Iphone 3g Identity

My iphone works perfectly with my router but shows up with the device name "unknown"
Can I name it? so that the router will the name I give to it? just as it does other devices connected to it.
I have named it in the bluetooth settings so if someone in range does a bluetooth search they will see its name, but in wifi it is unknown. The mac address confirms it is my device but would just like to have it named.
I also have an ipod touch which shows up as "ipod"
Any thoughts? anyone know how you can name an iphone for wifi identification?
Thanks

I believe you will see this message when there is a WiFi base station that is broadcasting it's SSID and is unencrypted. It appears to be that the iPhone is trying to verify a digital certificate, typically used by an SSL transaction. That's when I see it - at work when connecting to one of the WLAN broadcast points. It's sort of goofy though as there is no WEP/WPA/WPA2 encryption being used by the base station, so not sure why this message is being displayed.
Perhaps, this occurs because the iPhone is attempting a Web transaction (see the 'http://www.apple.com' that appears at the top of the window when this message is displayed). The iPhone will attempt to make a Web connection in order to prompt you for a userid / password if needed by the base station to access the Internet.
Same thing happens when you are at an airport or other public Wi-Fi provider. You just don't see the error message, but see a login screen typically instead.
So, I think the message is rather bogus, as I can normally login to my work WiFi after choosing continue.
Net Net : Someone added a WiFi base station in at your work and you are seeing this message because your iPhone is attempting to connect to the Internet through the new base station. You can choose to turn off the feature of automatically attaching to new WiFi networks in the General settings area.

  • Replacement of iPhone with identation on the back of it

Recently, my Iphone accidentally fell off while I was charging it. There was indentation of the back of the phone.
I also found out after that incident, my Iphone cannot be charged to 100% for a few times, eg. It remain constant at 98%.
My apps also loaded slower after that.
Can I get a replacement of iPhone because of the stated reasons above?
Or I have to get myself a new phone?
    Thanks!

The back of the iPhone 4 is glass...AFAIK, you don't "dent" glass...so I don't quite understand what you're talking about here.

If your phone is in fact damaged because of this fall, such damage is not covered by warranty. Thus any replacement will be at your expense unless you have some kind of insurance coverage.

  • HT1766 why won't itunes do a complete backup of my iphone so that my new iphone is identical to my old one?

i plug my phone in, and right click on it and select backup. Then plug in my new one and restore it from the latest one, but it won't back the apps up. Contacts, calender, music, etc - all good. Just not apps.

  • Can 2 iPhones be synced to the same computer?

I have had an iPhone 3G for the past 2 years, and just bought an iPhone4.
Can I give the 3G to my wife and sync both iPhones to the same iTunes library on ONE computer? Or need she sync to her own iTunes library on her laptop?
We have the same Contacts and Calendar etc on our laptops (through MobileMe), and I would love it if both iPhones behaves identical, i.e. that they had the same content (including the Apps that I downloaded/bought). Is this possible?
Thanks for any pointers/help/suggestions. Cheers, Veit

Thanks for the clarification and sorry for the follow-up question: I assume that the iTunes account needs to be on ONE and the SAME computer, or can the same iTunes account reside on TWO separate laptops?
(Just curious, is there a paper that introduces the grand concepts of iTunes without going too much into detail? E.g. that many devices can be synced to one iTunes account; that one iPhone can ONLY be synced to ONE account; etc. etc.)

  • I have iPhone 4S 16GB using v. 6.1.3 & Macbook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo OS 10.6.8

Today I added a new entry in my Address Book on Macbook and also edited an entry on my iPhone Contacts.  I have tried syncing several times and neither is updating on the other device.  Makes me wonder how many other entries are not synced.  Any ideas?

Sorry, I did not make myself clear.  I am asking for help with the problem of unsuccessful syncing.  In the past (after I finished syncing) the Contacts on my iPhone were identical to the entries in Address Book on my Macbook.  Yesterday I discovered some entries that did not succdessfully sync.  I am asking for help with this problem.

  • Where can i get a iphone 5s user manual that is specific to the ATT iphone 5s?

I'm looking for a user manual that is specific to the ATT iphone5s. All I can find is the generic manual from the apple site. There must be one that specifically addresses all the features, icons and apps on the ATT version.  I also own a Samsung Galaxy 4S and I was able to download the ATT manual for this phone, so there must be one for the ATT iphone 5s somewhere?  Can anyone help?  Plaese don't say go to ATT, they were no help at all.

