IPhone 3GS is no longer recognized in iTunes as "mine"

The title summarizes it pretty well. When plugged in, iTunes recognizes that an iPhone is present; however, it informs me that my computer has been previously synced with another iOS device (which it has not) and allows me to either set it up as a new iPhone or restore it from a previous backup. I have done the latter twice, but to no avail. I have also reinstalled iTunes and restarted my Macbook and iPhone numerous times, but this does not help either. I should probably mention, however, that I can still access my iPhone's pictures through iPhoto with no problem.
I suppose I should note something odd I came across though. I had read that Macs running Snow Leopard ecounter problems akin to these and I followed this (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3540) troubleshooter to try and fix it. Strangely, I found that I had no "com.apple.usbmuxd.plist~orig" to delete.
Can anyone help me with this problem?

I finally bit the bullet this morning and set up my iPad as a new one after backing up. It didn't wipe out my stuff like I thought it would, but I did have to re-set all of my synch settings including apps which took a while to set up. My apps were still on the iPad with the 'sync apps' tab unchecked so I checked it and matched up all of my apps on the iPad screen using iTunes before I hit apply. Once that was done, there were a few apps that moved over to the second window, but was easily fixed. Everything's back to normal - assuming all of the videos and music you had on the iPad are in your iTunes so you don't loose anything. It kept my music, but deleted my videos. Other data was still in-tact. I never had to re-enter any passwords for Facebook or Netflix, but my email was all gone (not missing it since it's all online anyway). Hope that helps.

I upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 8 with iTunes installed. Now my iPhone 4S is no longer recognized in iTunes. Connecting the iPhone with USB sends me directly to the MS app that downloads pictures from the iPhone. Suggest this is a question of missing Apple driver for Windows 8, iTunes and iPhone. MS does not care! This seems to be a general problem with Windows 8 that a number of drivers that used to work with Windows 7 now do not work, ie. iPhone to iTunes, HTC to HTCSync, Samsung to Kies etc. I need this connection to work in order to syncronize with Outlook and my iTunes library.

Maybe it would have been a better idea to confirm that iTunes is supported in Windows 8 before buying a computer with that Operating System.
There will be a new version of iTunes released this month... no one forced you to upgrade prior to a supported version of iTunes being released.

  • IPhone 3gs will no longer sync to iTunes on Windows 7 x64

My iPhone 3gs worked fine up until the last 2 updates. Ever since then, the iphone is not even recognized by iTunes. When I go under "devices" in the advanced settings I can see the backup for my phone. Why can't it recognize a phone that it's already recognized? I installed the latest 10.4 and still it's not recognized. I know the computer sees it as it's listed as "started" and "automatic" under services in the admin tools. I've pretty much tried every work around I can think of or seen online and nothing has worked at all. Really have no idea what to do next.
If anyone has any idea how to resolve this issue, I would greatly appreciate it! My setup is below:
    Windows 7 pro x64
    iTunes 10.4
    iphone 3gs
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Ok! So I just came across this randomly in another thread from user Kempas (thanks a lot!). It totally fixed the problem so I thought I'd repost it!

Ok, I'm assuming everyone who is having trouble with Windows 7 (64-bit? mine is) has tried the following solution I found over at en.kioskea.net posted by a guy called Steve78545 (hey, you got to give a dude his due).
It's maybe because Windows 7 uses a MTP driver instead of the USBAAPL by default, and what you need is an 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver' which you might not have in 'Universal Serial Bus Controllers' (check it and see). If you haven't got it, as good ol' Steve78545 suggested:
Update the driver by expanding 'Portable Devices' from the list, right click Apple iPhone/iPhone and select 'Update Driver Software'. Then select 'Browse My computer...'
Copy the following path and paste it in - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers - then hit 'Next'.
Let the thing do it's...thing an it should work. At least it did for me, so I hope it helps a few people out!

