IPhone 3G screen response slowing down with OS updates

My iPhone is getting slower with every new update of the OS. Sliding bar, received SMS list...generally every screen presentation now takes 1 or more seconds to display. This has only slowed down after the last couple of OS updates. Not happy...it used to have an instant response. Is the new programming for the new iPhone 4 included slowing down the OS for iPhone 3G?

iOs4x definitely does slow down a 3G. The 3G just doesn't have a powerful enough processor.
One trick that seems to make a big difference is to switch off Spotleight indexing. Go to Settings, General, Spotlight Search amd deselect all items.

Is this slow down with os4 affecting anyone with an unjailbroken iphone 3g or am i the only one
    problems im currently facing
slide to answer bar not sliding resultinting in loads of missed calls
    slow text input
    apps crashing
    phone crashing
    apps very slow to start

You are not alone!! Although there are a lot of nice new features with iOS4 if I could revert back to the old OS I would. I am experiencing all of the problems you describe with the addition of the device switching itself off for no reason, then taking an age to restart.
I am guessing that the hardware in the 3G just isn't up to the job anymore, but some kind of warning from Apple about possible negative impacts on useability might have been nice.
As Steve Jobs said a few days ago "we care about every user" so lets see if they do anything to sort this out for iPhone 3G users

  • Tethering with AT&T, any slow down with increased use?

I am between buying a Iphone4 and a DroidX. The tie-breaker likely is going to be tethering. Apparently on a DroidX with Verizon, after 5 gigs, the intenet slows down to a crawl, something I can't live with. I gather there is no slow down with AT&T, you just pay more, $10 per gig. Do I have that right? Does tethering the Iphone4 work as well as a wireless card? Thanks.

It works fine...did I mention it was EXPENSIVE!

    Standard troubleshooting...
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
Remove all apps from Recently Used list...
    - From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
    - Tap and hold any icon in this list until they wiggle
    - Press the red  to delete apps from this list.
    - Press the home button twice when done.
If still a problem restore with your backup.
If still a problem restore as new, i.e. without your backup. See how it runs with nothing synced to it.
If still a problem, it's likely a hardware issue.

    Such as a computer keyboard.
With BACKSPACE, TAB WITH SETTINGS, DELETE, TYPE OF TYPE, BOLD TYPE, UNDERLINE ETC....
I HAVE A KEYBOARD COVER AND IF I NEED TO USE CERTAIN KEYS I HAVE TO SWITCH TO MY KEYBOARD CASE AND THAT IS VERY INCONVENIENT.
IT IS ALSO A TIME WASTER.
When you installed iOS 8 did you read about the new features? Applications can create custom keyboards…

You need to look for an app that has a custom keyboard with the features you require, I suggest you find one without CAPSLOCK

Again you need to look at how to manage the device - these settings can be turned off already & you can edit the 'suggestions' too.

Sadly you cannot disable autocorrect temporarily, so it's all or nothing.

  • "non-responsive script" -- appears on screen/ extreme slows down or freeze/field can appear as many as 7 times each time i click on stop "non-responsive script"/each time the field returns immediately on screen.Frustrating!I dislike freeze or slow...

I researched the net and a lot of people are having the same problem, but did not find answers.
    1. I turn on the PC and experience very slow to open firefox.
    2. Then a field pops up "Non-responsive script may be what is slowing down your computer". There is computer language written in the field. In this field are 2 small fields to click on: "continue" or "stop script". I can click on stop or continue numerous times and no reaction. Then I click on close no reaction. Then finally it goes away only to pop back up as many as 6 or 7 times. It can occasionally take as long as 20 min. to open the browser. Other times the computer is just slowed down.
    3. There appears to be no pattern as to when this "non-responsive script" field can appear. Even when I first turn on the PC and have not opened the browser yet it can appear in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
    4. Any suggestions or help you could provide would be appreciated.

