IPhone 3G update/restore failure

I don't know if I've got a 3G or a 3GS, don't know what the difference is..
Okay, so what have I been doing?
I wanted to update my old out of date iPhone, so I started by transferring everything over, and then I made a back up.
I downloaded the update, and then started to apply it. iTunes decided to make another backup for me (lengthy process)... I don't strictly recall, but I think that after the backup finished, it went into a 'restore' mode. I checked it periodically and there was the apple logo, with a progress bar underneath. iTunes wasn't showing any activity on the phone, but the bar was going. Well, it made it to what I thought was the end, and it chilled there for a good 45minutes, and nothing happened.
Starting searching around, and what not, because at this point, iTunes was frozen, and my phone wasn't going anywhere. I've tried restarting the phone several times, and it just sits at the apple logo screen. When I plug it into the computer, the progress bar re-appears, and it starts doing something. iTunes has it recognized at this point, and I can click on it, and it says that it is now completely up to date, but my phone is doing something, and I don't know what it's doing. After a phone restart, letting it go for a while, it gets to the end, and just sits there. I'm going to let it sit for an hour or so, but some help in the meantime would be great.
I don't know how to fix or where to go from this point. Kind of at a standstill.
~Thanks,
in advance.
~~Edit
I guess patience truly is a virtue. It finally went through and completed whatever it was doing. Thanks.

You can take videos with a 3GS.

  • 4.3.3 **LOCKED* Rogers iPhone 3GS, updated + restored to 4.3.5 with Rogers SIM in, "SIM card not supported"...

    Hey guys....
I just recently encountered a strange issue which no makes sense.
I have a 16GB Black iPhone 3GS **LOCKED** to Rogers, never been unlocked, was given to me by Apple as a replacement.
It was on 4.3.3 and was getting a little slow so I decided to do an update + restore to 4.3.5.
After the restore and update, iTunes gave me the "the SIM card inserted into this phone does not appear to be supported" error... so I can't get past the emergency call screen.
I tried restoring in DFU and with diff comps PLUS diff Rogers SIM cards and no dice.
Also tried restoring with/without SIM card in during restore.
Any ideas on how this has happened and how I can fix it?
It's no longer under warranty so I know I can't go to the Genius Bar, even though technically it's their faulty phone...

I would still take it to the Genius Bar and see what they say.  Worst case scenario, since it's out of warranty, they'll offer you an out of warranty exchange, which will roughly be 200 Canadian dollars.

I guess the 9th or 10th time is a charm. I finally got it to download. First, I made sure that all other Wi-Fi devices connected to my router were closed, so that nothing else was drawing from the server. Next, I restarted my desktop and only opened itunes. It finally fully downloaded. Not sure if what I did was the reason, but it finally worked.

    Change here:

You must have a verified billing address & be located in the country whose store you are trying to use.

After I updated to iOS 7.0.2, my iTunes keeps telling me to restore my iPhone, after I restored it. Can someone tell me what I can do to fix this?

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...
    Restart / Reset   >  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
Backing up, Updating and Restoring  >  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
If you try all these steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step...
Be sure to make an appointment first...

How do i restore my iphone when it has been disabled and cannot be restored through itunes because of the error message that says "The iphone software update server could not be contacted

Have you jailbroken this device? This will make the iPhone not talk to the Software Update Server (that signs and accepts software updates) please refer to the following link? Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"
The iPhone will talk to the software update servers, just need to change the host files, it's a simple process, sorry if you were confused about the wording in to top?

If you're old phone that was repalced was a higher version of iOS, it wont be able to restore. Update your iPhone to the lastest iOS 7.0.4 and try to restore it then.

    Hi there owain11,
It looks like that particular error may be realted to a hardware issue. Take a look at the article below for more information.
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
    Check for hardware issues
    Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

  • Help please: Update/restore iPhone 4

    Hi all,
I just managed to solve the problem of iTunes store not showing up in iTunes (by removing and installing everything) only to run in to the next problem.
I have just got an iPhone 4.
I configured it (now that iTunes kindly show me the pages) and I see that there is a new update for my phone.
I download it and want to update it.
The update gets stuck in the middle. No responce from phone since yesterday.
I have tried to reset the phone, reboot PC etc. and when I now connect my iPhone, I get a pop up that the phone has to be restored. Okay, I do that, it downloads the update, prepare to install, everything looking fine... but it gets stuck in the middle of the update.
So, basically, phone not working, dead, update/restore gets stuck.
Im going on holiday on Friday and had planned everything to have my iPhone with me. I so regret that I updated the phone just now
    System:
Windows XP, latest version of iTunes, all updates for windows installed, etc.
Tried closing down virus scanners, firewalls, etc, no luck, still stuck...
So if anyone could point me to some sollution I will be very happy.
Thanks in advance for the help.

    Tried all this, no luck:
Turned off all USB devices, rebot -> restore -> frozen
Downloaded an earlier version of the update and try to do a shift/restore in iTunes. No luck.
    Note:
The restore is 682 MB large file. This file it loaded the very first time I pressed the update button in iTunes.
Nothing more I can do really. Gona have to give it back and get a new. And no iPhone on the holiday meh..
PS: No, it is not jailbroken. it is brand new.

  • I am unable to update/restore my iPhone on my MacBook after attempting to downgrade iTunes 10 to iTunes 9.2

I am unable to update/restore my iPhone on my MacBook after attempting to downgrade iTunes 10 to iTunes 9.2. I am currently running iTunes 10 on my MacBook right now because it was my only option to get iTunes back on my MacBook. Everything is fine with syncing my device but the only problem I keep encountering is the restoring and updating options. When I restore my device it tells me that It could not be restored at this time. When I update it, iTunes tells me that it cannot complete the current build. I know for a fact I am missing some files that were deleted when I attempted the downgrade. Anybody know what files I am currently missing that is causing this?

I am assuming you updated to version 5.1.1, not 5.0.1 since no legitimate version of 5.0.1 is available.
Where is this iPhone from and what means did you use to unlock it?
