IPhone 3G replaced 3 times in 3 months

Has anyone else had major issues with the iPhone 3G? I'm on my FOURTH phone in 3 months, am extremely frustrated and on the verge of going back to Blackberry. I actually like the iPhone when it works. Problem is it has been so incredibly unreliable. Is it that the Apple stores are handing out refurbished phones that previously had a problem? Would like to hear from anyone else who's experienced frustration like this.

Phone #1 was brand new and lasted less than a week. The battery drained incredibly fast even thought I'd turned off location services, wireless, etc. I was told the modem was continually re-setting itself and that the phone needed to be replaced.
Phone #2 lasted 2 months before the battery starting draining very fast again, all incoming calls went straight to voicemail and text messages were delayed from 15 minutes to 3 hours. I started with AT&T, which seemed to get the phone working for a few hours until the behavior started again. Apple told me it was the phone and to bring it in for replacement.
Phone #3 lasted about 3 days before the phone kept giving me a "No Service" and Restore needed messages every few minutes. After a new SIM card and full Restore courtesy of AT&T, the same exact problem started up about 20 minutes later. Called Apple and they said it was the phone ... bring it in. This is about the point I wanted to toss the phone out my car window.
I'm now on Phone #4 ... so far, so good after 4 days. I'm admittedly nervous that it's going to tank on me yet again.