thanks matthew...it is #12 in the top 12 post at the top of the board.
    12. The NEED for SPEED – Speeding up your N900
These are recommended applications to help you speed up the response, movement, and transitions to your N900.
IMO, this is how the unit should have been released from the beginning, however, there are 2 factors with this that are in play:
Nokia is more conservative on this
Lucky for us this is open-source and we have an UBER community to create these fixes for us to use!
Be sure that you have installed the EXTRAS-DEVEL and EXTRAS-TESTING catalogs.
    The applications to install are:
Black Plastic (additional theme packs are not required)
Enhanced Linux Kernel for power users
    QCPUFreq
    Transition Control
    Swappolube
Black Plastic – This is a basic theme pack that will make an immediate difference in the over-all appearance and styles of transitions to your N900.  You can adjust all these settings and transitions by going to:  settings/Plastic Theme Setup
Enhanced Linux Kernel for power users – You do not have to do anything with this directly, though if you search this forum, you may come across some basic code for loading certain frequencies that you want.  To make this simple, just use the QCPUFreq. It will give you the ability to over-clock your device up to 1.15ghz
QCPUFreq – This is an EASY way to change the over-clocking frequency to your device with a simple slide bar.  Don’t bother with the SmartReflex, just use the slider-bar.  Before you can over-clock above the 600mhz, you will have to tap the menu/enable overclocking.  There will be a pop-up about warranty stuff, this is protection for the developer.  I have multiple units OC’d since they started doing it around 3/2010, no issues on any of them….UNLESS SPEED IS AN ISSUE!  NOTE: EVERY TIME YOUR DEVICE IS RESTARTED, YOU WILL HAVE TO REDO THE OVER-CLOCKING.
Transition Control – This allows you to change how fast all the transitions are.  You can change the numbers to anything you want.  I have set all of the options to 5.  I have heard others at 10, and others at 0.  If you really don’t care much about having to see a looong sweeping effects, and would like it to just be “blip”, then 5 or 0 will do it!
Swappolube – This will allow a complete “lube-job” for your N900.  If you tap “proposed/apply/store” then it will give the best option to your devices settings, and make it so that when you reboot your device, or change the battery, you will not have to reset this again. Details can be seen in a post by CPitchford @ post: /t5/Maemo-Devices/Make-your-N900-faster-with-Swappolube/m-p/765938#M19220 )
    To install them:
    Open xterm
    sudo gainroot
    apt-get install black-plastic-theme kernel-power-flasher qcpufreq transitioncontrol swappolube
Or, if you want to install them all separately:
    apt-get install black-plastic-theme
    apt-get install kernel-power-flasher
    apt-get install qcpufreq
    apt-get install transitioncontrol
    apt-get install swappolube
TO GO TO ORIGINAL FACTORY SETTINGS AND REVERSE ALL SETTINGS CHANGES:
All you have to do is uninstall all of these.  All the factory settings will restore automatically.
    Open xterm
    apt-get remove black-plastic-theme
    apt-get remove kernel-power-flasher
    apt-get remove qcpufreq
    apt-get remove transitioncontrol
    apt-get remove swappolube
    or one long command:
    apt-get remove black-plastic-theme kernel-power-flasher qcpufreq transitioncontrol swappolube

  • IPhone 4s cover flow slow down and jerky help

    Hi all
i have copied my music over from my backup 3GS to iPhone 4s but in cover flow it is very very jerky and not as smooth at all, my 3gs is way smoother an much better than on the iphone 4s it even has problems loading the covers up as there is a delay in doing so as it seems to b slow
whats happend there not as good as my 3GS
So i tried to remove all songs and turned off the iPhone and powered the phone back up and put the music back on and its still jerky and not as smooth what the hells going on this phone should breeze through cover flow view
My 3GS is still on iOS 4 does anyon have the same problems ? Try to scroll fast and it just jerks and slows down but like I say not on the 3gs
    Any help

Hi, I have the same problem with my 4s.  After reading all the suggestion on this and simmilar forums I checked my picture files assigned to my albums.  I selected in iTunes an album, then right click to get pop up menu, selected "get info.  Then I went to artwork, copied it (right click, copy), then I copied the picture to picture editor to see the properties.  I noticed that some of my pictures assigned to albums are huge, something like 2000 x 2000 pix.
When I repliced them with smaller ones, i.e. max 600 x 600, everything become smoth.  Now my cover flow work perfectly as it should be.  Definitly ther must be something wrong with iOS5 because before I did not notice such a problem on 3GS of 4 model, even I had the big picture assigned to the album

  • Screen Sharing slows down dramatically after RDP upgrade from 2 to 3

For some reason once we upgraded from RDP 2 to RDP 3 our Screen Sharing has gotten increasingly slow. We are using it in a school environment where the teacher will share their screen with the students, and as we add more students to the share the sharing slows down to become unusable. This problem is intermittent (otherwise I would go though the logs and run a control test), and has only started upon upgrading to RDP 3. Anyone else experience this behavior? I believe we are all running 10.5.x on the OS side.

