IPhone 3gs backup

When syncing my iPhone it does a backup - my backup is taking over two hours!
I have recently changed phone to a 32GB 3GS so it restored from my previous 3GS but I am only using 14GB so it shouldn't be a space issue.
Any ideas anybody?

I've got a two year old 3G and had an original iPhone that my son still uses. When I sync my phone that has about 10GB used, the backup takes about 30 seconds, the entire sync process takes about 1.5 minutes. The only time it has taken significantly longer than that was when I got the 3G replaced for a warranty issue and the first backup after the setup took longer. Been fine ever since.
While disabling the backup as you describe may quicken the sync process, it just puts you in a risk situation of not having a backup to rely on if you should need it for a restore. Also, since iTunes backup has to do with changes since the last backup, the more you disable it, the longer it will take because it will have to create an entire new backup.

  • Iphone 3Gs Backup issues - "Unknown" time stamp 01/01/2001 01:00

Since updating to iTunes 9.2 for windows my phone will not back up or sync. I deleted the old backups thinking this was the problem. Now all I get after the backup running for 20 hours straight is an "Unknown" backup time stamped 01/01/2002 01:00.

If you have an iPhone 3G, then you cannot have upgraded it to iOS 6 unless you hacked the iPhone. Did you do so, or do you really have an iPhone 3GS?

  • Can't restore verizon iphone 4 from iphone 3gs backup

    Hi everyone,
I just received my Verizon iPhone 4 - I've been waiting forever for this - AT&T does not have any 3G coverage in my area.
Anyway - I tried to "restore" the new phone from the backup of my old iPhone 3gs, but itunes won't show the 3gs as an option in the list of backups. The only backup options I have are my iPad, my daughter's iPod touch, and of course, the iPhone4.
However, if I plug the 3gs in, itunes gives me the option of restoring it from all of the backups - the 3gs, the iphone4, the ipad, and the ipod touch.
Any ideas what could be causing this problem? I thought it may have something to do with the fact that I updated the 3gs to ios 4.3, but I updated the ipad as well.
    Anyone have any ideas?

There is no reason to re-enter anything by hand, set up syncing for your device and then sync it just like you do your current iPhone.  If you utilize MobileMe or an exchange account for syncing contacts/email/calendars, set it up on the device.
Good point; my email and contacts will populate once I sync with my yahoo account (no Mobile Me right now). I was using the calendar on the iphone, that syncs with my personal calendar on my macbook pro. Since that's not tied to an email account, I'm not sure how to get the calendar on the mac to sync with the new phone.
The other issue seems to be syncing the notes from the old phone to the new phone. I'm not crazy about the Notes app since it doesn't alphabetize notes, but I've used it anyway when I'm in a hurry and need to jot something quickly. So can I sync the notes from the old phone to the new phone?

  • HT1766 Restore onto iphone 3GS backup from iphone 4

My iphone 4 was stolen. I would like to restore everything from my last back up (from a few months ago) to my old iphone 3GS. How do I do this? It originaly came up with an error message about the software on the 3GS. Any help appreciated!

With iTunes updated to iTunes verison 11.0.2(26)
Connect your iPhone to the computer. iTunes should open and show a "Summary" of your iPhone. Picture/Serial Number/Phone Number etc. On the right hand side you would click on "Restore iPhone"
If iTunes doesn't automatically show the summary pane:
Mac: Click on "View" at the top left, then click Show Side bar. Single Click on the name of the iPhone under "devices" section. Follow above steps to restore iPhone.
Windows: Click on the Box at the very top left of the iTunes screen, then click "Show Menu Bar" When the Menu bar appears click on "View" then click on "Show Side Bar" follow above steps to restore iPhone.

  • Iphone 3gs backup before upgrade

    Hey guys, hope you well
I just recently turned on my iphone 3gs since 2010 & It shows me the usb and itunes screen. Most likely it needs an upgrade on the IOS software
The problem is that I have over 2000 pictures, contacts and my text messages. If I upgrade the software , this will all be deleted
Can anyone advise me if there is a way in which I can retrieve the lost data before upgrading the IOS software?
    Thank you
    Mohammad Faizal

Too late.   The iTunes with USB graphic indicates your phone is in recovery mode, and would need to be fully restored to be usable again.
Whatever was on the device is lost forever.

  • Can I get iPhone 3GS backup off of an iMac running OSX 10.5 to restore the data on a new iPhone 5?