The iPhone 5s manual is here:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1565/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf
There is no carrier specific version as there is no real difference between carrier specific phones. The hardware and OS are exactly the same. There are no additional AT&T apps or features for iPhones that would be pre-installed. iPhones are identical across the board.
Any Additonal AT&T apps can be downloaded from the App Store and would have their own Help or guide to use them.

  • Still can't create my IMAP GMAIL account on new 3G iPhone

I've read a lot of the posts on this issue and have tried to follow the steps provided by GMAIL on the settings tab, but to no avail. I've also already tried the "Captcha Unlock" (which I don't understand, but oh well), but no good. The GMAIL account settings for my 3G iPhone are identical to my 2G iPhone's settings, but I can't get it to work. I always end up with "unable to connect to the IMAP server". Anyone else having this persistent problem? Thanks.

I think I might have figured out my own problem, although it only raised a new question. Turns out that my password for Gmail (which was complex) included spaces, which I'm now thinking might not be recognized all that well by the iPhone keyboard in 2.0.2. Sure enough, when I changed my Gmail password to something WITHOUT spaces, and then entered that information into the mail account settings, all went smoothly. The new question, of course, is why doesn't the old password with spaces work with the 3G iPhone when it worked just fine on the 1Gen iPhone? Things are fine now, but the curiosity has gotten the better of me, and I'm curious if anyone else might have some insight into this. Thanks.

  • IMAP fine in Mail; "Connection to the Server Failed" on iPhone?

So on my Mac, I have both GMail (works great on iPhone) and an IMAP account for my work's Exchange server set up.
Both accounts work just fine on my Mac; I don't even need to connect to the VPN on my Mac to read Exchange email via IMAP through Mail.
The problem is that the iPhone gives me the "connection to the server failed" whenever I try to connect on either EDGE or wi-fi to read the IMAP Exchange email. The settings in both Mail and the iPhone are identical.
If I turn on the VPN on the iPhone, I get the same message...but at this point, I'm thinking the VPN on the iPhone is worthless.
Can anyone think of a reason why the iPhone can't connect to IMAP even though the laptop can? I'm wracking my brain here trying to figure this out. The purchase of 2 iPhones for other staff to use depends on me getting this up & running! I can tell you that the others will NOT accept "setting up a Yahoo!/GMail account for forwarding. They want their email coming in & responses going out with the company's headers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

This morning, I was able to fully "unlock" and "open" the correct ports (I believe), and now I'm able to receive email from the IMAP Exchange server. According to the IT guy who's helping me, we opened ports 143 and 25 on the ISA server (firewall), and I'm able to receive. Does this sound right to you?
The only problem now is sending. I cannot send any mail through this work account on the iPhone. Mail just "hangs." I can still send/receive just fine on my iBook Mail account for Exchange (IMAP), but no dice on sending.
The Incoming Mail Server and SMTP/outgoing Server addresses are identical. Works fine on the Mac, but not the iPhone. I do believe the 143 port is now fully open...I think.
Am I still missing something? Thanks for your help!

  • IPHONE WONT UPDATE EMAIL

This morning I noticed that my btinternet.com emails had not updated on my iPhone although they had on iPad and iMac.
I tried powering off and on again, no solution.
Next I deleted the email account and then reinstalled it. Again, no solution and all emails which were in the various files within the account have disappeared but just on the iPhone.
My IMAP account info and incoming mail server settings on iPad and iPhone are identical and my wife's btinternet.com email account on the iPhone continues to work.
Although the files within my account have returned on the iPhone it states at the bottom of the screen that the Inbox was last updated on Saturday (today is Monday).
    Any ideas???

    Try this fix.
-->>you'll need a computer to log in to you yahoo! mail.
-->>after logging in with you username and password (computer) on the top right you'll see "Hello (your name)" CLICK ON IT
-->>on the left panel you'll see "account security" CLICK ON IT
-->>check iF you have  "Two-step verification  Additional security." TURNED ON
    HERE'S THE PART TO FIX:
if you switch it OFF you can set up your yahoo mail on apple device with no prob.
if you switch it ON yahoo will generate a ONE TIME PASSWORD for your device set up. (this adds additional security to your phone)
*I highly recommend you do the ON option
    to set it ON:
    -->> switch the ON for Two-step verification/
-->>have a nickname for your device ex "mike iphone5"
    -->>click "generate password"
-->>a long password of random letters will pop (this password will be the password when you set up your email on your ios device)
*it is to be used one time only.
-->>go to your device set email as usual.. then for the password use the long password yahoo provided.
    THAT'S IT! HOPE IT HELP!
!!!! DON'T FORGET TO CLICK THE START I THIS HELPED YOU TO HELP OTHER USERS TOO.

