IPhone 3Gs map erratic, sluggish, confused

I recently upgraded to a new iPhone 3Gs phone. My previous 3G phone was bullet proof and the map function worked great. The new phone's map function is sluggish and when it finds me, it routinely things I am about a quarter to a half a mile away from the correct location. I returned a phone to the apple store for this very problem and the replacement does the same thing. Does anyone know how to reset the software completely. My GPS navagon software is useless now. The compass function does work.

Have you tried to restore the iPhone?
You can restore the iPhone and set it up as a new device. That would erase everything on the iPhone and put it back to the state it was when you got it out of the box.

  • IPhone 3GS battery issue + sluggish

I've had this phone for probably around 18 months now, and it's in a state of permanent frustration for me.
Apart from it being as sluggish as anything - which I'm sorry I don't care what new technology these Apple guys want to orgasmically claim to be amazing, it doesn't work as intended.
But the worse thing is I could be at anything between 40% and 70% battery charge left and it will just turn itself off.  When I try and turn it on again it says there is no battery left and I need to charge.
Then after about 2 minutes on charge it shows the battery charge where it was at before it switched itself off.
Anybody hear of anything like this?

Standard troubleshooting steps in order are:
Power your iPhone off and on.
An iPhone reset, whichis done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup.
Restore your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
If no change after the last step, your iPhone has a hardware problem.
If one of these steps resolves the problem with your iPhone powering off when the battery level is between 40 and 70%, the next thing to do is re-calibrate the battery level indicator. This is done by fully charging the battery followed by using your iPhone until the battery is depleted with your iPhone powering off when the battery is depleted. Connect your iPhone to a power source and leve it connected to the power source until the battery is fully charged.

  • IPhone 3gs map problem

Whenever I'm in my house, and I try to use the gps on my iPhone, it's always 7 miles off. But it's only in my house. Anywhere else it works, just not on my property. Any help would he greatly appreciated. Thanks
PS I get full AT&T 3g at my house so I know it's not the network. This also happens with my dads iPhone 3g

The iPhone can not see the GPS satellites when it's in your home. Therefore, it reverts to triangulation to determine it's location. Apparently, the closest tower it can get, is about 7 miles from your home... The same thing happens at my home, and when I'm in most buildings.
    Hope this helps.

You need iTunes 10.0 or greater to update your phone...iTunes isn't confused at all. If you're on a Mac, you'll need OS X 10.5.8 or greater to update iTunes to 10.0 or greater.

  • IPhone 3GS - "LOCATION PINNING" PROBLEM ON THE MAP

Hi everyone. I'm currently using an iPhone 3GS running on IOS4 and unfortunately facing "location pinning problem" on the map. Even though, "location services" feature is on and also "active" for photos, I quite often need to reboot my device right after I took a picture(s) in order to see the "location pin(s)" on the map.
But sometimes I don't need to do so, because it somehow captures the place the picture's taken and puts a pin on the map right away.
Do you have any ideas about where that problem might be stemming from? Appreciate your help on this issue. Thx a lot in advance...

so did you happen to resolve that "pinpointing" issue?

  • I was trying to sync my iPhone 3GS and it is now stuck, saying I'm in recovery mode.  I am thoroughly confused now after researching online.  I'm scared to restore to original settings as I don't want to lose everything, apps, contacts, etc. Help!

I was trying to sync my iPhone 3GS and it is now stuck, saying I'm in recovery mode.  I am thoroughly confused now after researching online.  I'm scared to restore to original settings as I don't want to lose everything, apps, contacts, etc. Help!  Is there a way to get it all back if I do restore?? Can I my stuff back through iCloud??

Bad news first and we hope for good news as well
The device is in Recovery Mode and the data has already been deleted, you need to restore the device with iTunes in order to get the iPhone back into a working state
When the iPhone is restored you can then restore it from your latest backup using iTunes or iCloud and regain some, if not all, of your data.
The good news part only happens if you had a backup.

  • I recently updated my iPhone 3GS now my maps application always gives me the wrong current location. It worked fine before it was updated during my last sync. How do I fix this?

