IPhone 3GS built in speakers, should both be outputting audio?

I have a 3GS. When I play youtube videos or the one game I have on there, I notice that the sound only comes out of one speaker - specifically the bottom left speaker (assuming you hold the phone with the screen facing you, and the dock connector pointing straight down).
When plug in a headset, I hear both left and right.
Is there a way to get audio out of the other speaker, or should it just be doing this automatically?

Only one is a speaker, the other is a mic for the phone. As it faces you, the one on the left is the mic. You only have one speaker.

Have you tried deleting the songs from Settings?
Settings -> General -> Usage -> Manage Storage (not the iCloud link!) -> Music and then click Edit to enable you to be able to delete.

  • IPhone 4 built in speakers won't work

All media on the phone won't play sounds through the built in speakers but when I plug in the earphones I can hear it. When I connect the phone to the pc and it sync to iTunes and disconnect the sound comes back but after a while it just goes again. The Os is up to date. Could some one help me out. Thanks

If you are still having the problem, take a look at the AirPlay icon to the right of where the volume slider is supposed to be. If it gives you the Play Through Dock Connector option, then you'll need to clean the dock connector. you can do this through several methods including using a business card or clean cotton swab dipped in electrical cleaner or alcohol, or pugging and unplugging the actual dock connector and juggling slightly (careful) and blowing or using canned air to try to clean out any debris.
The problem is tha that the iPhone thinks that it is still connected to the dock. A similar problem can happen witht he headphone socket.

  • IPhone 3GS built-in microphone not working?

i just got me a iPhone 3GS 16gb a few hours ago and while on the first call everything was fine, the built-in mic now doesn't seem to work anymore!
i tried voice control, taking video, recording audio...the mic isn't working in any of the apps!
but it works just as normal when i attatch the headset!
    anyone else experiencing this?
    any tips?

i've already doen the reset a few times, also tried shutting down completely a few times as well as synching with itunes!
will try a full restore now...
strange thing is that the mic worked on the initial call and the first video - so i really hope this is just some software issue...i really don't want to send in my brand new 3GS after just a few hours :/
edit: while i'm restoring my 3GS it just came to my mind that it maybe has to do with me upgrading from an 3G and restoring from that backup on the initial setup? itunes started to download 3.0 again now, event though i was already on 3.0 on my 3G...

Simple and EASY way to sync contacts from 3gs iPhone to MacBook Pro. Partner and I both use macBook. I have tried and get a message that only 350 of 3,500 item have syncd- all photos. I'm still learning and am very afraid of doing something that will wipe out all info, contacts and photos. Entering this site, the account shows my partners name, but accepts my other information.

First of all, you should always save you photos on computer like any other digital camera.
Backup on iCloud or iTunes only backup your Camera Roll. The other photos should be already on the computer.
Note: Photos are not saved in iTunes, it's only a conduit between your iPhone and your photo managing software on computer.
    What computer do you have?

  • I can't transfer songs purchased on my iphone 3gs through itunes to my windows 7 pc. I've done it in the past, but now I can't. What should I do?

I have a iPhone 3gs and I purchased 30 songs and an audio book on my iphone through itunes.  I manage my own songs on my PC's itunes.  I tried to drag and drop my legally purchased songs and audiobook onto the itunes library on my PC.  It will not allow me to do this.  When I purchase songs on my PC through itunes, I can drag and drop songs to the iphone, but it won't allow me to do it from phone to pc.  I checked a number of sites trying to find an answer.  Many of them recommend updating the itunes version.  I started to do this, but at the beginning of the update it said I might lose files on my iphone since they weren't transferred to my PC library.  I stopped the upgrade, because past upgrades have wiped out all songs, ringtones, books and apps from my phone.  (The phone and PC are all authorized.) Could someone please tell me a simple straightforward way to copy the phone files onto my pc via itunes?

When conntecting to a public Wi-Fi conenction, here's what you do. I'll use the public Wi-Fi for Starbucks as an example. Turn on the Wi-Fi adapter on your Mac and choose "attwifi". When it connects, open your Web browser. You'll then be re-directed to a screen where you need to accept the terms and agreements when using the connection. Once you agree to the terms and agreements, you'll be granted access and you can surf the Internet.

  • IPhone 3GS upgrade v3.1.3 to v4.0.1: What's Apple Doing to Resolve?