I also know someone that is having this issue; it was fine with the previous ARD version they were using in the computer lab, but after upgrading screen sharing have slowed down. It's not really that of an issue when its just one computer, but when they put all 30 computers the FPS drops down.
Keep in mind that they were not having the issues before upgrading. I've also been told that, currently, they got a 5 MB connection. I ran a network test and everything seemed fine (or more like I didn't know what was going to tell me that something was wrong, but all the numbers were very low).

  • Does a MacBook Pro slow down after OS updates much like an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad?

I have A 4th generation iPod touch that I've had for almost two years, I also have an iPhone 4s and an iPad 2. When I bought the iPod touch it ran very quick and no sluggishness now with a few iOS updates over the months it's pretty slow and sluggish.  So far both my iPhone 4s and my iPad 2 are running very good. What I've heard from friends who have iPhone's 3GS or an iPad 1 is that they're both sluggish after the iOS updates over the months and years. My question is, not owning a MacBook, does this computer slow down the same way the ios devices do after months and years of OS updates?  My experience with my netbook is that it's become much more stable then when i first bought it with no sluggishness what so ever over the months of updates through Microsoft updates. Thanks.
    Tommy Vercetti

Any computer can be slower when running a more demanding system than it was designed for.  In my general experience, though, a Mac will continue running just fine on systems two major versions after what it shipped with.  (For example, a machine that shipped with Leopard (10.5) will probably be able to run Lion (10.7) just fine, provided there's enough RAM and the hard drive isn't too full.)  The only time I've had major issues with sluggishness was with an old PowerBook that shipped with Mac OS 9 and that I updated eventually to Mac OS X 10.3...  a total of four versions later!  I probably would have been better off leaving it at 10.2, but wanted some feature in 10.3 (I forget what at this point).  And it's still in a cabinet in my office, in perfect working order.
Regarding iOS, my first-generation iPod Touch, updated to the latest system it can support, still works just fine.  Of course, it feels more sluggish when I do something with it because I've gotten used to expecting more from my iPhone 4 and iPad 2.
So, no, a Mac should not get sluggish over time, as long as you don't try to push it beyond it's capabilities.  The only Mac I have ever felt it necessary to replace before about 5-6 years of age was the one I dropped on the floor.
Edit: Also, your comparison with Windows downloading updates is not quite the same thing as what I've said above.  Upgrading a Mac from 10.6 to 10.7 is like upgrading a Windows machine from Windows Vista to Windows 7.  The free incremental updates (10.7.1, 10.7.2, etc), which are more similar to automatic Windows updates, definitely should not cause sluggishness.

  • New IMAC slowing down with spinning ball

I've had my MAC for about 3 weeks (I switched from a PC). Today it started slowing down. First whe n I tried to print something and then when I was in Excel (Office for MAC 2004). Both times it didn't do anything for a minute and then the clorful spinning ball thing appeared. About a minute later it finished what I was doing (saving a template file).
I looked at the system memory and I have 2GB of RAM with an OK status. I have two printers - one USB attached to my MAC and the other on another computer (Windows) that I am sharing. This was not a problem before, so I don't expect this to be the issue, but I figured I'd mention it anyway.
    I haven't bought virus software yet - perhaps I have a virus?
Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

Macs don't get viruses, so you can rule that out. Do you have any shared drives or network connections? Something there could be slowing things down. If you do have some connections, try disconnecting them and see if that speeds up your access. When was the last time you rebooted the machine? You could always try that.
There is a utility in applications\utilities called "Activity Monitor". You could look there to see if anything is hogging the memory or processor. Have you installed anything recently?