I bought a new iPhone 5 for my wife because her old 3GS was at its end.  I made sure to back up the old phone on her old iMac running OSX 10.5.  Got the new phone home plugged it in to the computer and failure ensued... Can't sync because the iTunes is too old, can't upgrade iTunes because the computer is too old... I have a backup on the computer is there any way to move it to my newer iMac running 10.8 to get some of her data back?  I tried to think ahead by backing up but failed to think about incompatibility issues... Any help would shorten my time in the doghouse,

You can certainly move the backup files but that will do nothing for the apps or media that is on the device.  Backups do not contain apps or media.
Where iTunes backups are stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system.   Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac:  ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
For the apps and media it will be necessary to move the ENTIRE iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer.  Creating a new user account on the new computer would be a good idea if you both use iTunes and want to keep your media seperate.

  • IPhone 3GS backup gets stuck

I'm trying to backup my 3GS as part of updating to the latest version of iOS
    Windows 7
    iTunes 10.4.1.10
    iPhone iOS 4.3.4
It gets stuck at about 10% (estimated from the progress bar) for hours... when I try to cancel it I have to force iTunes to close
I have tried lots - deleting the old backup files; reinstalling iTunes; rebooting PC; hard rebooting iPhone... but nothing has worked
    Any other ideas please
    Thank you

Wish it had helped my problem..... couldn't use the winsock reset as even though already an administrator telling me to elevate status.  Right clicked - no option to run as Administrator.
To make matters worse Apple haven't been able to resolve.  They are supposed to be calling me back.  iTunes now says the phone needs to be restored, then press OK ......  nothing happens, no longer get the extracting software, installing software, (and then the restore which got stuck), just a blank area on iTunes.......
This is my third day without my business phone... not at all impressed with Apple so far.  Told yesterday I had 3 days left on my guarantee.......................
CheeseandBiscuits, any thoughts for my situation????  Am dreading connecting my iPad!

  • Recover my encrypted iPhone 3GS backup

    Hi,
After 12 months of resisting the urge to update my iPhone iOS I finally relented last night. Prior to the update I did a backup, installed the iOS update and then went to restore from backup. It was then that I found out my backups have been getting encrypted since that one time wayback when I checked that "encrypt backup" button. Well... I have no idea what the password is but really need to get the data back as it's got my daughter's birth, first swim, etc on then (not to mention a plethora of phone numbers).
Anyway, I have tried looking in keychain, old passwords, variations to old passwords and anything else that I could think of to no avail. Basically I need to crack the encryption.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My first idea was to use an applescript to populate the password field in itunes, click ok, click retry and try another. Any help with the actual code for this would be good. I can figure out the loops for generating the various passwords but have no idea how to put them into the text field and select the ok button.
    Regards,
    Chris.
PS. If you're worried I'm up to no good and am actually trying to hack someone elses phone, then I'm not trying to convince you otherwise. I thought about this and realistically, short of handing my backup over to someone else to unencrypt for me (ain't gonna happen), there is no way that I could easily prove it beyond a doubt. Anyway, if you have moral scruples about helping me then please don't tell me it can be done unless you're gonna tell me how or direct me to where I can find out how, my first post here wound up at a dead end. I just want my iPhone back to how it was yesterday.

  • Iphone 3gs backup never completes

backup never completes; v v v v slowwww; even after 10 hours overnight. now on attempting to install os 3.1.2, backup starts, after 10 hours still backing up, black bar hardly 20%, have to end the process.

I had that problem with my iphone when I got back from a recent trip where I used MotionX GPS quite a bit. I didn't think of clearing the cache on it. I ended up taking most of my 185 apps off the iPhone, only leaving a few that I had data I didn't feel like putting in from scratch. I then ran backup and it successfully backed up, Then I added 80 off those apps again. One of them was MotionX GPS and now the phone backs up and syncs in 3 minutes.

  • How do I restore an old Iphone 3gs backup if it does not appear in the "restore backup" drop-down list?

    Hi
Last night I tried to install ios 6.1.2. The install failed. I tried again and this time it recommended restoring the phone - I agreed and it worked, but after the restore was completed, I could not get out of the set-up assistant screens on the phone. It kept saying either connect to Itunes, or connected to Itunes - there was no conclusion of the set-up process.
So again I chose to restore the phone - this time I got through the process and asked it to restore my last back up. It did so, but it turns out the back-up is empty. Looking at the time of the back-up, I think what happened is the phone  synced while it was stuck in the set-up assistant, and the old backup with all my data was overwritten with a new empty back up.
If I use windows explorer I can see a back-up set from earlier in the evening that should contain all my data (6pm)  but when I look in iTunes that backup set is not available for selection in the "restore back-up" drop down list. Perhaps its only a partially completed backup, but at 1.55gb it sure contains a lot of valuable data. How can I make iTunes see or use the 6pm backup set?

yes - sadly I think that's what happened. As the phone was connected, it was syncing and backing up automatically while I tried to complete the set-up process. So an empty back-up overwrote the full one. But the full back up is still there in the application data files - it must have done a back-up automatically before it restored the phone. So why can't I see it and use it in iTunes? Very frustrating!

