Iphone 3GS Factory Unlocked with Orange in France Not working.
So the story is as follows.
I was working in France for the last few months on a ship. The engineer i was working with recived an iPhone from Orange as a bonus on his plan. He did not want the phone so he gave it to me. We talked to orange and had it unlocked. I did not use it as a phone while working as i had no real need for it. Nor did i want it to go for an accidental swim.
I have now returned home to Australia. With what I thought was a factory unlocked Iphone 3Gs. I restored the iphone firmware to Iphone OS 3.1.3 placed my optus Sim Card in to the iphone and connected it to my computer.
I am greeted with the following message:
"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier's store to receive a replacement SIM card."
I called the apple support line and i was told that without the orginal sim card there was nothing i could do.
I can not get the SIM card of the engineer as he is in france. I can still use the shipping agent to get in contact with orange.
If anyone knows of a solution to this problem it would be much apppreciated as right now i have shiny paperweight.
How can i get the phone to work with my optus SIM card?
It sounds like it was never unlocked by Orange in the first place and without his SIM you can do nothing.
Optus cannot do anything for you as only the original carrier can unlock it and that requires the original SIM card.
Its a brick until you return to France with the SIM card and then probably pay to get it unlocked - I can't recall if they do official unlocking there but its pretty likely.

I would be greatful of any advice for my problem. I have bought an iPhone 3GS from my friend who had it locked to O2. She has had it since new and never jailbroken it.
I have just got it factory unlocked and also have not jalibroken the phone. When I restored the phone I got the congratulatory message on iTunes, and it shows the correct phone number for the SIM I want to use and the carrier listed in Settings>General>About is now correct too.
I am now receiving no signal whatsoever. I have tried restoring network settings, restoring the whole phone again, toggling airplane mode, removing the sim and reinserting when off/ on etc and nothing is changing. Whenever I put my SIM my old phone, it's picking up signal absolutely fine.
If anyone has any other advice, I would be very grateful.

If the Unlock was NOT done through O2... then that would be the cause of your issue. -

Iphone 3GS bought factory unlocked in Malaysia. The phone was stolen and jailbroken. I tried to restore after a battery change.iTunes updated system but now it cannot be restored. Pls let me know if Apple can help?
I thought this was an exceptional case. It was originally factory unlocked. Being stolen it underwent the changes and came back to the original owner. Police records are available to confirm.

IPhone 4 factory unlocked 5.1.1 MMS not sending blank bubble, why?
I can receive mms but when I try to send a pic the picture won't send. The difference with this issue is that when I choose the picture from iMessage and the picture is inserted into the text field, the picture does not show and it's just a white blank picture bubble and the picture won't show until I press send but the picture always fails to send. everything was normal, I had the tmobile mms setting and this randomly happened one day that I decided to send a picture to someone. I've rebooted the device but I don't want to go through the process of restoring the phone.
If you're using TMobile in the U.S., MMS may not work exactly as it's supposed to. TMobile isn't a supported carrier.

I have an unlimited plan for T-mobile and i order the iphone 4s factory unlock like a week ago. But i'm not sure if the 4s will work with the t-mobile 4g network and Siri. well i'm not really asking which is better for travel, i'm just asking over all which phone is better for the plan i have with T-Mobile, but i'm assuming is the Galaxy s2, but the only reason y im not getting that phone is cause that phone is way too big. sigh and i really like the i4s, been using iphone before as well, so i'm kinda use to it. But i see no point of getting the I4s if i the function that came with it to make it fun doesn't work. You get what i mean?? that's y i'm asking cause i don't know anything.

I updated my iphone 4s factory unlocked to ios 6.. everything works fine on 5.1.1 however after install ios 6 my iphone doenst allow me use my movistar sim card... Message :

Firmware: 3.0.04Sorry, that message means your phone is not officially unlocked, but rather was hacked to unlock it. That's what happens to hacked iPhones when updating or restoring software: they are relocked to the carrier they were originally locked to. That's what has happened to you.
Only the carrier an iPhone is locked to can authorize the phone's official unlocking. You will have to determine what carrier this is & contact them. There is no other solution & Apple cannot help you. -

It sounds like you are most likely going to need a hardware repair. If the phone is still in-warranty, you should be able to do this pretty easily by contacting AppleCare at 1-800-My-iPhone (1-800-694-4766) or taking your phone to an Apple Retail Store.
The surest way to find out if an issue is software related is to restore the phone as a new device via itunes, then when prompted to choose between restoring from a backup and setting up as a new device, go ahead and disconnect the phone and test it before choosing one of those two options. If the issue still occurs at this point, its not software related and the phone will need to be repaired. However, if it did resolve the issue, you can plug the phone back into your computer and you will be prompted with the same options again, and may continue to restore from your available backup.

Hey guys. My IPhone 3GS is unlocked and i went to update the software and it said that an unknown error has occurred and said it needed to be restored to connect with Itunes. When i got to restore it, it gets about 3/4 of the way done, says an unknown error has occured(1015). I have no clue what to do and all and any help would be amazing.

A legitimately unlocked iPhone should work with any compatible 3G GSM carrier. The iPhone, however, is considered 'restricted technology, and cannot be legally taken to Iran.

Download the current version of itunes, attach your device to your computer, open itunes, go to the device (upper right hand corner) and select update. It'll update to iOS 6.0.2, the current version of iOS.

However on using the same in India with Vodafone, i am facing a problem where the connectivity keeps switching to EDGE most of the time. I have a 3G plan but most of the time it switches automatically to EDGE. Thats when i have to either switch Airplane mode - On/Off and then it acts normal.
