IPhone 3G Lack of compatibility with Alpine CDE-9852 car stereo system

So I have a Alpine CDE-9852 car stereo system along with the Alpine iPod adapter in my 1994 Toyota Celica and I've come across a little problem ever since I upgraded to iPhone 3G. See, when I had my 2G iPhone and plugged it in via the dock connector, my car's stereo system played what was playing on my iPhone. When I answered phone calls the music stopped and then continued when the call ended. Most importantly, when I was plugged it, my iPhone charged itself. Everything was great!
When I bought my iPhone 3G though, something changed. My system still plays songs from my iPhone, stop when a call comes in, and continues when the call ends, BUT my phone no longer gets charged! I've tried messing around with the phone, but no luck. So I'm assuming there is a compatibility issue, and I realize a firmware from Alpine is highly unlikely, so my question for you all is: Am I out of luck on this or is it possible that something can be done to allow my 3G to charge via the car's ipod adapter? Also, could Apple solve this issue, by adding more compatibility to the next firmware? I would appreciate any feedback and incite on what can/can't be done. I'm planning to write/call Apple and Alpine to try and get to the bottom of this problem. It's just so disappointing that the old phone charged and the new one doesn't. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

So you were right to assume I transposed the numbers, it is the 9857. Thanks for all the valuable info you have given me so far. Now, here is my question, I have an iPod adapter box, that cost me $100. Now I'm not sure what model number this is (I can find out once I go home this weekend), but I can tell you it is an Alpine iPod adapter box. Its what I used to plug in my iPhone for the past year and a half. I bought this back more than 2 years ago though, so I don't know if affects the 2006 compatibility time period, so possibly you could answer that once I get you the model number. So with the 422i, would it replace the ipod adapter I have now, or just change the cable that goes from the adapter to my iPhone? Also, the website talks about it as though it strictly supports iPods, is it compatibable with my iPhone? Also, will I be able to use an phone features with the new cable.
So with the replacement cable you said it will do 5 volt, which is what I need for the iPhone right? I don't have a 120 gb classic, so I'm all set there. As far as connecting my iPhone, playing music from it, and charging it, is this cable my solution?
Also, so the scoche adapter would solve all these issues as well? Including the needed charging area? Finally, do you know if there are any head units out there by alpine or anyone for that matter that would provide me (an iPhone 3G owner) with all the functionality I've been looking for PLUS phone capabilities? I'm not looking to drop an arm and a leg or get a big screen alpine head unit, but something that would broadcast my calls in the car through the system. I realize this might have to include buying a bluetooth unit, but I figure it might be worth it to get all that capability.
Thanks again Jeddix for all your help.

  • IPhone 3G works with Alpine iDA-X200 car stereo

I just wanted to drop a quick note letting folks know that my iPhone 3G works flawlessly with my new Alpine iDA-X200 car stereo. Charging and playing music from the iPhone's iPod work well. As an added bonus I can also play Pandora music through my car speakers with the system. I do get the "This is not a supported accessory do you want to enable Airplane mode?" question but I answer "No" and haven't had a problem.
In case anyone is in the market for a new car stereo to work with their iPhone 3g I recommend the Alpine iDA-X100 or X200 head units.

So I went to the store where I bought my Alpine iDA-X200 and explained what was going on. They seemed to think that is was a problem with all X200s and not just the unit I got - they've had a number of problems with stereos hooked up to iPods and even more so with iPhones.
Well, after playing my iPhone 3G on a demo iDA-X200 for 18 minutes it began to drop out the audio. They were going to call Alpine in the morning and see if they had any advice but before that I plugged in my iPhone 3G into their demo iDA-X100 and let it play. After 35 minutes on the X100 it hadn't missed a beat so I paid the difference and swapped out for the X100. So far I'm pleased but we'll see how things go over the next couple of days - I and hopeful but have my fingers crossed.

  • IPod Touch with Alpine CDE-9852/KCE-422i

    Hello all,
My iPod 4G is about to kick the bucket, so I was thinking about getting an iPod Touch to replace it as my main music player.
I have an Alpine CDE-9852 stereo head unit in my car with the KCE-422i Full Speed iPod cable (has dock connector), which has worked beautifully with my 4G since I bought it in 2006.
Will the iPod touch still work with my stereo? I know the dock connector is the same, but I guess I'm worried that the Touch is too new and won't interface properly with my stereo.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Alpine support says, basically, live with it. I noticed in a review off the Crutchfield Web site that someone else was having the same issue. Actually, what Alpine CS said made sense. The way the unit is set up by default is to repeat the playlist/album that you are listening to in the car (much like many single-disc CD players start replaying the CD when they get to the end). So, when you disconnect the iPod from the hi-speed cable, it's set to replay all. It's really not been much of a problem for me. If I forget to switch it off after removing the iPod from my car, the worse that happens is that it replays whatever playlist/album I listen to the next time I use the iPod outside the car. And, as you and I both agree, it's great save for this one quirk.

