IPhone 3GS cases?

Looked around the apple store and couldn't find any cases specifically sold for the upcoming 3GS iPhone 32gb which I have already pre-ordered. I saw that the size is supposed to be the exact same, but before I buy a case for it I just want to make sure that an iPhone 3G case will fit the new iPhone 3GS 32gb. Any answers much appreciated. Thanks.

The phones will be the same size. Apple said so at the WWDC. 3G and 3GS are the same size. The 32Gb will be the same size. Memory density increases but size of memory chips generally has stayed the same.
No idea why you would buy a case now, but the new phones are physically identical to the old ones. Even those of us not upgrading can pimp ours out and lie that we have new ones.... who would know?

My iphone 3gs randomly started to turn itself on and off today and it won't stop like it is continuously doing this. I haven't dropped it or anything it just randomly started doing it. I put it in rice just in case it got water on it. Help! ? My phone won't even be a year old until next month and I was really wanting it to last me for 2 years. :/ What should I do?

Took my phone to the Apple store this week and they told me it was a hardware/screen malfunction. They replaced the screen for free since it was under warranty. Now it works fine again!

  • IPhone 3gs - Best Case to prevent signal loss

    Hello...
I have been suffering from signal loss on my iPhone 3gs for ages.
Can anyone advise me on the best case to buy to prevent this?
    Thanks

I've been having the same problem with my service as well. At least 3x a day i go to check my phone and I get the screen that I can only make 911 calls so i have to switch it off and then back on (which is not really a big deal, it's just a nuisance b/c people who have been trying to reach me can't get through). I've called AT&T and they say there's nothing wrong with the signal blah, blah, blah and I've changed my SIM card but I still have a problem. Apple has changed my phone but I still have this problem. I don't know if it's my specific area or not b/c others in my area don't seem to have this problem either. I was beginning to wonder if it was the case also until I found your post. Very strange.

  • Will iPhone 3Gs fit into iPhone 3G cases?  Any difference in size/Controls?

Will the iPhone 3Gs fit into iPhone 3G cases? Any difference in size/Controls?

I purchased an incase slider before my 32 GB 3GS arrived. When I put the phone in it today, it was so incredibly tight that I almost couldn't get the phone back out of it. I called the incase company and they said that despite Apple's claims that the phones are identical it is possible that the 32 GB phone is slightly thicker and is causing problems with certain slider cases. Incase is nice enough to send me a replacement (even though I bought from apple store online) when they have verified that their cases fit the new phones. My previous iPhone was a 2G so I could not tell if the new case would have fit the 3G. I guess, try before you buy.

  • Video out from iPhone 3GS to TV.

Can I use the standard (3 phono plugs on the end) video out lead I already have to view keynote presentations from my iPhone 3GS on my TV/Projector?

    Same problem here.
I can't get any video out of my faithful iPhone 3GS running iOS 6.xx.
I have been browsing Apple discussions for solutions and most of them seem to point out to a faulty Video Composite cable. This is not my case.
I can rule that out 100%.
Old iPhone 3G running ios 3.1.2 works just fine as well as does iPhone 4, with the same cable.
I have tried with a friend's TV and cable and iPhone 3GS and we have identical issues.
(different cables and phones, same issue).
Please note all testing has been done with genuine Apple Video composite cables.
So this points out clearly to a iphone iOS issue combined with hardware.
It appears that starting from iOS > 5.0 video output has been disabled on earlier iPhone models prior to 4.
It would be nice if Apple could issue a Knowledge Base document on the issue as that would save many people further testing and waste of time.
This document http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4108? isn't really complete enough as it stops at iphone 4.
Has anybody the ultimate answer on this issue?
    Are there any known work-arounds?
    Thanks and regards
    Pieter

