... wont stay on connected to laptop!
    HELP!

The iPhone includes a one year warranty. If an Apple store is not nearby, you can call AppleCare and handle an exchange under warranty over the phone. The exchange will be shipped to your door - someone must sign for the delivery so if no one will be at home, have it delivered where you work. You use the same box to return the existing iPhone back to Apple. Return shipping label and tape to reveal the box incuded - call the carrier with number incuded when the box is ready to be picked up. AppleCare will request a credit card in the event the existing iPhone is not returned within 10 days after the exchange under warranty is received.
Hardware can fail - it happens, which is why there is a one year warranty.

  • Drained battery with iPhone 3G 3.0 upgrade

I loaded the new 3.0 software a few days ago with no problems. Today I found that my "turned off/ idle" phone in my pocket had gone to the new Apple recorder program and has been recording for 58 minutes by the time I discovered it. So unknown if this will be a source of battery drain by a program starting on its own (buggy?).

    mine lasts a lot.
this is pretty much the daily use of my iPhone3G using 3.0 for a week.
i work from 7am to 4PM, one hour break time in that timeline , its on standby for 8 hours , on break time i pretty much make heavy use of Youtube , Safari and Mail among other Apps like IM+ and sometimes some games, after my work day i still have almost 50% of battery left.
    my settings
    Push is set to manual
Notifications are On and have 4 apps on it
the internet connection is always 3G
so my guess is that you guys do heavy use of your phones all day or maybe you guys are leaving the Safari , Mail and IPod apps running in the background.
test this and see if your battery lasts longer.
after every use of Safari , Mail or IPod before putting your Phone into standby do this, open safari, then press and hold the top button until you see the slide to power off option, release that button and now hold down home button (square) , after 6 seconds it will return to the home screen and Safari will be closed now ,do the same for Mail and IPod, open mail press top button until off slide , hold home for 6 seconds , then open Mail , hold top button until off slide then home for 6 seconds, now apps that don't shutdown like Safari , Mail and IPod will shutdown and the phone will use less battery while on standby. if you open them again they will again remain open and drain battery.
there was a function on 3.0 when it got announced that it would close every app to save battery, people complained about it, apple listened and removed that function. now only Safari ,Mail and IPod apps stay processing and wasting battery in the background.

  • IOS 8 SEVERELY draining battery on iPhone 5

Is there any way to fix it??
My Home/Lock screen racks up 47% of my battery usage since updating, while the background/app refresh, location services, and other features that drained battery in iOS 7 are turned off.
My battery has gone down by 5% within just 10 minutes of my phone sitting there, having absolutely nothing done to it.
Whenever I click the home button after about a minute or so, it goes down by a percent (sometimes two).
So my phone isn't even going to last me an hour of usage after this "upgrade"?

As much as I love getting a new gadget, I respect our environment more. So I'm holding on to my iPhone 5, 16GB because it's worked so well for the last 2 years and is still going strong. I charge it every night and at the end of the day I usually have 20% battery left. But that was before the iOS 8.0.2 update...
Now my phone lasts 4 hours and over heats. It died 3 times yesterday with normal use. The only variable is iOS 8.0.2
I looked up forums and found "tips" that are more like work-arounds. I tried resetting all settings which didn't work. All it did was give me annoying settings like 2 reminders for one SMS, location services off, and I lost my favourite lock screen photo of my two children (even though it said "no data or media will be lost"  ).
I checked the settings for apps that are using most battery. Phone and lock screen are the top two. Lock screen?? Seriously??
I remembered that when I use GPS apps (ie. TomTom or Google Maps), the phone (just feels like any other "phone" now without the "i") would heat up in the same way it does now. So I snooped and found a little switch hidden deep, deep down in Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services (scrolled down to the very, very bottom) and there was a switch for Status Bar Icon. I turned this ON and paid attention. It would turn on by itself on the lock screen. I thought that maybe Siri is using it? So I went into Settings > Privacy > Location Services and turned Siri's location access OFF.
The phone cooled down almost instantly. I'm charging it now and will update below on how I go, if anyone's interested...
Let me know how you go with this?

  • Hotmail account drains Battery on iphone - process loops indefinately

Apparently the migration from Hotmail to Outlook by Microsoft, which took place during the last 2 months has created an incompatibility issue causing some iphone process to be looping indefinitly thus using up battery.
My battery on my iphone 4 was draining in a few hours and turning hot while not doing anything (idling).
I downloaded lAssistant (with an L not an i) and noticed that before i deleted my hotmail account, the activity of the CPU while my iphone 4 was not doing anything, was 35-40% while AFTER i deleted my hotmail account the activity dropped to 4% and the battery returned tom normal drain.
My Iphone 4 returned to normal operation after
    1. removing my Hotmail account from settings->mail,contacts->accounts->(choose hotmail account) Delete Account,
    2. turning off my  iphone 4
    3. turning on my iphone 4
    4. Re-adding my Hotmail account
The battery has STOPPED draining and getting hot.
Now if this was done by Microsoft on purpuse or not is another issue........ Apple should fix this bug immediatelly.

What bug?  There was an issue in the setup of the account or possibly an email stuck in the out of constantly trying to send. Removing and re-adding the account resolved the issue.
Sorry, but there is no issue. Therefore nothing for Apple to fix.

  • 7.1 update drains battery on iPhone 4, can I revert to previous version?

Ever since I updated to IOS 7.1 (I can't find the version number on the iPhone itself) like many users, my battery no longer lasts 3 days, but drains at about 3%/minute, even with all the apps and location services switched off. Can I revert to the previous version please? And, if so, how? Thank you for allowing me to use the phone without switching the entire phone off 99% of the time! Thank you for any assistance that you can give me on this very frustrating problem, over which Apple is sure to lose customers!

yes there is a way. i figured it out a few days ago. first download the firmware 4.0 from a site. then go into itunes with your phone plugged in AND ON (do NOT put in recovery mode).. hit shift, update. find the 4.0 firmware you just downloaded. it will take a minute but you will downgrade right back down to 4.0. when it completes, a screen should pop up saying there is a new update available (4.0.1) & asking if you want to update. CLICK CANCEL. then you're done! if you want to make sure it worked, go to your phone--go to settings-about-software. it should say 4.0. hope i helped