I have an iPhone 3GS 16gb not jailbroken, that I just synced and updated to the latest fix.  Before my google maps was working perfectly but since I updated it always gives me a current location that is about a half mile off in any direction.  I have tried several hard resets to no avail. turning off my wifi, nothing. Turning off my location services-reset-then turn them back on, again nothing.  Tried resetting network settings with the auto lock on never.  Rebooted.. Nothing again..
Help!!! What's the score here?  What comes next?

yes, you can update to the latest iOS, that would be the first thing AppleCare would have you do
doing a restore and then putting your information right back on the device is not a troubleshooting step. If anything, you wipe out the issue and then have put it right back on your phone. It would be better to restore as new

  • Iphoto isn't importing video's from my iphone 3GS

I've taken pictures and recorded videos on my iphone. When I connect it to my imac G5 running Leopard, iphoto opens up as expected and I'm able to import the contents of my phone. However, only the pictures get imported, not the videos. I'm thinking maybe I have an older version of iphoto (version 4.0.3) that doesn't recognise videos, or I read somewhere that it might be something to do with the fact I'd previously been using an ipod touch and my computer is confusing the two and not looking for videos.
    Over to you.

I found a way to get video's in my Camera Roll on the iPhone 3GS. my phone is NOT jailbreaked !
First i installed the app on my mac called, Disk Aid
(make sure you have latest version so it works with OS 3.0.1 or later)
this app makes it possible to enter your iPhone trough USB.
(you can browse only Media Folder or Disk Aid Folder)
when it does, go to Media Folder>DCIM , the place all your Camera photo's and video's are stored.
now you only have to drag your photo's or video's to that place. Make sure you have them named the same as the other photo's in that map. example: IMG_0009.JPG for video: IMG_0034.MOV
for a video make sure you have them converted right!
(QuickTime Pro or other 3rd party software)
    codecs: H.264, AAC
    colorprofile: SD (6-1-6)
    That's all, have fun!

  • How to transfer purchased video from iPhone 3GS to computer?

    Hi all,
So I just bought an iPhone 3GS, my first iPhone, and I've also done my first purchase of TV shows off of the iTunes store. (Series 2 of Torchwood as well as the recently aired Children of Earth.) I did the initial purchase on the iTunes store from the phone itself, not realizing that I couldn't actually download the episodes onto the device since that'd take ages over the 3G network. But I did see that I could download the HD episodes to my computer and the SD ones onto the device.
Fine, I think, I'll take my iPhone home and pull the episodes already download off of it onto the computer...
... only I can't find any way to do that. I have seen that I can download episodes directly to the computer and sync those down to the iPhone, but this has caused duplication of episodes; for example, I wound up with two copies of episode #3 of series 2 because the one coming in off the computer didn't actually override the one on the phone.
To further confuse matters, episodes 1 and 2 have vanished off the phone and I can't figure out if this is because I've watched those on the computer...?
Anybody got any ideas? I'd like to be able to free up space on the phone by pulling the five episodes on it onto my computer, so I won't have to download those twice. Thanks in advance!
    Anna

Nope, Transfer Purchases didn't work for me at all.
I wound up emailing Apple Support directly for help and they couldn't give me an answer as to why that wasn't working either. But we did eventually reach a workaround of them unlocking some of the duplicate downloads for me so that I could do them again on my computer, while also deleting the files directly off the iPhone in manual mode. Not an ideal solution, but it did at least give me a way to get all the episodes onto my actual computer.
Thanks to y'all who've already answered.
    Anna

  • Multiple issues with my iPhone 3GS since 4.1; can anyone help?

