IPhone 3G, Safari cannot open OWA (Outlook Web Access) to Exchange 2007

Hello, picked up iPhone 3G in hopes of replacing my Windows Mobile 6 phone (AT&T 8525), and first i did was,
a) Installed the my .pfx certificate, appears successful as the certificate showed up under Settings | General | Profile, as identity certificate (although shows up as "Unsigned", not sure why). Verified the details of the certificate and all looks correctly imported, especially the expiration date is correct.
b) Setup Safari to NOT block popup, cleared cache, history and cookies
c) Opened up Safari, and pointed to the following URL,
http://my.company.com/OWA
And i get the "The page cannot be displayed", with Error Code: 401 Unauthorized.
This same .pfx certificate is used successfully in my Windows machine, and using the same OWA URL, using Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari for Windows.
And my Windows Mobile 6 (AT&T 8525 phone) also using the same .pfx certificate has no problem opening up the login page to the OWA, using the same URL.
Can someone help or verify whether accessing OWA through iPhone 3G Safari using the .pfx certificate is NOT supported at this time?
Thanks much!

When you created the PCKS#12 did you create with the full chain? My first suspicion is "unsigned" - this indicates that the phone can't validate what signed this certificate. You may have to import the signing root seperately as I don't know if the iPhone cert store handles chained certs or not.
Secondly, Safari browser is echoing back the 401 message indicating that the server did not accept your credentials. Many SSL implementations require the client to send the full chain (to the root that signed everything) - it makes no sense when the server should have the root and be able to validate this, but I have run into this before.
Since this has worked on your WinMO device I would try the following:
From a desktop PC access your OMA/OWA server - hopefully you have the PFX installed on a desktop
Click on the SSL lock icon and view the certificate hierarchy
Export the root and any intermediate into .CER file
Import the root and any intermediate CER files into the iPhone
The first thing that you hopefully will see is that the Profile cert will no longer say unsigned. If it does not, try re-importing it (pfx) AFTER you install the root(s).
I know that some of this seems un-necessary, but I have done a lot of PKI stuff over the years, but there seems to be very different implementations in key management.
Hope this helps!

    Hello Beckieor,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps and helpful advice concerning network issues:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
Follow these steps to troubleshoot the above issues:
Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your Wi-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.

  • OWA (outlook web access) server character limit

    Hi,
When I try to add the server for my OWA account on the BIS account, it truncates the last portion, as it seems the server name is too long. Does anyone know what the character limit is set to (seems to only allow about 72 characters), or if BB has any plans on increasing this limit any time soon?
    Thank you,
    Ken

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
While I don't know the specific answer to your question, I can offer a potential workaround...
If you have been trying to configure using the device interface to BIS (Setup > Email Settings), then you might try (from a PC/browser) your carriers web interface to BIS. You can find it here:
    http://www.blackberryfaq.com/index.php/Where_can_I_log_into_my_BIS_account%3F
And FWIW here is the OWA configuration KB:

    Hello,
I need to change the outlook web access, but the system is automatically reconfiguring it any time i do. For this reason, i am not able to connect to my outlook mail. Any ideas how to solve the problem?
The automatic outlook web access is webmail.XXX.XXX and what i would need is: https://webmail.xxx.xxx/exchange
    Thank you for any help

    Hi there!
OWA configuration is very tricky...I know that I was never able to configure mine via my device interface to BIS. Only by using a PC/browser to my carriers BIS site was I successful. Here is the list of carrier BIS sites:

And here is the KB with specific OWA instructions -- follow them very very carefully:

  • OWA - Outlook Web Access setup in Mac Mail?

I can setup my company exchange email on my iPhone using the OWA server.
I can't seem to get it to work in Mac Mail.
The settings are very simplistic on the iPhone. What am I missing?
Is it not possible in Mac Mail?

Is your company exchange server running Exchange Server 2007 with service pack 2 rollup 4 or newer? I believe that that is what I read somewhere were the minimum requirements for OWA server in order for SL to be compatible with it. Also, and I could never figure out why, but when I set it up on my work laptop, I had to do it inside our corporate firewall. And I presume that for account type, you have chosen Exchange 2007 not Exchange IMAP? The only other thing that I could suggest is to doublecheck the server name with your I.T. Dept.