  • 3.0.1 Update crashes iPhone 3GS

Yesterday, I connected my iPhone 3GS to a Windows PC running XP Pro. ITunes loaded and displayed the phone, then offered the 3.0.1 update. I decided to accept. First, iTunes warned that it needed to be updated to support this OS version for the iPhone. But the update failed because BonJour.msi file was missing from this PC. After hours of research, I found an article, followed the instructions, installed and ran "Windows Install Clean Up" which allowed me to get rid of the missing link to Bonjour.msi. I was then able to complete the updates to Bonjour, iTunes, Quicktime, etc. I rebooted the PC and opened iTunes. I connected my iPhone 3G S using the cable supplied with the phone. iTunes again offered the update, but did not recognize the phone. I chose to set it up as a new phone on that PC. I then accepted the update. I saw the usual screens. Then it stalled on the Verifying... pop-up window on the screen on the PC. The phone showed the large up arrow, itunes, and the apple symbol. They just sat there for over 10 hours. Clicking on any other part of iTunes did not work. I finally used Window Task Manager to end iTunes to recover control of my PC. The iPhone was stuck on the same screen. I rebooted the PC, unplugged the iPhone, did a hard shut down on the iPhone, and powered it back on. Still on the same screen. Connected it back to the USB port. Still locked up. Unable to get the iPhone to be recognized by iTunes. Later, when I returned to a location where my MacBook Pro was located, I plugged in the iPhone to that. It did not know the iPhone, so this time, I selected a restore from my older iPhone 3G backup. That got the iPhone working again. But when I then reconnected it to the PC to try to restore my lost programs and data --- you know the drill. iTunes would not let me choose the backup I presume was done before the 3.0.1 update attempt. I stopped there and came here to ask for help in restoring this iPhone to the backup which I hope was done before the 3.0.1 update, cause that would be were all my data and programs would be. How do I get iTunes to allow me to restore from that backup, even though the 3GS iPhone now has a different name (same as my older 3G)?

try to re install itunes. it should keep all your songs videos and apps and just restore the program. Just in case that doesn't restore i would suggest you back up your computer first

  • FIXED (for me at least): iPhone 3gs will not sync with Gateway NV79

I’ve spent months trying to fix this miserable problem with getting my iPhone 3gs to sync with my new Gateway NV79. Gateway will not help. Their technical support is genuinely worthless. Microsoft blames Apple and Apple blames Gateway.
My old iPod Nano syncs to my Gateway NV79 without a problem. I’ve tried all of the proposed fixes but other posters with no success.
But I do believe I’ve discovered a real fix (for me at least). Here’s my setup:
    • Gateway NV79 running Windows 7 64 bit edition
    • iTunes 10
    • iPhone 3gs running OS 4.02
The USB ports needs tweaking to get the iPhone 3gs to sync to the Gateway NV79. Follow these steps without your iPhone 3gs connected to the Gateway NV79:
Step 1: Go to Control Panel
    1. Open Control Panel
    2. Click Hardware & Sound
    3. Click Power Options
    4. Make sure Balanced is selected and click Change Plan Settings
    5. Click Change advanced power settings
    6. Expand USB Settings
    7. Expand USB selective suspend setting
    8. Change On Battery setting to Disabled.
    9. Change Plugged in setting to Disabled
    10. Click OK
Step 2: Go to Windows Explorer
    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. Right-Click Computer (not your computer name)
    3. Click Properties
    4. Click Device Manager
    5. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers
    6. Right-click first Generic USB Hub
    7. Click Properties
    8. Click Power Management
    9. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
    10. Click OK
    11. Right-click second Generic USB Hub
    12. Click Properties
    13. Click Power Management
    14. Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
    15. Click OK
    16. Restart your computer
After your computer restarts, login and connect your iPhone.
You must complete both steps. Step 1 is required for Step 2 to stick.
There are a few things that may happen. iTunes may start syncing immediately and fail with an error. Don’t worry. If the sync fails the first time, restart the computer with the iPhone still connected. Now, iTunes will either take you to setup screen to connect your iPhone or the sync may restart. In my case, the setup screen came up and I DID NOT CHOOSE TO RESTORE. Pick the first option to add your iPhone. The sync will restart and may or may not finish. Don’t worry, if the sync fails, restart your computer again with the iPhone still connected and this time the sync will work.
Here’s the problem: the iPhone 3gs will not sync with the power management enabled for the USB ports on the Gateway NV79.
    Good luck.

If you cannot update your computer, you will not be able to sync your phone. The requirements are:
    Mac system requirements
Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.1 or later (free download from www.itunes.com/download)
    iTunes Store account
    Internet access

  • Iphone 3GS keeps crashing and wont hang up after out & incoming calls after repairs

