Iphone 3G VPN iPsec
So I was ecstatic about the new 3.0 features for the iPhone but the thing that really caught my eye was the ability to tether. I was thinking "hey, I can finally take road trips with my buddies while still working". So i get the update and tether successfully... I then go to connect to my vpn server which is over ipsec through AT&T Dialer and it gets stuck at Authentication... So now I have no idea what to do.
Using Cisco IPSec for VPN, the 3.0 change to the iPhone requires that the firewall/VPN concentrator to be set to allow IPSec VPN over NAT-T.
In the Cisco ASDM > Config > VPN > IKE > Gloabal Parameters > Check box for Enable IPSec over NAT-T

ASA Iphone, Ipad VPN client pre-shared key (PSK) special characters bug
I ran into this in a deployment of IPSec clients with apple ipad and iphone native vpn client. Here are details:
Cisco ASA 8.2.5 OS
Ipad, running 5.0.1
Iphone i4S, running OS 5.0.1
Special characters make your pre-shared key more secure, so i used a password generator app to make one that coincidently included a " (quotation mark). After configuring this PSK on a Ipad, i was unable to connect. I saw nothing in the ASA logs, indicating the Ipad didnt even try to connect.
The Ipad generated the following error message:
VPN Connection
A configuration error occured
OK Button
After searching for quite some time, i found this somewhat obscure reference to the bug:
http://blogs.oreilly.com/iphone/2008/07/strong-passwords-can-hurt.html
Special thx to this guy!
So i started to test special characters to see what would work, adding in 1 character at a time. Here is where I stopped:
pre-shared-key !@#$%^&*()_-+=;:'<>,.
These characters worked in the PSK. If you are curious, and want to play, have fun. I assume the alphnumerics will work since those are pretty standard.
As a side note, here are a few more interesting items:
1) The " (quote mark) does work when you run the real cisco vpn client. This was successful on a Windows 7 laptop with 5.X VPN Client.
2) The ? (question mark) doesnt work as well, but that is a little easier to figure out because when you configure it on the ASA, context-sensitive help kicks in and knocks you off the config line.
3) Iphone I4S suffers from the same issue - doesnt like quotes.
4) Android is probably not affected by this bug, but I tested on an open source TUN driver- enabled adroid - not the bionic.
Hope that saves someone some time, sometime!
WThanks for the tip.
Help stamp out special characters in passwords. Their "strength" is a myth!

FeatureRequest: vpn ipsec & sshfs ?
Hi
i would love to use a TimeCapsule but as i used a lot unix, i really would prefer to be able to use something like sshfs to connect to it. any plan for this ?
else any plans for support of:
* vpn ipsec (standard, not only cisco like iphone)
* encrypted backup/disk
to ensure confidentiality of your data.
Maybe with one of this hardware-protected hard disk.
thanks
RegardsAs you know from reading the "Help & Terms of Use" for this area, this is a user-to-user discussion area and not a directly line to Apple. Furthermore speculation on future Apple products or services is not allowed.

The VPN will connect.
I can ping and connect to the ASA 5510 on it's LAN interface.
My problem is that I cannot ping or access anything on the LAN past the firewall. What am I doing wrong?
Here is my config.
Result of the command: "show config"

Cryptochecksum:88a9b69fc3d718c3badfa99db2c7ce4fYeah, I figured out where my problem was.
My IP Local Pool range was the problem.
I was using 10.10.10.0 which conflicted with a point-to-point connection where the serial interfaces were numbered and using 10.10.10.1 and 10.10.10.2.
Traffic would leave the firewall, hit the intended host, go back through my core router, then off to the other network.
I changed my ip local pool to a different range (192.168.100.0) and my problem was solved. -
Guest SSID vpn (ipsec or pptp) passthrough with WLC

Analise de tráfego - VPN IPSEC
Pessoal,
Existe algum mode de verificar com detalhes o trafego de um túnel VPN IPSEC?
Por exemplo, eu consegui ver um trafego em uma interface com os comandos:
access-list X
int f0/0
ip access-group X in
ip access-group X out
debug ip packet X detail
Mas como verificar com detalhes de IP e protocolo o trafego em realtime que está sendo encapsulado e o trafego de retorno que é desencapsulado?
Muito obrigado!

Hello there,
I currently have RV042 and I can VPN (pptp though) to it with no prob. I'm considering upgrading to one of these new routers that Cisco has recently brough out.
Before I bit the bullet, I wonder whether this new model is iphone fully ipsec compatible because as of now I just can't use ipsec but pptp.
ThanksHi there,
I currently own a rv042 and have no problems to VPN into my network. I've configured the router as a PPTP server and my iPhone connects just fine currently, but I'm looking for an alternative cause the VPN throughput in that scenario is extremely poor. Although there is no reference to max PPTP VPN throughput on the datasheet of the rv042, I had expected it to be similar to IPsec throughput which is detailed on that datasheet.
I even created a case and haven't received, to my opinion l, proper support from Cisco. Well, whatever... Don't want to continue as this would be off topic...
I started this thread because I wanted to know if this new device implemented enterprise IPSec VPN or SOHO IPSec VPN (and yes that also surprises me because I thought VPN was standard...). It makes me angry to find out that there seems to be two flavours of IPSec. This defeats the whole idea of a standard, doesn't it?
Please, can anybody with the rv220w confirm whether or not it features pptp VPN server support, and if iOS devices can stablish a PPTP VPN with it?
I'm just analysing this new device before I purchase it and find out again that I does not fulfil my expectations.
Thanks