  • My Iphone 3gS is not being recognized in Itunes on my laptop. It is charging so the USB port is working properly. My wifes Iphone IS being recognized by the same laptop. My Iphone IS being recognized by the desktop computer and another laptop

My Iphone is not being recognized in Itunes on my laptop. It is charging, so the USB port is working. My Iphone does work on another Laptop in the house and My wifes Iphone is being recognized on the same laptop that mine is not. Any suggestions?

The key bit of information here is that one iPhone works on the computer in question and another does not. So it is unlikely that AMDS is not running or there is a driver problem; if either of these was the problem neither phone would be recognized in iTunes.
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer either. Except to verify that both iPhones (the one that works and the one that doesn't) use the same cable and the same USB port.
Also, are the two iPhones the same model and same iOS version?

  • My iphone 3gs is not being recognized on itunes

hi i got a iphone 3gs and it fell on the floor and it turned off and now it wont turn on at all and when i try to connect it itune it doesnt come up. I have the latest version of itunes and i haave a 2.0 usb port but i dont know why it still is not working.

Likely because dropping the iPhone caused some hardware damage especially if the iPhone powered off when dropped. That is not a good sign.

  • Iphone 5S no longer recognized in ITunes and so cannot sync

Iphone 5S is no longer recognized in ITunes so it cannot sync.  I am not seeing the driver listed and therefore the recommendation to repair the driver does not work for me.  Have rebooted, deleted Itunes and reuploaded many many times.  I have read and tried all the "Apple" fixes listed.  I use Kasperasky Anti-Virus and wondered if that could be blocking the driver needed.  I have added the Apple programs to Kaspersky's exclusion list but that did not work.  Seems ridiculous to spend any more money to download songs in ITunes if I can never sync my Iphone 5S to get them on my phone.  Apple techs, please help - just recommending the standard fixes I keep reading has not helped at all.  Anyone else have a different suggestion?  Thanking you in advance as I've spent so many hours on trying to find a fix.

Thank you for your suggestions but I still have the problem.  The Iphone 5S is not recognized and I have deleted Kaspersky off my computer (and still have not put it back on yet).  I still do not see the Apple Mobile Service USB Driver listed.  I had done this process previously (several times) but went through it all again in your order just in case I missed something.  I am wondering if there is a way to go back to the previous version of ITunes in case it was the ITunes update causing me the problems.  I do not think I can blame it on Kaspersky since it is not on my computer now and I have the same problem.
I also notice that the Iphone is not listed in my devices in Windows 7 - not sure if it was before or is suppose to be for sure - but just noting it is not. I tried the option to add devices but Windows does not find the Iphone 5S.  Just thought I would add that information in case that should lead to a solution.  Again thanks for your time - would appreciate any other suggestions.  I don't think you can use Apple Support without paying money so would like to find help from someone else having the problems.  I think it is odd so many people are having problems with their phone being recognized or sometimes just it syncing - and various steps have helped others (like uninstalling and re-installing).  Thanks for any help.

  • IPhone no longer recognized by ITunes, and Service is not starting

    Hi
My IPhone is no longer recognized by ITunes. I already tried the steps on http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495, but had no luck, and I also tried to remove all relevant Apple software and reinstall, but this did not result in anything either.
Now, also, if I start up ITunes, it tells me, that the "Apple Mobile Device Service" is not running. Trying to start this service by hand, did not work. Following the rules on http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 did not work.
I am running Windows 7 Professional 64bit, my ITunes version is 9.0.3.
This is my third PC in this household this has happened (i switched the PCs after it appeared on my other PCs), and I am simply not willing to do that again.
Please, if anyone has an answer, it would be greatly appreciated.
    cheers, Roland

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2553 as a last ditch effort but if it has been recognized by computer before and you did everything in HT1923 and TS1495 then i would say like msconfig stuff or disk cleanup and such.. it would be worth it to contact apple tech support if HT1923, TS1495 and HT2553 doesn't work.