  • Open quicktime file to play movie and mac hangs and leaves artifacts (screen smear) on screen mac slows down

I recently completed a clean install of snow leopard and added some RAM to my MAC
when I open a QuickTime file... my MAC slows down, I get the rainbow pin wheel and screens and menus that I try to access start to "smear"... leave behind artifacts
ultimately the movies flutter and don't play properly, and I have to restart my MAC to reset my desktop
I suspect it may be related to my RAM because I've never had this issue previously although it only seems to occur when I use QuickTime
... also I installed "flip for mac"
I purchased the RAM from OWC
    thoughts?

The codec info should have been listed before the comma that precedes 640x360. Seems to be a bug in the recent versions of QT 7. If you have QT Pro you can still find the codec name by opening Movie Properties and checking the video format that way. Anyway, since Perian cant play it I suspect you are out of luck in MacOS x. Not all avi decompressors have been ported to OS X. It may be that the compressor is one of the old Indeo codecs and those definitely will not work in X. They will work in the Classic environment but a lot of you folks have given up on Classic. Just in case here is a link to the Indeo codecs for Classic: Indeo codecs for Classic
Have you tried playing it in VLC. If it is not an Indeo file VLC may play it.
The Mac version of WMP doesn't play avi or mpeg files -- mostly it plays wmv or asf files and not even the most recent versions of those formats.

  • Has anybody else noticed a 10-25% openGL slow down with 10.7.5?

Hi,  I was running x-plane 9.70 at certain settings on my 17" MBP (early 2011, 10.7.3) and noticed I was getting about 70 fps... nice.  I do an update on firmware and OS (10.7.5) and I notice that the x-plane fps has dropped to about 55. The settings and environment the same as near as I can get.  I thought this was bad but maybe just x-plane or something peculiar.  I also couldn't tell if the performance drop was caused by the firmware update or the OS update.
I remembered I'd done an xbench benchmark with 10.7.3 so I did a new one with the updates... sure enough the openGL numbers had dropped by 20% or so.  So, I hooked up my backup drive with 10.7.3 on it and ran x-plane and xbench again to try to isolate the firmware update from the OS update.... The results were x-plane still showed a drop of about 10% and xbench about 25%.  Looks like there is something wrong in 10.7.5.
Has anybody else noticed a performance slow down in openGL functions with 10.7.5?
    Khan

Thank you for this first reply! I'll have to give this a try later....the main laptop I experience this on crashed not more than an hour after I posted this issue. I'm on a tiny, slow netbook that hasn't had the same problem. Now I'm wondering if I picked up a Trojan on the main laptop and the "Not Responding" message is a side effect of a virus or Trojan.
One of the system .dll files has been corrupted and I'm not being allowed to use recovery discs, previous disc images, or any recovery options. That was an all day sucker yesterday and from what I've read on forums and have researched, it appears I'm going to need to reload the operating system. If it is indeed a Trojan/virus, I'm surprised it made it through my antivirus and firewall. Anything is possible, really.
Thanks again, I'll get back with results once I get the wounded laptop back up and running.

  • Render Queue Slows Down with Large Queue

I recently bought a 2014 Mac Pro for the specific purpose of rendering large volumes of After Effects Compositions.
I am rendering approximately 40,000 After Effects Compositions - the reason being that I am using an After Effects Script to create personalised videos from a CSV file.
I've segmented the list into batches of around 1,000 at a time and each film is 1m25s long. I am also using the Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration (OpenCL). The videos are added from After Effects into AME.
    The Problem
When I start the render, it churns them out at about 3 minutes per video. If I leave it for more than around 9 hours, the render time dramatically slows down. After leaving it for more than 24 hours (a weekend) I've seen render times of around an hour per composition.
    Question
Is there a way to stop the queue from slowing down?

I've noticed it with more than 40+ objects in the Queue as well. Now I just save the Queue and stop and exit and re-open if it looks like it's slowing down. Mind you this is a 4Ghz Hex core, 64GB Ram and Quadro 5000 + Tesla C2075 so I know it's not a system issue. CC prior to CC (2014) I never experienced this issue.
