IPhone 3GS falling apart

The case of my iPhone is starting to come away from the main phone, so I can actually see where the sim card goes in.
This means that the button at the top to turn the phone off doesn't work or very rarely.
At the bottom a bit of plastic has come off where the charger is inserted
The vibrate doesn't work, I have to put it on silent otherwise I have to put up with it saying it's going from vibrate to silent all the time which means it's basiclaly vibrating all the time. This happens without even touching it.
I love the iPhone but can't afford to get a new one. If I take it to an apple store will they replace it? I've had it nearly a year now and don't want to give it up just yet.
I also don't trust myself to take it apart and put a new casing on it myself.

If it's less than a year old and you did not drop or otherwise damage it, they should replace it under warranty. Otherwise, it will cost US$149 for an out of warranty replacement.

  • I think my iPhone is falling apart.

I've only had my iPhone for about 6 months, but for the last month I've noticed it feels very flimsy like the case is loose. The volume button feels very loose and so does the sim card part. Also, the part where the silver front part meets the black back part (excuse my poor description heh) has come apart so the whole left side has this crack along it, similar to this photo that I found on another forum:
    http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/9803/p1125040709.jpg
Am I able to get this fixed or replaced? If so, do I take it directly to an Apple store or do I take it to the mobile carrier's store (it's on a contract)?

If you are in the U.S. then Apple, not AT&T, handles service and warranty issues.

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your phone. Only if you back up manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • When i put my own contacts into my iphone 3gs and deleted existing ones, the same happened on my mums iphone 4? my iphone was hers previously, but has been unlocked by o2, we have different networks and were 12 miles apart when i did it!

My mum upgraded last week from iphone 3gs to iphone 4, I got the iphone 3gs unlocked as of this morning and proceeded to remove her contacts and put my own in.
Several hours later she came home from work to find her contacts on the iphone 4 had been replaced with the same list i had put on mine!
We have different networks, different itunes accounts etc, I can't understand why or how this has happened or most importantly how to fix it as she has lost all her numbers and is understandably very very cross....

contacts are not visible in back up, but if she restores from that back up - contacts will come back to phone. Then all her apps and music have to be synced back again. She will also have all other personal info return to the phone, but all that info will be as old, as back up itself.

  • Apple Care Plus Accidental Damage for iPhone 3GS

I purchased Apple Care Plus (set to expire in April 2013) when I got my AT&T iPhone 3GS. The phone has started falling apart over the past year and last May the home button, ringer, and volume switches completely went on the phone and I have been using assistive touch ever since. I dropped my phone accidentally about a week ago cracking the screen beyond use. I figured I'd check my Apple Care account since my mother also dropped hers (she had AT&T's monthly protection plan and is getting her 3GS replaced with an iPhone 4S tomorrow) and it is being replaced with a newer model. I wasn't able to find any posts here or on the interwebs about whether or not your phone (after the $49 fee) is replaced with the same model or a newer model. I'm a few weeks away from an upgrade elegibility and since I'm in college, $49 compared to $199 does make a big difference. I've made an appointment with the genius bar for Tuesday, but would love to get some feedback before making the trip in there.
tl,dr: Will Apple replace my iPhone 3GS with another 3GS or can I get a newer model?
    Thanks!

Correct. Make an appointment at http://concierge.apple.com/reservation/us/en/techsupport/. You'll leave with a new phone at the end of your appointment. There is a $49 deductible for an AppleCare Plus replacement when you've had accidental damage (such as the cracked screen you mention).

  • Can you get your data off of a broken iPhone 3gs?

I dropped my iPhone 3gs and it broke apart. Took it to someone to fix it and it broke even worse. I was going to sell it to a company that would repair it and sell it. Before I do that I want to get all of my data off it...is there a way I can do this or am I just screwed?

No, but unless the company you're selling it to has forensic methods of extracting the data, it's unlikely they can get at it either.  When they're done fixing it, there will be new parts and the phone will be wiped of data.
If there is really sensitive data on the phone, and you're worried - best to take a sledge hammer to it, and call it a loss...

  • Reception / Battery problems with iPhone 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1

There are major reception and battery problems with iPhone 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1.
I can not believe that Apple did not test this for major bugs like this one is.
I am a business user and can not effort to have bad reception. Apple wants to gain in the business clients... I never had this with my former BlackBerrys!
I need a reliable phone not a play thing like this is right now, it just needs it to work propely. And if a major bug like this comes along, fix it immediately. After the iPhone4 story, now this...incredible! Going back to my reliable BlackBerry! It just ain't reliable and takes forever to fix a problem.

I have the same issue after iOS 4.2.1 update. I am using iPhone 3GS officially unlocked by Apple. I tried using different SIM cards and both carriers show same problem when using phone in 3G mode. Phone falls back to EDGE mode showing 'E' from '3G' at start. I have reset the phone and rebooted several times and moved to different cell areas in the city just to verify the problem.
I had no such issues earlier. I also have Nokia E71 which shows full signal and has no such issues.
I have posted the bug on apple iphone feedback page. I hope they Apple will fix the problem and test the release properly on all models before releasing to public.

