IPhone 3GS battery issue - instant drain

Hi everybody,
I have an issue with my trust 3GS - it just drops dead when a certain battery level is met (or so I think as it's very hard to reproduce).
In a nutshell: when my battery hits around 20% the iPhone can shut down instantly.  When you press the power (top) button, nothing comes up on the screen, when you plug it into AC you can see the "charging" screen but it feels like it's taking longer than usual.
Anybody lived the same thing?
I'm thinking a 3.5 year old phone may be the source of the issue but it's not reproducable, it just happens.  Thinking of ordering a new battery from a place like Dealextreme and see how that goes.
Suggestions are most welcome - thanks in advance!
BTW running iOS 5.1 (latest)

take it to an apple store and ask them to replace the battery for you,at a cost of course.

  • IPhone 3Gs Battery Issues or Not? WunderRadio or IheartRadio

Does anyone use their Iphone to listen to IHeartRadio or WunderRadio? I like to use it at work to listen to different stations but it makes me wonder if my battery is ok. I have wifi turned off and 3g off so I am using EDGE and I am getting about 4.5 hours usage with 22% battery remaining. Does this seem right or should I hook up my iphone via USB while at work to save battery?
This is my second 3gs as my first definetly had battery issues.

well, as for battery consumption, EDGE is much better (12hrs advertised) compared to 3G (5hrs).
4.5hrs seems not so much, but it could be normal, internet drains the battery pretty heavily. if your phone behaves normal otherwise I wouldn't worry about it

  • IPhone 3GS Battery Issue

    Hi there.
My iPhone 3GS is cutting out after 10-15 mins when making a phone call showing the battery logo red and then re-booting when the battery is full, when it re-boots the battery is fine. The iPhone currently has ios 5.1, is it to do with that or something else?
    Many thanks, Lewis

Sounds like you could have a corrupt app that isn't properly shut down after you hit the home button...
    A couple things to try...
Hard reset - Hold sleep/wake and home down at same time until you see the white Apple symbol...then release both and allow for reboot.
Restore - in order to fix OS bugs...you need to choose the "set up as new iPhone" option when prompted... so since this starts clean, ensure that all contacts, calendar events, email account, notes, photos etc are backed up either in iTunes or in their background programs like Mail or iPhoto etc... Then once you have selected to restore and it wipes the phone, choosing the "set up as new iPhone" will get rid of the OS bug that could be causing the battery issue...
Of course try the cycle that I mention above first... along with the hard reset it may resolve and not require the full restore....

  • IPhone 3GS battery issue + sluggish

I've had this phone for probably around 18 months now, and it's in a state of permanent frustration for me.
Apart from it being as sluggish as anything - which I'm sorry I don't care what new technology these Apple guys want to orgasmically claim to be amazing, it doesn't work as intended.
But the worse thing is I could be at anything between 40% and 70% battery charge left and it will just turn itself off.  When I try and turn it on again it says there is no battery left and I need to charge.
Then after about 2 minutes on charge it shows the battery charge where it was at before it switched itself off.
Anybody hear of anything like this?

Standard troubleshooting steps in order are:
Power your iPhone off and on.
An iPhone reset, whichis done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
If no change after the last step, your iPhone has a hardware problem.
If one of these steps resolves the problem with your iPhone powering off when the battery level is between 40 and 70%, the next thing to do is re-calibrate the battery level indicator. This is done by fully charging the battery followed by using your iPhone until the battery is depleted with your iPhone powering off when the battery is depleted. Connect your iPhone to a power source and leve it connected to the power source until the battery is fully charged.