  • Safari displays messages in Outlook Web Access (OWA)  incorrectly

I use Safari on my Iphone to view/process my Outlook email. It is a bit cumbersom, but works. However, just recently, it changed. Now, when I open an email, if I press "Reply" (agian this is an OWA) button, it creates a reply, but only shows the orginal message, regardless of how long the string is. So, if sent an original email, got a 'reply' response, then I did a 'reply' to the 'reply', my new message would only contain my original message.
This seems to have changed since the upgrade.
Not sure if this is a natative Safari, or Iphone issue.
I welcome any suggestions as this has made my phone useless for replying to emails.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

    Hi,
The issue has been resolved in Firefox 10 which is scheduled for release in a few days from now. This may happen if the system is missing either Visual C++ 2005 SP1 or the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1. You can try the pre-release Firefox 10 beta: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/ or download and install either [https://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=5638 Visual C++ 2005] or .Net Framework 3.5 SP1.

  • Account lockout due to Outlook Web Access in Exchange 2003

Hi, I am using Exchange 2003 on Windows 2003 server. One of my user AD account got locked out and IT guys checked on DC and told the source for this was OWA.
This user is using three devices to access emails Laptop, IPhone and Tablet PC.
Now they want me to find which device and IP did this. Is there any way to check all that information? I have checked the Security events but did not found any error.
Also let me know if any debuggeing needs to be ON to check it in future and how to do it?

How'd they know it was OWA? Just because the machine has the OWA URL
    on it? What about ActiveSync?

    Mobile devices. Geeze.
Have you checked to see when the most recent sync was for each device?
If one of them stopped syncing recently then it's probably the source
of the problem (probably related to a recent password change).
Using an "old" password won't casue a lockout unless the "old"
password being used is the "Previous+2" password.
    Current password
    Previous password
    Previous+1 password
Previous+2 password <== This is the problem
This is usually found to be some old device that's still charged and
trying to use ActiveSync but hasn't had its password changed in a
    while.
The alternative is someone's trying to log in using a password that's
not the "Current", "Previous", or "Previous+1" password. You should be
able to find the failures in the IIS log files.
I'd ask him to power off the mobile devices and see if the lockouts
stop. iPhones and iPads are a PITA. They don't stop trying to login if
they fail, they just keep banging away!

  • Cannot contact Exchange Server or open Outlook Web Access in Safari

I am a small business user operating in an Exchange environment and have been having some connectivity problems:
    1. Mail: I have been able to connect to and download emails from my Exchange server in Mail (both public and private folders) but have not been able to send mails through the same account. The server address is the same address as we use for Outlook Web Access (OWA). We do not use POP or SMTP, nor do we have separate addresses on the Exchange/OWA account.
    2. Safari: For some reason, it is not possible for me to open OWA; Safari just "hangs" indefinitely and does not prompt for password or username. The window just remains blank. My OWA works perfectly with Windows-based machines.
    3. Address: it is not possible to contact the Exchange server from Address Book to synchronize contacts. I keep getting an error that "iSync couldn't connect to Exchange". As I have just purchsed an iPhone, it is critical to make this work, otherwise I have no contacts on the iPhone.
In all cases, my Exchange/OWA server address is *https://mail.servername.com/exchange/username* for both outgoing and incoming mails. I have checked that the password and username are correct.
Can somebody help me here? Is there a server or client side adjustment that needs to be made? Are there any special certificates that are required? Making this work is really important...
Thanks in advance for your help!

I have the exact same problem as you have detailed in your #2 comment. OWA just hangs and will not proceed to the sign in screen. Any luck getting support on this?

  • Safari cannot open the page ~ The error was: "There was a problem communicating with the web proxy server (HTTP)

Help!  I was cruzing along just fine and went out tonight only to receive the message above:
    Cannot open Page
    Safari cannot open the page
The error was: "There was a problem communicating with the web proxy server (HTTP)."
I have had all the Apple iPhone phone.  Have never encountered anything like this.
All systems are GO as soon as I log on to wifi.
    Can anyone help, please.

I am also fixed.  I also loaded Onavo, but that was the other day ... this is what I did with the help of online chat with AT&T ...
    I went to:
    Settings
    Wifi
I selected the network I was working on by hitting the blue arrow located on right side
At the detail page of that network I scolled down to the bottom to find HTTP Proxy boxes
I was on Off and changed it to Auto and it worked!
    I was soo jazzed!!
Instructions said if it was already on AUTO, to change it to Manual and make your Port = 80 but I didn't have to do that!
    YIPPIE!!  I'm a new man!!
Go to settings -----> WI-FI  -----> select the network you're using  ------> hit the blue arrow located on the right-side of the network name (ie: show details of that network), this takes you to another page.
--------> at the bottom of the page you'll see "HTTP Proxy" boxes (located below the "renew lease" button) ---------------> change the proxy to AUTO.   Note: if you're already at AUTO, change it to "Manual" and make your Port = 80.