  • Reception problems with iPhone 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1

AFter upgrading to 4.2.1, my 3GS iPhone is experiencing bad signal, bad quality and frequent disconnections.
This was repeated even after my provider replaced my device to a different 3GS device, running 4.2.1.
inserting my SIM card to a NOKIA phone, showed strong signal and good reception.
Did anyone experience reception problems on 3GS running 4.2.1??
    Thanks,

  • IPhone 3GS won't restore (error 1600 or "not eligible for this build") no apple logo, recognised in DFU mode.

My iPhone 3GS decided to turn itself off (on 30% battery) yesterday and hasn't turned on since. After some testing (hard resets, DFU mode), tiny umbrella recognises it in DFU mode, as does Redsn0w. neither devices can successfully kick the phone out of the restore loop.
The screen stays blank throughout, no apple logo, connect to itunes logo etc. however every now and then the charging sign will appear (empty battery with a little bit filled (red)). even if i unplug it from my iMac the charging symbol stays there.
once I get the phone in DFU mode iTunes recognises that there is a phone connected that needs to be restored, it doesn't matter if I click restore or option + restore the process will fail on Error 1600 or "this device is not eligible for this build".
My iPhone is not unlocked or jailbroken. Before the incident with the coffee I managed to synchronize and update its firmware as indicated by iTunes. The latest update for my iPhone was iOS 5 firmware.  My intent is not to unlock or jailbrake the device, just to make it work again.
Here are some things I've tried since:
    1. Exiting recovery mode via Tinyumbrella
    2. Entering DFU mode via Redsn0w
    3. Shift + Restore and using firmwares from 5.0 to 5.0.1 to upgrade my iPhone.
    4. Remove hosts to my Host file (in relation to the "device not eligible for this build" issue)
    5. Try redsn0w and use IPSW to see if it is recognized by iTunes (iTunes recognizes the iPhone but then at the very last minute shows error 1600.
    6. Save SHSH files and use Tinyumbrella to uploaded them to my iPhone.
I would really appreciate if someone can help me on this. I might be doing something wrong or maybe not even considering the right steps to solve this issue. I don't know if there are missing drivers that are preventing the device from communicating with iTunes properly. Of some tool that can be used to correct this problem. It may or may not be fixable but I think it is worth the try.
    Thanks very much.

please ignore the comment about coffee. Someone posted a very similar question apart from he spilt coffee on his phone, I didn't.

  • My iphone 3gs will not charge after battery replacement

    Hey
I've had an iPhone 3gs for almost two years now. Recently I shattered the screen and cracked the back. Last summer I broke my led screen and paid 250 to get a new phone from apple. To avoid this cost my dad decided to order parts online and fix it himself. He is one of those do it yourself dads. After watching tutorials and taking my phone apart he replaced the parts and put it back together (Parts included a new screen, a back, and a battery). Once we finished we plugged the phone in and what happened was that it would be stuck at the charging screen with a think red line. Every once in a while it attempts to turn on, the apple icon appearing but once it finished that it flashes my homepage and turns off. It constantly repeats this.
I've gone through a TON of pages but have had no success in finding a solution. We've tried rebooting my phone (it doesn't work), restarting my computer, multiple plug-ins, basically everything. When plugged in to a computer, iTunes is unable to detect my phone. Any other suggestions?
Any advice would be MUCH apprectiated. Thank you

Nevermind guys, figured out it was a fault in the battery. We took my old battery out of my old phone put it in, sure enough it worked:)

  • Q: i have recently aquired an iPhone 3GS and need iTunes do activate it.But iTunes wont download onto my computer

Q: i have recently aquired an iPhone 3GS and need iTunes do activate it.But iTunes wont download onto my computer. I am running Windows Vista Service Pack 2. Please HELP!!

I'd first try experimenting with a different browser. If you've been using IE for the download, try Firefox instead (or vice versa).
If no luck there, there's some other suggestions in the following document. (You're not getting the error message, but your problem here falls into the same general class of download trouble.)
iTunes: Windows reports that "iTunesSetup.exe is not a valid Win32 application"

  • HT4623 Do i need to update this new update to my IPhone 3GS?

Do i need this new update to my IPHONE 3GS? as not enough space - iv deleted all the stuff i no longer need but still short.

Well, you don't absolutely have to have it ... but ...
First of all, here's what you would be missing (I assume you're talking about upgrading from iOS 5.1.1 to iOS 6):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5457
Secondly, as additional upgrades become available, you'll fall farther and farther behind.
Thirdly, as apps are updated, you may lose out on the ability to run them, and you will lose out on added features.
So, it's not mandatory that you upgrade, but I strongly suggest striving to do so.