  • IPhone won't work well with Pioneer DEH-5900IB Car Stereo

I have installed Pioneer DEH-5900IB recently and have connected my iPhone (firmware ver. 1.1.1) to this car stereo through Pioneer CD-I200 (interface cable for iPod). Then the iphone certainly asked me whether I want to switch to the airplane mode, and I said no. The music played immediately, HOWEVER the iphone could not charge (i.e. no lightening symbol), as well as 5900IB showed the message "error a0" with no playlist showing up. I could still change the song by using the navigation button (i.e. by clicking the wheel left or right side) though. Is there any possible solution to this problem?
I don't really want to connect the iphone to this car stereo via AUX, since the sound quality it could provide was obviously inferior to the direct connection through CD-I200.
Any suggestion, idea or even rumor on this will be really appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hey swkim... I just spent an hour outside fiddling around with the iPhone/Pioneer and I think I may have found a temporary workaround... let me know if this works for you!:
With the car ignition on, and no iPhone attached to the CDi200 cord, for this first time only (to get out of the 'Error-A0' rut) reset the Pioneer reciever (on mine it involves pushing that small indentation with a pen on the front of the receiver). Hard-Poweroff your iPhone (holding the top button until the red slider comes up to power off the iphone and go ahead and turn the iphone off). The receiver should be on in its reset mode (ie. demo mode or whatever). Now, plug in the CDi200 cord into the powered-off iPhone. It should activate the iPhone. Don't press any buttons - just let it power up by itself. In 100% of the cases i've tried this way, the Pioneer Receiver will switch to the iPod state and stay in the Ready functional mode until the iphone fully boots up, and then it will start to play, charge and work normally without the dreaded error-A0!
Now - the trick to getting this to work each subsequent time without having to reset the receiver each time (because if we have to reset the receiver each time it would be pointless - our tuner settings are gone, possibly BTooth settings gone if your receiver has that option, etc):
When you're ready to stop the car or turn off the ignition, do so. Feel free to detach the faceplate, etc if necessary. the Iphone in the cases I tried were still attached to the CD-i200 cord as I turned off the machine. After the receiver powered off, I unhooked the CD-i200 cord from the iPhone. When I was ready to start it up again, I first turned on the ignition, hooked on the receiver faceplate, and allowed it to boot up (no need to 'reset' the receiver). The trick is though that I made sure the iPhone is now hard-powered off again before attaching it to the CD-i200 cord. Now, attach the powered-off iPhone to the cord. it will cause it to turn on and boot up again... but now (in 100% of the times I've tried so far), the receiver will now see it in its Ready state and will work!
Anyways, let me know if this works for you. If this does, it would suggest that the problem may be with how an iPhone left powered-on tells the receiver where to resume playing a song. The upside of this workaround is that it doesn't require a reset of the receiver each time (thankfully) and, while connected in a working state (ie. non error-A0 state), it also survives Source changes so one is free to change to the TUner mode, etc, and back to the ipod source. The downside though is that one has to hard-power off the iPhone each time before connecting it to the receiver (annoying but not a biggy for me as long as this works), and instead of resuming from the spot in the song last played, it starts from track1 since the iPhone was reset (also not a big deal for me). The other downside I found is that, if the order sequence of the above workaround is changed and I end up with an 'error-A0' message, then I have to go back and reset the receiver (annoying since I'd lose my Tuner settings, ?possibly my Equalizer settings, and ?possibly my BTooth device settings on my DEH-7900BT)...

  • How can I get my iPhone 4 w/ iOS6 to Connect bluetooth with my Alpine CDE-133BT Car Stereo?

