IPhone 3GS frozen/rebooting after iOS 5 update.

Hello all,
I updated my iPhone 3GS to iOS 5 last night.  All seemed well until I noticed the restore was complete.  The iPhone was frozen on the Home Screen.  The flash of white the runs beneath the slide to unlock is frozen at different intervals everytime the phone reboots itself.  I have tried restoring the phone multiple time.  I am unable to perform a hard reset because the phone's sleep button is nonfunctional.  When the phone decides to reboot itself, about every two minutes, I notice that for a split second it flashes to a gray screen with an iPhone in darker gray.  There are words all over the screen but I am unable to read any of it before te phone resets.  I think I see a "Peparing to Install" title on the screen, but that is a guess.  Any ideas from anyone?  I'm really at a loss of what to do.

An update on my problem above.  I too restored my software but all it got me was losing all of my ZombieLife progress, LOL.
It seems to me that my phone freezes/reboots when it is trying to grab a signal for an update.  It has happened to me several times on the initial visit to a website on Safari and also on Nike GPS.  I can still see the page I was on in the background a bit but there is no recovering the phone.  I have to then hold down the lock button to restart it and sometimes that will not work unless it is on a charger.
Today my battery went from around 70% to the phone saying it needed to be charged in the span of a few minutes.  When I did get it on the charger in my car it went back to 66% after rebooting.
I don't know if it means much but I have AppToolKit Lite and in the System Monitor it shows you memory usage.  At the moment out of 254.23MB I have 120M Active and the only I am running is the app.  Wired is at 40M, Inactive is at 32.20M and Free is at 63.90.  This is after I double-clicked the home key and killed all other apps.  When there are apps active the Free memory is next to nothing.  Not sure if this is a cause but I hope there is a solution soon with 5.01!

  • Iphone 4 is rebooting after ios 7.1.1 update

    Hi,
My Iphone 4 is rebooting and shutting down frequently after ios 7.1.1 update, daily not able to receive calls as it is in shutdown mode and trying to reboot also taking more time, Can some one suggest me the best solution for this problem???

    Hi Sekhar_Nutakki,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend these steps if your iPhone is shutting down or restarting unexpectedly:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIs and corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
    Best Regards,
    Jeremy

  • Iphone 3GS keeps restarting after ios 4.3.2 update! Help please.`

So I recently updated my uncles iPhone 3GS from a very old version 3 something to the latest. It randomly restarts within about 5 minutes of using the phone. You could be in a call and it would just shut down. Any help on resolving this issue please?

Sorry unit was upgraded to iOS 4.3.3. Unit is now out of warranty by 23 days. I would like to think out of courtesy that Apple would replace my iPhone for the inconvenience caused by the upgrade as the phone was working perfect prior to the upgrade.
    Please help Apple!!!

  • IPhone 3GS keeps rebooting into iOS 6 screen

My iPhone 3GS (Which is updated to the latest version, and not jailbroken) keeps randomly crashing and then rebooting to a screen that says iOS 6 on the slide to unlock screen, and then when I slide to unlock it shows a connect to iTunes screen. iTunes says it's in recovery mode, but I've recovered it a million times and it still keeps happening. TinyUmbrella says it's not in recovery mode and I can use it to get into recovery mode and then out of it and it works like normal for like 20 minutes and then it crashes again. Does anyone have a fix or a similiar problem?

Here they are, sorry for bad quality, I can only take pictures with my webcam since my phone broke.
When I connect it to iTunes it tells me it's in recovery mode (Which I'm pretty sure it's not, since recovery mode has a black background and TinyUmbrella says it's not)

  • Iphone 4s not working after ios update 6.1.3

I have an iphone 4s boxed, brandnew and unopened for a year not until March 2013, for a couple of days i have used it, worked excellent but after i have unlocked it through at&t and updated it to IOS 6.1.3 it went to re-activation mode again. Tried several times to activate it but no succeess. I went to an apple store to discuss the problem of the update and consequently the result it brought to my iphone4s but denied a replacement because it was passed the warranty period. I was offered a replacement (for a fee) of $200 but i refused since i believe i havent enjoyed the iphone for years, has not even dropped, water-damaged nor scratched. The manager on duty (Mary, Fairview Mall, Ontario) insisted that my iphone 4s has a growing software problem already and i just dont know of... I reiterated to her that the unit was working as brandnew just like many of my apple products i have.  I havent called the apple support telephone support though. What should i do now? Please help guys. I cannot take it paying another $200 for an iphone that was practically brandnew and went useless after the update. I have a record of the at&t authorized unlocking request.  Should i escalate the appeal to where? Please help.. Thanks a lot guys.

