how do i set up my pre owned iphone 4 with my giffgaff sim card that i have been using in my iphone 3gs
My 3Gs is on its last legs.... I've just bought a second hand iphone 4 which is unlocked......I put my giffgaff sim card in the new phone and it says activation required ......then it asks me for a passcode???  PLEASE HELP!!!! I have no idea what to do xx

You need to connect the phone to iTunes and then try activating it from there and restoring it as new.
If you have further problems and especially as the iPhone you have bought is second hand, it could be that it is not unlocked.  Are you sure that it is?  If not, then you'll need to speak to the person that you purchased it from.

Sounds like the device was dropped at some point and damaged as a result.
Take it to Apple for evaluation and a replacement.

The answer is very simple: You were not the original owner of the phone. Target sold you a phone that had been returned. You can verify the date of the original sale here: Apple - Support - Check Your Service and Support Coverage. I suspect you will find that the warranty expiration date is not one year from the date that you bought it.

I will studying in the UK for the next year and want to know if an unlocked iPhone 4S with a new sim card purchased in the UK will work as opposed to getting a new phone?  There seem to be differeing opinions on this.

Iphone 4s only has one version so it should work world wide in any carrier..As long as it's and unlocked version ofcourse.

theres been discussions on 'unlocking the phone' do you think this could make it operate with my sim card?
Like you mentioned, she bought it from the Vodafone store and most likely the phone is locked to Vodafone. But, in your case since you are using the same carrier's SIM card (Vodafone), "unlocking the phone" is not an issue. Aside from that "phone unlocking" is ONLY done by the carrier and Vodafone NZ doesn't offer unlocking. (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937)
As you have already tried restoring the phone (which technically wasn't required) and SIM change, your best option is to take the phone to Vodafone store and ask them to activate it for you.

  • US iPhone 3G with Movistar/Spain SIM?

I purchased an iPhone 3G from a US Apple store. I am about to travel to Spain for 6 months and don't want to spend a lot of money roaming. Is it possible to remove the AT&T SIM and buy a Movistar (iPhone carrier in Spain) SIM/package. Will the US bought iPhone3G work in Spain with a Movistar SIM? I could not definitively find the answer on the Apple, AT&T or Movistar websites. Thanks.

If the carrier that sells an iPhone in a particular country sells the iPhone as officially unlocked, you can use the iPhone with any provider's SIM card.
The downside is with a warranty claim. If a problem develops with an iPhone that is purchased in another country, an exchange under warranty must be done in the country where the iPhone was purchased only. When returning to the U.S. with an iPhone that was purchased in another country, Apple will not exchange the iPhone in the U.S. under warranty.

  • I need help activating my iphone 4 with t-mobile sim card?

I already unlocked my iphone 4 and got my sim card activated at the store.  Why is the phone noy recognizing my sim card?  Please help!!!

Okay. I would just restore the phone as new. Follow the instructions here. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5014 See if that helps. Restore as new, then try the new SIM. You could always try going into General, Reset, Erase All Content and Settings. That should force the phone back to the activation section. If you are still having difficulties, you can check with Apple.

  • Is it possible to activate an iPhone 4S with an inactive SIM card?

I have the phone and a SIM card from my carrier, but the card hasn't been activated yet. I've read on the internet that it is possible to activate iPhones with inactive or old sim cards as long as they are from the appropriate carrier, but my card doesn't seem to work. Whenever I try to activate my iPhone, it tells me to insert a valid and unlocked SIM. I have disabled the PIN code using another phone, but it still doesn't work. Is this a hardware issue or do I simply have to wait for my service plan and SIM card to be activated?
I am worried about this because the phone worked well without a SIM card until I reset it to the factory settings. (This is a used phone.)

Could somebody please help me? It is quite important.

  • Nano sim from iPhone interchangeable with new nano sims in Moto X and new Droids?

    >> Duplicate post removed to comply with Verizon Wireless Terms of Service.  See iPhone 5 nano sim can be used in Moto X- interchangeable? <<
Message was edited by: Verizon Moderator

Thank you!! I knew they were the same size, but I just called again to a different rep who said the same thing- they are not interchangeable (she said flat out that if I put the nano sim from my iPhone 5s into the Moto X it will not work or be able to activate)... She couldn't explain exactly why except that "Apple" nano sims are singular and don't work in other devices.
I hope you are right and wouldn't mind the voicemail thing as long as I could interchange them easily :)
Thanks again! I am wondering if anyone has tried it?

The iPhone must be unlocked (Bought from Apple and not another network provider) , or officially been unlocked after the requisite qualifying period and fee payment as applicable.
All the UK suppliers are bound to unlock on request however they can add certain restrictions - Everyone Everywhere (New name of combined Orange and T-Mobile UK) require minimum of three months usage and a £20.00 fee, O2 you can do online . 3 will also do online, Vodafone not so sure of their terms.
When you do get the card cut and iPhone working its not all over however because you are going to have to do some manual settings to get full functionality as your iPhone will almost certainly assume the settings for T-Mobile/Orange the primary carrier.
This may mean that you can not send texts or access the Internet straight away.
You may need to click on Settings/General/Network/Cellular Data Network and change the following settings.

Then hold home and sleep button , slide to power off and finally press sleep button to reboot.

  • Can't activate applecare-replaced iphone 4 with previously working SIM

    Hi,
I had an iphone 4, purchased from apple online store, not locked to a carrier. It worked perfectly with a local carrier's SIM (Manx Telecom) for nearly 12 months, then developed a hardware fault and applecare replaced it no hassle. The SIM stayed with me.
The replacement iphone doesn't like the Manx Telecom SIM - it's an "unsupported card" or "unsupported carrier". Manx Telecom sell unlocked iPhone 4s from their own retail store, and the SIM was obtained from them. Applecare support think the replacement iphone is unlocked, and I've done an OS restore (it asked for a WEP key when I restored it, I think it's iOS5) but still itunes and the iphone say that the SIM is unsupported.
I've escalated this to applecare, and they tell me that the replacement iPhone *is* unlocked. I don't know how carrier locking works, and I don't suspect the SIM, although I'll get that checked later today.
I'm worried that this will drag on, and being from a small country with an insignificant number of people, this might get dropped into a black hole of "we've never had one of these before, it's not really a problem"
Any ideas? All gratefully received. Reports of positive experiences would be welcome, as woudl ideas on next steps if I don't get any joy from the current incident.
Thanks for reading right to the end!
    Pat

Applecare just fixed it. It hadn't been connected to wifi or itunes between last call and now, and they got it to accept the SIM, presumably over GSM. I am chuffed.