I have had my iphone 3GS back to vodafone after I could not make calls, kept saying call failed!. I did all the troubleshooting tips, was okay for a short time, then shortly started doing same thing.I took it back to the store and on that occasion the assistant took the phone out of the protective cover i always had it in  to replace the simcard in case it was this that was causing the problem ,then he dropped it onto the shops wooden floor and it bounced, he picked it up & went bright red & kept apologising , I then said if I have any more problems with it then I will come back & see him & he said yes. Shortly after I noticed the sim cover on top of phone was missing but i could see the simcard inside, so I returned to the store & informed them of this, i was advised by the earlier assistant 'Craig' that he thought that the sim tray was underneath the simcard which he then removed the simcard, then advised me he didn't want to go poking about in it in case it was inside and he would send the phone to be repaired & gave me a replacement phone until mine was back. I waited approx 2 weeks before receiving a call from Vodafone saying they would repair it if I payed over £100! as it was not covered under my insurance,  I informed them the assistant dropped the phone in store and then i noticed the problem & was then told they would investigate this and call back, 10 minutes later they called back to say it would be a free repair. Since the repair I have had nothing but trouble with the phone crashing when I access apps , sticking on the hangup screen with in & out going calls for approx 10 minutes or more, when I turn phone on the Apple logo stays on the screen for long periods off time. When I access my music the track will change part way through to another track & also sometimes refusing to charge. I am fed up with going back & forth to the store which is quite a distance from my home & the phone has more problems since it was ''dropped'' & then ''repaired'' & I am at a loss of what to do. I feel I have been treated unfairly and gone along with all Vodafone asked of me. Please could someone from Apple help me!!!

The steps you already took were the correct ones - reset, restore from backup, restore as new phone. You could always try them again, but a Restore with set up as new is the 'ulitmate' troubleshooter - if that doesn't correct the issue, it's usually time for a replacement phone. Unfortunately, you've learned a hard lesson there, although I don't see how Apple screwed you - it's no secret that the iPhone warranty is valid only in the country of original purchase (as a little research on your part would have shown).
See how much money you saved with your eBay purchase? Next time buy the phone from Apple or an authorized UK carrier.

  • My iphone 3gs is not activating after updating my software with i tunes...what shall i do? cant i go back to my normal version which was ios 4.1

my iphone 3gs which is not associated with this accunt is not activating after updating the sof tware, it connects to i tunes but i tunes says "we arh your unable to continue with your activation at this time, please try again later or contact customer care". my iphone aslo just says it cannot be activated or something like that every time i try. i have been waiting for 4 hours now but it still hasnt worked. how can i uninstal this update and go back to my old version which ws ios 4.1 or or ios 4,3. i dont even know what version it updated to, im assuming it is ios5 but not sure. it says try connecting to i tunes as well but it is connected and i tunes cant activate it either. my phone is connect to a wifi but it stll says no service.
i will really appreciate some help.
    thanks.

Generally this is a sign that the iPhone had previously been
hacked/modified/jailbroken and the update relocked it to the
original wireless carrier. If this is the case, only that wireless
carrier can unlock your iPhone. You must contact them to see
if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.
Where did you acquire this iPhone?
What wireless carrier did you use before this problem?
Does the app Cydia appear on your iPhone?
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>About=>Carrier?

  • I updated my IPhone 3GS to the new 5.1 operating system and have since had a range of problems with not only my phone but also my IPad.

I updated my IPhone 3GS to the new 5.1 operating system and have since had a range of problems with not only my phone but also my IPad.
Programs (Safari, mail, messages) keep crashing, mail will not delete properly (some will keep popping into my inbox again for no reason!!!), slow, settings lock up etc. etc.
This only seemed to become an issue once I updated to ios 5.1 and funnily also affected my Ipad even though i hadn't updated the software yet. I have since updated the software on my ipad thinking it might help too but that only made things worse!! So I am not sure if it's an ICloud issue, but when i try to disable ICloud my devices lock up as well.
The battery life is also shocking!!
I have hard reset both devices, restored both devices, reset the setting and tried a whole host of other suggestions (like closing background programs) on this forum buit nothing works and i am tearing my hair out.
I looked in the phone and ipad log and there do seem to be low memory reports though i don't know why these are occuring now when they never have before??
I don't know if I can restore the old operating system (If I can please let me know how). The phone or ipad are not jailbroken.

but you should have a backup in itunes.
Every time you sync your iOS device iTunes creates a backup. go check if its there, iTunes Preferences >Devices. and there you should see if you have a backup, and in case from which date the backup is.
And ofcourse you can get your icloud data back by just logging in with your Appleid under icloud in settings on the iphone.
But anyway, if the iPhone works when you restor it as new: try adding your backup, and see if the issue comes back. And experiment with your backup and try to work out what is causing the issue, my guess is that its some app!   Good Luck!

  • IPhone 3Gs Connection Problems IOS 5.1.1

I have an iPhone 3Gs on IOS 5.1.1 and when it loses connection to my carrier, also wifi is not connected.  It worked before on ios 5.0.  Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks!

