IPhone 3GS making random text message alerts but no message received

Since yesterday morning my iPhone 3GS (running iOS 4.2) has started randomly making the text message alert noise but no new message has been received. I've also go no other new push notifications which could have been using the same sound either. At the moment it's about 2-3 of these bizare alerts a day with no set pattern of when and where.
Any ideas what could be the problem and how to fix it?
Thanks

This sounds very much like a physical fault inside the phone - short or loose component. You really have no option but to get it looked at under warranty

Try popping out the SIM card and turn off the phone.
Pop in the SIM card once again and turn on the phone, make sure that the SIM card is placed and seated perfectly in the tray!
Tell me how did you unlock your phone!?

  • My iphone 5S will send texts as imessage but frequently switches to regular (green) messages even for people that I know use imessage - since we have exchanged (blue) messages previously. Is there something I can do to fix this or is it a unit problem?

    Please help.

You can try to log out of iMessage and then sign back in.  However, even under optimal conditions, iMessage will not always work.  That's why the option of 'Send as SMS' is so important.  There might be temporary outages in the related iMessage servers.

Downgrading the iOS is not supported, and likely has caused the problems you are experiencing.
You'll need to go elsewhere for support.

    Hi, beth.lau.gr.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I understand you have been experiencing issues with your iPhone restarting and showing you a blue screen.  I wont be able to give you an exact answer as to why this is happening.  However, this is the most relevant troubleshooting article for this issue.  This article also provides options to reach out to us via phone for additional assistance.

Connect to iTunes & hit the restore button on the Summary Pane. This will restore as a new device. Eject when finished.

My iphone 3gs wont send or recieve calls but sms is working.Signal is good & plenty of credit

First step is to clean the iPhone charging port with a clean dry toothbrush, also use a bit of Isopropyll Alcohol, and clean especially the pins which are on top of the dock midrib.
Let it dry for a minute. Then open iTunes on computer, then connect iPhone to computer, then hold both Home and Power buttons until the iPhone is recognized by iTunes in Recovery Mode. Usually about 20 seconds time of holding both buttons. Restore the iPhone Firmware.

  • After I update my Iphone to ios5 I have a contact that was messaging me but his messages are not grouped

After I update my Iphone to ios5 I have a contact that was messaging me but his messages are not grouped

Person1 has totally same number but after I restore from backup they are not group together

You need to get the owner's manual for your Ford's bluetooth system to see how to put your system into discovery mode for the iPhone as well as the appropriate steps to take.
In addition, you should see if the iPhone is supported.

  • I see iPhone 3GS is for sale for 45$ but from AT

i see iPhone 3GS is for sale for 45$ but from AT&T carrier but i dont want a carrier can i get it for 45$ with no carrier

Because no one sells them for this price with no contract.
AT&T REQUIRES a two year contract in order to buy at this price.

  • My daughter's iPhone 3GS is still showing my contacts in the messages

When my daughter goes to use my old iPhone 3GS to send a text message, my contacts show up. I have synced and re=synced the phone to her iTunes account and wiped the phone twice. Any ideas?

Here's what I'd do, go back to the Apple store, take the phone & computer. Ask the geniuses how to fix this since they replaced the phone. You never know, they may just update the computer for free...its happened before...can't gurantee it will happen for you, but worth a try.
Otherwise, you're looking at purchasing a retail copy of Leopard, however if her computer can handle Snow Leopard you can purchase the $29 upgrade disk & install a full copy of SL.

  • IPhone 4 makes random text sound

My iPhone 4 makes the text alert sound (or just vibrates if I have it on vibrate) for no reason about once or more a day. I have all push alerts turned off and, just in case, I check each time to see if my email or other apps using push alerts have something new when it makes the sound.
I recently got a refurbished phone after having cracked the one in question and this refurbished one does the same thing. So two different phones that have been through multiple software updates and have push alerts turned off still randomly make text message/email alert sounds.
    Anyone know what's up?

Hi DillonH, my ipad2 does the same you are describing with iOS 5.0.1, is a random behavior that appears quite frequently as you say.
i do not know what to do i try many things as reboot the ipad and uninstall applications.

  • Iphone 3Gs won't update i get an error message that says i am not connected to the internet. i HAVE TRIED ALL THE RECOMENDED TROUBLESHOOTING. ITUNES UPDATE WAS SUCCESSFUL AND I AM NOT HAVING ANY TROUBLE WITH THE ITUNES STORE. SO IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE

When I go to sync my iphone 3gs itunes alerts me that an update is available. I check to download an update. I then receive an error message stating that I am not connected to the internet. I am 100% positive that I am connected and before this download I was instructed to update itunes which I did without any problems and restarted my computer. I have tried all of the troubleshooting suggestions. I have no problem syncing or using the itunes store. I just can't get the update. I also have no problems with my iphone connecting to a wireless internet connection. Please Help!!!!!!

  • IPhone 3gs restores to iOS 4.0 but won't restore to iOS 5 'Unknown Error 1'

I have an iPhone 3gs 32gb that accidentally went through the washing machine a couple of years ago. It was dead and rested peacefully in its box under the bed until a few months ago when I found it and thought - let's try turning it on. Low and behold the little begger worked. It was pretty beat up, so I ordered a new rear case for it and a few fiddly screws later it looked as good as new. It was making and recieving calls ok and recieving email fine - I thought great, I'll plug it into iTunes (10.6.3 on my Windows Vista laptop) and update it. This is when the problems started.
As soon as it tried to install iOS5 it got to the point where it says 'restoring iPhone firmware' and then boom, I get the error message 'Cannot be restored unknown error 1'. I tried installing in DFU mode... same thing happens. So I brought it to work and managed to install iOS4.0 via my work iMac PPC G5 running iTunes 9.2.1 - again, everything worked fine. Calls in and out, internet (both 3g and WiFi) gps, etc., all worked like a dream. So I moved to another iMac that was running the latest iTunes and all the latest updates for Mac OSX. Tried to install iOS5... same issue. 'Cannot be restored unknown error 1'. Arrggghhh!
There doesn't seem to be any hardware issues because the phone works great on iOS4, I just can't figure out what I'm doing wrong when I try to update it. I've also tried downloading the IPSW file and doing CTRL/Option restore and pointing to the file, still with no joy.
Can anyone shed any light on the situation?

Are you sure your replacement is an iPhone 3GS and not a 3?  The iPhone 3 can't be updated beyone iOS 4.2.1.  If your 3GS was using a newer iOS you won't be able to restore from the backup (the 3GS could be updated to the newes iOS, 5.1).  You can check your model number (on the back of the phone) against this list to tell: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3939.