My iPhone 4 with iOS6 will not send a bluetooth signal to the Alpine CDE-133BT Stereo I installed on my 2006 Toyota Tacoma. It had previously connected with iOS5. I contacted Crutchfield where I opurchased the stereo from and they said this is a common complaint with multiple brands of stereos not being compatible with the new iOS6 update. Has anyone had this issue and has a solution? Or is this something that Apple will have to fix?
BTW, my phone recognizes my stereo as a bluetooth device but the stereo does not recognize the phone.
    Thanks.

Hi I've had my CDE-133BT since July and recently updated to IOS6 on my iPhone 4 (not an S).
I had to hold the BT phone button and forget all the devices paired to the 133BT.
    Then pair the phone again.
I can stream music now however I can't control (change tracks, pause or play from the 133BT).
This is because Alpine needs to update the firmware I believe.
    Hope that helped!

  • My new Ipod touch won't  work  with my Alpine CDE-125BT car stereo.

I bought the new Ipod touch. I am dissapointed because I can't get it to work with my fairly new Apline car stereo. This radio has an ipod cable which worked with my ipod classic. I called alpine they told me to buy the Apple 30 pin to lightnig adapter, I did and it still didn't work. The radio also has bluetooth. I was able to connect  ipod through bluetooth, but music wouldn't play through the radio. Is anybody having the same issue as me and is there any advice. Thanks.

Have you looked at the previous discussions listed on the right side of this page under the heading "More Like This"?
It could be that the car system is not compatible with the iOS on the iPod. Sometimes an iOS update breaks compatibility. I would pursue that with the car system manufacturer. Ask it they tested the car system with a 5G iPod with the adopter.

  • Any ideas on problem with ipod and alpine cde-9881 car stereo

I have an ipod 60gb v 1.2.1 and a new Alpine car stereo with Ipod connecting cable. When connected, the stereo message reads IPod searching. It never assumes control of ipod,or quits searching. I have reset and restored my ipod, had the apple geek at genius bar check it out. My ipod does not play on the alpine ipod ready stereo in my husband's car, nor the stereos in Car Toys. My husband's 30 gb ipod plays on the stereo in his car AND my car. Help! Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this problem? Alpine is telling me it could be a software problem with my ipod, and to revert to an earlier version of itunes. But my husband's ipod works in my car. So I did a restore using his computer and itunes....no luck. am interested in any ideas on a possible solution!!
    Thanks in advance

Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? If not, have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if the message keeps reappearing: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore
Towards the end it says "If after restoring your iPod, the message described above reappears, the iPod drive letter may need to be reassigned. See the "Change the Drive Letter" section of this document for steps to assign a different drive letter" which contains a link to this article: Windows confuses iPod with network drive and iTunes may exhibit strange behavior in relation to the iPod.

  • 2.0.1 dropped audio with Alpine iDA-X200 car stereo

So after about 20 minutes of playback, the iPhone will 'drop audio' for a brief moment .. enough to be annoying. When the iPhone was running 1.1.4 of the OS, I never had the dropped audio problem. But ever since I 'upgraded' to 2.0(and 2.0.1), the dropped audio will occur with the iDA-X200. Any solutions? I've tried Airplane Mode and same problem

Hmmm interesting, I have the x100 and an original iPhone running at 2.0.1. I've noticed a few times that the music 'dropped out' but once I had the audio go totally bonkers, spitting out digital hash mixed with snippets of the song. Since I was driving at the time all I could do was to jiggle the connector and that seemed to work. It hasn't happened since.
I wish I was of more help, but maybe by bumping this topic up a little someone else will chime in...

  • Ipod Video and Alpine CDE-9852 Problem.

I'm having problems with my new Alpine CDE-9852, and my black 60 gig ipod Video (1.11 software verison).
When I first pluged in my Ipod to the unit I got Error 01, my first thought was that I needed to install software on the ipod, but from reading the owners manual I didn't see anything about that.
With the car still running I unpluged the Ipod and pluged it back in, it worked. I Went though the menu's, played all kindas of songs, no problems.
When I got home I thought I would play with it a bit, because it takes forever to go throw all my songs.
Then it just stoped working, getting Error 01, sometimes it would connect and get the check mark, but you couldn't control the Ipod, sometimes it would connect with the alpine logo showing my ipod, but when I go from track to track in a playlist it would crash and give me Error 01.
I have noticed that it would connect if I played a song on my Ipod but paused it, connected it to the cable, then started the car.
But it would still soon crash.
I just bought the unit from bestbuy today, I'm going to go back tomorrow and see if they can replace it or something.
maybe the cable needs to be repluged in.

I'm still going to go to bestbuy today and see if I can duplicate the issue, with them watching.