  • IPhone 3GS w/ iOS4 Not Recognized by Windows or newest iTunes

I have two friends who have iPhones that will not sync with their computers. Both run Windows XP and iOS4 on iPhone 3GS. One is recognized but cannot sync any calendar items from Outlook 2007. The other one is completely unrecognized by either Windows or iTunes. Any help will be appreciated.

  • TS1363 Our two iphones are no longer recognized on iTunes

Our two iphones are suddenly not being recognized on iTunes.   In fact, when we go to "file", then "devices" and try to click on something under devices, it won't let us, i.e. nothing happens.    Tried deleting iTunes and uploading again.   Still didn't work.   BEFORE we tried deleting itunes and downloading it again, I tried to go on itunes to sync my new upgraded iPhone 5c.   No luck.   Back before I upgraded from my 4s to the 5C (in January 2014) I had noticed that all my regular phone contacts had disappeared to be replaced by some of my facebook friends.      It continued to still be that way up until yesterday, when I tried to sync my new phone to itunes.   I ended up spending a VERY long time on live CHAT with Apple support.     She suggested (after helping me for a LONG time) that I delete itunes from my desktop and download it again.    She led me thru the steps to delete and download again.   We knew that in the course of this help, we would lose our chat.    After re-downloading itunes, I still couldn't find my iphone on itunes.  Last night I requested a call from apple support.   They called promptly and to make a long story short, he had me go thru the process of deleting my phone and then reloading my phone to the most recent sync, which was in January fo 2014, thinking that all my original phone contacts would be there, and everything would be fine.    At the time, itunes appeared to be working (with this young man's help).   I had one more backup listed on my itunes account from July 2013, so he said to try syncing my phone to THAT backup date.   It didn't bring up an error code, but said it had "failed."
So off and on all day today, I have been plugging my phone in and trying to find it on iTunes.   Nothing, nothing, nothing.   Very frustrating.   I am wondering if going in person to an Apple store would help me more, and if THEY would be able to get my old contacts back.   BUT that still doesn't help with not being able to find our phones on itunes.
    Any ideas?

I just bought the new iPhone 4, having previously used the iPhone 3G. The old 3G no longer has phone capabilities (of course), however, I was wondering if I could continue to sync it on iTunes to keep the applications and podcasts up to date? Will iTunes preclue me from syncing two iPhones? Will iTunes not reconginze my new iPhone 4 if I sync the old 3G? I want to make sure that I don't mess up the new iPhone 4 before trying this.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Shouldn't be a problem. I'm syncing two iPhone 4 units, an iPad, and an old iPhone 3G used as an iPod. All can be synced at the same time. You might need/want to rename the 3G if you kept the same name for your iPhone 4.

  • TS1538 My iphone 5 which I used for my laptop is no longer recognized in iTunes?

My iphone 5 which I used on my laptop is no longer recognized in iTunes window, why?

Hi ...thanks for trying to help.
When I plug my ipod in via USB it attempts to find and install the driver software.  It always fails and I get the message "Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.  Windows found driver softtware for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it - Apple mobile device USB driver.  The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request"

My iPhone device no longer recognized in iTunes.  What can I do?

I just did a reset and that fixed it. You know how to do a reset? Hold the home and off buttons down at the same time unitl it goes off and then comes back on again. Then let them go. Try it. It worked for me.

  • Iphone no longer recognized in itunes

My iPhone is no longer recognized in iTunes.  I can see it as a device in Windows, but it no longer appears in iTunes.

Well, after going thru the Apple fix of uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes (and all related products), it now recognizes the iPhone.  Why is it I have to spend 2.5 hours going thru this process instead of Apple releasing only tested and proven products?  The same thing happened with my first iPhone when I brought it home and installed it, it blew up Windows.  I had to do a system restore. Look if you guys don't want to seriously support Windows, fine just say so.  I'll move on to a Windows phone and be perfectly happy.
My first computer was an Apple 2+, but I got driven off by high pricing and limited software.  Apple people like to make fun of Microsoft, but I haven't had these kind of problems with Windows since about Release 2.something.
I'm done screwing around with you guys.  Call me if you ever start to act professionally and get it right.