The fact that you chose to leave the device in the box for a year (a rather unintelligent decision) has no bearing on the warranty.  Warranty starts from the date of the original purchase.
You can try basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide which is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).

  • Music on my iPhone 3gs wont play after I updated to 5.0 software today

I did the update it offered in itunes when i connected my iphone 3gs today, all went well.   Now I see my music but I cant hear it, its not highlighted so that when I click a song it can play.   Anyone have any idea whats up?

Check this and see if you have your music there.  Or check wherever you have you rmusic stored.
I've never heard of an iOS device update that deleted the music in iTunes.

  • IPhone 3GS unresponsive/bricked after iOS5 Update

First let me start off by saying that I feel Apple is a SUPERIOR company and 99% of the time have excellent things to say about their products. I will, and in this case have once again, continue to buy their products over any other company. That being said....
I updated my iPhone 3GS on 12 Oct 11. When the process was almost completed I received the message that iTunes was unable to continue with activation at this time. I have called customer support numerous times (Case ID: 252118395) and have gone to the Apple store where I live. No one can seem to figure out what happened with the update or my iPhone. I tried reinstalling the OS over 50 times now and receive the same message. I went three days without a phone before I was forced to buy the 4S model. I am a career soldier waiting to deploy and going that long without a phone was unacceptable. All my 3GS has on the screen now is the gray screen saying "iPhone" and different languages scroll across. The last 4 times I have contacted Apple reference this I sit on hold for about 20 minutes and then it just goes to a ringing sound with no answer. This is absolutely unacceptable and I know Apple is a better company than to just keep giving me answers of, "I don't know what's wrong; keep trying; Give it more time." The Apple store manager at the Colorado Springs store told me it was because iOS5 wasn't compatible with the 3GS model; though your website clearly says it is as I told her. I was also told by an "Apple Genius" at the same store my "best friend" in my case was to "Google" it to see about unlocking the phone and reinstalling iOS 4 but she, "Couldn't really tell me that." Of a side note the complete lack of professionalism and "hey bro" attitude at this store was in stark contrast to the professional atmosphere and service excellence that the late Mr. Jobs fostered. All I want is for my old iPhone 3GS to be restored so at least we can use it for an iPod Touch. I have exhausted all attempts to contact Apple. A prompt response would be greatly appreciated as I know you are a much better run company than this and you give no real e-mail link to help out with such matters. Has anyone else had this issue???

    HI All,
My iPhone 3Gs is not detecting any carriers.  I have just upgraded to ios 5.
I have tried my SIM in another phone and it is working OK.  The phone was unlokced by O2 and I have tried an O2 SIM in it which also does not work.
When I manually search for carriers then none are found.
I'm beginning to think this is a hardware fault.
    Any ideas?

  • IPhone 3GS cannot reboot after reset of data

Hi, I have an iPhone 3GS that is not able to reboot or restart. It just gets stuck in the apple screen forever. I recently tried to reset the data in the phone. This is the result....

Follow the below steps and you are all set no worries:
1- shutdown your iphone with the hard reset "home button and power for 10 second"
2- connect the usb cable to the pc but NOT to the iphone"
    3- open itunes
4- while the iphone is off, press the home button for 5-10 seconds then plus the other end of the white connection cable into the iphone
5- do not remove your finger from the home button
6- itunes will detect it and you can now restore it
I got this info from a good teacher it worked fine for me. Hope it helps you too.

    Hey Guys ,

i did 5 times the complete reinstall now it stay on at least untill i connect it to itunes
then it start rebooting again and again
i never had problems till today
big apple fan NEEDS help !!
    anyone ???
    Tom

    Hi Azwrona,
Another user with this issue indicated that they were able to fix it by first accessing the Store within the Music app rather than via the iTunes app. Once they accessed it that way, they were able to get to the Store via the iTunes app....
Thought that would be worth a shot before doing resets and sing offs. If that does not work, post back and we will do the resets and sign offs....
    Cheers,

  • IPhone 3Gs: Error (-1) after attemped update to iOS 5

After attempting to update to iOS 5 on my 3Gs, my iphone becomes bricked and enters recovery mode. The update proceeded as normal without issue untill it asked me to for a restore. Now, after every attempt to restore I receive the message: unknown error (-1).
    theiphonewiki.com lists error (-1) as:
"Error occurs when one uses the "last ditch" method for preventing baseband updates on the iPhone 4. The baseband does not get updated using this method. Use TinyUmbrella to kick it out of recovery mode."
My 3Gs is not jailbroken and I am unsure of thrid party software when it comes to my apple devices. Also error (-1) shows to be an error message for the iPhone 4, which is not the case in my situation.
    I have attempted these procedures:
Removed the sim card, attempted recovery without sim card (x1): No change.
Reinstalled the sim card, attempted recovery (x1): No change.
Rebooted computer, attempted recovery (x5): No change.
Switched USB ports, attempted recovery (x4): No change.
Attempted recovery on multipule computers (x6): No change.
Reinstalled iTunes, rebooted, attempted recovery (x1): No change
Has anyone else experienced this issue? If so, has any procedure that I haven't tried worked for you? Any insight or recommendations would be very helpful.
    Thanks in advance!