    Hi,
I have an iPhone 3GS 16GB which I love very much. Vital Statistics are:
    Version: 4.1 (8B117)
    Carrier: Voda AU 8.0
    Model: MC132X
    Modem Firmware: 05.14.02
I bought it through Vodafone Australia in January this year. It’s been brilliant, it is this device which convinced me Apple sold brilliant gear, and greatly influenced me to buy my iMac 27", 17" Macbook Pro, Airport Extreme, and Time Capsule.
I am a Senior Test Analyst with telco experience in all of Australia’s mobile phone operators (3, Vodafone, Optus, and Telstra). I now work for a global media company, and depend on my iPhone for phonecalls, emails, internet, getting access to my share trading platform, banking apps, calendar, etc.
I went to Germany for 2 months, and I bought the unlock from my carrier, Vodafone Australia, so I could use a usim from Vodafone DE in Germany. Vodafone’s instructions were that in order to apply the unlock, I had to connect my iPhone to iTunes, where it would download an update from Apple and unlock my phone.
I performed the upgrade to 4.1, which was a completely clean install after backing everything up.
Unfortunately, after upgrading from 3.1.3 to 4.1 I am having no end of issues with my trusty (once) 3GS.
    Issues I am currently encountering:
    1. Dropped calls. Both in Germany, and in Australia, my iPhone is dropping calls at a rate it has never, ever done before. 1 out of ever 2-3 calls is being dropped. The voice quality is also degraded over what I remember it being (both in AU and DE), and I’m getting ‘squawks’ and ‘screeches’ in the middle of my conversations which I never had prior to upgrading.
    2. Signal strength is very poor. Before I upgraded to 4.1, I was able to make and receive phonecalls at my desk at work (right in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, right next to Hyde Park.) without issue. I was able to walk in between my company’s offices in the CBD and talk the whole way without problem. Now, I get 1 bar at my desk, and I’m lucky if I can make a phonecall 50% of the time there. I can no longer receive the volume of calls that I used to at my desk either. Walking between offices sees my phone calls drop EVERY TIME now. At home, with 3.1.3, I had no problem with reception. Now, I drop calls inside my house on a regular basis, and I often don’t have enough signal to make calls at home where prior I had no issues. My younger brother, who bought an iPhone 3GS on the same day I did, from the same Vodafone store, at the same time, is still on 3.1.2. He has no problems with reception in the house at all. He walks around taunting me holding phonecalls without issue.
    3. Internet performance has been devastated. Whereas my google maps, email, and internet access used to be fast and crisp, now it is slow and haphazard. I am also seeing the 3G symbol disappear and be replaced by an E symbol, and my phone seems to have difficulty staying on the 3G network. My brother, standing right next to me, does not have these problems. Once again, my brother’s iPhone 3GS on 3.1.2 does not have any internet problems when he is using his iPhone right beside me. We are on the same carrier (Vodafone AU), on the same plan.
    4. My iPhone battery life has been dramatically reduced. Whereas I used to be able to use it for almost a full day, with minor top ups when it got really busy, now my battery life vanishes before my eyes in half the time. This is with the device simply not being up to the task of performing the workload it used to!
    5. My iphone locks up, and crashes at random times, and I’ve been having to hard-reset it on occasion.
    6. My iPhone is far slower than it used to be. I’ve compared it to my brother’s identical 3GS on 3.1.2, and his phone flies in comparison to mine! Opening my SMS’s, email client, and internet browser is painfully slow.
    7. When calling a number, often my iPhone ‘waits’ for 20-30 seconds at the ‘calling mobile’ screen before I hear any tone from the phone indicating that it’s making the phone call. This never happened when it was running 3.1.3. This never happens on my brother’s identical 3GS.
    8. My wireless performance has decreased. I have run bandwidth tests through my wireless router numerous times from www.speedtest.net, and compared them with my brother’s results performed right before and right after mine. I’ve run this test against my brother’s 3GS more than enough times to form a statistical picture. On the whole, my wireless performance is around 10-15% worse than his 3GS.
I work in the telco industry. I regularly chat with the radio engineers who fix up blackspots in 3G coverage for Telstra and 3 Australia. I know that the excuse offered, that of the iPhone software correctly reporting the signal now and not before is absolute rubbish. My 3GS used to work at my desk, between my offices, and at home flawlessly. It crawls along now, and it does not get the reception signal quality it used to.
I have wiped my iPhone several times now. I have put it into DFU mode and totally, cleanly installed the 4.1 software. I have done this 4 times now.
The clean installs have not fixed the issues above.
I would like to know what my options are for fixing these issues?
The prime questions I have are:
    1. How can I roll back this accursed update?
    2. Why would Apple release a software update(s) that hasn't been tested, and dramatically negatively impacts my beloved 3GS?
    3. How can I get my brilliant 3GS +*back to the way it was*+!?!?
I’m very, very disappointed. And to be honest, the simple fact I’m taking the time out of my busy day to write this post means I’m very angry as well.
I know the problem with my 3GS *is not a hardware issue*. It's a software issue, and I'd like to know how I can get my old, fast, reliable, brilliant 3GS back.
    Regards,
    -J

The picture you show is normal. If you lightly double tap home button it activates reach ability mode for one handed operation. Nothing is wrong there. Another light double tap returns it to full screen. Do not press, just light touch the home button. AAs far as the other issues check the in call volume or ringer volume as it happens, just a possibility. as far as the banner not displayed on lock screen, as far as I know you need to have notifications set to alerts not banners in order for them to show up on the lock screen.