  • My iphone 3gs battery drains very fast

my iphone 3gs battery drains very fast it won't last for whole day
i just uses mail application and  facebook for some time
can u tell why the problem is or need to change battery

I'm having the same problem with my 3Gs.  In my case it is not the apps int he background or the brightness, or wifi or email push.  The folks at the apple stroe tell me that there is some software glitch that shows up every few months.
I can only get rid of it by restoring my phone as a new device.  In which case I lose all of my contacts, settings and all data.  VERY frustrating. I had recived two new phones (before applecare ran out) and have done the resotre several times.  No one can tell me what is in that creates this probelm.  I've tried differenet chargers one by one in case they are the probelm.  one int he car, one in a kitchen outlet, one at my home computer (sync) and on at my office computer (non-sync).
Problem just showed up again randomly two days ago,  no new apps or hardware.  battery drains from full to 0 in two hours.
    Apple, please fix.

  • IPhone 3GS battery usage

Since the last update to iPhone 3GS, battery usage has been extremely quick!  Has anyone else experienced this issue?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!!

  • Iphone 3GS battery expanded

My iphone 3GS battery has expanded. I just updated to IOS 5.0.1. This means the Lithium ion battery charger never terminated or the battery float voltage was exceeded. I am an electrical engineer and have designed several Li+ chargers this failure is very severe and should never happen. There are multiple redundant safety mechanisms that must fail for this to happen. This can result in fire like that associated with the Sony laptop fires a few years ago. Has anyone else had this failure?

    Hi gdgmacguy,
As I stated in my question, I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue, and if so if it also occurred after updating to IOS 5.0.1.
Since a fire in you pocket or your home has the the potential to cause personal injury and property damage I believe the fellow users should be aware of the dangers associated with this type of catastrophic failure.
This same issue with Nokia in 2007 resulted in the recall of 46 million Li+ batteries.

  • My iPhone 3GS battery loses at least 30% charge when off for at least an hour

My iPhone 3GS battery loses at least 30% charge when off for at least an hour, I took it in to an apple retail store at the end of 2010 and they told me it was fine but advised I restore and set up as a new iPhone which I did, it got better for about a month then went back to normal losing battery. I have no hardware coverage left and my specs are: iPhone 3GS 16gb  IOS 4.3.3 white. I have had it since December 2009.

I'm afraid I don't. I don't know if the phone is still within warranty. I don't know which country you are in. I don't know what third party repair companies charge where you are.
Hang on - I do know one thing: if your phone is still covered by warranty - it's free!

    Update of the firmware?
    Thanks
That is NOT what you said previously. You said: "I try to close all the app, close all tab of safari, roaming is off for the data" We are NOT psychic. Your original statement does NOT indicate that you have 3g off.
If the phone is unable to lock onto the preferred  provider you set in manual mode, it will be constantly searching for the carrier signal. This will drastically reduce battery life. If you are out of range of the carrier you want to use, put the phone in airplane mode.

  • My iPhone 3GS battery

My iPhone 3GS battery is very weak it can not stand more than 12 hours after a full charge

same here.. . do i need to replace the battery for a new one?

  • My iphone 3GS battery exploded, and made the whole phone bloated.

My iphone 3GS battery exploded, and made the whole phone bloated.  I contact my local apple support and they said it is a normal case when battery is used for more than one year.  Where else can I can some reasonable explanations and solution from apple about my phone.  My phone cannot be used, and I have lost alot of valuable data and photos.  Can I recover them?  What can I do now?

If you've been using your phone as recommended, you've been syncing your data to your computer frequently, and importing any photos taken by the iPhone to your computer (or using photostream).  If you  havent' been doing this, then you've no one to blame for any data loss and any phone, which can be damaged, dropped, stolen or otherwixe become inoperable was NEVER meant to be a storage device.
As far as your battery is concern, is is NOT normal for the battery to "explode" after a year.  Contact an authorized Apple service provider or Apple itself to see what your replacement options are.

I have a 4s runing 6.1.1 every 5minutes it promp me network lost and i have very bad battery issues lit draine so fast what should i do?

What have you figured out? Anything? What you show just shows a pretty quiet system except for firefox having a bunch of tabs open. You've got some page ins and outs so you maybe your'e hitting your HD with swap files more than what you think?
I think something like coconut battery app or something like it will tell you the charge cycles on the battery. How many do you have?
Lastly, are you using any extensions like ad blocker, or click to flash?