I came across this post as my iPhone 3Gs had gone into recovery mode on its own accord.   I had hundreds of photos unsaved and was gutted when I saw this post, I felt even worse as it was not the information (gdgmacguy) I wanted to read.
Unfortunately, the above post is simply wrong! A system cannot destroy information in a blink of an eye.   If it were that easy, the forensic teams across the world would have a hard time.  A criminal could simply force a phone into recovery to remove all the data.  Please!
I managed not only to take the phone out of recovery mode but also, salvaged all the data held on it.
To be fair, I am a little annoyed at Apple for not offering a salvage option on the device for such a situation.  And it may be that they will not like me sharing this information, in which case I believe this view to be morally wrong because photos are so important.  We all make mistakes, in terms of forgetting to backup from time to time.
What I used was the Redsn0w software, running as an administrator in XP compatibility mode.  In the ‘Extras’ section it as a Recovery Fix option.  It simply runs some software that takes the device out of recovery mode.  I had to run it twice for some reason but the second time (out of desperation) worked a treat.  The phone is now exactly as it was before it went into recovery mode.  More to the point, it allowed me to backup all the photos and videos that I had failed to do before hand.  And let’s face it, photos and videos are usually the most valuable stuff we keep on our phones.
I hope this help anyone in the same situation. I really hope someone from apple reads it and is able to convince the bosses that a recovery option is very important.  And to take note that YES it is possible to recover data on a phone stuck in recovery mode.  And more than likely it would be easier for apple, compared to other non-apple professionals.
    Good luck.

  • Is there an app to control the volume of an iPhone 3GS?

I have an iPhone 3GS and the volume keeps going all the way down once I plug the headphones in. Before this started happening the volume would go all the way up. Before that even started happening the phone would repeatedly try to shut itself off and I had to keep pressing Cancel.
I did buy the phone off of eBay used, to try and go on a prepaid contract once my current contract ends. On the case itself, there are some minor scuffs and such, it does look like it was opened at a time. It still works perfectly, except for the volume glitch right now. Is there an app that controls the volume to keep it from going all the way down?. People say in forums and such to tighten the screws on the bottom (which I tried), and to also open the phone and see if there is anything blocking the volume control thing (like dust or anything) but I'm afraid to try that with the risk of causing further damage. What should I try?.

to at least try and fix it if none of that works then replace it through apple

  • Strange problem with how my iPhone (4S) sees a friend who recently moved his number from his old network and device to a new network and iPhone 3GS

This is a weird one, so bear with me.
My friend recently got an iPhone 3GS with a new SIM in it (3 network in the UK). I helped him set up the iPhone and got iMessage working between my mobile and his temporary number (07429...)
In my Contacts I had two separate phone numbers for him: 07903... (his old number, on an old Sony Ericsson mobile with T-Mobile UK) and 07429... (the number that came with the 12-month contract I purchased for him; we called this his "temporary" number).
His old number (07903...) was transfered over to his iPhone with no problems. His iPhone has worked flawlessly.
But since that day I've had some really strange behaviour on my iPhone (a 4S, also on 3 UK): I removed his temporary number (07429...) from my contacts. But now when I try to text him at the old number (07903...) it bounces back at me as if the number doesn't exist. But if I try to text him at the temporary number (07429...) it works just fine and in my contacts and within Messages it appears as an iMessage-connect number.
So I tried deleting everything and starting from scratch. Still the same behaviour.
No one else is having this problem with him. I can call his old number (07903) just fine, I just can't text it.
I'm guessing that there's something with the way Contacts works with iMessage that's caused the problem. It's as if my contacts have updated properly under-the-hood (iMessage *does* work just not with the right number).
And yes, when I (or anyone) tries calling the temporary number (07429...) it's out of service. Which is correct. So it's not simply a case of *both* numbers being active.
    So this is very peculiar.
In typing up this message it occured to me that I ought to try creating an all-new contact with some slight change in the name fields (e.g. include the middle initial) and see if I can get it to work properly. Then I ought to be able to change the name field (or just leave it alone, touch wood!).
Thanks in advance for reading this far. It's difficult to explain this problem succintly!
    Cheers,
    Carey

    I've fixed my own problem.
In the end, the issue was with iMessage on the other phone, not mine.
While I had it connected to iTunes (the other phone, not mine), I could see that iTunes thought it was the temporary number (07429...). I turned iMessage off and back on again and the phone number in iTunes changed to the old (i.e correct) number (07903...).
Subsequently, texts from my phone to the other phone showed up as blue-bubbled iMessages.
    Hope this helps someone!
Thanks for reading, if you did.