  • Can one use  the iphone with car  stereo systems as one does an ipod?

My car has a "jack" for mpegs/ipod to interlace with the existing stereo. Is there an accessory that will allow me to use my iphone as one would an ipod with such systems?

    Dewey Cheatum,
Apple doesn't make most of the adapters out there. Instead Apple provides the specifications so that other manufacturer's can make products that are labeled as "Works with iPhone".
I would contact the manufacturer of the car stereo to see if they have one that is certified by them to meet the "Works with iPhone" standard. If the radio came with the car, then the dealer and car manufacturer would be the resource to utilize.
This link described how manufacturer's can get their products labeled as "Made for iPod" or "Works with iPhone".

  • IPod compatibility for a car stereo system

    Hello,
I am searching for car stereo system that has ipod compatability for my teacher's birthday. Do you have any auggestions? I'm kinda clueless on this stuff.

You need to be more specific. If you're just looking for some kind of interface to work with a radio he/she already has, then I would need to know what kind of radio it is, or if it is a factory radio, I would need to know Make, model and year of the vehicle to give you some ideas. If you are looking for a new radio, then most of your aftermarket radio manufacturers make iPod compatible radios that simply need to have a cable added and you can plug an iPod directly into the new radio and control it with the radio. This allows text to be shown on the radio display as well as charges the iPod. I currently work with Alpine and Kenwood and both of them offer a full speed interface. Full speed is kind of important as some of the older interfaces were slow and cumbersome to operate.
Give me a little more info. and I'm sure I can help you out.

  • My 16g ipod touch not recogonised by Alpine iDA-x200 car stereo

My new ipod touch is not recogonised by my Alpine ida-x200 car stereo. My 30g ipod video works flawlessly. The touch did seem to be recogonised twice, but if the stereo is turned off it's not recogonised again. Alpine says it should work. i have the latest versions of iTunes (7.6.2) Is this a problem with the ipod or the stereo. Can anyone add a little insight to my problem?

Any news on this? I had my old Ipod stolen Monday and went out and got the 16 GB touch and have the same problem. I was told this would work fine. My old Ipod worked like a charm.

  • Alpine CDA-9884 car stereo won't charge iPhone 4. Worked fine with 1st gen

Why can I not charge my iPhone 4 from my car stereo as I have done for the past couple of years with my 1st gen iPhone?
Does the new battery charge differently?

It's the iOS4.0 that is messing it up, I have a 3GS and work at a Car Audio Shop and 100% of every model of every manufacturer does not work with the OS4. Some of these radio were just release less then a month ago built specificaly for iPhones, and after the update to OS4 they no longer function. Same Phone, same radio, different OS different results. Sonys will just sit there frozen with Ipod displayed on the screen. Pioneer Radios will display searching then after a few mins give Error-19. Kenwoods flash Searching.... forever. Alpines display Device Error, the alpine thats made for iphone and pandora never recognize the phone or ipod even if you have the pandora alpine link app running. JVC displays Searching forever. So your going to have to wait 6 months or more before you can get a new radio that can work with the OS4 and iPhone 4. If you have an older iPhone and want to keep your radios working with them, just dont allow the upgrade. Hopefully apple can patch whatever is blocking the comunication ports these radios use, or put the old code they removed back in so they become backwards compatible, but I wouldn't bet on it, if they break your stuff and do nuthing about it you have to buy more stuff, which makes them more money. Just a Heads Up. Was hoping to come here and see some hadn't had the same problems but looks like theres alot of issues with OS4 tbh.

  • Issues with USB connection to car stereo

I just got an iPhone a few weeks ago, and generally it's great, but I have frequent issues when connecting it to my new Pioneer DEH-P3100UB car stereo. I think it may be kind of new in that it doesn't have a "special cable" for connecting to the iPhone, it just uses the typical USB sync cable.
When I see the problem, the stereo reports error 19, which the manual calls a communication failure, and suggests turning the car off and back on, unplugging and replugging the USB device, or switching to a different audio source and then back to USB.
Generally, none of these suggestions work, but power cycling my iPhone always does. This doesn't seem like it should be necessary. Has anyone else had problems like this? Is this a problem with the iPhone software that might be addressed in a future software update?
    Thanks!

    Hey jrbapple,
Keeping your iPhone updated is a good idea. If you iPhone isn't already updated to iPhone software 2.2.1, try updating it now.