  • Iphone 6 LTE versions

    HI guys,
Apple site shows the LTE bands and frequencies for each iphone 6 version.
HEre in Portugal LTE is transmitted in 1800, 2600 and 800MHZ, as I noticed from apple LTE info page, all of the iphone 6 versions support thEse LTE frequencies. Does this mean that if I buy either versions of the (unlocked) Iphone 6 from the USA they will work fine here in Portugal. Is it?
    thanks

    Previous US market iPhones do not work outside of North America on LTE;
expect the iPhone 6 will be the same. While the frequencies listed are the same,
the protocols used by the wireless providers are not identical and are not compatible
nor is the internal iPhone hardware identical between models meant for various
    markets.
It does not appear that unlocked iPhones are being offered for sale now, so you
would not be able to use an iPhone locked to a US wireless provider in your country.

  • IPAD 2 Won't Charge on USB port on my laptop, my desktop Mac but will charge via the wall plug

I am confused on what to do with my IPAD 2.  It won't charge via my USB Port on my PC that I travel with.  Also I just purchased a new desktop Mac and it will not charge on that USB port either.  But it will charge via the Wall Plug that came with it.  I am worried when I travel to different countries to use the wall plug.  I have an adapter to switch power.  I am from Canada and travel oversees where the power is 240 vs the 120 at home.  If I use my plug adapter and plug in my ipad to the wall Will I destroy the battey in my IPAD 2.  I love my ipad to travel with but it is very frustrating when it will not charge on my PC or on the airplane.  Then I am afraid to use the wall plug in the airport because of the difference in power.  Would really appreciate some help here because I am oversees 2 weeks a month and only get a couple days use of my IPAD.  I have all my books and everything on it and need to be able to recharge it.  Does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Confused!!!!

For better future reference, you should be aware that the voltage means nothing when it comes to charging power. All that that is telling you is that the Power Adapter will work across that voltage range, i.e., you don't need a transformer to plug it into the outlet (although you may need different plugs, which is a separate topic).
What matters is the amperage (A) and the power in watts (W). The Power Adapter puts out 2 A @ 5 VDC (volts DC), which means it's producing 10 watts of power. It will output that across the entire voltage range.
A high-power USB port on a PC will put out 0.5A @ 5VDC, or 2.5 W. Be aware that not all of the ports on any given PC are likely to be putting out even that much power, at may well be putting out less than half as much. That's why you'll often see the "Not Charging" when plugged into a USB port, especially on Windoze laptops, and why it will charge very slowly even when it works.
FYI, the charger which is sold with the iPhone looks identical, is called the same thing, but only puts out 1A. It will work on the iPad but will charge more slowly. By that same token, the iPad charger will charge an iPhone just fine, it will just charge faster.

  • My i phone 4 is water damaged and it is working but network not shown so please help me

my i phone 4 is water damaged and it is working but network not shown so please help me

A replacement iPhone is usually a refurbished iPhone that has received new battery and case and repair of anything that may have been faulty.  The refurbished iPhone is indistinguishable from a new iPhone.  A number of the regulars on here prefer the refurbished Aplle products because they have been so thoroughly tested.
A replacement iPhone is identical to the original, same color, capacity, and so on.

  • Movies - even apple's own - not synching

Repost: probably not suited to the camra, photos and video forum
Okay, I've used up all the (limited) options I can think of here.
I have mp4 files in my iTunes movie in-tray. These files are formatted correctly (tested using iPod Touch with OS3.0) and include Apple's own test files from their diagnostic forum AND my iPhone's own .MOV fies).
These refuse to synch to the iPhone.
    a) the iPhone movie folder will not display a tag in the main synch series of windows. The empty Video folder does show, and only offers me the "all TV shows" synch tab option.
    b) videos will not drag to the movies menu that pops up under my iPhone's identity in the left panel when the drop-down-tab is activated. I get the circle-with-slash "not permitted" symbol when attempting to drag files here.
Movies are working on my iPhone: I have been able to watch it's own recordings and downloaded podcasts.
    I have:
    a) Used Apple's built-in diagnostic. No erros
    b) Used Apple's diagnostic web page. No help
    c) Restored and reloaded the iPhone operating system
Still unable to upload movies to the phone.
Naturally, the company I bought the phone from has no idea beyond phone account activation...
    Any ideas?

My first link shows the movie library. The files include apple's diagnostic files that are rated for use on this iphone, and a video presentation file of mine that works on the iPod Touch under OS3

Second link shows the window with the iPhone synched.
The files are sitting in the movies library in the top left. But will not display in the Movies window under the iPhone identity and the Movies tab under the main screen which was there under the iPod has vanished.