I upgraded to 4.0.1 this weekend on my iPhone 3GS and my wife's iPhone 3GS. We are now both suffering from only 5 hours of battery life.
Prior to the upgrade we enjoyed over 16 hours of battery life. The only difference is the upgraded operating system. This proves the problem is the upgrade to 4.0.1, maybe not v4.0.1 itself, but definitely the upgrade from v3.1.3 on a 3GS.
We use(d) these machines in our business and because the working business day is greater than 5 hours, this upgrade to 4.0.1 is costing us real money. If Apple wants to be considered more than an up-market toy maker, it will need to show more commitment in support of real world businesses.
Can Apple continue to refuse to accept there is a problem? I've tried ignoring the problem, like Apple, but it didn't make my battery last longer. So I guess ignoring the problem is not the correct answer? Maybe I need to hold the machine differently with v4?
I call for Apple to immediately make an optional downgrade to v3.1.3 available, or issue a fix to the v4.0.1 upgrade process/software. If any empowered employee of Apple reads this, please action immediately.
Otherwise, what is Apple doing to resolve this issue, other than ignoring it?

    Hi
When you say nothing in the csauth log... do you mean nothing at all... or nothing that looks like an error?
Try setting logging to max and seeing where it gets to.
I suspect there is something in your 3.3 config that doesnt get upgraded corectly. Its impossible for every scenario to be tested - Im not sure how much upgrade testing actually gets done. Probably left until the end of the test cycle.

  • List Videos in Alphabetical Order on iPhone 3GS?

I am having trouble with my recently synced videos to my iPhone 3GS - I have synced across a bunch of audio and video files and when I browse the songs they are all listed in alphabetical order yet the videos appear to be in a random order. I have copied across 5 seasons of a show and the seasons aren't grouped together nor in alphabetical order. Is there anyway to group the seasons together or list them in alphabetical order?

This seems to be a common problem after the upgrade to iOS 8 upgrade., for example: Re: Problems with events in Photo app on upgrading to iOS8
There is nothing that can be done about it. Sorting of synced events  is not supported in the Photos.app.
To speed up a bug fix send feedback to the Developers using this form: Apple - iPhoto - Feedback
iTunes Photo sync will be discontinued soon. The iCloud Photo Library will replace it early next year in Photos for MacOS X. Already, with iCloud Photo Library Beta enabled, you can no longer sync your iPhoto library to your iOS devices using iTunes at all.

The selected device has no outpt controls.
When I adjust volume the sound level meter shows level on high but cancelled out (circle w/ slash).
I notice RED LIGHT from inside sound port. Sound works when headphone are plugged in but not external speakers.

  • IPhone 3GS Charging/Battery Problem: Hardware, Software, or Both?