Here's what fixed it for me. Pretty simple mistake I overlooked.
I turned off the firewall that was running in the back ground through my virus protection control panel. I then proceeded to make another attempt and it finished as it should have. I did loose all my settings, pictures and videos although, I still have the 2 notes I made in the Notes app. I would have gladly sacrificed the measurements I took for the gutters on my house for the pictures I took of my nephew the day he was born. This is a wake up call to import my photos more offten and/or before another update. Win some, loose some I guess. At least I can make phone calls now. >.<
I hope this will work for anyone else having the same issues.
    Good luck!

  • IPhone 3GS continuously restarting after iOS 6 update

Since I updated it, I've not been able to put it in recovery mode, get iTunes to recognise or turn it out. The apple logo appears for around 3-5s when turned on, but then restarts and repeats until the battery goes flat. Any fix to this or have I just totaled my phone because of this stupid ******* company?

Charge iPhone on Wall Charger for at least 20 minutes, longer will be better, but maybe 20 minutes will work. Then open iTunes on computer. Then connect iPhone to computer with USB Cable. Hold both home and power buttons until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually takes about 20 seconds of holding both buttons. Click the Restore button of iTunes. If this does not work last step would be to perform a DFU Mode Restore.

  • Iphone 3G spontaneously rebooting after successful update to iOS4

Twice now, after a sucessful but very long (5.5hrs) update to iOS4 and restoration of files and settings, I have had my Iphone 3G reboot twice. I think it's running out of memory...but since there's not multitasking why would this be?
Anyone else suffering from this problem?

Fingers crossed indeed. I have done the same procedure as you and issue still occurs. Spontaneous reboot a couple of times per day. iPhone is no longer usable as such. I am now trying the 'auto brightness correction' turned off suggestion.
I did a downgrade to 3.1.3 but I suspect the baseband software which is NOT downgraded!

  • Photo Library on Iphone 3GS looks blurry after software update

Has anyone looked at their photos in their albums and noticed how blurry they are? I'm not talking about the pictures taken from the phone's camera but rather the albums that you may have synced on here from Iphoto. Something is wrong! Everyone photo from 4 different albums is blurry yet when I look at the album "Camera Roll", those are just fine.
    Help!!

Same here. I upgraded to iOS 4 yesterday and the upgrade went smoothly but this morning I noticed that all my iPhoto album photos were like in really small resolution because they were all pixelated when I tried to use them as background. All the pictures from the Camera Roll were fine. Some kind of iPhoto sync issue?!

This HAS to be a software problem because the fine folks at the local apple store (Vancouver) replaced the phone even though it was 35 days out of warranty (they're awesome -- didn't expect that).
No, it doesn't have to be a software issue. If it were, I would expect the millions of other iPhone users, specifically 3GS users running iOS 4 to be experiencing the same problem. They simply are not experiencing the same issue.
    Valis Rhode wrote:
    4) Just for giggles, I've tried turning 3G off. If I do, I lose ALL service (cellular included)
That would tend to indicate a hardware or network issue, most likely hardware. Have you ruled out the SIM card by replacing it?
    Valis Rhode wrote:
As I say, this behavior is identical across both my old phone and its replacement. In fact, for both issues (batttery & call-failed), it's as though the replacement was never made.
Did you restore from your backup? or set up as a new device?
    Valis Rhode wrote:
BTW, when I got the new phone, it was loaded with a slightly older version of iOS. At the Apple Store expert's suggestion, I upgrade to iOS 4.3.1 BEFORE i loaded my backup.
Did you try using the device for a day or say as "new" before restoring your backup? It's very likely that the issue is simply a corrupted setting in your backup.

I was having the same problem, I backed up my phone and then updated to iOS 5 and then it kept telling me it could not restore from my backup as it had failed.  After reading a bunch of forums and posts and trying everything, I did manage to get it to work.  I had tried the Time zone, creating a new computer user account, disabling anti-virus, etc.
It took a combination of things, one of which was disabling the anti-virus completely and copying the contents of the backup folder to my desktop and then deleting everything in the backup folder.  Then I rebooted the PC, entirely disabled the anti-virus, copied the one backup I wanted to restore from the desktop to the backup folder and then trying to restore.  Low and behold the phone said restoring from backup and I am back in business, so when in doubt, trying combining some of the fixes together.
