Iphone 3GS freezes when using 3G or wireless then won't turn back on unless on charge - help!

My iphone freezes and its doing it on a daily basis now multiple times and I don't know why.
I've restored it, reset the network settings but neither has worked. It tends to freeze on the move when on 3G but it does also freeze when I'm connected to either my own or another wireless network.
When it freezes the screen goes almost blank but you can still see what was last on the screen faintly with lines all over it. More often than not it will not come back on unless I can plug it in to charge (even when the battery is at 100%) which out and about I can't always do.
I try holding down the home button and the top button, just the top button and the apple logo will come on but then that will freeze as well and the phone doesn't actually come back on.
At first I thought it was the battery as it does it more when the battery is below 50% and then the low battery symbol will suddenly appear when I try to put it back on but today for example it was on 89% and I was on my own wireless trying to upload a photo to Facebook and it froze.
I also thought it was down to Facebook photos when it first started happening but it will freeze on any app that uses 3G and if it does it when I'm on my emails when the phone does eventually come back on and I to delete and re-enter my email accounts otherwise that app just shuts down straight away.
The other thing I tried after researching is turning off location services but it still froze even without this feature turned on.
It's very frustrating so I'm desperate to sort it as I can't afford a new phone, this was a gift from a friend who had upgraded his iphone so I've had his old one. It didn't do this straight away and I can't think that it's done it from any particular moment. I've deleted some questionable apps, just in case, but that's made no difference.
Any ideas? I've found a place locally who can replace the battery for about £30 which I'm lead to believe is quite cheap as I know I couldn't do it myself but could a battery be causing what I'm assuming are network/software issues?
Any help much appreciated - it scares me that my phone will sometimes not come on when I'm out and about as I could desperately need it one day when it does it.

Could be faulty battery. Make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple Store for quick free battery diagnostic testing.

my iphone 5 keeps randomly shutting off and won't turn back on unless I plug it in to the charger

I'm experiencing the same issue. It's one thing to have to re-power up but to not be able to do so without plugging in the charger when the battery is substantially full, is a real drag.

  • Iphone 4 turns off randomly and won't turn back on unless it's plugged in

Iphone 4 turns off randomly and won't turn back on unless it's plugged in.
    Has anyone had this problem?
If I leave the phone (thus not doing anything to it) for an extended period of time say 2 hrs. It will have turned off and you can't turn it back on unless you plug it in, but it's got heaps of "Battery" left.
Ever so often it will turn off randomly as well, and can't turn it on again.

If your iPhone is powering off, this is not normal.
Try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup. If no change after doing so, your iPhone has a hardware problem. The iPhone includes a one year warranty.

  • Turned off iphone 5 to preserve its battery and now it won't turn back on

    Hello!
I've got my iPhone 5 16gb around 1 year now and today, i needed to preserve its battery life (97% remaining )so i turned it off. A few minutes in i needed to make a phone call but it won't turn back on. I've tried the recommended tips such as:
holding both home and lock screen button
    DFU mode
    Charging it
Nothing seems to work, i do not know whether the lock screen is broken or not or just whether its a battery or ios problem. Funny thing is that a few days before this incident, there was an 7.1.2 update so yeah idk. Please help. It will be a pain to buy another iPhone

    Hey there iDopey,
It sounds like you are currently unable to turn on your iPhone on or it is on, but the screen is black. First determine if the unit is on but has a black screen with this:
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
If this is the case follow the last step in this post. If not, then move on to this section:
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
If that still does not resolve the issue:
    Issue not resolved
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

  • I can't power off my iphone without resetting it. it won't turn back on unless i plug it into charge.

I cannot turn off my phone unless I reset it (press top sleep button and navigate button). It will not turn back on unless I put it on the charger.

I have an iphone 3 and the same problem. Some of the 2008 posts on a similar title suggest a restore. I need to save all of my 700+ photos somewhere before I attempt that process.

  • Syncing to iPhone 3GS - Freezes when Photos are synced, after 1st sync

    Using iTunes 9.1.1.12 and iPhone 3GS 3.1.3.
When syncing, the sync freezes when Photos are included to be synced. It just hangs at the end of the sync process, and never completes.
If I don't include the Photos to be synced, it syncs fine.
If I then choose to re-sync the Photos and delete the folder: "iPod Photo Cache"... It re-syncs fine again (and places all photos on iPhone). But if I immediately sync again, without un-checking Photos to be synced, it hangs again at the end.
    Please help.

  • Iphone 3gs freezes when synching

Since updating to iTunes 10.6 and ios 5.1 today my iphone 3GS keeps freezing at the last step when I'm synching it with my Mac. It's saying 'Waiting for items to copy' but it stays like that for ages each time I've tried to synch it. The only thing I can do is unplug the USB but the iphone still keeps trying to synch so I have to shut it down completely and then turn it back on.

Have now tried this but still getting the same problem when I try to synch.
It's currently saying 'Synching photos to "my iphone" (Step 6 of 6)' and then underneath "Waiting for items to copy" with the wavy bar below that but with no indication of progress along that bar if that makes sense.
On a couple of the previous attempts to synch I left it like this for an hour to see if it was just working through something but it just stayed like this!

  • When I close my Mac Book when its on a- The display won't turn back on whe-

When I close my Mac Book while it is on and leave it on while closed for long periods of time and then I open it, the display will not turn back on- why?

Does it turn on when you do something like hit a key or click the mouse? Or do you need to restart? If the former, forget about it, except try clearing the pram/nvram. (commandoption+pr on startup till it bongs a few times). If the latter and if the step above didn't work, you've got a problem that might be solved by doing an archive & install.

  • IPhone 3GS freezes when updating iOS

Every time I attempt to update to the latest iOS my phone freezes up and I cannot get it to shut down or access the menu.  The Apple icon and status bar are displayed, but the status bar is empty and never progresses.  When I plug the phone in, iTunes says it is downloading the files, then tells me to save purchased items to my Library.  After that, I get error messages.  Any suggestions, other than throwing it in the parking lot and running over it with my car?

A bit more info: when the phone freezes, it has the iTunes logo plus a cable end plus arrow. The computer no longer sees the iphone. Pressing the sleep and home button together does not solve the problem, however long one holds them. The only solution is to go to an Apple store where they reset to factory settings.

  • HT1430 My iphone died suddenly with a full battery and it won't turn back on.

My iPhone 4 died suddenly with a full battery.  I have tried, multiple times, holding the home button and the sleep/wake button at the same time for over 3 minutes.  I have even tried doing that with it plugged in, even though it had a full battery when it stopped working.  Any suggestions on what to try next?

Go through the restoring steps described here:
iPhone, iPad or iPod touch: Not responding or does not turn on
If that doesn't work, try recovery mode as described a little further down in the same article.

  • MacBook Pro keeps shutting off when locked or shut. It does not turn back on unless I disconnect then reconnect the battery connector.

I don't want to have to take apart my laptop every time I need to use it. Is there a permanent solution to fixing this problem? Trying to avoid a trip to the Apple store.

If you have a Time Machine back up you can try Restoring it,  then run your software update before opening and see if it will download the Mavericks compatible version.
I am not to hopeful here.  There is no stand alone Safari download for Mavericks.
You would have to reinstall the OS. It should not touch your user files when you install on top of your existing OS.
Always prudent to have a backup.