Limited number of 5 concurrent VPN (ipsec/l2tp) connections to OSX Server
We've configured OS X 10.6 Server on XServe to accept VPN connections either via PPTP or via IPSEC/L2TP using a PreSharedKey.
When multiple clients try to connect using IPSec/L2TP, we experience problems as soon as 5 users are connected. No additional ipsec/l2tp connections can be created until one of the 5 existing connections is terminated, but then a new connection can start immediately.
Sniffing with tcpdump, the following can be seen on the server side:
09:24:45.349541 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 I ident
09:24:45.354978 IP serverIP.isakmp > clientIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 R ident
09:24:45.358233 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 I ident[E]
09:24:45.365359 IP serverIP.isakmp > clientIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 1 R ident[E]
09:24:45.367222 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 2/others I oakley-quick[E]
09:24:47.365936 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 2/others I oakley-quick[E]
09:24:50.365799 IP clientIP.isakmp > serverIP.isakmp: isakmp: phase 2/others I oakley-quick[E]
The last lines are repeated several times, until the connection attempt times out.
When using PPTP connections, we don't experience these problems, and in addition PPTP connections can even be created when 5 ipsec/l2tp connections are already established.
Does anyone know if there is some kind of limitation for the number of concurrent ipsec/l2tp connections built into OS X server? So far, we have not seen anything like this in the docs.Ok, IMAP server almost universally allow multiple connections. Thunderbird as you would have observed uses 5 if they are available. As Airmail suggested, iphones just use more and more until they exhaust the available connections. There is no set maximum option.
However there are other things that can consume connections and some may surprise you.
Anti spam tools such as mail washer
Anti virus programs in their anti spam or anti phishing roles
Web mail.
The wife sharing the same account on her laptop.
That is from the top of my head. So could any of those apply. -
I just got a new Iphone and i am trying to use the iphone cisco client to connect to my Netgear FVS318 via IPsec. No matter what i do the devices will not connect. After about 15 seconds i get an error message on my iphone that "Server could not be found." i have spent several hours searching on the internet and i can't seem to find any information or anyone who has sucessfuly connected their iphone to a Netgear VPN router. ANy ideas?
As a last resort should i decide to get a new VPN router for the office and home what brand should i look at that will easily connect with the iphone? i assume cisco routers but those are way too expensive. Any input would be great. The Cisco VPN will only connect to a Cisco router, firewall or VPN appliance. Technically standards based, but only cisco has implemented it in the "cisco way" The L2TP and PPTP are more generic configurations, but in all cases the VPN server must be explicitly configured to support your access.
It is possible to buy a Cisco router for a few hundred $ that will support the connection you need. Depends upon what you want to do. I am using a Cisco 1811 at my home, around 1500 list. If you do not have Cisco skills yourself, you will need to hire an engineer to configure it. -
Cisco ASA 5505 Site to site VPN IPSEC tunnel to an Clavister Firewall
Hi,
I have weird problem with a Site to site VPN tunnel from a Cisco ASA 5505 to an Clavister Firewall.
When I restart the Cisco ASA 5505 the tunnel is up and down,up, down, down, and I get all strange messages when I see if the tunnel is up or down with the syntax: show crypto isakmp sa
After a while like 5-10 min the vpn site to site tunnel is up and here is the strange thing happening I have all accesslists and tunnel accesslists right I can only access one remote network (Main site Clavister Firewall) trought the vpn tunnel behind the Cisco ASA 5505, and I have 5 more remote networks that I want to access but only one remote network is working trought the vpn tunnel behind the Cisco ASA. I see that when I do this syntax in ASA: show crypto ipsec sa.
They had a Clavister Firewall before on that site before and now they have a Cisco ASA 5505 and all the rules on the main site thats have the big Clavister Firewall is intact so the problems are in the Cisco ASA 5505.
Here is some logs that ASDM give me about the tunnel issue, but like I said, the tunnel is up and only one remote network is reachable in that tunnel.....

Best Regards
MichaelHi,
I'd start by getting the configuration of the remote site related to Local/Remote network configurations and go through them. Even though no changes have been made.
If they are mirror images of eachother already I'd say its probably some problem related to Cisco/Clavister setup
Seems especially wierd to me that one of the error messages includes 0.0.0.0 lines.
I have run into some problems with L2L VPN configurations when our Cisco device just doesnt want to work with the remote end device. In some cases we have confirmed that our networks defined for the L2L VPN are exactly the same and yet when checking debugs on the ASA side we can see the remote end device using totally wrong network masks for the VPN negotiaton and therefore it failed. That problem we corrected with changing the network masks a bit.
Maybe you could try to change the Encryption Domain configurations a bit and test it then.
You could also maybe take some debugs on the Phase2 and see if you get anymore hints as to what could be the problem when only one network is working for the L2L VPN.
