IPhone 3G new update 3.0.1, gave me an error message? can't fix problem!

Okay,
So, I have tried everything (from what I know) to fix this. So, I plug in my iPhone, says there's a new update. I do it, and once it's almost finished it gives me an error message, that said,
''The iPhone ''iPhone'' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (2001)''
which gives me this link http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275
okay, I tried restarting my computer, thought it would fix it.. it didn't. Once I restarted the mac notebook, I reopen itunes, plug in the phone (i turn it on and i see the icon to connect it to itunes) and it says,
''iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. You must restore this iPhone before it can be used with iTunes''
So then, I click OK, then I immediately click Restore on itunes because otherwise it goes away. Then, it looks like its restoring, the phone turns off and displays the apple logo with the loading bar, but nothing happens then it restarts itself and tells me the same error message as before (the unknown error one) and I see the image again telling me to plug in the phone to itunes.
What can I do?!?

nevermind.. I resolved it. Apparently, restarting the mac didn't work. But shutting down completely then turning it on again did. Hah, magic.

When I try to open it, it says the alias is not good, and asks if I want to fix the alias. I'm afraid to do that and lose all access to this document.
Right now, it feels like a ghost document - it is on the computer intact, but it is in an undisclosed location and inaccessible.
Please help!!

I was able to resolve this by repairing permissions, even though no permissions error was listed specifically for that file.
I could also have recovered it through Time Machine, but I'm interested in knowing how not to have this happen again!
I was afraid of rebooting and possibly losing track even of the ghost.
I did not try EasyFind - I'll keep that in mind next time.

If you do not have enough space, then you would have to free up more space.
You can also update via itunes on your computer.

I understand that your iPhone is not booting up past the Apple logo. In this situation, I would recommend working through the troubleshooting steps located in the attached article.
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond or doesn't turn on - Apple Support
If your device gets stuck during startup
When starting up, you might see the Apple logo or a red or blue screen for a long time, or your device might restart again. Try these steps:
Make sure that you have iTunes 12 or later on your computer.
Put your device in recovery mode.
When you get the option to restore or update, select Update. This will reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID: > View Apple ID > Country/Region.
You must have a verified billing address & be located in the country whose store you are trying to use.

I'll reload it tonight when I get home...basically, I bought a new iPhone and downloaded some new medical apps. also had to download an update for iTunes into my mac laptop so I could access iCloud (which was NOT on my prior iTunes software)
When I synched my new iPhone with the newly downloaded iTunes, I registered my iphone and tried to "back it up" to iCloud and the message indicating that "the required file was not found or has a permissions error...." popped up.

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, reset, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.