  • Transferring apps from Iphone 3Gs to PC so i can upgrade

I have tried everything i can find to transfer my apps from my iphone 3GS to itunes on my PC so i can upgrade the phone but nothing works..Right click on phone on left side of screen, click transfer purchases and it only transfers 1 app which was a free app....I have synced the phone/ back up a couple times in the past couple weeks but it takes 4-6 hours to complete and still only shows 1 app in my itunes library...I dont have that much on the phone..150 apps....50-60 pictures and address book...does it always take this long ? Help.....Jay

Just FYI, when I did this, I had to manually select all the Apps to reinstall after restoring the iPhone4 with my iPhone 3GS backup. Most of the data for those apps transferred over with possibly one exception - a game (Nanosaur 2) in which my save games all disappeared.
I guess what I'm curious to know is, when you restore from a backup, shouldn't the Apps automatically restore and be in their previous positions? I had to go back and manually rearrange all my Apps which took quite a bit of time.

  • How do I transfer everything from iPhone 3GS to my new iPhone 4S?

I purchased an iPhone 4S to replace my iPhone 3GS (which I will keep for spare, other chores).  What I assumed I could do (and it seems I accomplished when I had upgraded from a 3G to 3GS) was that there was a way to restore my 3GS backup to the iPhone 4S.
So, as a first step, I upgraded the 3GS to iOS5, made sure everything works OK, then did a backup of the 3GS through iTunes to my computer.
When I connected my new 4S to my computer/iTunes and registered it to iTunes, I looked for a way to restore my 3GS apps/setup to the 4S.  I could not find a way, but as I was looking I noticed that iTunes was automatically attempting to install every single app I had ever downloaded or purchased, some 400 of them.  By the time I was able to stop it (by canceling, then changing settings in iTunes so it would not try it again), 100 apps had been loaded, most of which I no longer use.
I have not had time until today to get back to this project, and meanwhile have been using my new 4S, sync'd to my MobileMe account for my Contacts, Calendars, and mobileme email account.
Just now I started searching on the Apple website, came to a box to type in my question, and it had me sign in and start this email query - so hear I am...
One more thing, I tried setting up the 3GS on iCloud (using my iTunes account ID, which is different from my mobile me ID), and after it appeared all docs and data backed up, set up my new 4S on the same iCloud account, but switching on backup did nothing.

    Almost there...
I'm replying to myself, as I have found the answer.
    1.  Started iTunes, connected iPhone 4S, turned on Airplane mode.
    2.  In iTunes, hovered mouse over my iPhone 4S name in left column, in popup box clicked on "Restore from Backup..."
    3.  From menu clicked on name of my old iPhone 3GS backup.
    4.  Backup appeared to be finished in about 8 minutes, but I new that could not be correct...iPhone had rebooted, so I entered password.  I could see that most apps were "waiting" and grayed out, also in iTunes top status box indicated that apps were being sync'd.  Also noted that my iPhone 4S now had the same name as my "old" iPhone 3GS.
    5.  After some time (a couple of hours, perhaps, not sure because I went to sleep), everything appeared sync'd on new iPhone, and iTunes stated that sync was OK.
    6.  Manually renamed my new iPhone 4S to its correct name, then backed up to computer.
I decided to hold off on iCloud for now - two majore issues:  1) have heard some reports of data dissappearing, and 2) I will have to talk to Apple about MobileMe instructions for moving to iCloud, which state that move will not transfer my mobileme email, and also that I cannot install iCloud management software (nor sync to Outlook) on my Windows XP computer - I intend to upgrade to a new Win7 in January 2010, and I have heard it is not so simple to change iTunes/device syncing to another computer.  Sounds like a good project for the Christmas-NewYear holidays...

  • How do i restore a iphone 3gs to a iphone 3g

i had to restore iphone 3g to a iphone 3gs whilst the iphone 3g was being repaired.  It now won't let me choose the iphone 3gs backup to restore to the 3g.
Is there a way around this?

Yes, of course I know it's not "supported" by Apple.  They just screwed up my phone with their touted, lost me money in the stock market with Tim's apology for maps, and in their aloofness, won't help restore my phone's previous operation.
Another site gives directions for downgrading, but the downgrade doesn't work
    http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_downgrade_back_ios_5?
A message comes up in iTunes saying "The iPhone "xxx" could not be restored.  This device isn't eligible for the requested build."
Does this mean that the build is wrong for my phone, i.e. the site gave the wrong "build" selection, or that Apple is blocking downgrades?  Maybe someone will figure this out.
Yes, I know the phone is old, but I replaced the battery and it was working just fine with long battery life before this fiasco!
I have to say this is the first time I'm really unhappy with Apple!