    Hello everyone,
I'm a long time Apple user, but this is the first time I've ever posted on the Apple Support forums. I hope you will please excuse the length of my post, as I believe that relaying the approximate sequence of events here is important in determining the cause (or causes) of the problem I am currently facing.
I've trawled the entire internet and I cannot find any reports of a problem that is actually identical to my own. There are many, many similar problems, but none of the exact nature or complexity that I am experiencing. I sincerely hope that someone who really knows their stuff will take the time to read through my story and offer some guidance, as this is my first iPhone and I want to be able to keep it!
I purchased the iPhone 3GS second-hand on eBay approx 3 weeks ago, to replace my old Nokia (which had finally given up the ghost), and although I initially got the 'charging is not supported with this accessory'  error - I remedied this problem by using a whole range of different chargers and USB cables which I had accumulated over the years, and so initially, I always managed to get the battery charged one way or the other.
For the record - the iPhone was in very good condition, but had been factory-reset by the seller, and so I upgraded to the latest compatible software (IOS 6.1.3) when I received it.
Anyhow, these charging methods included three different USB cables (OEM Apple ones), two different 3rd party (non-OEM) wall-chargers of differring design, and three different OEM Apple USB Power adaptors. You know - the Wall Socket with the USB slot in it.
There seeemed to be no discernibe pattern as to which charging device or combination of cables and sockets was the 'correct' or 'best' one to use, as the results were random. One charger would work one day, whilst another would work the next, and vice versa. I continued to swap chargers, plugs, and cables in order to get the thing charging. Despite any errors or problems, I would always manage to get it charged somehow, at least for the first week or two.
The only pattern I did discern was that the oldest of my USB cables, from a 2005 iPod Mini, did appear to be somewhat more reliable than the other, more modern cables - though at the same time, the newer cables did work (and charge the phone) on various occasions.
As things progressed though; the 'charging is not supported with this accessory'  error appeared on a more regular basis, though I was often able to get around it by changing plugs and/or leaving the device overnight. As many of you will undoubtedly know; this error message was said to be a 'software bug' - one which would typically appear once the battery's charge level was under 20%, and not before. Common advice on Mac forums was to never allow your battery level to drop below 20%, which would prevent the problem from occuring.
However in my case, this error message was now showing up more regularly, often when the phone had more than 20% charge left, leaving me unable to charge the phone quickly and successfully when needed.
And as many of you will also know, the 'official word' across all the different Mac forums is that even when this charging error message is showing, and the phone's battery indicator appears empty or declining, the battery will continue to charge, albeit at a much, much slower rate. This appeared to be true, as I was able to leave it overnight, with the error message displaying, and return to find that the battery had charged - though only to a marginal degree and never to full capacity. At this point, I was still able to use the phone, although on a somewhat limited basis, as the battery was always running out of juice too quickly.
However the situation worsened, whereby the phone started to reject all of the chargers and cables; either failing to recognize them at all, or giving me the aforementioned error message. Its battery would die,  and I would have to leave it plugged in overnight (approx 8-10 hours) to get any response out of it at all. If I left it long enough, it seemed that I would at least get some charge out of it, though the maximum charge level was rapidly decreasing despite the amount of time it had been charging for, making the phone become less and less usable by the day.
Still, things continued to worsen - the 'charging is not supported with this accessory'  error now appeared regardless of how much charge the battery had left in it, or what type of cables or plugs I was using - leaving me with no choice but to let the battery run down, and watch as the phone switched itself off..
Things have now reached the point where the phone is essentially unusable.
Strangely enough though; when completely dead or switched off, it will recognize the Apple USB to Wall Socket Charger, and will indicate that it IS charging - with the thin red line representing low battery levels, and a 'lightning bolt' logo underneath to signify the transfer of electrcity to the battery. Suffice to say, under these circumstances, the phone will charge, albeit very, very slowly, and only to a certain level (5-10%)
However - as soon as the phone is switched on again (either manually, or automatically - once it has reached a certain charge level) - the 'charging is not supported with this accessory' error appears immediately, and the phone immediately starts to lose power again, switching itself off again within a matter of minutes.
And so the cycle starts again - the phone is dead, it will accept the charger and indicate that it is charging (very slowly) until it comes back on again, at which point it rejects the charger (via the error message), runs out of power, and dies again. For every 4-5 minutes of use I get out of this phone before it dies again - I am having to charge it for hours and hours at a time; during which time the battery indicator never increases or gets beyond the red and into the green.
To confirm: when switched off - it appears to recognise the charger and will charge very, very slowly, but once switched on again - it rejects the charger and dies almost immediately due to lack of accumulated charge, regardless of charging time. The reason I explained the entire sequence of events here is that this did not just happen overnight, but rather progressively, with lots of random occurances and apparent technical contradictions along the way.
Another factor to consider is that I recently tried to charge it using the Apple USB Power Adaptors of two friends (both whilst the device was completely dead), to test whether my chargers and cables were somehow all at fault. The charger/adaptor for a new iPhone 4S did not work - but the charger for an older iPod Touch worked flawlessly, and gave me an immediate and efficient charge which lasted longer than any other, despite the limited amount of time I was able to leave it charging.
Having said that, due to the random behavior of this phone, I am uncertain whether this was simply a random occurance, or something technical relating to the charging equipment I was testing at the time.
It should also be noted that throughout this entire process - the phone will always register with iTunes when plugged into my laptop and switched on. I have had absolutely no trouble with the transferring or music or apps, or the updating of software since I got the device. Even today, where I managed to get a few minutes of 'on-time' out of the phone - it immediately registered with iTunes, despite simultaneously giving me the charging is not supported with this accessory' error, before promptly running out of power and dying again.
It will occasionally charge when connected to iTunes, but only at random and for extremely short periods of time.
If it's of any consequence, I am using a 2nd/3rd generation Macbook Pro from 2007, with a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB of RAM, running OS X 10.5.8 (Snow Leopard). Snow Leopard has only recently been installed, and when installing it  - I did opt for a partial 'Time Machine' restore from a backup drive, which included key files and applications - but which did not restore my complete profile from the previous 'Leopard' OS.
Suffice to say - I am pulling my hair out here. You simply can't get by in today's world without a mobile phone, and I had only just bought this phone as a replacement for my old one. I had really come to depend on it, and would hate to think that I'd have to say goodbye to it because it required some kind of replacement part or repair that cost more than the phone itself (£65)
The only real, discernible pattern with these problems is that they continue to get worse. I've tried booking an appointment at my local 'Genius Bar' but their booking system has been down for a while, presumably due to high demand, and I also know that their policy is to try and sell you a replacement product or accessory before recommending or exploring any alternative solutions. Their policy is that they will not see you without an appointment anyway.
I have a feeling that although this may be hardware related on some level, with a potentially delicate or damaged charging port on the device itself - I've also read in many places that this is a software bug - which some of my experiences and observations would appear to confirm - especially as the phone can withstand lengthy and intensive procedures like the iTunes restore process (both in and out of recovery mode) without running out of power and dying. It seems to be getting fed enough power during these procedures, but not in any other situation - and will randomly charge in some circumstances, while not in others.
    Thus far, I have tried:
    - The 'Battery Doctor' App - which recognizes when the phone is charging, but doesn't alter the fact that it never seems to charge beyond about 5-10%, and has done nothing to change the fact that whilst apparently 'charging', the phone is still losing power and proceeds to die.
    - A
    - Cleaning the cables, adaptors and charging port with a toothbrush and some compressed air.
And still - the phone will appear to be charging when switched off (though it never seems to get beyond about 10%) and will stop charging as soon as it's switched on, leaving me with about 5 minutes of usage before I have to go through the whole process again.
Any advice whatsoever would be greatly appreciated - and again, my apologies for such a lengthy post!!
    Thanking you in advance,
    Adam