  • My iPhone 3GS & iPad 4 wont connect to my Macbook

Hello, my name is Dave. I have two problems with Apple products.
I've been trying to upload music to my iPhone 3GS and iPad from my Macbook.
         - iPhone 3GS problem
I have a 32GB iPhone 3GS with 6.1.6. I want to upload music to my phone, but I cant. I can connect my iPhone to my Macbook, and it wont even charge it, closed or not. I haven't tried putting my iPhone into recovery mode yet, only because it wont even charge from my Macbook. I followed Glenn Carter's instructions from this link. Iphone wont connect to macbook
"Well, I may have discovered a fix, or at least a work around for this.
Quit iTunes if open, and go to Home Folder/Library/Preferences.
    Scroll down to
    com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
Move it to the Trash (but don't Empty it yet).
Log out of your account (or reboot), and then log back in. Now, without launching iTunes, connect your iPhone and see if iTunes launches on its' own.
Let us know your results. Cheers!" -Glenn Carter
         -iPad 4 problem
My second problem is with my 32GB iPad 4 with 8.1. I am having a similar problem to what is going on with my iPhone. My iPad will connect to my Macbook and iTunes, but will ask me to enter my passcode to gain access. The problem is, I will enter my passcode, it will read for a second, then come back with the same thing. It shows up with this message.
"iTunes could not connect to the iPad “David J. Botelho's iPad” because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes."
It will ask me to try again, and I keep trying. It still comes up with the same message EVERY time I try to enter my passcode to gain access.
         I have a Macbook 5, 2 with Mac OS X 10.6.8(10K549) and I have iTunes 11.0.4.
This is very annoying. I would appreciate it if someone could solve either one of my problems, or both. Thank you for your time.
         -Dave

Then, after a few times of disconnecting and reconnecting my iPad to my Macbook, this shows up....
Not even an iPhone !!! VERY confused.

  • Iphone 3GS no longer recognized

I have an iPhone 3GS running version 3.1.3. I have been synching (successfully) to my iMac running 10.4.11. Last synched on Nov 22, 2010. My current version of iTunes is 9.0.2. Now when I hook up the phone to my computer I get..nothing. No messages that I need a different version of iTunes, no indication that the computer recognizes the phone, no error messages, no battery charging indicator, nothing. I have not changed any of my operating systems and, since I am not running 10.5, I have not updated iTunes. The phone is working fine and charges when I use the USB adapter in a standard electrical outlet. And yes, the USB ports on the computer all work and I have tried all of them.
Based on the other postings and answers that I've read on this forum, I don't think I have an incompatible OS issue. Is this an issue with the phone or does iTunes somehow know I am running old operating systems and is forcing me to update (pay) anyway?
Will resetting the phone (i.e. holding the start button and home button simultaneously) wipe everything off of the phone or will it just reset the OS and clear any misconceptions the phone may have about synching to my computer?
I am confused and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Checked for dirt - none. Don't have another USB cable so I guess I will go buy one and try that. Apple Mobile Device Service still installed? How would I know? I have gone through the troubleshooting material several times. However, the material is geared toward iPhone 4 and the basic requirement for any solution is to have the latest version of iTunes and OS 10.5.
According to the troubleshooting stuff, the first step in removing and reinstalling the mobile device service is to trash the iTunes application. Then type in some magical commands and then...wait for it...DOWNLOAD THE LATEST VERSION OF ITUNES!
So, question #1 is (or really just a point of clarification): Trashing the iTunes application does not affect the actual iTunes content which is sitting in a separate folder elsewhere on the computer (i.e. the iTunes Library Folder). True?
Question #2 - Based on some of the other responses to similar issues in this forum, it appears that in order to download and run the latest version of iTunes (iTunes 10) I also need to be running OS 10.5. Is this correct or did I miss something someplace?
I haven't worked up the courage to try resetting the iPhone yet.
Thanks for your time and input.