I have had your exact problem with my old 3GS, now I cannot even get it to turn on, I still see that it is supposed to be charging though, but it never charges any so it seems.
I replaced the Lower Dock Connector Assembly back when it still charged while hooked to my PC, and it found it made no real difference.

At this point I am not sure if I should replace the battery and hope for the best, or just junk the phone, I cannot really sell it if I cannot reset it...

  • I had a iphone 3gs on contract then upgraded to 4s then i allowed the sync between the 2 phones then deleted contacts off both phones tried a backup from iclud and now the phones are exactly the same and my main 4s wont work

i had a iphone 3gs on contract which ended so i upgraded to 4s. had the 3gs cleaned as a second phone for my partner. i then allowed the sync between the 2 so whatever was on mine would be on the other and vise versa. this meant the contacts was aswell so i deleted them not knowing they would be removed from both, i then tried a backup to icloud to restore the lost canotacts instead it seemed to clone my new 4s from my old 3gs and now the features on the 4s wont work. music and tunes have been lost along with all my messages
    please help me

Plug your phone into the wall charger for at least 30 minutes...make sure you have a sim card in the phone...then:
Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, iTunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.
Make sure you have no anti-virus software running or any firewalls...turn all of that stuff off.

both my mac and ipad is working on wifi (so did the previous phone) i ve tried rebooting, tried reset supplier...nothing works. can someone help please?
    thanks

Yes, they should be able to verify that WiFi is working properly. If I just got a new phone & it didn't work perfectly, right out of the box, before I started restoring or whatever, I'd be right back where I got the phone.

When you connect your iPad or iPod to the Mac, click on the device name in iTunes - don't click on the arrow on the device. Then click on the Music tab in the main window pane. Now you should see 'Sync Music' and all your playlists, artists and albums. Here you mark the checkboxes for what should be synced.

  • No sound from built in speakers on iPhone 4

I had this problem once before and am not sure how I fixed it.  When I unplugged my earphones I no longer get sound via the built iin speakers.

Unfortunately I didn't. I took the time to make an appointment with the Genius Bar and was told (by an unusually smug tech) to go home, back up my data, then restart the phone with the power button and center button down.  If that didn't work to then Resotre as new through iTunes.  I had already done all that so it seems I will eventually have to get a new phone. I asked said agent before I jump and pay for a new (4S) phone if there was the iPhone 5 set tp debit.  He answered unequivacally that there wasn't.  Several days later there was a news story hinting that there was.  With all that said I will live with my phone that sometimes rings and sometimes doesn't for as long as I can and wait to see what story is correct.
If you haven't tried any of the above you should (it worked once for me several months ago).  Good luck.
